Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden believes that Chennai Super Kings can retain the Indian Premier League (IPL) title despite losing their first game of the season against Kolkata Knight Riders.<o:p></o:p>

The Ravindra Jadeja-led side did not have much to show in their opening encounter as they slumped to a five-wicket loss after a rare batting collapse. MS Dhoni was the sole bright spot in the batting as he scored his first IPL half century in nearly three years. Dwayne Bravo led the fightback for CSK with three wickets but it was not enough as Ajinkya Rahane guided KKR to a well- deserved victory.

IPL 2022: Can Chennai Super Kings defend their title this year? Matthew Hayden has his say

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) went past Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a thrilling match 6 of the IPL 2022 edition on Wednesday evening (March 30), at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai. Chasing a paltry 129, RCB were made to work hard for their runs before Shahbaz Ahmed's 20-ball 27 and finishing knocks from Harshal Patel-Dinesh Karthik propelled the side home.

Being asked to bat first, KKR only managed 128 all-out in 18.5 overs as Wanindu Hasarange's 4 for&nbsp;20, Akash Deep's 3 for 45 and Harshal Patel's 2 for 11 did the trick for Bengaluru. In reply, RCB lost big guns such as skipper Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli early in the run-chase before Shahbaz's vital knock and DK-Harshal's boundaries took RCB to their maiden win of the season. After the game, Faf lavished huge praise on Karthik and compared his finishing skills to Chennai Super Kings (CSK)'s former skipper MS Dhoni.

The RCB skipper said at the post-match presentation, "The runs were never a problem. We just needed to have wickets in hand. DK is as close as it gets to MS Dhoni when it comes to being ice cool. I rely on other people for help. We have great people in the camp."

Du Plessis added, "Close small margins game are very important at the start. Small score, we just tried to be positive but very good bowling from their seamers. The ball swung a little more earlier but today there was seam and bounce. Two three days ago, it was 200 and today it was 130. We would like to be more convincing."

After two games, DK has been on a roll. IPL 2022: KL Rahul to make any changes? Lucknow Super Giants predicted XI against Chennai Super Kings

The cricketing action will continue to take place in IPL 2022 as match 7 of the 15th edition will see Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lock horns with the debutant team&nbsp;Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Thursday evening (March 31) at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai.&nbsp;

Both sides are coming to this encounter with a defeat in their respective season-openers. Talking about the defending champions CSK, the Ravindra Jadeja-led Men in Yellow were a pale shadow of themselves as they were brushed aside by KKR's clinical display in the opening game&nbsp;at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Being asked to bat first, CSK managed a paltry 131 for 5 riding on former skipper Dhoni's 50* (38) and Ravi Jadeja's uninspiring 28-ball 26. In reply, KKR closed the run-chase in the penultimate over as the Chennai bowlers did fairly well in not leaking runs at will. Nonetheless, they also didn't apply much pressure with&nbsp;wicket-taking deliveries at regular intervals.

On the other hand, the KL Rahul-led Lucknow franchise faced Hardik Pandya's Gujarat Titans (GT), at the same venue on Monday (March 28). In a hard-fought match, Lucknow fought well courtesy a late surge from their lower-order and some tight bowling, however, they came second as they lost by five wickets in defence of 159. Thus, both Chennai and Lucknow will be desperate to avoid two successive losses at the beginning of the new season.

CSK vs LSG, IPL 2022 prediction today: Who will win Chennai Super Kings vs Lucknow Super Giants match?

MS Dhoni rarely fails to surprise. His has been a story laced with glory but the Dhoni era is nearing its end as we witness the last of the man who has been one of the greatest to have played the game and has won almost everything there is to be in world cricket.

The man who is known for pulling off surprises with his bold yet calculated moves,&nbsp;managed to stump his fans yet again last week when he stepped down as the captain of his beloved Chennai Super Kings (CSK) just two days ahead of the start of the ongoing season of Indian Premier League (IPL).

