While many had expected Dhoni to continue leading CSK this year after being retained by the franchise for a sum of Rs 12 crore (INR 120 million) ahead of the IPL mega auction, Dhoni pulled off another surprise just before the start of the season.

Like several others who were roped in by CSK at the mega auction last month, New Zealand opener Devon Conway was also looking forward to playing under Dhoni's captaincy in IPL 2022 but was left surprised after the latter's decision. Conway recently opened up on his chat with Dhoni over his decision to leave captaincy.

Conway revealed he asked Dhoni if he was sure he would not want to lead the team for another season as he was keen to play under the leadership of the four-time IPL-winning captain. However, Dhoni told him he would not lead the side but will still be around to guide&nbsp;the players.

“I was wanting to play under the great MS as captain. I had a nice little conversation with him. Conway, who was roped in by CSK at his base price of Rs 1 crore (INR 10 million) at the mega auction, also opened up on his lunch meeting with CSK's new captain Jadeja and Dhoni. The Kiwi batter said the duo came across as normal grown guys to him who are down to earth despite achieving tremendous success in their respective careers.

“A couple of days ago I had lunch and sat in between MS and Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja). It was really cool just to get to know them better. They are just normal men, normal grown guys, just down to earth. No aura about them, easy to get along with and easy to talk to. So it’s been really good to interact with those two legends of Indian cricket," said Conway.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by six wickets in the opening game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Saturday to get off to a winning start in the tournament. KKR rode on impressive performances from Indian pacer Umesh Yadav and opener Ajinkya Rahane to outclass CSK at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

While spinners Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy bowled sensational spells to tighten the noose on the CSK batting line-up, Umesh was the pick of the bowlers as he got KKR off to a brilliants start with two quick wickets at the top. Umesh got rid of CSK openers Ruturaj Gaikwad (0) and Devon Conway (3) cheaply to derail the CSK batting line-up.

Umesh didn't have the best of starts to his spell as he bowled a no-ball on the first ball of the over before bowling a wide. However, he sent Gaikwad packing on the third delivery of the first over to draw the first blood for KKR. After Umesh dismissed Gaikwad on a duck, former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden praised him while commentating during the match.

However, one of Hayden's comments didn't go down well with the fans. While praising Umesh, Hayden referred to the Indian pacer's struggles in the IPL over the last couple of seasons and said - "Someone else’s trash has become KKR’s treasure”. Hayden was referring to the fact that Umesh had managed only two appearances in the last two seasons for his last team.

With his fifty, Dhoni brought an end to an almost three-year-long drought for a half-century in the IPL and achieved a unique record. The former CSK skipper became the oldest Indian player in the history of the tournament to score a half-century. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have witnessed a change in captaincy for the first time since the inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008 as MS Dhoni passed over the baton to star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja ahead of IPL 2022. Dhoni stepped down from captaincy earlier this week as Jadeja was handed over captaincy just a couple of days ahead of their opening game against Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday (March 26).

Many had expected Dhoni to continue leading the side this year having been retained by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction last month, however, the former CSK skipper once again sprung a surprise in his own style ahead of the season. However, the move was in the making for quite some time and Dhoni had discussed his decision to hand over the captaincy to Jadeja with CSK head coach Stephen Fleming last season.

After CSK's opening game of the ongoing IPL 2022 season against KKR on Saturday, Fleming opened up on the change in captaincy and revealed he spoke about it with Dhoni last year. Fleming also said Dhoni wanted to give Jadeja a clean slate as captain heading into the season so the timing of the decision was his own.

"We talked about it. It's been something MS and I talked about during the last season," Fleming said on Saturday.

"The timing was MS's call. I think it's been documented that he wanted to give Jadeja the clean slate going into the series so it was communicated with Mr. Srinivasan and conveyed to the team. We 100% respect that," added the CSK head coach.

Dhoni and Fleming enjoyed a great captain-coach relationship for CSK as they together took the franchise to greater heights. Fleming has been the head coach of the four-time champions since 2009 and together with Dhoni, he managed to formulate strategies and plans which have worked for the side over the years.

However, Fleming admitted the plans will now have to change a bit with Jadeja taking over captaincy and Dhoni no longer in charge of the team. He insisted having Dhoni still in the squad as a player and utilising his experience to groom Jadeja will be helpful for CSK.

"There's going to be a bit of a transition period as we develop the relationship with Jadeja and also have MS there so you don't just discard a player just because he doesn't have the captaincy tag. You develop the new captain and work with the experience we've got, and thankfully we've got quite a bit of that. It's a little bit of change, but we'll work through that nicely," said the CSK head coach.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes Ravindra Jadeja is more than capable of handling the responsibility of captaincy for his Indian Premier League (IPL) side Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The legendary MS Dhoni stepped down as CSK captain earlier this week to hand over the reins to Jadeja.

Dhoni led CSK in all twelve seasons right from the inception of the tournament in 2008. He was part of the Rising Pune Supergiants side for two years in 2016 and 2017 when CSK were banned from IPL. Dhoni remains one of the most successful captains in IPL history with nine finals and four titles to his name as captain.

"He has been an outstanding cricketer for India. No. 1 in the world rankings when it comes to being an all-rounder. I have seen him evolve over the last 5 years and, in particular, the last 3 years," said Shastri.

"The way he is focussed on his batting. The time he has spent at the nets, the self-belief he has brought into the game. Apart from being an outstanding fielder and doing the job with the ball, I think he is a livewire in the team. He is very energetic, he is very positive and I am most happy to see he is back from a knee injury," he added.

He recently recalled his first conversation with Dhoni, who was leading the now-defunct Pune franchise back then. Agoram revealed Dhoni told him in their first meeting that it was a pleasure to work with him but he would not like advice from the coach until he asked for it himself. Dhoni also told Agoram to conduct his strategy meetings with players and the other backroom staff but to not expect him in such meetings.

"When I had the opportunity to work with Mahendra Singh Dhoni for Pune Super Giants in IPL 2016, the first day we met he said, "Let's have a chat." We were in the Pune Stadium and he was about to put his pads on. He asked if he could get me a filter coffee. "Yes please," I replied. He called the guys there and gave a wink to get a filter coffee, and then continued chatting with me," Agoram wrote in his column for Cricbuzz.

"Look, I know you have a lot of experience in this field and that players like you, and the coach Stephen Fleming got you on board. It's a pleasure to work with you," Dhoni told Agoram.

"Give all the info and strategies to the coach and the players. Agoram went on to state that he was okay with all of Dhoni's conditions and was later stumped by the former CSK captain, who had ordered a masala chai and not a filter coffee for himself and the&nbsp;performance analyst coach. Dhoni later told&nbsp;Agoram&nbsp;that he was good at&nbsp;stumpings.

On Thursday afternoon (March 24), the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) announced that MS Dhoni has resigned as the franchise's captain, handing over the captaincy duties to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.&nbsp;

Ahead of the 15th season's commencement, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan spilled the beans on Dhoni handing over captaincy duties to Jadeja.

"MS Dhoni was thinking about it," Viswanathan was quoted as saying by the&nbsp;ESPNCricinfo. "He felt it is the right time to hand over the captaincy to Jaddu. He feels Jaddu is also in the prime form of his career and it is the ideal time for him lead CSK. What will be good for the franchise must be in the back of his mind."

“He [Jadeja] has been talked to earlier. Even last year, there was a proposal. We knew he would be the best person to succeed MS,” he added.
