India wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson has said he has been asked by the Indian team management to take up the finisher's role in white-ball cricket going forward. Samson, who has mostly batted up the order in his career so far, is ready to bat lower down the order and finish games for India when required.

While Dinesh Karthik has been India's designated finisher in T20Is, the Men in Blue have looked up to the likes of Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja to don the role in ODIs ever since the departure of the legendary MS Dhoni. Samson has been batting at no.5 for India in their ongoing ODI series against South Africa at home and has looked in good touch.

He slammed a brilliant knock of 86 runs in the first ODI against the Proteas and followed it up with a gritty 30 in the second ODI. Samson said he has been training to bat in several different positions and the message from the dressing room has been that he should be ready to finish games for India.

"Absolutely, I have been practicing different kind of roles and I think last couple of years, I have put in time to understand different types of roles that I need to play in different teams. So, I am enjoying it," Samson told Star Sports ahead of the third and final ODI against South Africa on Tuesday.

"I have been given instructions to be ready to do this finishing role from last one year. Physically, I have been doing top-order batting but mentally I have been understanding the game better on how to react to situations better and how people have done it beautifully in the past. Learning from the history, so yes lot of learning has gone into this," he added.

With India's T20 World Cup squad already in Australia to prepare for the showpiece event that gets underway later this month, India have fielded a second-string side for the ODI series against South Africa under Shikhar Dhawan's captaincy.

The T20 World Cup 2022 edition is set to get underway on October 16. While all the major teams are finalishing their team combination. the lowly-ranked sides are set to lock horns in the qualifying round which kicks off on Sunday. The qualifiers will see previous winners West Indies (two-time champions) and Sri Lanka (who won the elusive cup in 2014) as they will fight hard with the other teams to book a place in the main draw of the competition, which starts on October 22.

Ahead of the qualifiers, Universe Boss Chris Gayle made a bold claim. Speaking to Dainik Jagran, the 43-year-old predicted the T20 World Cup finalists. He said, "I think there could be a final match between West Indies and Australia. Yes, it is definitely that the players who are included in the West Indies team are talented and can prove to be dangerous for any team. As everyone knows it is just a matter of adapting your strategy in the right way on match day. I hope the team plays well," Gayle added.

Many former cricketers and experts of the game have shared their predictions in the run-up to the eighth edition of the T20 World Cup, ot be held in Australia. In last year's T20 WC, Kieron Pollard-led West Indies had qualified for the main round but faltered against big teams to bow out in the Super 12. T20 World Cup: Not India, Pakistan or England! Chris Gayle predicts finalists for mega event

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) reprimanded five former and current cricketers on Monday (October 10) over their old social media posts. The historical posts on social media by Jack Brooks, Andrew Gale, Azeem Rafiq and women's team star Danielle Wyatt and Evelyn Jones were found to be prejudicial in nature by the Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) of the ECB.

The five cricketers had been charged earlier this year for breaching the ECB Directve 3.3 which mentions no such actions should be taken that "may be prejudicial to the interests of cricket or which may bring the game of cricket or any cricketer or group of cricketers into disrepute".

Jones and Wyatt also admitted to breaching the ECB Directive 3.4 which urges all cricketers to abide by the anti-discrimination code. The five players will face no further action as Chris Tickle, the CDC Adjucator decided that a reprimand will be enough in all five cases.

Rafiq, who was under the spotlight last year and earlier this year after his accusations of institutional racism in the Yorkshire cricket club, was reprimanded for anti-semitic posts on Facebook. Former Yorkshire coach Gale was sanctioned for his offensive old posts on Twitter.

Rafiq, who had earlier spoken against facing racism in England cricket, said he was "ashamed and embarrassed" for his own ant-Semic comments during a social media exchange with his former England U-19 teammate Ateeq Javed in 2011. The duo had referred to a third unknown teammate as a 'Jew' for failing to pay his bill.

Reacting to the Cricket Discipline Commission's decision to reprimand him, Rafiq said the punishment is 'deserved' and that he will fully accept the panel's judgement. He also stated that he wishes to repeat his apology to the Jewish community.

Nepal cricket team star Sandeep Lamichhane has been sent to seven-day police remand for further investigation in the rape case against him. The former Nepal cricket team captain has been accused of raping a minor in a hotel in the country. The Kathmandu District Court sent him into police custody on Monday.

The victim had filed a complaint against the Nepal cricketer following which he had to pull out of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) last month. Following the arrest warrant, Lamichhane, who is Nepal's most sought-after cricketer at present, was sacked as the captain of the Nepal cricket team and was also suspended from representing the country in any form of cricket. Earlier this month, Lamichhane had taken to social media to continue to deny the allegations levelled against him. He expressed faith in Nepal's judicial system and said he is looking forward to cooperating with the officials in the case to ensure he can prove his innocence and return to playing cricket as soon as possible.

"Your support, faith, trust and your critical remarks are what I have taken as my assets, motivation and strength. I know I am facing a difficult time of conspiracy and wrongful allegation and the ramification of its effect is something unimaginable.

I am sure there must be some mechanism of compensating to the accused who proven to be innocent in our legal system. I will soon seek legal support against wrongful prosecution and allegation made against me and I am sure I will get the justice and will return to the cricket ground soon to make the name and fame of my beloved country and I pray for speedy trial," Lamichhane said.

"As per my sincere commitment to submit myself at the authority of Nepal, I am landing at 10:00 am from Qatar Airways in the Tribhuvan International Airport at Kathmandu. I have already informed to the Police Authority in written about my submission at will.

I have also made humble request to the authority for the presence of my lawful attorney Saroj Krishna Ghimire ( Advocate) during the process of my submission to police authority to ensure my safety and security. I will fully cooperate in all stages of investigation and will fight legal battle to prove my innocence. Let the justice prevail," he added.