Those who know Dhoni would be okay with his decision as he has always been able to take the toughest of calls with the utmost composure, irrespective of their dramatic impact. In 2014, he had retired from Tests after a game against Australia in Melbourne without creating any fuss. He was just 10 short of completing 100 Test matches for India but decided to walk away while handing over the baton to Virat Kohli.

In 2017, Dhoni relinquished India's white-ball captaincy as well for Kohli giving his successor enough time to build his own side for the next World Cup in two years' time. It was another decision&nbsp;that&nbsp;left many scratching their heads but Dhoni knew the timing was right for him to pass over the baton.

Dhoni's self-imposed exits have been crafted in his own style - dipped in secrecy and full of surprise. His pattern of announcing his exits continued in the year 2020 when he confirmed his retirement from international cricket with an emotional video on Instagram that gave a glimpse of his entire journey - the highs and lows with the Indian team.

His arrival for Team India in 2004 was the start of a new dawn in Indian cricket as Dhoni led the team to unprecedented success across all formats. He clinched the maiden T20 World Cup title, won India's first Test mace,&nbsp;followed it up with a glorious World Cup triumph in 2011 and shut his critics&nbsp;by leading a young side to a Champions Trophy title in 2013.

His story with the Indian team had come to an end but he was still there for Chennai Super Kings. Many believed with the burden of playing international cricket off his shoulder, Dhoni would set the IPL alight in 2020 but it was not the case as he struggled and so did his team. CSK finished outside the playoffs for the first time in their history and Dhoni's waning prowess was there for everyone to see.

<h3>Comeback of dreams</h3>

If scripting a fairytale comeback in 2018 by lifting their third IPL title post a two-year ban was not enough, Dhoni masterminded another one in 2021. CSK were down and out. Dhoni's men had been written off as the old legs in the squad were finding it difficult to keep up with the pace of the league.

But 2021 arrived and Dhoni the batter took a backseat for Dhoni the captain. The 39-year-old took his fans a trip down memory lane as he once again proved why he is one of the greatest leaders in the game. His shrewd brain combined with his unparalleled reading of the game and the ability to stay calm under pressure did wonders as CSK lifted their fourth title to complete a fairytale redemption.

A redemption that was for the ages and post which Dhoni was heard saying - "job done" after he handed over the trophy to his teammates for celebrations followed by fireworks lighting up the Dubai sky on the night of the IPL final. Not many had thought but they had seen the last of Dhoni as CSK's captain.

<h3>The final surprise</h3>

Just two days ahead of the start of IPL 2022, Dhoni sprung what can be his final surprise as a cricketer. It was announced that Dhoni will not be leading CSK anymore and has chosen Ravindra Jadeja to take his legacy forward at the franchise, which he nurtured over the years.

The story of Dhoni and CSK has been the story of the IPL. A team that had no icon player to kickstart their journey in the unheralded territory of IPL in 2008 found their hero in Dhoni. The love continued to blossom as Dhoni led the team to playoffs after playoffs. CSK played nine finals in just twelve seasons under the 'Thala' and won the IPL four times.

They also won the Champions League twice to be crowned as the best T20 team in the world. A prodigious youngster from Ranchi, who was handpicked to lead a Chennai team in the IPL went on to become a cult hero of the city. The respect and admiration Dhoni commands from Chennai fans is so much so that CSK is synonymous with his name.

But as all good things come to an end, Dhoni's journey as the captain of his beloved franchise has come to an end. But he will still be the undisputed leader no matter who leads the team out and wears the captain's armband for the Men in Yellow.

Dhoni remains indispensable for CSK but he has decided to pass the captaincy baton looking at the future and doing what he has always done as a cricketer - putting the team above himself. Dhoni knows he will still be there in Jadeja's initial years of captaincy and there is no better man&nbsp;to guide his successor from behind the stumps than himself.

While he will be there for Jadeja to help him in crunch situations and set up the field during crucial overs, Dhoni is unlikely to be in the all-rounder's ears all the time and will let him run the game.&nbsp; He will still be the go-to man for Jadeja but CSK will not anymore be Dhoni's team.

