Virat Kohli's form with the willow will be crucial for the Indian team if they are to fancy their chances in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. Kohli has a terrific record in the shortest format when it comes to playing in Australia and has mastered the conditions down under, over the years.

The senior India batter has 451 runs to his name in 11 T20Is in Australia at a brilliant average of 64.42, including five fifties. Kohli has the most runs by a visiting batter in Australia in T20Is and will be aiming to add to his tally in the T20 World Cup this year.

Ahead of the start of India's campaign in the T20 World Cup 2022, former India opener Gautam Gambhir aimed a jibe at Kohli and advised the senior India batter to focus on winning matches for his team rather than his individual records. Gambhir's comments came on Star Sports after Kohli's impressive numbers in Australia were highlighted during a show.

The presenter asked Gambhir with what mindset should Kohli approach the T20 World Cup after lauding him for his numbers in Australia. Gambhir came up with a straightforward response and said any batter should focus on scoring runs for the team.

The former India cricketer, who was part of India's 2007 T20 World Cup-winning team, said individual records are of no value in big tournaments like the World Cup and Kohli should look at playing impactful knocks rather than focusing on notching up fifties and centuries.

“Go with the mindset of scoring runs, what else can there be? The role of a batter is to make runs, the role of the bowler is take wickets. Make runs that help your team. Don't look at scoring 50s and 100s, score 30-40 runs at an impact which can help your team reach 170-180. If you are chasing, bat in a manner where you can relieve the lower middle-order of pressure.," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

"In these tournaments, individual records should be left at home. If you are going to Australia, pack these records in India. Individual records are of no value in these tournaments.

"Winning the World Cup is important. If you make 200 runs and your team wins the world cup that is your legacy. If you make 500 runs and the team does not qualify, those runs only go in your individual record. If the whole team faces criticism, you are part of it as well," added the former India opener.

Individual records have no value in big tournaments: Gautam Gambhir's advice to Virat Kohli ahead of T20 WC

The ICC T20 World Cup 2022 got underway on Sunday (October 16) with Namibia pulling off an upset against Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka in the opening game of the tournament. It was a cracking start to what is expected to be a blockbuster tournament with the top teams from around the globe battling it out for the ultimate trophy.

In a first, the ICC is reportedly set to allow players testing positive for COVID-19 to continue playing matches during the T20 World Cup. As per a report in cricket.com.au, the team doctors will have to take a call if a player should be allowed to take the field after contracting the virus.

The ICC also said there will be no mandatory testing or isolation period during the tournament. As per the report, the teams will be allowed to ring in changes to their squad to replace a player who tests positive for COVID-19. The infected player can return to the squad once he has returned a negative report.

ICC to allow players who test positive for COVID-19 to play matches in T20 World Cup 2022

Early this month, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Jasprit Bumrah has officially been ruled out of the T20 World Cup, in Australia. Bumrah, who had missed the Asia Cup 2022 edition due to back issues, was part of the India-Australia home T20Is, in September, before his back concerns re-emerged.

As a result, the 28-year-old Bumrah was ruled out of the ICC event due to a stress back fracture. The board took a lot of time before finally announcing Mohammed Shami, who last played a T20I during the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE, as his replacement. Deepak Chahar was also a strong contender before back injury ruled him out as well. On the other hand, Mohammed Siraj -- who finished with five wickets in the recently-held three ODIs versus South Africa at home -- was also a strong candidate to replace Bumrah but BCCI selectors went ahead with the experienced Shami.

Recently, Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar lauded Shami and feels he is an ideal replacement for Bumrah. “Bumrah not being there is a big loss and we obviously needed a strike bowler. An out-and-out genuine fast bowler, who could attack batters and get wickets. Shami has proven that and he seems a good replacement,” Tendulkar told PTI in an exclusive interview.

On Monday (October 17), Rohit Sharma-led India locked horns with hosts Australia in a warm-up encounter, in the run-up to their 2022 T20 WC opening fixture, versus Pakistan on October 23. During the clash, India had to defend their competitive score, 186-7, and successfully managed to do that courtesy of Shami, who came onto bowl on the final over with the Aussies needing 11 for a victory.

Shami returned with 1-0-2-3 and displayed his rhythm from the word go. At the post-match presentation, Rohit said on Shami, "He (Shami) is coming back after a long time, so we wanted to give him an over. Wanted to give him a challenge and let him bowl the final over, and you saw what he did."