Australian legend Ian Chappell has picked Team India superstar Virat Kohli as the best Test batter of the current generation. Kohli, who is known for his incredible consistency, has been breaking records for fun across formats for a number of years now and is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time.

He has often been pitted against the likes of Steve Smith, Joe Root and Kane Williamson among others when it comes to the best batter debate in world cricket. However, the former India captain's consistency along with his superior technique and ability to deliver in all three formats make him stand apart from his closest rivals.

In his latest column for ESPNCricinfo, Chappell dwelled into the best Test batter debate in the current era and went on to pick Kohli over the likes of Smith, Root, Williamson and Babar Azam. The Australian legend called Kohli a fine player with a great range of strokes.

However, he insisted Kohli's performances in the whites have dipped recently and he needs to rekindle his magic to catch up with others.

"Kohli is a fine player with a great stroke range, a highly competitive nature, and a thoughtful approach to batting. When asked why he doesn't indulge in typical short-form risky shots, he replied by saying, I don't want them to creep into my Test game. However, whatever the case - the ageing process, or his having retired as captain - Kohli's output has started to wane and he needs to rekindle the magic," Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNcricinfo.

"It's hard to choose the best player from that talented group. And when you consider that some old-timers preferred Victor Trumper's artistic style over the acknowledged best batter, Sir Donald Bradman, the difficulty is not surprising. From among these players on their best days, it's hard to surpass the highly competitive Kohli. His twin centuries in a failed but brave victory attempt at Adelaide Oval in 2014 remain my favourite innings among those produced by this group," he added.

Kohli, who made his Test debut for India against West Indies in June 2011, has come a long way since then. Two-three years into his Test career, Kohli was on the verge of getting dropped due to his average performances, however, backing from former captain MS Dhoni brought his Test career on track.

Kohli has been one of India's most prolific run-getters in the white over the last few years with 8074 runs in 102 matches at an average close to 50 (49.53), including 27 centuries and 28 fifties under his belt. Kohli is also India's most successful Test captain of all time with 40 wins in 68 Test matches.

'Hard to surpass him': Australia legend Ian Chappell picks Virat Kohli as best Test batter of this generation

India defeated Western Australia XI by 13 runs in their first warm-up match at the WACA Ground in Perth on Monday (October 10) to kick off their preparations on a confident note in Australia ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022. Suryakumar Yadav continued his fine form with the bat as he played a brilliant knock of 52 runs off 35 balls while Arshdeep Singh was the hero with the ball for India.

India went into the game without two of their key batters in the form of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant opened the batting with captain Rohit Sharma. Opting to bat first, India got off to a shaky start as the visitors lost both Rohit (3) and Pant (9) cheaply before Suryakumar steadied the ship with his fifty.

In Kohli's absence, Deepak Hooda batted at number three and looked in good touch during his 22 off 14 balls laced with a solitary six and two fours. Suryalumar struck three fours and as many sixes en route to his 52 off 35 as he added 49 runs for the fourth wicket with Hardik Pandya (27 off 20).

The Indian batters were up against a quality Western Australia bowling attack consisting of the likes of Jason Behrendorff, Jhye Richardson and Andrew Tye among others. India managed to post a fighting total of 158 runs on the board before the bowlers impressed to secure a comfortable victory for the visitors.

Arshdeep was the star with the ball as he once again bowled a sensational spell with the new ball picking up the wickets of Western Australia opener Nick Hobson (1) and no.3 Aaron Hardie in his very first over. He bowled two more excellent overs and picked up another wicket to finish with brilliant figures of 3/6 in his three overs.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Yuzvendra Chahal managed to pick up two wickets each as India restricted Western Australia on 145/8 in 20 overs to win the game by 13 runs. India will face Western Australia once again in their second warm-up game on October 13 before facing Australia and New Zealand in their two official warm-up games.

India will begin their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 23. The Men in Blue still haven't finalised the replacement for injured Jasprit Bumrah ahead of the start of the tournament and will be hoping to rope in a quality replacement for the fast bowler, who will miss the T20 World Cup due to a back injury.

England locked horns with Australia in the first of the three-match T20I series, at Perth, on Sunday (October 9). Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, which kicks off in Australia on October 16, the two heavyweights are finalishing their team combination and trying to tick all boxes ahead of the main draw of the competition, which will begin on October 22.

During the series opener, Buttler's 68 and Alex Hales' 84 propelled England to 208 for 6. In reply, David Warner's 44-ball 73 kept Aussies in the hunt before they were restricted for 200 for 9, to lose by eight runs. During the run-chase, the 17th over saw Matthew Wade block pacer Mark Wood from completing a return catch off his own bowling.

As Wade top-edged a delivery, from Wood, he stepped out of the crease for a run and was quickly sent back. During this time, he blocked the Englishman who came towards the striker's end to take a catch. The actions were clearly illegal as Wade was 'obstructing play' but England skipper Jos Buttler didn't appeal.

"I was looking at the ball the whole time, so I wasn't sure what happened. They asked if I wanted to appeal, but I thought we are here for a long time in Australia so would be a risky one to go for so early in the trip," Buttler said at the post-match presentation. On being asked if he would look at such an incident in a different way during a World Cup encounter, he replied 'Maybe, yeah.'

'Bullshitting about spirit of the game...': Ex-India pacer slams Buttler for not appealing against Wade

Shreyas Iyer struck a sublime century while Ishan Kishan displayed his brute force against a formidable South African attack to set up a series-levelling seven-wicket win for India in the second ODI here on Sunday. Mohammed Siraj led an inexperienced Indian bowling lineup brilliantly to restrict South Africa to 278/7 after the visitors opted to bat.

Iyer made his second ODI hundred (113 not out off 111) and shared a match-winning 161-run stand with Kishan (93 off84) to ensure a comfortable win in 45.5 overs for a second-string Indian team. The 24-year-old Kishan looked like a transformed batter and showed different layers of his batting by switching to beast mode after a responsible start.