&nbsp;

MS Dhoni rarely fails to surprise. His has been a story laced with glory but the Dhoni era is nearing its end as we witness the last of the man who has been one of the greatest to have played the game and has won almost everything there is to be in world cricket.

He clinched the maiden T20 World Cup title, won India's first Test mace, followed it up with a glorious World Cup triumph in 2011 and shut his critics by leading a young side to a Champions Trophy title in 2013. Also Read: Reliving the magnanimous highs of MS Dhoni as CSK captain post his shocking resignation Comeback of dreams If scripting a fairytale comeback in 2018 by lifting their third IPL title post a two-year ban was not enough, Dhoni masterminded another one in 2021. × Also Read: MS Dhoni: A look at the veteran's captaincy record for Chennai Super Kings × The final surprise Just two days ahead of the start of IPL 2022, Dhoni sprung what can be his final surprise as a cricketer. Dhoni knows he will still be there in Jadeja's initial years of captaincy and there is no better man to guide his successor from behind the stumps than himself. While he will be there for Jadeja to help him in crunch situations and set up the field during crucial overs, Dhoni is unlikely to be in the all-rounder's ears all the time and will let him run the game. He will still be the go-to man for Jadeja but CSK will not anymore be Dhoni's team.

A new dawn at CSK as MS Dhoni springs a surprise for one final time

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener Devon Conway recently opened up on his chat with the legendary MS Dhoni after his decision to step down as the captain of the franchise. Dhoni announced his decision&nbsp;just a couple of days ahead of the start of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as he passed over the baton to star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

While many had expected Dhoni to continue leading CSK this year after being retained by the franchise for a sum of Rs 12 crore (INR 120 million) ahead of the IPL mega auction, Dhoni pulled off another surprise just before the start of the season.

Like several others who were roped in by CSK at the mega auction last month, New Zealand opener Devon Conway was also looking forward to playing under Dhoni's captaincy in IPL 2022 but was left surprised after the latter's decision. Conway recently opened up on his chat with Dhoni over his decision to leave captaincy.

Conway revealed he asked Dhoni if he was sure he would not want to lead the team for another season as he was keen to play under the leadership of the four-time IPL-winning captain. However, Dhoni told him he would not lead the side but will still be around to guide&nbsp;the players.

“I was wanting to play under the great MS as captain. I had a nice little conversation with him. I said, ‘you’re sure you don’t want to captain one more season so I can play under you as captain?’ But he said, ‘no, but I am always going to be around anyway'. It was really cool," said Conway in a video shared by CSK.

Conway, who was roped in by CSK at his base price of Rs 1 crore (INR 10 million) at the mega auction, also opened up on his lunch meeting with CSK's new captain Jadeja and Dhoni. The Kiwi batter said the duo came across as normal grown guys to him who are down to earth despite achieving tremendous success in their respective careers.

“A couple of days ago I had lunch and sat in between MS and Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja). It was really cool just to get to know them better. They are just normal men, normal grown guys, just down to earth. No aura about them, easy to get along with and easy to talk to. So it’s been really good to interact with those two legends of Indian cricket," said Conway.

'Far-reaching decision': Ex-Pakistan cricketer on MS Dhoni handing over CSK captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by six wickets in the opening game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Saturday to get off to a winning start in the tournament. KKR rode on impressive performances from Indian pacer Umesh Yadav and opener Ajinkya Rahane to outclass CSK at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

While spinners Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy bowled sensational spells to tighten the noose on the CSK batting line-up, Umesh was the pick of the bowlers as he got KKR off to a brilliants start with two quick wickets at the top. Umesh got rid of CSK openers Ruturaj Gaikwad (0) and Devon Conway (3) cheaply to derail the CSK batting line-up.

Umesh didn't have the best of starts to his spell as he bowled a no-ball on the first ball of the over before bowling a wide. However, he sent Gaikwad packing on the third delivery of the first over to draw the first blood for KKR. After Umesh dismissed Gaikwad on a duck, former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden praised him while commentating during the match.

