As a captain and player, who has always cared for CSK, he must have taken the decision in the best interest of CSK,” Viswanathan added.

Will MS Dhoni announce retirement after IPL 2022? CSK CEO answers the big question

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season kicks off on Saturday with last year’s finalists Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders facing each other. This year, the competition in the tournament has gone up a notch as two new teams joined the fray and a number of franchises have done quite well in the auctions.

However, former Indian cricket team skipper Sunil Gavaskar has identified one franchise who he thinks will find it difficult to win the tournament this year.

"Punjab Kings is one of those teams that have not managed to win the IPL. This time, I don't think they have an impact player in their squad but this can benefit the team as well. When there are very low expectations, there is very less pressure and when the pressure is less, the players are freer in their approach," Gavaskar told Sports Tak.

"In that aspect, I think Punjab Kings can surprise a few. Will they win the trophy? I doubt that. See, this is a T20 format and you have to be in that consistent cycle of winning," he added.

IPL 2022: Sunil Gavaskar identifies one team unlikely to win title this year

MS Dhoni has a knack for making some big calls out of nowhere. Just two days prior to the start of the IPL 2022 edition, Dhoni stepped down as the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain and has passed on the captaincy baton to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

Jadeja, who has been a part of the CSK setup since 2012, has some big shoes to fill, however, he will have the presence of Dhoni on the field. Hence, the transition process is expected to be a smooth affair for the Yellow Army as CSK prepare to defend their title in IPL 2022, where they play the season-opener versus last year's runners-up Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Ahead of the 15th season's commencement, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan spilled the beans on Dhoni handing over captaincy duties to Jadeja.

"MS Dhoni was thinking about it," Viswanathan was quoted as saying by the ESPNCricinfo. "He felt it is the right time to hand over the captaincy to Jaddu. He feels Jaddu is also in the prime form of his career and it is the ideal time for him lead CSK. What will be good for the franchise must be in the back of his mind."

“He [Jadeja] has been talked to earlier. Even last year, there was a proposal. We knew he would be the best person to succeed MS,” he added.

He further explained, “It is similar to when he (Dhoni) handed Virat the captaincy (of India) after having groomed him for a few years at international level. Similarly, he wanted the transition to be smooth (in CSK)."

"Jaddu has the potential to do well for the franchise. He is a good all-round cricketer, playing his best, he can get the team around. And MS' guidance will always be there. This will be a good induction programme," said a confident CSK CEO.

“At No. 3, if you don’t have Moeen Ali, then Robin Uthappa. Once Moeen Ali comes, you will have to once again think about your overseas contingent, which way you want to go. After that, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja and then Shivam Dube, MS Dhoni at No. 7,” Chopra said in the video.

In the middle order, Chopra went with Shivam Dube who was bought for big money by CSK in the auction and also included surprise pick Rajvardhan Hangargekar in his playing XI for the opener.

We aren't prepared for this: Fans react as MS Dhoni drops a bomb, hands over CSK captaincy to Jadeja

MS Dhoni has been a huge name in world cricket. The Jharkhand-born cricketer entered the scene at the international level in late 2004. After his initial struggles, he made a name for himself as a power-hitter. He later moulded himself as a clever finisher, shrewd tactician, astute leader and led India to all three major ICC titles.

Apart from scoring 17,266 international runs, with 16 tons and 108 half-centuries, Dhoni also became an IPL legend; whose birth coincided with the keeper-batsman's gigantic rise in stature. From 2008 to 2021, the veteran player featured in every IPL season, leading a franchise on 13 editions, winning the elusive IPL trophy four times, ending as a part of the second-best side in a season on six occasions.

After handing over CSK captaincy baton to Ravindra Jadeja ahead of IPL 2022, here's reliving 5 top moments from MS Dhoni's career in the cash-rich T20 league:

1) Leading CSK to the 2008 season final: The first season gave a sneak peek of things to follow as the Yellow Army began to create its legacy under Dhoni. The then Indian captain took CSK to the inaugural season-finale, where they lost to Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 3 wickets. Dhoni shone with the bat, scoring 414 runs at 133.57 along with two half-centuries. He also led some big names such as Matthew Hayden, Muttiah Muralitharan, Stephen Fleming without any discomfort.