The lefthander smashed seven sixes and four boundaries in his career-best knock from 84 balls, while Iyer played the perfect foil. The designated vice-captain of the series, Iyer, has been in top form in ODIs, having slammed one century and four fifties in his last six innings.

Locked one-all after two matches, both teams will play the series decider in Delhi on Tuesday. At India's optional nets ahead of the game, Ishan had made his intentions clear when he clobbered a loose ball with brute force, ramming into the grill of the MS Dhoni pavillion.

On match day, the stage was just perfect for the diminutive batter to boss at his homeground. India needed 231 from 41.1 overs when a classy-looking Shubman Gill (28; 26b) perished to a gravity-defying low catch by Rabada on his follow-through.

Kishan came in and was at his vigilant best. He ran hard for singles and overcame a hostile bowling spell from Nortje when he was clocking 145-plus clicks on a slow Ranchi wicket. The lefthander however did not panic as he reached 29 off 46 balls.

South Africa then started operating with spinners with stand-in skipper Maharaj looking to dismiss Kishan for a second successive time.

But Kishan took the attack on the left-arm spinner and smashed him for three sixes including two in four balls.
The only blip in his innings was when he mistimed one to Rabada but this time he dropped a sitter.

In the next delivery, Kishan took a blow on his elbow that seemingly unsettled him before he fell agonisingly short of a maiden century. Earlier, Aiden Markram (79 off 89 balls) and Reeza Hendricks (74 off 76) looked in control of the proceedings in the middle overs.

But Siraj triggered the collapse and also took a stunning forward running catch to dismiss a dangerous-looking Heinrich Klaasen (30).

He mixed up the slower ones intelligently, bowled with a tight line and length and did not even give the in-form David Miller (35 not out) a chance to put him away. He conceded only three runs in the 50th over to end with figures 10-1-38-3.

From being 169/3, which came courtesy a 129 run-a-ball partnership by Hendricks and Markram, South Africa lost three quick wickets with some clever field placements and bowling rotation by India skipper Shikhar Dhawan.

Even the in-form Miller struggled to get going at the death and Siraj came out on top as they scored just 57 runs from the last 10 overs with the loss of two wickets.

Debutant Shabaz Ahmed jumped in joy after bagging his maiden international wicket as he trapped Janneman Malan in front of the stumps.

It seemed a perfect start for India with the visitors' score reading 40/2 after 10 overs which had just seven boundaries on a dull and dry JSCA wicket.

But what followed was a composed and calculative approach by the middle-order duo of Markram and Hendricks who were happy to bide time, play out dot balls and forge a partnership.

From 20th over onwards, they stepped it up, picking odd boundaries every over and in no time they reached their respective fifties -- Hendricks in 58 balls, and Markram in 64 balls.

Hendricks smashed Kuldeep over wide long-on in the 27th over as they started to make their intentions clear.
But thankfully for India, Hendricks got out to a loose short-pitched delivery from Siraj.

It opened the gates for India and with some smart captaincy by Dhawan they managed to sneak in three wickets for 46 runs including that of a dangerous-looking Klaasen.

Iyer, Kishan slam brilliant knocks as India beat South Africa by 7 wickets in 2nd ODI to level series

India are yet to name an official replacement for marquee pacer Jasprit Bumrah who has been ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2022 due to a back injury. Bumrah, who recently made his comeback after undergoing recovery from a back issue, was ruled out of the T20 World Cup after suffering a back stress fracture last month.

One of the best fast bowlers in the world at present, Bumrah's skills and experience made him a valuable asset for the Indian team and there is no like-to-like replacement for the premier pacer considering the qualities he brought. However, India faces the herculean task of replacing the right-arm pacer with someone who can negate his absence if not bring the same skillset to the table.

While Mohammed Shami is reportedly the favourite to take Bumrah's spot in India's T20 World Cup 2022 squad, the likes of Deepak Chahar and Mohammed Siraj also remain in contention. Recently, former India wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel shared his views on who should be Bumrah's replacement for the World Cup starting later this month.

Parthiv picked Shami as an ideal replacement for Bumrah considering his experience. However, Shami has not played for India in a T20I game since the T20 World Cup last year. He was set to make his comeback in the T20I series against Australia last month but had to miss out after testing positive for COVID-19.

Shami is currently undergoing mandatory fitness tests at the NCA post recovering from COVID-19 before he can be considered for selection in the World Cup squad.

"There are a lot of options for India to choose from but unfortunately, the finest option (Mohammed Shami) that exists isn't playing at the moment as he has got Covid," Parthiv said in a chat on Cricbuzz.

"Most certainly I really feel on this squad, Mohammad Shami will replace Jasprit Bumrah. Hopefully, as a result of we've got 20 days to go and he has virtually recovered from Covid-19. Before than the World Cup, India will play two practice matches in Perth, then vs Australia, and against New Zealand. So he'll get match-time. Based on my opinion, he deserves a spot. I really feel he's the frontrunner," he said.

While Shami has to prove his fitness to be included in India's main squad, Chahar's back injury has resurfaced putting his contention in doubt. The selectors will soon have to finalise Bumrah's replacement as the deadline to announce it is October 15.

As per reports, Shami is likely to travel to Australia next week and join the rest of the Indian squad in Perth. India will play warm-up matches against Australia and New Zealand before opening their T20 World Cup campaign against Pakistan.

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi made a bold statement on the India-Pakistan cricketing rivalry ahead of the much-awaited meeting between the arch-rivals in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022. India and Pakistan will resume their rivalry in the showpiece event which gets underway in Australia later this month.

Speaking ahead of their game, Afridi said Babar Azam & Co. have managed to bring back some sort of rivalry between India and Pakistan which was lost in the past. Lauding former India captain MS Dhoni, Afridi, who has himself been part of numerous famous India-Pakistan matches, said Dhoni finished the hype surrounding the rivalry between the two teams by winning regularly.