However, one of Hayden's comments didn't go down well with the fans. While praising Umesh, Hayden referred to the Indian pacer's struggles in the IPL over the last couple of seasons and said - "Someone else’s trash has become KKR’s treasure”. Hayden was referring to the fact that Umesh had managed only two appearances in the last two seasons for his last team.

However, his comment irked many on Twitter, who criticised the former Australian cricketer for his 'below the belt' remarks. Check out some of the reactions:&nbsp;

KKR begin IPL 2022 campaign with six-wicket victory over CSK

MS Dhoni turned back the clock with a vintage performance against Kolkata Knight Riders in the opening game of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Saturday (March 26). Dhoni slammed a brilliant fifty to help Chennai Super Kings (CSK) stage a fightback against KKR and post a respectable total on the board at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Invited to bat first in the opening game, CSK got off to a woeful start as they lost openers Ruturaj Gaikwad (0) and Devon Conway (3) cheaply before Robin&nbsp;Uthappa (28) and Ambati Rayudu (15) were sent back in quick succession. Captain Ravindra Jadeja did manage to hold one end to arrest the collapse but failed to get going as he stayed unbeaten on 26 off 28 balls.

40-year-old Dhoni, playing his first game after giving up the captaincy, stepped up yet again for the defending champions as he scored 50 off 38 balls with the help of 7 fours and a solitary six. Dhoni started slow and struggled to middle the ball but managed to finish in his own style as he helped CSK post 131 runs on the board from 61/5 in 11 overs.

With his fifty, Dhoni brought an end to an almost three-year-long drought for a half-century in the IPL and achieved a unique record. The former CSK skipper became the oldest Indian player in the history of the tournament to score a half-century. He surpassed the record set by Rahul Dravid, who scored a fifty at the age of 40 years and 116 days in 2013.

Oldest Indian batter to score an IPL fifty:

40y 262d - MS Dhoni v KKR, 2022
40y 116d - Rahul Dravid v DC, 2013
39y 362d - Sachin Tendulkar v DC, 2013

Dhoni last scored a fifty in the IPL during the 2019 season when he played a sensational knock of 84 runs off just 48 balls against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Despite Dhoni's stunning knock, CSK had ended up on the losing side as they lost the game by just 1 run.

Talking about the IPL 2022 opener on Sunday, KKR defeated CSK by six wickets after comfortably chasing down the target of 132 runs with nine balls to spare. Opener Ajinkya Rahane scored 44 off 34 balls and top-scored for the Shreays Iyer-led side as they resgistered a commanding win against Jadeja-led CSK.

Talking about the IPL 2022 opener on Sunday, KKR defeated CSK by six wickets after comfortably chasing down the target of 132 runs with nine balls to spare. MS Dhoni scripts unique record with his brilliant fifty against Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2022 opener

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have witnessed a change in captaincy for the first time since the inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008 as MS Dhoni passed over the baton to star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja ahead of IPL 2022. Dhoni stepped down from captaincy earlier this week as Jadeja was handed over captaincy just a couple of days ahead of their opening game against Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday (March 26).

Many had expected Dhoni to continue leading the side this year having been retained by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction last month, however, the former CSK skipper once again sprung a surprise in his own style ahead of the season. However, the move was in the making for quite some time and Dhoni had discussed his decision to hand over the captaincy to Jadeja with CSK head coach Stephen Fleming last season.

After CSK's opening game of the ongoing IPL 2022 season against KKR on Saturday, Fleming opened up on the change in captaincy and revealed he spoke about it with Dhoni last year. Fleming also said Dhoni wanted to give Jadeja a clean slate as captain heading into the season so the timing of the decision was his own.

"We talked about it. It's been something MS and I talked about during the last season," Fleming said on Saturday.

"The timing was MS's call. I think it's been documented that he wanted to give Jadeja the clean slate going into the series so it was communicated with Mr. Srinivasan and conveyed to the team. We 100% respect that," added the CSK head coach.