Shami is expected to play in India's remaining warm-up tie, versus New Zealand in Brisbane on October 19 (Wednesday) before the main draw of the competition begins on October 22.

T20 World Cup 2022: Md Shami is a good replacement for Jasprit Bumrah, believes Sachin Tendulkar

Senior India pacer Mohammed Shami made a brilliant comeback as he bowled a stunning final over to help India beat Australia by six runs in the warm-up match between the two sides at The Gabba on Monday (October 17). Shami went on to pick three wickets in the final over while defending 11 runs to secure a thrilling victory for the Men in Blue.

Batting first, India rode on the fifties from KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav to post 186 runs on the board before the bowlers gave their all to defend the target. Skipper Aaron Finch's 54-ball 76 went in vain as Australia fell short towards the end after Shami's last-over heroics.

With 11 runs to defend in the final over, Shami sent Pat Cummins packing on the third delivery before Ashton Agar was run-out on the next ball. Shami then went on to nail two perfect yorkers to clean up Josh Inglis and Kane Richardson on successive deliveries and seal India's victory.

Shami was nowhere to be seen before the final over of the Australia innings and was not part of India's XI initially However, Rohit brought him to bowl the final over throwing him a huge challenge on his return to competitive cricket after a long gap. The Indian skipper said it was always the plan to bowl Shami in the final over while lauding him for executing the plan well.

"Honestly, he is coming back after a long time. So we just wanted to give him an over. This was always the plan from the beginning," Rohit said on Star Sports.

"He comes and bowls at the death. We know how lethal he can be with the new ball. We just wanted to give him a little bit of a challenge, coming and bowling that death over and we saw what it was," he added.

While Shami impressed on his return despite getting to bowl just one over in the warm-up game, other Indian bowlers were taken to the cleaners as Australia came close to overhauling the target. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/20 in his three overs but barring him, all others conceded runs heavily.

Rohit said there is still room for improvement for the Indian bowlers, who will have to adapt to the Australian conditions and vary their line and length accordingly to ensure they can be more effective when India begin their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign against Pakistan on October 23.

"There is definitely room for improvement. I am sure we are on it but I want to see more consistency in terms of where you want to pitch the ball. You know, when you play back home and when you play in Australian conditions, you have to change your tactics, change your lengths a little bit. Sometimes, keeping it simple and hitting the ball hard on the deck will be a good option.

The likes of Rohit, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Shami, Suryakumar Yadav, etc. will be crucial to India's chances Down Under.

While the 15-man main squad and reserve list have plenty of match-winners for Team India, here's looking at Men in Blue's star-studded XI featuring players who are not part of the showpiece event Down Under:

India's missed-out XI: Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Venketesh Iyer, Deepak Chahar, Ravindra Jadeja, Umran Malik, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah

The above XI shows the depth of India's squad and the abundance of talent in the Indian camp. The experienced trio of Shikhar Dhawan, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah missed out with the latter two being injured whereas Dhawan has been sidelined from T20Is. The younger lot such as Prithvi Shaw, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan are destined to take over from the likes of KL Rahul, Rohit and Kohli but for now, they didn't find a spot.

Chahar missed out again due to back issues after being named in the reserves. Meanwhile, Samson and Kuldeep are part of the second-stringed white-ball Indian team but weren't considered for the T20 WC. Meanwhile, Venkatesh Iyer went down the pecking order as soon as Hardik Pandya was deemed fully fit in early 2022.

Lastly, Umran has featured in only a handful of T20Is, indicating that he still needs to learn a lot and more exposure to be considered for such a marquee event.

From Shikhar Dhawan to Jasprit Bumrah: Star players who are not part of India's T20 World Cup squad

Mohammed Shami delivered a brilliant final over as India defeated Australia by six runs in a warm-up game at The Gabba in Brisbane on Monday (October 17). With 11 runs needed off the final over, Shami went on to pick up three wickets in the 20th over to prove his death-bowling credentials and secure a thrilling victory for the Men in Blue.

Chasing a target of 187 runs, Australia got off to a terrific start as Mitchell Marsh went all guna blazing after opening the batting with captain Aaron Finch. Marsh slammed a quickfire 18-ball 35 to post a 41-run stand with Finch before the Aussie captain took control of the run chase.