2) Dhoni & Co. become first to retain their title: Under Dhoni, CSK won their maiden IPL championship in the 2010 edition. The Yellow Army defeated Sachin Tendulkar-led Mumbai Indians (MI) by 22 runs at DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai.

While winning back-to-back games in T20s isn't a cakewalk by any means, CSK went a step ahead to win successive seasons. The Dhoni-led side not only won their maiden title but also defended the trophy in the following season, in 2011. CSK beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 58 runs in the final to achieve the massive record. Later, MI also completed a double in 2020.

3) A fairy-tale comeback in 2018: After serving a two-year suspension, due to the spot-fixing scandal, CSK returned to the cash-rich league in 2018. They made the most of their comeback season, with Dhoni leading them from the front -- as a leader, keeper and batsman -- to take them to their third title. CSK beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 8 wickets in Mumbai.

Dhoni ended the season with 455 runs (his second-best ever) at 75.83 with 3 half-centuries. He also accounted for 14 dismissals behind the stumps. He was certainly a man-on-a-mission; hungry for success and to once again take CSK back at the top.

4) Master Finisher: Dhoni has entertained fans for years with his keeping, captaincy decisions and thrilling finishes. The man who is an expert in keeping calm and thinking rationally in crunch situations has often stood tall with the bat while donning the finisher's role for CSK in IPL. Some of his top finishing moments came versus Punjab Kings (then known as Kings XI Punjab) in 2010 and 2016 editions, RCB in 2018, MI in 2014, DC in 2021, SRH in 2017.

5) The Man with THE PLAN: Dhoni has also mastered the art of bringing out the best from the resources available to him. From handling big guns such as Fleming, Hayden, etc. Dhoni also gave a new lease of life to cricketers such as R Ashwin, Suresh Raina, Ashish Nehra, Deepak Chahar, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo -- which boasted their respective international careers -- by helping them produce the goods in the yellow jersey.

Some of his astute captaincy decisions involve: changing the batting order in CSK's last league stage game versus PBKS in 2018, placing a straightish mid-off for Kieron Pollard in IPL 2010 final, promoting Rayudu up the order in 2018, making smart use of Ashwin and Chahar in powerplays and Bravo in the death overs.

Dhoni ended IPL 2021 without batting in the finale (with 4,746 runs and 165 dismissals). Given that he has stepped down as CSK captain just two days prior to IPL 2022's commencement, one can expect 'Thala' Dhoni to go all-out in the forthcoming season which might also be his last appearance in the cash-rich league.

MS Dhoni hands over CSK captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja ahead of IPL 2022

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been handed another huge blow ahead of the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as England all-rounder Moeen Ali is likely to miss the opening clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on March 26. Moeen is currently stranded in London due to a delay in his visa for India.

After losing star pace Deepak Chahar's services for at least a couple of weeks at the start of the season, CSK's troubles have intensified over Moeen's visa delay. Moeen was one of CSK's best players in their title-winning campaign last year and can contribute equally well with the bat and the ball.

Despite having applied for his visa quite some time ago and BCCI also intervening in the matter, Moeen is currently stranded in London waiting for his visa approval to catch a flight to India. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said the franchise had expected Moeen to land in India by Monday this week but there has been a delay due to the verification process.

"We were expecting Moeen to join us by Monday but because of the delay in issuing a visa, it is not clear when he will leave for Mumbai. He submitted the visa application on February 28, but because of the verification process, there has been a delay. Unless he enters the bubble by Wednesday noon, it won't be possible for him to play against Kolkata," CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

Moeen was roped in by CSK ahead of IPL 2021 last year and went on to revive the team's top-order with his brilliant performances at number three. Moeen notched up 357 runs and picked up six wickets in 15 games to help CSK win their fourth title after a win against Kolkata Knight Riders in the final.

His absence will leave a huge void in CSK's batting line-up and the spin attack. While New Zealand batter Devon Conway is likely to open the batting with Ruturaj Gaikwad in Moeen's absence, the other overseas slots can be taken by all-rounder Dwayne Bravo and fast bowlers Adam Milne, Chris Jordan.