Star batter Suryakumar Yadav also enjoyed his first net session and revealed he had butterflies ahead of his first net session Down Under.

"I was really looking forward to come here and attend the first practice session, go on the ground, have a walk and run, and feel how it is like here. The first net session was also amazing. Just wanted to feel how the pace of the wicket is, how the bounce is," said Suryakumar in a video shared by the BCCI.

"Obviously, starting a little slow. There were butterflies and there was excitement, at the same time, you also need to see how you bring yourself into this atmosphere. I am excited but at the same time, it is important to follow your routines," he added.

Former Indian cricket team captain Kapil Dev came up with a blunt response when asked about how players should deal with the extensive pressure in modern-day cricket. The 1983 World Cup-winning captain said those who feel too much pressure when playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) should not play in the competition.

The legendary all-rounder is regarded as one of the greatest of all time. He inspired a generation of cricketers by leading India to a memorable maiden World Cup triumph in 1983 and has since been a role model for many. Kapil said he often comes across the word 'pressure' when hearing debates around cricket on TV and has just one piece of advice for the players.

"I hear a lot of times on TV that there's a lot of pressure on players to play in the IPL. Then I only say one thing, don't play," said Kapil.

The former India captain went on to make a big statement as he said he can't understand 'American terms' like pressure and depression. Kapil believes if a player has passion for the game, he or she should never feel the pressure of performing on the field.

"If a player has passion, there will be no pressure. I can't understand these American terms, like pressure, depression. I'm a farmer and we play because we enjoy the game, and there can't be any pressure while enjoying the game," said the World Cup-winning captain.

However, his comments are sure to leave many divided as several cricketers in the recent past have come out in the open to talk about their mental struggles and depression. Team India's star batter Virat Kohli too had admitted to struggling to deal with the pressure during his rough phase recently.

Don't play in IPL If you feel pressure: Kapil Dev's blunt response on how to deal with pressure in cricket

South Africa all-rounder Keshav Maharaj has hailed Team India's incredible talent pool and refuted the claims that the Proteas are currently playing against a second-string Indian in the ongoing ODI series. India are currently locking horns with South Africa in a three-match ODI series at home with the team being led by Shikhar Dhawan in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma.

South Africa made a winning start to the series after clinching the first game by 9 runs to go 1-0 up. The Indian team is without all of their T20 World Cup-bound players, including the likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul among others. Meanwhile, India are also missing the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah who are out with injuries.

However, the Indian team is still full of quality showcasing the incredible depth of India's talent pool. There are likes of Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, Kuldeep Yadav, Avesh Khan and Mohammed Siraj among others who are part of India's ODI squad against South Africa making them a formidable unit despite missing a host of first-choice players.

They can field 4-5 international teams: South Africa's Keshav Maharaj hails India's extraordinary talent pool

Shafali Verma once again showed her match-winning prowess with an attractive 55 off 44 balls as India out-batted Bangladesh by 59 runs to win their fourth match and clinch a semi-final spot in the Women's Asia Cup T20 here on Saturday.

After an indifferent batting show in the defeat against Pakistan, the 'Women In Blue' put up a much-improved performance scoring 159 for 5, largely due to a 96-run opening stand between Shafali and stand-in skipper Smriti Mandhana (47 off 38 balls).

Credit should also go to Jemimah Rodrigues, whose 35 not out off just 24 balls helped the Indian team score nearly 160. Bangladesh managed 100 for 7 at the end of 20 overs and never looked like being in the hunt for a victory.

With 8 points from five games, India are on top of the seven-team table with a match left in the round-robin stage.
Having never chased a total beyond 142 in their entire T20I history, Bangladesh did try their bit but could never force the momentum against a solid Indian bowling attack which kept things tight.

After a shoddy fielding effort against Pakistan, it improved by a couple of notches on the day as there were no easy runs in store. The hosts couldn't even score 50 in the first 10 overs and scoring more than 110 runs in the back-10 was virtually impossible for them.

None of the Indian bowlers were off target for the better part with Sneh Rana (1/17 in 3 overs) and Deepti Sharma (2/13 in 4 overs) being parsimonious as ever. Even Shafali's loopy leg-breaks (2/10 in 4 overs) seemed unplayable.

The slowness of the track also meant that spinners could vary the pace and most of the balls were not coming onto the bat. The two openers Fargana Hoqie (30 off 40 balls) and Murshida Khatun (21 off 25 balls) could add only 45 in the first nine overs and Bangladesh actually were thrown out of the contest at that stage.

Earlier, Shafali showed why she is one of the most destructive batters in this format as she struck five fours and two huge sixes. En route her fourth half-century in T20Is, Shafali also completed 1000 runs in the format.

With the elegant skipper Mandhana for company, the duo added 96 in just 12 overs. Mandhana as usual peppered the field with six crisp boundaries.

Once both Mandhana and Shafali, who tried a reverse slog, were dismissed, Bangladesh could briefly put brakes on scoring but the in-form Jemimah used her cricketing smarts to find the gaps as she and Deepti Sharma added 29 in just 2.3 overs to set a challenging target.

The Indian cricket team has landed in Australia to begin their preparations ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022. India will be conducting their training camp in Perth before playing a couple of warm-up matches to get ready for the World Cup that gets underway on October 16.

The Indian team left for Australia on Friday and had their first training session in Perth on Saturday (October 08). It was a light session where the players were monitored by India's strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai. In a video shared by the BCCI, Desai spoke about India's preparations and explained why they chose to train in Perth.

Desai said the reason behind choosing to conduct the camp in Perth was pretty simple as the team management wanted the players to get used to the pitches having played a number of matches in home conditions recently. It will be useful for the Indian batters as pace and bounce are common on Australian tracks.