Finch notched up a magnificent knock of 76 runs off 54 balls as he single-handedly steered the Australian innings. The experienced right-hander held the fort on one end as wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals on the other end. However, his 76-run-knock went in vain as Australia fell short in the end after losing four wickets on four successive deliveries in the final over.

The likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel bowled well to save 11 runs to defend in the final over before Shami was called up by Rohit to bowl his first over in a competitive game in Australia ahead of the World Cup. Shami, who last played a T20I for India in the T20 World Cup in the UAE last year, was on the money with the ball.

He gave away four runs off the first two balls before sending back Pat Cummins on 7 as Virat Kohi pulled off a stunning catch at long-on. Ashton Agar was run out on the next ball before Shami nailed two near-perfect yorkers to clean up Josh Inglis and Kane Richardson on successive deliveries.

England captain Jos Buttler has picked Australia as the title favourites in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022. Speaking ahead of the start of the tournament, Buttler said the hosts always enjoy an advantage compared to other teams as they are well accustomed to the conditions.

Buttler picked defending champions Australia as favourites despite England having beaten them 2-0 in their own backyard in the recently-concluded three-match series. England defeated the Aussies by 8 runs in the first game before pulling off another victory by the same margin in the next game.

The third T20I was a no-result after the game was called off due to rain. While there were close contests, England showcased why they themselves will remain one of the firm favourites to win the elusive trophy this year. However, Buttler insisted home advantage will be crucial for Australia.

"I think history tells you that generally, the host nations are slight favourites in big tournaments," the England captain said in a presser ahead of the start of the tournament.

"Lots of people have played in Australia in those conditions but of course no one is going to know the conditions or be as accustomed to them as the Australian team and the reigning champions as well," he added.

England enjoyed a great campaign in the T20 World Cup last year under former skipper Eoin Morgan. They were unbeaten in the group stages and went on to defeat South Africa in the Super 12 before getting knocked out after losing the semi-final against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi.

Buttler, who will be leading England for the first time in a T20 World Cup, agreed T20 is an unpredictable format and even a single player can take the game away from the opposition on his day. The England skipper said they have had a good preparation and are looking forward to getting off to a good start in the tournament.

Outgoing BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly will be back as the president of his state cricket board, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), the former India captain said on Saturday.

Ganguly, who had to step down from the BCCI president's post as there is no precedence of anyone continuing in the top job for more than three years, had been the CAB president for four years between 2015 and 2019 before coming to the apex body.

"Yes, I will be contesting the CAB polls. I plan to file my nomination on October 22. I have been in CAB for five years and as per Lodha rules, I can continue for another four years," Ganguly told PTI.

There was a strong buzz that Ganguly's elder brother Snehasish would contest in place of Avishek Dalmiya for the top post, but the former India player's nomination changes a lot of equations.

"I will finalise my panel on October 20. Let's see," Ganguly said.

Those who are tracking the developments feel that a lot will depend on what kind of decisions the powers that be in the BCCI take on the ICC chairmanship.

"With Sourav, there will always be an element of drama involved. In 2019, he beat Brijesh (Patel) for BCCI president's post in a literal photo finish with power equations changing at last moment," a senior BCCI official and a close witness to the events then told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

"Don't forget that there is an ICC chairman's nomination to be filed on October 20. Whether the powerful people in the BCCI have a change of heart, is the question," he said.

As of now, Ganguly's chances of becoming the BCCI nominee for the ICC chairmanship are low, if one goes by the mood in the Board.

If there is no change in heart among the BCCI mandarins, then Ganguly as CAB president would mean that he would remain relevant in the Board's administrative corridors in some capacity, being their representative at the various board meetings.

But there are a lot of equations that are always at play, and the picture will only be clear post the BCCI's Annual General Meeting (AGM) on October 18 in Mumbai.

UAE's teenage sensation Aayan Khan scripted history on Sunday (October 16) as he became the youngest player to feature in the T20 World Cup. The young batting all-rounder was in the playing XI as UAE locked horns with Netherlands in their opening game of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022.

Khan broke the record held by former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir as he made his maiden T20 World Cup appearance at the age of 16 years and 335 days. It was not a perfect outing for Khan on his T20 World Cup debut but the game ended up being a massive learning experience for the teenage prodigy.