Despite BCCI's intervention Moeen Ali stranded in UK due to visa delay, likely to miss CSK's opener vs KKR

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be without the services of two of their key players when they take the field against Kolkata Knight Riders in the opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Saturday (March 26). CSK will be missing Indian pacer Deepak Chahar and England all-rounder Moeen Ali for the game.

While Chahar is still recovering from his injury and is expected to miss at least a couple of weeks of action for CSK, Ali is yet to receive his visa for India and is currently stuck in London. Despite having applied for the visa a long time back, Ali is yet to receive approval and leave for India to join the rest of the CSK squad ahead of the new season.

If Ali manages to land in India today (March 23) only then will he be able to feature in the playing XI for CSK in their opening game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on March 26 (Saturday). All players are required to serve at least 3 days of isolation upon landing in their team hotel. Ali is thus likely to miss CSK's opener against Shreyas Iyer's men.

In the absence of Ali, CSK have a number of players on their roster who can take the England all-rounder's spot in the playing XI against KKR. Here is a look at three players who can take his spot in the side:

1) Mitchell Santner

New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner can be a like-to-like replacement for Moeen Ali in the CSK line-up. While Robin Uthappa can take Ali's no.3 spot in the top-order, Santner can be slotted in the middle-order. He has been with CSK for quite some time now and is a great utility player who can contribute with both the bat and the ball.

2) Shivam Dube

Indian all-rounder Shivam Dube can also take Moeen's spot in the playing XI which will allow CSK to play four quality overseas players in the form of Devon Conway, Dwayne Bravo, Chris Jordan and Adam Milne all together. CSK can also include Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana in place of Jordan.

Jordan can be CSK's fourth overseas player in the XI along with Conway, Bravo and Milne. Uthappa can bat at number three with Rayudu at 4 and Ravindra Jadeja at number five to allow Jordan to be included in the XI.

Moeen Ali likely to miss IPL 2022 opener: 3 CSK players who can replace England all-rounder against KKR

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni has not enjoyed the best of form in the past couple of seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The lack of cricket throughout the year has clearly been reflected in Dhoni's performances for CSK ever since his retirement from international cricket in August 2020.

Dhoni last played an international game for India during the 2019 ODI World Cup and has since played no competitive cricket apart from the IPL. The lack of competitive cricket has taken a severe toll on his performances in the league and his waning prowess with the willow has been quite evident.

As CSK gear up to defend their title this year with a slightly revamped batting line-up compared to their title-winning campaign last year, former India cricketer Reetinder Sodhi has urged Dhoni to bat up the order for his team. Sodhi believes Dhoni is no more the finisher he once was and needs to come up in the order for the Men in Yellow.

"MS Dhoni has to bat up the order because he is no longer the same finisher that he was known to be a few years back. If he takes his time, comes in the 10th or 11th over, he can hit the lusty blows later. MS Dhoni knows that he is the key to CSK's prospects," Sodhi said on India News.

Dhoni has massively struggled to score runs consistently in the IPL over the last two seasons. He could only manage 200 runs at an average of just 25 in the 2020 season before scoring 114 runs last season at an average of just 16.28. In IPL 2021, Dhoni was seen demoting himself in the batting order on a number of occasions to give the other batters a chance.

While Dhoni's return to some sort of form will act as a huge boost for CSK, Sodhi believes CSK's chances will also rely heavily on the kind of season star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has for the franchise. Jadeja is one of the most important members of the CSK squad and has been in brilliant form with the bat and ball recently.

"Ravindra Jadeja's form will be very important. The way he batted in the Mohali Test match, the way he is bowling, these are great signs for Chennai that if he picks form, he can take Chennai to the IPL final. Ravindra Jadeja, Dhoni - all these big players have to take a lot of responsibility," said Sodhi.

Ravindra Jadeja can be MS Dhoni's successor at CSK: Suresh Raina makes big claim before IPL 2022

Every youngster desires to play under MS Dhoni. The IPL is such a platform where a youngster, from any country, can get a chance to represent the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and better their skills and temparement by playing under the stalwart and former Indian captain.

Shivam Dube, who has earlier represented the likes of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), has shown his hitting prowess and can bowl few overs of medium pace. However, his IPL career hasn't been flourished as yet and, hence, he has had limited appearances for Team India (1 ODI, 13 T20Is). Thus, he will like to turn things around emphatically in the forthcoming IPL 2022 edition by playing under Dhoni's leadership.