"The upcoming 8-10 days are going to be very crucial for us, leading into the World Cup. We can't thank the team management and the BCCI enough for getting us these 8 days because, we always feel we are thrust into the big tournaments, playing so much cricket as the Indian team. But these 8 days, we are going to gradually build ourselves both physically and on the skills front, to lead us nicely into the first game in the World Cup," Desai said in a video shared by BCCI.

"The goal in Perth specifically is to get some time on these pitches as well as to break the monotony of playing the bilateral series, back to back in India," he added when asked why India chose to train in Perth specifically.

Why India chose to train in Perth ahead of T20 World Cup 2022? Strength and conditioning coach explains

Rohit Sharma-led Team India have already touched down in Australia ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 that gets underway later this month. India have travelled to the country with only 14 players as Jasprit Bumrah's replacement is yet to be officially confirmed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Bumrah has been ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2022 due to a back injury. The fast bowler's absence from the tournament is a huge blow to the team's chances and it will be a herculean task to find an ideal replacement for him. The BCCI had the option to quickly announce Bumrah's replacement to ensure the player travelled to Australia with the rest of the team, however, the selectors wanted to take their time.

As per a report in PTI, the selectors have now zeroed in on the experienced Mohammed Shami as an ideal replacement for Bumrah in the T20 World Cup squad. Shami will travel to Australia next week to link up with the rest of his teammates.

Shami had earlier been named in the reserves when India announced their squad for the T20 World Cup despite having not played a single T20I for India since the T20 World Cup last year. He was set to feature in the T20I series against Australia and South Africa at home after being recalled to the T20I squad.

However, Shami ended up missing both series due to COVID-19. He has resumed bowling in the nets but is currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to undergo mandatory fitness tests before he can travel to Australia for the T20 World Cup.

"Mohammed Shami, if fit, was always going to be the first replacement as that's the closest Indian team can get in terms of sheer quality. He will be joining some time next week," a source was quoted as saying by PTI.

Despite not being in the scheme of things for India in T20Is for a while now, Shami is believed to be the selectors' favourite when it comes to a like-to-like replacement for Bumrah as a strike bowler. Mohammed Shami to replace Jasprit Bumrah in India's T20 WC squad, to travel to Australia next week - Report

West Indies cricketer John Campbell has been banned for four years for violating an anti-doping rule. The decision was taken by the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO), as per Reuters. A three-member independent panel announced the decision on Friday.

The West Indies batter has been charged for evading, refusing or failing to submit to sample collection. The decision comes after JADCO had alleged Cambell refused to provide his blood sample at his home in Kingston in April earlier this year.

The independent panel announced an 18-page decision on Friday while charging the West Indies batter. The panel noted that Campbell breached rule 2.3 of JADCO. The panel observed that it was satisfied that the anti-doping violation by the West Indies batter was an intentional one and that he should be banned for four years.

"The panel is persuaded to a comfortable degree of satisfaction that the athlete committed an anti-doping rule violation, namely breach of JADCO rule 2.3," the decision read.

"The panel does not find, on the evidence presented, that the athlete's anti-doping violation was not intentional. In the circumstances of this case, the athlete is ineligible for a period of four years," it added.

29-year-old Campbell, who earned comparisons with the legendary Chris Gayle during the initial days of his international career, made his debut for West Indies in 2019. He has so far played 20 Tests, six ODIs and 2 T20Is for West Indies, with 888, 248 and 11 runs in the three formats, respectively.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ramiz Raja claims the Indian cricket team has started taking Pakistan more seriously and have been givingthem more respect after the recent results in the meetings between the two teams. Pakistan had defeated India by 10 wickets in the high-profile clash between the arch-rivals at the T20 World Cup last year.

Pakistan, who had never won a World Cup against India in the history, managed to beat the Men in Blue by ten wickets to bring an end to a long wait. Babar Azam & Co. played some fantastic cricket throughout the tournament but failed to make it to the final of the T20 World Cup in the UAE.

India and Pakistan met twice in the Asia Cup earlier this year where both the teams managed to win a game each. While it was a disappointing early exit from the tournament for India, Pakistan ended up making the final where they went down fighting against Sri Lanka.

Lauding the Babar Azam-led side for defeating a 'billion-dollar team' like India with lesser resources than their arch-rivals, PCB chief Raja said Pakistan deserve credit for the way they have played their cricket recently.

On Thursday (October 06), Thailand pulled off a huge upset win over Pakistan beating them by four wickets in a low-scoring thriller in the ongoing Women's Asia Cup, in Bangladesh. Opting to bat first, the Bismah Mahroof-led Women in Green only managed a paltry 116 for 5 in their full quota of overs. Sidra Ameen, their opening batter, was the top run-getter as she scored 56 but her stay comprised of 64 deliveries, at a slow strike rate of 87.50.

None of the Pakistani batters found momentum to go big from the word go and paid the price to only manage 116. In reply, Thailand batters also found it tough to get going as the surface proved to be a challenge but Natthakan Chantham's 51-ball 61 led her side to a four-wicket win on the penultimate ball of the contest. Nida Dar and Tuba Hassan accounted for two scalps each but couldn't prevent the opposition from hitting the winning runs.

With this win, Thailand have thrown the top-4 race wide open. It is not straight forward as it was previously. In the points table, Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian eves still hold the top spot, with Pakistan's two-match winning run coming to an end. Pakistan and Sri Lanka follow suit, with four points each, with Bangladesh, Thailand and UAE taking the next slots, respectively. Malaysia remain the only winless side so far.

What they said at the post-match presentation

Natthakan Chantham | Player-of-the-Match: Looking to enjoy the game, play with the target in hand and just complete the game. Play according to the ball was my plan. Pakistan made me work hard as they are very good with spin.