It was a thrilling last-over finish as Netherlands survived a mighty scare in the run-chase to beat UAE by three wickets. Khan, who came out to bat at number eight for UAE, found himself in a tricky situation as his team were 104/6 with just nine balls left in the innings.

Khan scored 5 off 7 balls before he was caught by Fred Klaassen off the bowling of Tom Cooper on the penultimate delivery of the final over as UAE finished with 111 runs on the board in their quota of 20 overs. Their bowlers produced a valiant effort but failed to defend the total as the game went down the wire.

Ayan, a right-hand batter and a left-arm spinner, also bowled three overs during Netherlands' run-chase and managed to get his first wicket in the T20 World Cup. He dismissed Colin Ackermann on 17 off 19 balls to bag his maiden wicket and finished with impressive figures of 1/15 off his three overs.

All you need to know about UAE's teenage prodigy Aayan Khan

Khan, who was born in the Indian state of Goa, rose through the ranks in UAE's domestic circuit before making his debut for the national team during their tour of Bangladesh in September earlier this year. The 16-year-old was part of the UAE U-19 team during the ICC U-19 World Cup in January this year where he impressed with the bat.

Khan played a brilliant knock of 93 runs in a clash against West Indies in the U-19 World Cup before he was fast-tracked into the national team. He was first included in UAE's reserves for the Asia Cup qualifiers before making his debut against Bangladesh in September.

The talented teenager idolises Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya, however, his bowling action has been modelled on another Indian star - Ravindra Jadeja. His father wanted him to bowl with his left arm as he wanted his son to be a fast bowler like former India pacer Irfan Pathan, however, Khan's coaches at the Desert Club where he trains in the UAE decided to turn him into a spinner.

Namibia pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the T20 World Cup 2022 on the opening day of the tournament as they stunned Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka at the Simonds Stadium in Geelong on Sunday (October 16). Ranked 14th in the ICC T20I team rankings, Namibia produced an excellent all-round performance to outclass mighty Sri Lanka by 55 runs in the first round of Group A.

Namibia rode on a brilliant all-round performance from Jan Frylinck, who played a great cameo of 28-ball 44 down the order before picking up a couple of wickets with the ball to power his team to a comprehensive victory. Asked to bat first, Namibia posted a strong total of 163 runs on the board before their bowlers comfortably defended the total.

Reacting to his team's stunning win against the Asia Cup champions, Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus called it a historic day for Namibian cricket. Namibia had qualified for the T20 World Cup last year, finishing second behind Sri Lanka in a group that also has Ireland and Netherlands. They have since been on the rise and have given a great account of their skills and talent in the shortest format.

"Incredible journey, last year was a special experience for us. We've started a great win, but lot of work to do throughout this tournament still. It's been a historic day for us. The opening day has been quite special but we want to kick on from here and qualify for the Super 12 stage," said Namibia skipper Erasmus.

However, he insisted the team has a long way to go if they are to qualify for the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup. With the big win against Sri Lanka, Namibia are well placed to make it to the next round but will be wary of slip-ups in their remaining two games against UAE and Netherlands.

"We understand the bigger picture as well. Credit goes to Pierre (de Bruyn) the way he has installed coaching to this team, one that's a winning culture and one that sticks together. With the limited resources, I don't think there's anyone else that could run such a tight ship," said Erasmus crediting the coaching staff for the team's good show.

Namibia were 93/6 at one stage during their innings with Sri Lankan bowlers looking in control. However, Frylinck (44) combined with JJ Smit, who scored an unbeaten 31 off just 16 balls to propel the Erasmus-led side to a fighting total of 163 runs.

In reply, the Sri Lankan batting line-up fell like a pack of cards as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Some disciplined bowling from the Namibian pacers kept Sri Lanka on the toes as the Asia Cup champions were skittled out for 108 runs in 19 overs. Sri Lanka have two games remaining against UAE and Netherlands, respectively and can't afford another slip-up in the tournament.

Historic day for us, says Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus after thrashing Sri Lanka in T20 World Cup

India will kick off their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 23 at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne. While there is significant hype around the clash with the encounter being deemed as a virtual decider for the top spot in Group 2 of Super 12, former India opener Gautam Gambhir has warned the Indian team to be wary of another opposition which is peaking at the right time.

Gambhir believes Sri Lanka can pose a huge threat to the major teams at the T20 World Cup this year as they are running high on confidence after winning the Asia Cup 2022. Sri Lanka had stunned India in the group stage before defeating Pakistan in the final to clinch the Asia Cup trophy for the sixth time earlier this year.