Dhoni and Fleming enjoyed a great captain-coach relationship for CSK as they together took the franchise to greater heights. Fleming has been the head coach of the four-time champions since 2009 and together with Dhoni, he managed to formulate strategies and plans which have worked for the side over the years.

However, Fleming admitted the plans will now have to change a bit with Jadeja taking over captaincy and Dhoni no longer in charge of the team. He insisted having Dhoni still in the squad as a player and utilising his experience to groom Jadeja will be helpful for CSK.

"There's going to be a bit of a transition period as we develop the relationship with Jadeja and also have MS there so you don't just discard a player just because he doesn't have the captaincy tag. You develop the new captain and work with the experience we've got, and thankfully we've got quite a bit of that. It's a little bit of change, but we'll work through that nicely," said the CSK head coach.

CSK made a shaky start to their IPL 2022 campaign under new captain Jadeja as they suffered a six-wicket defeat against KKR in their opening game of the season. In what was a shambolic batting performance, CSK managed to post a low-key total of only 131 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai as KKR cruised to a comfortable win.

MS Dhoni has been the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper since the Indian Premier League (IPL) started way back in 2008. The veteran wicket-keeper batsman had a brilliant run as CSK captain and he guided the franchise to four IPL titles and two Champions League T20 titles during his time.<o:p></o:p>

However, this season will be different as all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja succeeded him as the CSK skipper after Dhoni decided to step down from the position ahead of the 2022 season.

IPL 2022: CSK's Ravindra Jadeja registers unique record in opener against KKR

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes Ravindra Jadeja is more than capable of handling the responsibility of captaincy for his Indian Premier League (IPL) side Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The legendary MS Dhoni stepped down as CSK captain earlier this week to hand over the reins to Jadeja.

Dhoni led CSK in all twelve seasons right from the inception of the tournament in 2008. He was part of the Rising Pune Supergiants side for two years in 2016 and 2017 when CSK were banned from IPL. Dhoni remains one of the most successful captains in IPL history with nine finals and four titles to his name as captain.

While many had expected Dhoni to continue leading CSK this year, Dhoni decided to hand over the reins to Jadeja looking at the future. Reacting to Jadeja's appointment as the new skipper of the side, Shastri said the added responsibility to do wonders for the Indian all-rounder.

"Jaddu, my friend, good luck. I am sure you are more than capable of handling the job as captain. I think he has got added responsibility and that will do him wonders," Shastri said on Star Sports.

"Get out there and enjoy yourself like you normally do and be a good captain. Good luck with the toss, start winning many," Shastri added.

Shastri, who worked closely with Jadeja during his stint as the head coach of the Indian team from 2017 to 2021, said he has seen the all-rounder evolve in the last three years. Apart from being a superb fielder and a brilliant spinner, Jadeja has massively improved as a batter and Shastri believes he will be the livewire for CSK.

"He has been an outstanding cricketer for India. No. 1 in the world rankings when it comes to being an all-rounder. I have seen him evolve over the last 5 years and, in particular, the last 3 years," said Shastri.

"The way he is focussed on his batting. The time he has spent at the nets, the self-belief he has brought into the game. Apart from being an outstanding fielder and doing the job with the ball, I think he is a livewire in the team. He is very energetic, he is very positive and I am most happy to see he is back from a knee injury," he added.

MS Dhoni vs Rohit Sharma: Former Australia cricketer picks the best ever IPL captain

MS Dhoni left the entire cricketing fraternity in shock as he announced his resignation as the captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) just days ahead of the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Dhoni handed over the reins to star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, bringing an end to a glorious tenure as the captain of the four-time champions.

Dhoni captained&nbsp;CSK in a total of twelve seasons and led to a staggering nine finals and four titles. CSK managed to qualify for the playoffs in eleven out of the twelve seasons under Dhoni's captaincy, missing out only once in 2020. Dhoni led CSK right from the inception of IPL in 2008 to 2021.

Dhoni was expected to continue leading CSK this season after having been retained by the franchise for a sum of Rs 12 crore (INR 120 million). However, he decided to step away to ensure he can be around and groom Jadeja as the new leader of the side going forward. Jadeja was CSK's first-choice retention for a sum of a whopping Rs 16 crore (INR 160 million).