Stephen Fleming explains reason behind Chennai Super Kings camp in Surat ahead of IPL 2022

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been handed a huge blow ahead of the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as there remain doubts over the fitness of Indian pacer Deepak Chahar. Chahar was CSK's most expensive pick at the mega auction last month as the five-time champions pent a whopping Rs 14 crore (INR 140 million) to ensure he was back with the Yellow Army.

However, Chahar is likely to miss the first couple of weeks of action for CSK in IPL 2022 due to an injury. He is yet to join CSK's ongoing training camp in Surat and there is no update on his progress. However, CSK are hopeful that the pacer can recover fully soon and join the rest of the squad for the upcoming season.

With Chahar likely to miss the first couple of weeks of action, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has picked a talented youngster who he feels can be an ideal replacement for the pacer in CSK's playing XI. Pathan hailed India U-19 star Rajvardhan Hangargekar as a fantastic talent and backed him to take Chahar's spot in the playing XI in the pacer's absence.

“Shardul Thakur isn't there as well so you need to make sure that you find a replacement. They have one guy who is young, is raw - Hangargekar. You know he is a fantastic young talent. If a young guy comes into other team I might be a bit more worried but they have MS Dhoni as their leader, their captain behind the stumps and that makes things a lot easier for the younger guys. So I feel they nearly found some sort of replacement,” Pathan said on Star Sports.

Hangargekar is a promising all-rounder, who can bowl at a good pace and is also a hard-hitting batter down the order. The youngster has already started training with his CSK teammates and is currently being mentored by captain Dhoni in the team's preparatory camp ahead of the new season.

While Pathan insisted it is not easy to replace someone like Chahar in the XI as the pacer is known for his exploits in the powerplay and can move the ball both ways to provide early breakthroughs to his side, he backed Hangargekar to have a breakthrough season with CSK.

“Obviously for Deepak Chahar, it is not easy to find the kind of bowler because the skills he brings to the table like swinging the ball around and getting early wickets. As soon as he gets fit he comes into the playing XI but till then they need to rely on Hangargekar. I think he will be the guy who will actually come with a lot of potential,” Pathan said.

'He is a fantastic talent': Irfan Pathan picks Deepak Chahar's replacement for MS Dhoni's CSK in IPL 2022

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming said the IPL 2022 mega auction went as per their plans for the four-time champions. MS Dhoni & Co. roped in a number of their former players back at the auction including the likes of Deepak Chahar, Dwayne Bravo, Ambati Rayudu and Robin Uthappa among others. CSK also bought a number of quality Indian youngsters, who are set to be groomed under Dhoni.

While Fleming admitted the franchise was sad about losing a couple of old players who they would have liked having back, the CSK head coach said the squad has a great mix of youth and experience. CSK had tried to get back both Faf du Plessis and Shardul Thakur but ended up missing out on their services at the mega auction.

"We are really happy it went according to plan. We lost a couple of players which we are a bit sad about but we have gained some real talent. We've got, this year, some good blend of experience and youth. So we're really excited about the way the auction went down," Fleming said speaking about CSK's auction in a video shared by the franchise.

CSK managed to rope in some quality overseas players at nominal prices at the mega auction in the form of the Kiwi trio of Mitchell Santner, Devon Conway and Adam Milne. While all-rounder Santner and fast bowler Milne were bought for Rs 1.9 crore (INR 19 million) each, Conway was a steal for CSK at Rs 1 crore (INR 10 million).

Speaking about the Kiwi trio, Fleming said CSK got them for cheap at the mega auction and that they are all quality players, who can impress for the team this season.

“Well, they came cheap so it was good. They are all very skilful players. Devon Conway has had a great couple of years internationally. Mitch has been a stalwart for us. And in Adam Milne, we have got a bit of pace. So all three of them have great credentials and a good skill set for us,” said the CSK head coach.

England all-rounder Moeen Ali's availability is uncertain for his side Chennai Super Kings (CSK)'s opening clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 due to a visa issue. CSK are scheduled to take on KKR in the opening game of the IPL 2022 season at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on March 26.