Gambhir feels Sri Lanka are peaking at the right time in the shortest format having won the Asia Cup and will take a lot of confidence into the tournament.

“Sri Lanka, because of the kind of success they have had at the Asia Cup. The way they are playing, the way they are probably peaking at the right time. And with Chameera and Lahiru Kumara coming in, they probably got most of their places covered. They are going to be a threat and so they are going to take a lot of confidence into the T20 World Cup,” the former India opener said during a discussion on Star Sports.

However, Sri Lanka's shock defeat at the hands of 14th-ranked Namibia in the qualifiers proved Gambhir's prediction slightly wrong on Sunday (October 16). In one of the biggest upsets in the tournament so far, Namibia thrashed Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka by 55 runs to get off to a winning start.

Explained: What Sri Lanka's shock defeat against Namibia could mean for India in T20 World Cup 2022?

14th-ranked Namibia stunned Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka, beating them by a comfortable margin of 55 runs to get off to a winning start in the T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 16). Namibia were far from favourites heading into the clash against the Lankans, but batted brilliantly and followed it up with an exceptional bowling performance to clinch a comprehensive victory.

Namibia, an associate nation, had given an account of their talent and skill in the T20 World Cup last year. While they were tagged as minnows against Sri Lanka, the Gerhard Erasmus-led side always appeared a confident unit in their opener against Dasun Shanaka's men at the Simonds Stadium in Geelong on Sunday.

Namibia lost the toss and were asked to bat first and got off to a stuttering start. They lost openers Michael van Lingen (3) and Divan la Cock (9) cheaply and were reduced to 16/2 inside the first three overs as Sri Lanka looked in cruise control. However, the Namibia batters staged a valiant fightback and finished off well to post a seemingly strong total of 163 runs on the board.

Jan Frylinck top-scored with a quickfire 44 off 28 balls while JJ Smit played a sensational cameo of 16-ball 31 down the order. The likes of Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton (20), Stephan Baard (26) and skipper Erasmus (20) also made vital contributions as the Namibia batters tackled the Sri Lankan bowlers well.

After a valiant batting performance, the Namibian bowlers taught Sri Lanka how to bowl on the pitch by utilising the conditions well. Unlike Sri Lanka's short ball barrage, the Namibian pacers kept it full and let the ball do the talking throughout Sri Lanka's run-chase as they bundled out the Asia Cup champions for a paltry 108.

David Wiese and Bernard Scholtz were the pick of the bowlers for Namibia as they picked up a couple of wickets apiece while Frylinck produced a brilliant all-round performance as he followed up his 28-ball 44 with an exceptional spell of 2/26 in his four overs.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will have to register a big win to get their net run rate back on track after their shocking defeat on Sunday. Sri Lanka have games remaining against UAE and Netherlands and can't afford any further slip-ups to make it to the next round.

Captains of all 16 teams taking part in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 shared the stage in Melbourne on Saturday as they addressed the press ahead of the start of the showpiece event down under. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was under the spotlight along with Pakistan captain Babar Azam as the duo responded to several questions on the much-anticipated marquee clash between the arch-rivals on October 23.

India have enjoyed unprecedented success against Pakistan when it comes to World Cup meetings, however, the Men in Blue suffered their first-ever defeat against the arch-rivals in a World Cup game in the T20 World Cup last year. Pakistan have now defeated India twice in their last three meetings to enjoy an edge over the Men in Blue.

"Even the players from the previous generation have told us that the conversations were all about home, life and sometimes even about who's getting a new car and what car," added the Indian skipper.

'We talk about our families, cars': India captain Rohit Sharma opens up on camaraderie with Pakistan players

Sourav Ganguly's imminent exit from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has led to intense speculations in the Indian cricket fraternity. The former India captain is all set to be replaced by 1983 World Cup winner Roger Binny after completing a three-year team as the president of the Indian cricket board.

Amid speculations that several BCCI members were not happy with Ganguly's tenure and were against him continuing as the board president, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal has cleared the air. Dhumal, who is likely to become the next IPL chairman, said all board members were happy with the work done by the board during Ganguly's tenure and the rumours floating around his exit are baseless.