Naruemol Chaiwai | Thailand captain: [Enjoyed] Very much. Pakistan are a strong side, we want to win against every team, at this moment we want to enjoy and the win will come automatically. No specific plan, the same plan everyday. The last two games we did not bowl the correct line or length, but today we did it.

Bismah Maroof | Pakistan captain: Disappointed with the way we batted. Our batters haven't showed the intent. They have to be blamed today. The set batters were there but they could not push on. 130+ could've been a good total and as a captain I'm disappointed we did not get there. We had Kainat but she could not execute her plans [on just playing with one pacer].

While Rohit Sharma-led India's T20 World Cup team left for Australia, Shikhar Dhawan's second-string ODI side faced South Africa in the three-match ODI series opener on Thursday (October 7) in Lucknow. In a rain-curtailed ODI, Temba Bavuma's SA were asked to bat first. Quinton de Kock managed a promising 54-ball 48 but the Proteas were reduced to 110/4 before unbeaten fifties from Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller saw them post a competitive 249/4 in the 40-over contest.

In reply, India were on the back foot and reduced to 51-4 before a 37-ball 50 from Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson's unbeaten 86 took India close to the total, managing 240 for 8, losing by nine runs. After the clash, former South African speedster Dale Steyn admitted being nervous when Kagiso Rabada bowled a no-ball on the final ball of the penultimate over as he was aware of Samson's exploits.

"As soon as KG (Kagiso Rabada) bowled that no-ball in the last ball of his over, I was like, 'please don't let this happen'. Because you never know with someone like Sanju, especially with the form that he has got and the belief that he has. I watched him in the IPL, his ability to take down the bowlers and hit boundaries at will, especially in the last two overs of the game, is incredible," Steyn said in the post-match discussion on Star Sports.

"Shamsi was going to bowl the last over and he (Samson) knew he (Shamsi) had a rough day. I was nervous when KG (Rabada) bowled the no ball. Because Sanju is the kind of guy who has the potential of Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), to hit those six sixes and get the team across the line when it needs 30+," Styen said.

Eventually, India needed a mammoth 30 runs off the last six deliveries of the match after Rabada conceded only seven runs in the 39th over. Samson went big, taking on Tabraiz Shamsi who ended with match figures of 8-0-89-1, and smacked 6,4,4,4 but Dhawan & Co. fell short by nine runs.

At the post-match presentation, Dhawan said, "Quite proud of the way the boys played the game, we didn't get a good start, the way Shreyas, Samson and Shardul batted was excellent. We gave away too many runs on a wicket that swung and spun, the fielding wasn't great, but this was a good learning experience for us."

On Monday evening (October 03), the BCCI announced that Jasprit Bumrah is officially ruled out of the T20 World Cup due to back stress fracture. Bumrah's injury woes started before the Asia Cup. The speedster missed the continental tournament, held in the UAE, and returned during the home T20Is versus Australia -- where he played two out of the three games.

After missing the three-match T20I series opener versus South Africa, which concluded on Tuesday (October 05), Bumrah was monited by the BCCI medical team before a final call was taken on his T20 WC chances. With him out of the scene for the forthcoming mega event, Rohit Sharma-led India have a herculean task to fill in for Bumrah and go all the distance in the upcoming edition in Australia.

Former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja, speaking on the Cricbuzz show, cited Waqar Younis' example and explained how India can still win the T20 WC title sans Bumrah. The 51-year-old pointed out that the Indian team should not have a problem without the pacer, as no role was assigned to him.

"You know, this is a really tough one to answer. But to make it simple and for fans, just to give them hope. One is that we didn't play with Jasprit Bumrah throughout this year. We played very few games with Jasprit Bumrah and India still managed to do well," Jadeja said.

Jadeja further opined, "So there is no role play that got assigned to him. So, luckily, from that point of view, you know the Indian team should not have that problem. You cannot replace Jasprit Bumrah, not even close, because he is so unique that you will miss him."

"Two, just to give you an assurance that you know people who are young and who've joined us, I'll give them a story from 30 years ago. There was another World Cup in Australia in 1992. The team that won that World Cup, not many people in India would like this. The team that won that World Cup had a similar thing happen to them. A man called Waqar Younis, in that period of time, was the finest bowler in that format or any format, and just like Jasprit Bumrah, he was that attacking a bowler. He missed out on that World Cup just before with a back injury, pretty similar to Jasprit Bumrah's, but at the end of the day, Pakistan happened to win that World Cup," he added.

ALSO READ | India, Australia, England or Pakistan? Aussie great picks his favourites for T20 World Cup Jadeja further opined, "So there is no role play that got assigned to him. So, luckily, from that point of view, you know the Indian team should not have that problem. You cannot replace Jasprit Bumrah, not even close, because he is so unique that you will miss him." "Two, just to give you an assurance that you know people who are young and who've joined us, I'll give them a story from 30 years ago.

The ongoing Legends League Cricket tournament has turned out to be a great success in India as fans have enjoyed watching their yesteryears heroes rewind the clock with their brilliant performances. The Legends League features only former cricketers, who are no more actively playing any competitive cricket for their respective countries.

The tournament features some of the greatest players of all time from across the globe, competing for their respective franchises. There have been some action-packed encounters which have kept the fans on their toes as several former stars have produced some vintage performances.

While the matches in the league have been entertaining so far, a controversy erupted during Qualifier 1 between Bhilwara Kings and India Capitals after former Australia pacer Mitchell Johnson got involved in an ugly spat with ex-India all-rounder Yusuf Pathan. While Pathan is representing the Kings, Johnson is playing for the Capitals in the tournament.

The duo had an ugly on-field spat and Johnson was seen pushing Pathan in a video which went viral on social media. While neither of them have opened up on their ugly spat, a report in Fox Sports Australia has claimed the ugly spat took place after Pathan 'sledged' one of the female umpires on the field.