Reacting to Dhoni handing over captaincy to Jadeja ahead of IPL 2022, former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) superstar AB de Villiers said he was not surprised by the move. De Villiers said it was the right time for Dhoni to step away having led the team to their fourth IPL title last season.

“I am not surprised by MS’ move. I am actually quite happy for him. Having carried that burden for so long, people might think that it is easy to be captain, but it really wears you down. You have sleepless nights sometimes, especially when you don’t have good seasons," De Villiers said on&nbsp;VUSports.

"But I think he stepped away at exactly the right time, having won the last IPL. The season before the last would have hurt him a lot. To come back and win the trophy and then say 'I’ll still play but someone else takes over and I’ll be there to support', it’s the perfect move.”

With no Faf du Plessis this year, New Zealand opener Devon&nbsp;Conway is expected to open the batting along with young star Ruturaj Gaikwad. The middle-order will see a number of familiar CSK faces in Ambati Rayudu and Robin Uthappa but the new addition will be the all-rounder Shivam Dube.

Dube was picked up in the auction for INR 4 crore and he is expected to bat at No. 5 ahead of veteran MS Dhoni and the all-rounder duo of skipper Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo.

Devon Conway to open with Ruturaj Gaikwad? CSK's predicted playing XI for IPL 2022 opener against KKR

MS Dhoni is one of the most successful captains in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He has a stellar record as captain for the Chennai Super Kings with four titles and a staggering nine finals in just twelve seasons. Dhoni will be embarking on his 13th season with the franchise and 15th overall when he takes the field in the upcoming IPL 2022.

Dhoni had played for Rising Pune Supergiant for a couple of seasons in 2016 and 2017 when CSK were banned from the IPL. While he captained the now-defunct Pune franchise in the 2016 season, Dhoni played under the captaincy of Steve Smith in the next season.

One of the few players to have been part of all 15 editions of the IPL so far, Dhoni is the most capped player in the history of the tournament. The upcoming IPL 2022 will be the first season where Dhoni will turn up for CSK as a player and not captain having handed over the reins to star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

During IPL 2016 when Dhoni was leading RPSG, the franchise had hired Prasanna Agoram as their performance analyst coach under head coach Stephen Fleming. Agoram, an experienced coach, had previously worked with several IPL teams and the South Africa national team as well.

He recently recalled his first conversation with Dhoni, who was leading the now-defunct Pune franchise back then. Agoram revealed Dhoni told him in their first meeting that it was a pleasure to work with him but he would not like advice from the coach until he asked for it himself. Dhoni also told Agoram to conduct his strategy meetings with players and the other backroom staff but to not expect him in such meetings.

"When I had the opportunity to work with Mahendra Singh Dhoni for Pune Super Giants in IPL 2016, the first day we met he said, "Let's have a chat." We were in the Pune Stadium and he was about to put his pads on. He asked if he could get me a filter coffee. "Yes please," I replied. He called the guys there and gave a wink to get a filter coffee, and then continued chatting with me," Agoram wrote in his column for Cricbuzz.

"Look, I know you have a lot of experience in this field and that players like you, and the coach Stephen Fleming got you on board. It's a pleasure to work with you," Dhoni told Agoram.

"Give all the info and strategies to the coach and the players. Get the strategy meetings done with the players along with the coach, but don't expect me to be there and also don't give me any advice until I ask you. But mark a copy on the email on all your communications with the coach and players," added the former CSK captain.

Agoram went on to state that he was okay with all of Dhoni's conditions and was later stumped by the former CSK captain, who had ordered a masala chai and not a filter coffee for himself and the&nbsp;performance analyst coach. Dhoni later told&nbsp;Agoram&nbsp;that he was good at&nbsp;stumpings.

"I said this was okay. Then finally the filter coffee arrived. I had a sip and it was a masala chai. Dhoni looked at me with a smile and said, "I am good at stumpings"," wrote Agoram.