"There has been no BCCI president who has served for more than three years in independent India. All this media speculation about Dada being told or a few members were against him, they are all baseless," Dhumal was quoted as saying by the news agency PTI.

"Nobody spoke a word against him. All the Board members were extremely happy and satisfied with the entire team and how BCCI was run in the last three years despite the challenges posed by COVID-19.

"Dada has had a very distinguished career as an India captain, one of the best-ever leaders. As an administrator, he took the entire team along and we worked as one team," he added.

The Indian cricket board is set for a major revamp after Ganguly's exit as the president. As per reports, the former India captain wanted to continue in the top post but some board members were against him getting an extension. He was offered IPL chairmanship but Ganguly reportedly politely declined the offer.

Dhumal revealed he would have been part of the new IPL committee under Ganguly had the 50-year-old accepted the IPL chairman post. However, Ganguly's refusal to become the new IPL chairman paved way for Dhumal to take over the post replacing Brijesh Patel.

Mitchell Starc to Trent Boult: Top contenders to finish as highest wicket-taker at T20 World Cup 2022

Mitchell Starc reignited the debate over Deepti Sharma's run out of England batter Charlotte Dean at the non-striker's end after he used her name in warning England Jos Buttler during the third T20I between Australia and England on Friday. Starc warned Buttler over leaving his crease early at the non-striker's end, stating that he is not Deepti but that the England skipper should not back up too far before the delivery was bowled.

Deepti had run Dean out at the non-striker's end during the third ODI between India and England at the Lord's Cricket Ground in London, triggering mixed reactions from the cricket fraternity. While several English players criticised Deepti for going against the 'spirit of the game' with her actions, the Indian all-rounder also received support from many.

Despite ICC changing the rules and recognising a bowler running a batter on the non-striker's end as a proper run-out, opinions have been divided over the controversial mode of dismissal which was referred to as 'Mankad' earlier.

On Friday, Starc caught Buttler laving the crease too early on the non-striker's end but decided against running him out. However, the Australian warned him for his actions and used Deepti's name during the argument, leaving many Indian fans disappointed.

"I am not Deepti, but I won't do it. Doesn't mean you can leave early," Starc was caught telling Buttler on the stump mic during the game.

Former India cricketer Hemang Badani was furious with Starc's decision to use Deepti's name during the argument as he slammed the Australian pacer and advised him to 'grow up'. Badani said Starc should not have brought Deepti's name in the argument even if he just wanted to warn Buttler and not run him out.

"Grow up Starc. That’s really poor from you. What Deepti did was well within the rules of the game. If you only want to warn the non striker and not get him out that’s fine and your decision to make but you bringing Deepti into this isn’t what the cricket world expects of you," Badani, who played 4 Tests and 40 ODIs for India, wrote in a tweet.

They have shown outstanding teamwork: PM Narendra Modi hails Indian women's team after Asia Cup triumph

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur lauded her bowlers and the fielding unit after the team's triumphant campaign in the Women's Asia Cup, which ended with a lop-sided final against Sri Lanka here on Saturday.

India maintained their dominance in the tournament with an eight-wicket demolition of a self-destructing Sri Lanka in the title clash for their seventh title in eight editions.

Sri Lanka, who were playing their first tournament final in 14 years, imploded after opting to bat on pitch that was slow and offered turn. They could only manage 65 for nine which India knocked off in 8.3 overs. Smriti Mandhana struck a sublime 51 not out off 25 balls.

"We should credit our bowlers. Our fielding unit was good from ball one and we discussed that we should not give away easy runs. You have to read the wicket and accordingly place the fielders in right positions," Harmanpreet said at the presentation ceremony.

"We read the wicket well and positioned fielders accordingly. We were not looking at the scoreboard but only decided our five-over targets. We never thought about what is the total on the board and batted accordingly."

Player of the Match Renuka Singh sent back Hasini Perera on the very first ball she faced. The pacer finished with excellent figures of 3/5 in the final.

"Very happy because the last few games I didn't bowl well. I practiced with my coach and the staff and they really helped me get back my rhythm.

"Just focussed on my basics and got success. My whole team supported me really well and credit should go to my captain, coach and the staff," Renuka said.

All-rounder Deepti Sharma, who gave away just seven runs in her four overs, was declared the Player of the Series.

"Really happy with the way we performed as unit from the first game till today. We executed what was discussed in the meeting. I just back my strengths and those things helped me a lot in this tournament.