Moeen, who is an integral member of the CSK squad, is currently stuck in London as his visa to India has not been approved yet. The England star is waiting for his visa to get processed to leave for India and join CSK's camp ahead of the start of the new season.

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said the franchise or the player has no idea why his visa has been delayed but expressed confidence that the matter will be sorted out soon. Viswanathan said Moeen will be on the next flight to India as soon as his visa is cleared.

The MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will play the IPL 2022 season-opener versus Shreyas Iyer's Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on March 26 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Ahead of the season, CSK had been dealt with a big blow when their most-expensive signing Deepak Chahar got injured during the India-West Indies T20Is at home in late February.

Chahar also missed out on the India-Sri Lanka T20Is and was expected to be out of action for the majority of the upcoming IPL season, to be held in India. Nonetheless, there is a big sigh of relief for the CSK franchise and their ardent fans as Chahar is likely to be available from mid-April.

For the unversed, Chahar is currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), in Bengaluru, for his 8-week long rehab. The Dhoni-led Chennai team isn't rushing the pacer into action and are closely monitoring his progress.

Faf Du Plessis recalled his initial days at his former side Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after he was on Saturday appointed as the new captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Du Plessis, who has never led an IPL team in the past, will be replacing Virat Kohli as RCB's new captain in IPL 2022.

Du Plessis might not have led an IPL team but is one of the most experienced cricketers in the league and has won the title twice as a player with CSK. He has also led South Africa in the past and has significant experience as a leader in international cricket. Du Plessis spent nine seasons with CSK where he played under the legendary MS Dhoni.

Du Plessis admitted he has a quite similar captaincy style to Dhoni, who is known for his ability to stay calm under pressure. However, the former CSK batter said when he first arrived at the franchise he found Dhoni's style of leading the side complete opposite of what he had thought captaincy would look like.

“The crazy thing is, when I started over in Chennai, I had this idea of what captaincy looks like. And MS was the complete opposite of what I thought it would have looked like! Because my culture was South African, right? So I came to this environment and I was like, ‘this guy was completely different than I thought what it should be!’” Faf said in an interview for RCB.

Du Plessis, who played an instrumental role in CSK's fourth IPL title triumph last year with a staggering 633 runs in the season, said he has been privileged to have played under Dhoni and learnt from one of the best captains around. The former South Africa skipper said he would like to utilise his experience and learnings but not try to be like Dhoni or Kohli.

“What it taught me was that there were different styles, but it is important that you need to be (have) your own style. Because that’s the thing that always comes through when the pressure is on,” said the RCB captain.

“So, I can’t try to be Virat Kohli because I’m not Virat Kohli. I can’t try to be MS Dhoni. But there are things I’ve learned that helped me grow my leadership style and mature. So, I’m grateful for that journey,” he added.

MS Dhoni remains a big name in international cricket. Despite his retirement from the highest level, on August 15 2020, the 40-year-old remains an extremely popular for his overall contribution to Indian cricket. Dhoni signed off from international cricket, with 17,266 runs, 108 fifties, 16 centuries, 634 catches, 195 stumpings, 359 sixes and also leading India to all major ICC titles.

Dhoni became a household name soon after he broke into the scene at the highest level in 2004. In his early years, he was a fearless striker of the ball who also played some audacious and unorthodox shots from time to time. During the 2006 Champions Trophy, Dhoni made a vital 23-ball 28 in Rahul Dravid & Co.'s face-off versus Ricky Ponting's Australia, in Mohali, but made heads turn with a stunning reverse sweep off Nathan Bracken in India's final over.

With wickets tumbling and India aiming for over a 260-run score, Dhoni was on strike in the final over and targetted some big shots. While he fell on the last ball of the Indian innings, with the score 249-8, he played a eye-catching reverse sweep (or pulled off an AB de Villiers). Here's the video:

While it can be termed as an AB de Villiers-esque stroke in the current era, back then the South African had just announced his arrival in international circuit. He hadn't even scored an ODI century when Dhoni pulled off a miraculous stroke against Bracken.

Talking about the India-Aus face-off, Dravid-led side's 249/8 was not much of a challenge for the Aussies as the Men in Yellow chased down the score with six wickets and 26 balls to spare. Australia later faced West Indies in the summit clash and won the title without dropping much sweat in the finale (by 8 wickets).