"Johnson did nothing. [Pathan] was sledging the female umpires," an unnamed player, who wished not to reveal his identity, was quoted as saying by Fox Sports.

Team India received a major blow ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 after premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the tournament due to a back injury. The Men in Blue have done well in the shortest format under Rohit Sharma's captaincy since their disappointing exit at the T20 World Cup last year, however, Bumrah's absence has severely impacted India's chances of winning the trophy this year.

While BCCI is yet to name an official replacement for the fast bowler, the likes of Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Deepak Chahar and Umran Malik among others are reportedly in contention to replace Bumrah in India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 starting in Australia later this month.

Senior pacer Shami is one of the favourites considering his experience and skills. He was part of the reserves when selectors announced India's squad for the World Cup last month despite having not played in the shortest format of the Men in Blue since the T20 World Cup last year.

He was set to feature in the T20I series against Australia at home last month but had to miss out after testing positive for COVID-19 before missing the recently-concluded three-match T20I series against South Africa as he failed to recover in time.

Despite lack of game time, Shami is seen as one of the strongest contenders to take Bumrah's spot in India's squad as a strike bowler. India head coach Rahul Dravid said the team management will assess Shami's medical reports before taking a call on his inclusion in the team.

Dravid admitted it would have been ideal had Shami taken part in the recently-concluded T20I series against South Africa.

"He (Shami) in the NCA at the moment - we'll have to get reports as to how he's recovering, and what's his status after 14-15 days of Covid, and we'll take a call, once I get reports on how he's feeling, then we can take a call and the selectors can take a call on how we move forward on in," Dravid said in the post-match presser after India's 49-run defeat in 3rd T20I against South Africa on Tuesday.

"Shami obviously is someone who's in the standbys, but unfortunately for us, he couldn't play this series, which would have been ideal from that perspective," the India head coach added.

While Shami remains a strong contender to replace Bumrah, Chahar might also be considered for promotion from the reserves to the main squad for the T20 World Cup considering his recent form. The swing bowler has been impressive with the new ball and can also prove to be handy with the bat in the tail.

India have time till October 15 to finalise a replacement for Bumrah, who is one of the best fast bowlers in the world and is not easy to replace by any means. Indian team will leave for Australia this week to begin their preparations for the showpiece event.

England batter Jonny Bairstow has provided an update on his recovery after undergoing surgery following a freak injury he suffered earlier this year. Bairstow also went on to reveal the extent of his injury, which ended his hopes of playing in the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia this month.

The England batter had suffered a freak injury while playing golf which ruled him out of the T20 World Cup. He revealed he had a broken fibula in three places and also dislocated his ankle. Bairstow needed to undergo surgery and is currently on the path of recovery, three weeks since the operation.

"Hello everyoneI am just writing this to give you all an update on my injury and progress. The actual injury was as such a broken fibula in 3 places which required a plate, I dislocated my ankle which in turn meant I did my syndesmosis joint and lateral ligament along with a couple more bits. All in all I have done a proper job on it," Bairstow wrote in a post on Instagram while sharing pictures of his injured leg.

Ahead of the India-South Africa third and final T20I, at the iconic Holkar Stadium in Indore on Tuesday evening (October 04), a huge controversy broke out. The MP Cricket Association claimed that a team of IMC officials -- under Additional Commissioner Lata Agarwal -- raided their office in a bid to demand municipal taxes. The MPCA fees that the action was taken following their refusal to give away 'more' free passes for officials. On the other hand, the IMC has rubbished all such charges.

On Monday (October 03), a team of IMC officials arrived at the MPCA officials and accused the body of not paying the property tax for the stadium. To this, MPCA office bearers protested and pointed out that the last date is months away, i.e. March 31. While the officials confirmed that the payment will be made by then, they paid INR 3.2 million (INR 32 lakhs) to settle the matter ahead of the series finale between Team India and South Africa.

In addition, the IMC team demanded entertainment tax for previous matches. It is to be noted that the tax liability of those encounters is not the MPCA's responsibility but on the organisers. The entertainment tax for Tuesday's T20I can only be paid after the match since the final ticket sale won't be known before that.

India vs SA, 3rd T20I: Indore Municipal Corporation raids MP Cricket Association ahead of final encounter

Australia legend Shane Watson had recently said there is no like-to-like replacement for Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah in the world, let alone India. Bumrah is reportedly in doubt to feature in the T20 World Cup starting later this month owing to a back injury.

He was recently ruled out of India's ongoing T20I series against South Africa at home due to a back stress fracture. Bumrah faces a race against time to be fit for the T20 World Cup and is likely to miss the bus for Australia. India already have the likes of Mohammed Shami and Deepak Chahar on their standby list for the World Cup, but Watson has backed Mohammed Siraj to replace Bumrah.

Siraj was recalled to India's T20I squad for the ongoing series against the Proteas as a replacement for injured Bumrah. However, he is yet to play a game in the series. Watson believes Siraj's aggressive bowling, pace and skills can be crucial for India on Australian pitches during the T20 World Cup.

"The player I would put in if Jasprit’s not available is Mohammad Siraj, because of the firepower he presents," Watson said on the ICC Review.

"Without Bumrah, that’s the one thing India won’t necessarily have, which is vital on Australian wickets on the bigger grounds with the pace and bounce.

"Siraj is great with the brand new ball. He is fast, he swings the ball away but also his defensive skills are pretty good. And he’s got better over the last couple of years, with what we’ve seen in the IPL. So, for me he’s probably going to be the one who is going to have the most impact," he added.

Siraj has been a vital cog in the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) pace attack over the years but had a disappointing campaign in the 2022 season where he managed only nine wickets in 15 matches. He has five wickets to his name in five T20Is for India and is yet to prove his mettle in the shortest format for the Men in Blue.

However, Watson insisted not having Bumrah in the squad will severely impact India's chances of winning the T20 World Cup 2022 title as Bumrah is one of the best pacers in the world at present.