"The wickets were slow and before this tournament, I worked a lot on my batting and those sessions really helped me. This win gives us a lot of confidence going into the upcoming series as well," Deepti said.

After an outing in which her team just didn't turn up, Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu expressed her disappointment, though she was happy with the bowlers.

"Tough day as a team, not a good batting display in the finals and I'm really upset today. Next we have T20 World Cup and we learned a lot of things in this tournament and as a batting unit, we have to stick with our plans. I'm really happy with my bowling unit.

"We have a couple of young players and hope they continue their performances as a batting unit. We do not have a lot of experienced players, but they are good players and think they will play a lot of cricket in the future," Chamari said.

The Indians bowled with discipline but poor shot selection contributed more to Sri Lanka's steep slide. After a memorable win over Pakistan in the semifinals, it seemed the occasion got the better of Sri Lanka.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur lauds bowlers after India bag seventh Asia Cup title

Australian pacer Mitchell Starc issued a cheeky warning to England batter Jos Buttler about leaving the crease early at the non-striker's end during the third and final T20I between the two sides at the Manuka Oval in Canberra on Friday. The game ended in a no-result after rain hampered the proceedings.

England batted first in the rain-marred encounter which was earlier reduced to a 12-overs-a-side contest. During England's innings, Starc was heard warning Buttler about leaving the crease early at the non-striker's end. The Australian pacer cheekily referred to Indian women's team all-rounder Deepti Sharma while warning Buttler.

The incident happened during the fifth over of England's innings when Buttler was at the non-striker's end with Dawid Malan facing Starc. The left-arm pacer spotted Buttler leaving the crease early and warned him to stay inside the crease. However, Buttler refused Starc's claim and said he was not backing up too much.

"I'm not Deepti, but I won't do it. That doesn't mean you can leave early," Starc was caught telling Buttler on the stump mic as he walked back to bowl the fifth delivery of the over.

"I don't think I did," Buttler responded.

Azeem Rafiq, whose allegations of racism plunged English cricket into crisis, is leaving Britain to protect his family from further abuse and intimidation, a report said on Friday. The ex-Yorkshire spinner is due to move overseas in the near future with his wife, children and parents, the Cricketer magazine reported.

The Pakistan-born former player first raised allegations of racism and bullying in September 2020, related to his two spells at Yorkshire, which eventually led to a mass clear-out of senior boardroom figures and coaching staff.

Rafiq, 31, gave harrowing testimony to a committee of lawmakers about his treatment in November last year. The club and a number of individuals were charged in June this year by the England and Wales Cricket Board following an investigation by the governing body into how the county dealt with the racism allegations.

Rafiq previously said his family had been subjected to "threats, attacks and intimidation" since he spoke out against his former club. The report in the Cricketer refers to a spate of recent threats made online and in person to the former player.

Earlier this week, Rafiq was among five current and former players reprimanded by the Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) for historical social media posts of a "racist" nature. All of the individuals admitted culpability in relation to the charges brought by the England and Wales Cricket Board. Rafiq, who had previously apologised for posting the anti-Semitic messages, repeated his apology following the announcement of the disciplinary action.

He was in sublime touch during the second ODI against South Africa and missed out on a well-deserved hundred by a whisker.

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has slammed Babar Azam asking him to come out of his average mindset. Afridi was not happy with Babar's timid approach during Pakistan's recent clash against Bangladesh in the ongoing tri-series in New Zealand.

Afridi's comments came in response to Babar's views ahead of Pakistan's game against Bangladesh in Christchurch. When asked about what kind of target they were looking to set for Bangladesh, Babar had said the Men in Green were looking at something close to 160.

Pakistan went on to post 167 runs on the board batting first and ended up winning the game comfortably by 21 runs. However, Babar's comments didn't go down well with Afridi, who has advised the Pakistan skipper to ditch his timid approach in T20Is and look at setting up big totals against all kinds of teams.

"Babar must come out of this average mindset and think big. If scoring 160 runs for the target against Bangladesh was his big intent, then what is he going to do against stronger teams," said Afridi.

While he criticised Babar for his approach, Afridi extended support to his opening partner Mohammad Rizwan, who has also been facing criticism from all corners over his sluggish approach with the bat. Both Babar and Rizwan have been slammed by many for failing to accelerate quickly as a result of which the team suffers when setting up targets.