The Pune franchise had a poor run under Dhoni in IPL 2016 as they managed to win only five out of their 14 matches to finish seventh. Dhoni was replaced by Smith as captain ahead of IPL 2017 where Pune managed to make it to the final and lost to Mumbai Indians by just 1 run.

Dhoni returned to CSK in 2018 and led them to a memorable triumph on their comeback. CSK once again managed to reach the final in IPL 2019 but suffered a close defeat by just a run to lose out on winning back to back trophies. CSK won their fourth IPL title under Dhoni last year which proved to be his last year as captain in the IPL.

It will mark a new dawn in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when Ravindra Jadeja and Shreyas Iyer lead their respective teams out in the opening game of IPL 2022 on Saturday (March 26). CSK, meanwhile have managed to retain their core squad from their title-winning campaign last year as they have managed to get back the likes of Ambati Rayudu, Deepak Chahar, Dwayne Bravo and Robin Uthappa among others. The team is always bigger than the individual and you've got to fit into a role which the team needs you and I think Punjab Kings are going to need me in the middle order role so that's where I am focused. I haven't even thought about anywhere else. The team is really important and I'm excited; hope I can finish off games while batting second or post a big total batting first," Livingstone told Sports Tak.<o:p></o:p>

Livingstone was the fourth costliest player in this year’s auction after Ishan Kishan (Mumbai Indians), Deepak Chahar (Chennai Super Kings) and Shreyas Iyer (Kolkata Knight Riders). However, the England international made it clear that he will not be intimidated by the massive price tag.

Under Dhoni, CSK won the championship on four occasions (in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021). In addition, they qualified for the playoffs on all seasons barring 2020 and ended as runners-up on five occasions. Given that Dhoni is on the last lap of his IPL career, speculations intensified regarding his possible retirement post IPL 2022 edition.

In this regard, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said as per Indian Express, “No, I don’t think (this is going to be his last season). He will carry on."

“We have always respected the decision of MS. He has been a pillar of strength for us. He will continue to be a pillar of strength and he will guide Jaddu (Jadeja) and the other members of the team. He is expecting a smooth transition from him to Jaddu and that’s why he has taken the decision. As a captain and player, who has always cared for CSK, he must have taken the decision in the best interest of CSK,” Viswanathan added.

Dhoni, thus, signed off as the IPL captain with most wins, only to have lead in more than 200 games and second-highest run-getter as skipper.

The man, the legacy: IPL shares heartfelt journey of MS Dhoni as CSK captain post sudden resignation

MS Dhoni has stepped down as the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain ahead of IPL 2022. The news came just two days prior to the forthcoming season's opening game, where the four-time winners and defending champions CSK will lock horns with last year's runners-up Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on March 26.

In CSK's official statement, it read, "MS Dhoni has decided to hand over the leadership of CSK &amp; picked Ravindra Jadeja to lead team. Jadeja, who has been an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings since 2012, will be the third player to lead CSK. Dhoni will continue to represent CSK this season and beyond."

After the sudden change of guard in the CSK camp, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra also reacted to the development and made a big claim on his IPL future.&nbsp;Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra pointed out, "MS Dhoni has declared that he is no longer the king and he will now only be a person in the kingdom who'll serve the king. But the reality is that he is the king and the captain. He is the king of CSK. It is almost confirmed now that he won't play next year."

"Earlier this year too, I'm sure he did not want the franchise to retain him as spending money on retaining him would not have made the team stronger, as he may not be there for next season. This is why he asked Jadeja to be the first retainee, as he might not stay if he is not given INR 16 crore," Chopra further stated.

Lavishing huge praise on Dhoni's personality, Chopra also claimed that the former CSK captain won't interfere in Jadeja's decision-making unless he is asked for a piece of advice or any assistance on the field.&nbsp;

In this regard, Chopra added, "When MS Dhoni is not the captain, he becomes non-intrusive. He will only talk when needed or when you go to him. He's is not someone who'll walk up to you and impose his opinions. He prefers to be on the sidelines until someone walks up to him for advice."