"Honestly, I think it’s going to have a huge impact on India’s chances of winning the T20 World Cup," Watson said.

"He is one of the best bowlers in the world and India in particular, with their fast bowlers, he is the main guy who can take wickets with the brand new ball but also is an incredible defensive bowler at the back end of the game. So if Jasprit’s not available to play in this T20 World Cup, then India’s chances drop quite a bit," he added.

Australia legend Shane Watson names Jasprit Bumrah's replacement if Indian pacer is ruled out of T20 WC

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday confirmed fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022. The tournament is all set to get underway in Australia later this month and Bumrah was facing a race against time to be fully fit after sustaining a back injury.

Bumrah had earlier been ruled out of India's ongoing T20I series against South Africa at home due to a back stress fracture, with Mohammed Siraj replacing him in the squad. While there were reports he is all but out of the tournament, India head coach Rahul Dravid and the team management still had hopes of having the pacer board the flight to Australia.

His absence is set to be a huge blow for the Indian team as Bumrah is arguably one of the best fast bowlers in the world at present and has been a prolific wicket-taker for India in the shortest format. He has also been exceptional with both the new ball and the old one in the death overs.

"The BCCI Medical team has ruled out Team India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad. The decision was taken following a detailed assessment and in consultation with the specialists," BCCI said in a statement, confirming Bumrah's ouster from the tournament.

Bumrah has been dealing with back issues for a long time now and suffered a back stress fracture in 2019 as well. The fast bowler also missed the Asia Cup 2022 following a back niggle he sustained during India's tour of England earlier this year.

He had spent a long time on the sidelines and undergone recovery at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Bumrah made his comeback for India in the T20I series against Australia last month but played only two matches against the Aussies, managing just a single wicket.

As per a report in the Times of India, Shami is seen as a strike bowler and a like-to-like back-up for Bumrah. Mohammed Siraj, who replaced Bumrah in India's squad for the South Africa T20Is, is likely to be in the standbys for the T20 World Cup 2022.

Bumrah's absence is set to be a huge blow for the Indian team's chances at the T20 World Cup in Australia. One of the best fast bowlers in the world at present, Bumrah was India's finest strike bowler, who has been equally good with the new ball and in the death overs, over the years.

While BCCI is yet to name an official replacement for the injured pacer, the likes of Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Umran Malik among others are reportedly in contention to replace him in India's T20 World Cup 2022 squad.

Team India all-rounder Hardik Pandya sent a heartfelt message to his teammate Jasprit Bumrah after the fast bowler was ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2022 due to a back injury.

Team India all-rounder Hardik Pandya sent a heartfelt message to his teammate Jasprit Bumrah after the fast bowler was ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2022 due to a back injury. BCCI on Monday confirmed Bumrah will not feature in the T20 World Cup starting in Australia later this month following an assessment of the pacer's injury by the board's medical team. Bumrah, who has been dealing with back issues for a long time now, had missed the Asia Cup earlier this year owing to a back injury. He made his return in the T20I series against Australia last month and played only two games before his injury resurfaced. Bumrah suffered a back stress fracture which ruled him out of India's ongoing T20I series against South Africa as he was replaced by Mohammed Siraj. While there were hopes he could recover in time for the T20 World Cup, BCCI confirmed his ouster to bring an end to speculations surrounding his participation in the tournament. "I am gutted that I won’t be a part of the T20 World Cup this time, but thankful for the wishes, care and support I’ve received from my loved ones. As I recover, I’ll be cheering on the team through their campaign in Australia," he wrote on social media. Opener Sabbhineni Meghana (69) batted with authority to record her maiden T20I half-century as India defeated Malaysia by 30 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis method in the rain-curtailed Asia Cup match here on Monday.

Replacing vice-captain Smriti Mandhana at the top, Meghana hit a career-best 69 off 53 deliveries to help India post 181 for 4. In reply, Malaysia were tottering at 16/2 in 5.2 overs when rain stopped play, far behind the 46-run mark which was the D/L par score when the match was called off.

With the win, India moved to the second spot on the points table -- with four points -- behind Pakistan. Meghana took the Malaysian bowling attack to the sword as she brought up her career-best score in the format after India were asked to bat.

The big-hitting Shafali Verma, who is struggling for form, also pitched in but the teenager looked scratchy for the most part of her 46-run knock.

Meghana made most of the opportunity provided to her as she donned the role of the aggressor from the very first ball. She milked boundaries every over, hitting the ball all across the ground in the powerplay as India fetched 47/0 in the first six overs.

She was dropped on 14 by skipper Winifred Duraisingam (2/36) in the third over and the right-hander made the Malaysians pay for the error as she raced to fifty with a boundary.

Poor fielding only added to Malaysia's woes as the Indian women looked on course for a 200-plus score. However, Duraisingam got the big wicket of Meghana. The Indian looked to drive only to chip the ball straight into the hands of extra cover, sending the entire Malaysian team into a frenzy.

Shafali, who had played the second fiddle to perfection, smashed a couple of sixes but failed to carry on the momentum once Meghana was out.

Richa Ghosh was elevated to the number three spot and the young wicketkeeper played a fluent 33-run knock, finding the gaps beautifully. But Shafali struggled to accelerate as Malaysia tightened their bowling and fielding while also triggering a mini-batting collapse.

In the eventful penultimate over, Shafali was bowled by 17-year-old Nur Dania Syuhada (2/9) off the first delivery before the spinner got rid of Kiran Navgire (0) in the next ball.

It would have been a three-wicket haul for the teenager had Richa not been dropped at deep mid-wicket on 31.
Defending 181, spinners Deepti Sharma (1/10) and Rajeshwari Gayakwad (1/6) got rid of openers Winifred Duraisingam (0) and Wan Julia (1) before rain stopped play.