However, Afridi urged Rizwan to continue playing the way he has been and ignore the critics. Rizwan is currently the top-ranked T20 batter in the world and has been a consistent run-getter for Pakistan in the shortest format.

"The actual thing is the beginning. Babar and Rizwan should score the chunk of runs [for other batters]. Rizwan shouldn't listen to anyone," said Afridi.

ICC also listed the charges against the cricketer, with the global cricket governing body saying he was involved in "fixing or contriving in any way or otherwise influencing improperly" on two separate occasions.

ICC general manager, Integrity Unit, Alex Marshal, said, "We first encountered Mehar Chhayakar through his involvement in organising a corrupt cricket tournament in Ajman, in 2018. The charges for which he has now received a lengthy ban are further examples of his continuing efforts to corrupt and damage our sport.

"We will be relentless in pursuing and disrupting the people who try to corrupt cricket. With a ban of 14 years, the Tribunal has sent a clear message to anyone intending to corrupt our game." Chhayakar`s offences are linked to the previous cases of former UAE players Qadeer Khan and Gulam Shabbir. Both Qadeer and Shabbir accepted sanctions for admitted breaches of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code relating to approaches they received from Chhayakar.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ramiz Raja has admitted the Indian team remains far ahead in skill level compared to Pakistan. Babar Azam-led Pakistan have managed to outclass their arch-rivals twice in their last three meetings but Raja admitted India are still ahead of Pakistan in terms of quality.

Pakistan defeated India by ten wickets to bring an end to their losing streak against their arch-rivals in World Cup matches last year. The Men in Green had comprehensively defeated India in their opening encounter at the T20 World Cup 2021 to record their first-ever victory against the Men in Blue in a World Cup game.

Pakistan and India then met twice in the Asia Cup 2022earlier this year where both teams managed to bag one win each. Skill ki baat thi, Indians skill level me hamse bahut aage hain, abhi bhi batting me aage hain. Magar ek mental block tha jisko clear karna tha. Aur vo kiya iss team ne ek young captain ke under. (It's after a long time that we won against India. We should be lauding this team. Indians are far ahead in skill level than us, especially in batting. But it was important to clear that mental block and this team did that under a young captain)," Raja said while speaking on Pakistan channel Samaa TV.

India and Pakistan have not taken part in a bilateral series for nearly a decade now as the two teams only meet in major ICC competitions due to the political tensions between the two countries. India and Pakistan will resume their epic rivalry in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 which gets underway in Australia on October 16.

India are far ahead in skill level compared to Pakistan: PCB chief Ramiz Raja makes honest admission

Deepak Chahar has been ruled out of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 due to a back injury. The pacer, who was part of India's stand-by list for the World Cup, was in contention to make it to the main squad after Jasprit Bumrah was sidelined from the tournament due to an injury. However, Chahar will not travel to Australia for the showpiece event.

In his absence, BCCI is all set to send three pacers as reinforcements for the Indian squad. Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur will travel to Australia and join the rest of the Indian contingent down under. Shami was originally part of India's stand-by list while Siraj and Shardul are the new inclusions.

Shami remains the frontrunner to take Bumrah's spot in the main 15-man squad now that Chahar is no more in the fray. However, he faces serious competition from Siraj, who impressed in the recently-concluded ODI series against South Africa at home. While one of them will make it to the main squad, the other two will be part of the reserves.

"Deepak will take some time to get fit. His back issue has flared up again. His ankle is fine and there wasn't any problem there. So BCCI is sending three reinforcements. Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur," a BCCI official was quoted as saying by PTI.

The Indan selectors do not have much time to name the official replacement for Bumrah as October 15 is the deadline to announce the final changes in the squad. The T20 World Cup s set to get underway on October 16 with India opening their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 23.

The Indian squad is already in Perth, Australia where they have been fine-tuning their preparations ahead of the start of the T20 World Cup. India recently defeated Western Australia XI in a warm-up match and are scheduled to play one more practice match against the same team in Perth before taking on New Zealand and Australia in two more warm-up matches.

In the absence of Bumrah, expectations will be high from Shami if he is roped into the squad as the official replacement for the injured pacer. Shami has the experience and the skills to be the strike bowler for the Men in Blue in the tournament, however, he has not played a T20I for India since the T20 World Cup last year which remains a huge concern for the team.
