Champions Trophy 2025 | 'Our campaign is as good as over': Pakistan captain Rizwan accepts fate

In the shimmering heart of Dubai, where desert meets dreams, Virat Kohli painted another masterpiece on the cricketing canvas. As stadium lights pierced the velvet night sky, a familiar tale of excellence unfolded, with India’s maestro unleashing his strokes against their eternal rivals.

Like a seasoned warrior returning to his favourite battleground, Kohli crafted India’s chase of Pakistan’s 241 with the precision of a Swiss timepiece. The target, set up by Saud Shakeel’s gritty 62 and Mohammad Rizwan’s crafty 46, proved insufficient against the might of India’s batting prowess, as they cement their semi-final spot while pushing Pakistan almost out of the tournament.

During the chase, Shaheen Shah Afridi delivered a sharp yorker to dismantle Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s stumps. The dismal brought the King to the crease, amidst the deafening cheers of ‘Kohli-Kohli’ from the stands.

At 36, when most cricketers contemplate twilight, Kohli blazed like a midday sun. His unbeaten 100 off 111 balls—his 51st ODI century—was a testament to his evergreen excellence. Between wickets, he moved with the grace of a gazelle and the determination of a desert storm, transforming ones into twos and twos into three, ever pushing the much younger batter at the other end to the limits.

The innings was vintage Kohli—woven with threads of technique and temperament. Each stroke spoke of decades of dedication, each run a tribute to his legendary fitness regime. Early in the innings, Kohli introduced a couple of his vintage cover drives. He struck the pacers but handled the spinners cautiously but in doing so he never took his foot of the pedal. As the chase progressed, the master craftsman carved through Pakistan’s bowling with surgical precision.

Drama peaked as victory approached. Would the team’s triumph coincide with Kohli’s personal milestone? In a moment of poetic justice, he danced down the track to smash a boundary off Khushdil, simultaneously reaching his century and clinching India’s win.

During his 111 balls innings, Kohli went past 14,000 ODI runs. Achieving the 14,000-run milestone in just 287 innings, Kohli eclipsed the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 350 innings. After the match, Navjot Singh Sidhu made the forecast that looking at the fitness of Kohli, he can easily play for another 2-3 years.

Another interesting fact is that with his match-winning knock Kohli has also become the first batsman to slam a century against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, World Cup and in the Champions Trophy.

Yet, amidst the triumph, Kohli’s sporting gesture towards Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed — a handshake acknowledging the spinner’s excellent spell — reminded all of cricket’s greater virtues. “My job was clear - to control the middle overs, not take risks against spinners and take on pacers. I was happy with the template, it’s how I play in ODIs. I have a decent understanding of my game. It’s about keeping the outside noise away, take care of my energy levels and thoughts. It’s easy for me to get pulled into expectations and frenzy around games like these. I kept telling myself I’ll give my 100% while fielding. It’s why I take pride in it. When you put your head down and go about your work, things work out,” Kohli said, while collecting the Person of The Match Award.

Tonight’s victory is yet another chapter in the ever-expanding legend of Virat Kohli, where age defied convention and class proved permanent. In the grand theatre of cricket, the king had once again claimed his throne.

However, it was yet another dismal performance from the Pakistan team as they showed little application of skill. After the match, skipper Mohammad Rizwan reflected, “When Saud and I were batting, we wanted to go deep. But our shot selection was bad and lost wickets, which is why we were kept to 240. Abrar gave us the wicket, but Kohli and Gill took the game far from us. We must improve our fielding. We made a lot of mistakes this match, they’ve repeated.”

See the post by BCCI here: 1⃣4⃣0⃣0⃣0⃣ ODI RUNS for Virat Kohli 🫡🫡 And what better way to get to that extraordinary milestone 🤌✨ Live ▶️ https://t.co/llR6bWyvZN#TeamIndia | #PAKvIND | #ChampionsTrophy | @imVkohli pic.twitter.com/JKg0fbhElj — BCCI (@BCCI) February 23, 2025 Kohli entered the blockbuster contest against Pakistan with questions over his form. He had endured a rough patch in recent months, struggling on the tour of Australia, where he managed just one fifty-plus score in five Tests. His performances in the home Test series and the ODI tour of Sri Lanka were also below his usual high standards. However, his milestone moment in the Champions Trophy is a strong statement of his form and class. Interestingly, the Indian batter was also the fastest to 8,000, 9,000, 10,000, 11,000, 12,000, and 13,000 one-day international runs. He has moved from 13,000 to 14,000 runs in 20 innings. He had crossed 13,000 runs in 267 innings.

Champions Trophy 2025: Virat Kohli surpasses Sachin Tendulkar to become fastest to score 14,000 ODI runs

Has India skipper Rohit Sharma become slow in reacting to the ball with age, or is it just form? The question was raised during the India vs Pakistan Champions Trophy match on Feb 23 in Dubai when Rohit was dismissed on a yorker by Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Rohit was living on the edge as India started their chase of 242. He got a yorker first up but was able to jam it out. In the next over, Rohit got a four off a top edge on Naseem Shah's bowling before hitting the bowler for a six on the very next ball.

In Naseem's next over, Rohit hit another four disdainfully through the mid-wicket region. In the over he got out, Rohit had hit Afridi for an upper drive to get a four before the bowler sent back a yoker.

This time, Rohit was too slow to react as the ball went through under his bat even before he could put a bat to it. Have a look at the dismissal below:

Cricket, Sports: Azharuddin’s record stood as a benchmark in Indian cricket for years. His sharp reflexes and safe pair of hands made him a reliable fielder, especially in the slip

Virat Kohli has entered his name in the history books on Sunday (Feb 23) by becoming India’s most successful fielder in one-day internationals (ODIs). The 36-year-old cricketer from Delhi, who made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in Dambulla on August 18, 2008, has 158 catches to his name now in 299 ODIs played so far. Kohli completed his 158th catch in the Champions Trophy 2025 match between India and Pakistan, which is currently underway at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. He can take important catches in high-pressure situations, which has often been a game-changer for India. Mohammad Azharuddin’s record stood as a benchmark in Indian cricket for years. His sharp reflexes and safe pair of hands made him a reliable fielder, especially in the slip cordon. The world record for taking the most catches in ODI cricket is held by former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene. During his playing days, Jayawardene played 448 matches and completed 218 catches. He is followed by Ricky Ponting (160 catches in 375 ODIs). Kohli, who is the all-time leading run scorer in ICC white-ball tournaments, will have a chance to break multiple batting records during the game against Pakistan. If the former India captain manages to score at least 15 runs, then he will become the fastest batter to score 14,000 runs in ODIs. Only two batters so far have managed to score more than 14,000 runs in ODI cricket. Champions Trophy 2025: Kohli goes past Azharuddin’s record for most catches by an Indian fielder in ODIs

India's Hardik Pandya was not happy when Pakistan's Babar Azam hit him for a four during the India vs Pakistan Champions Trophy match on Feb 23 in Dubai. The all-rounder, however, came back strongly and sent back Babar on the very next ball after being hit for four and celebrated with a 'keep talking and fly away' send-off as well.

'Babar is a special player' Drawing parallels with Pakistan cricket, Sarfaraz also stressed the importance of structuring the team around Babar Azam. "Babar is a special player, and Pakistan should build a setup where he can play a full 50-over innings, just like Kohli does for India. He needs batters around him who can accelerate while he anchors the innings." Sharing his thoughts on India-Pakistan cricket relations, Sarfaraz highlighted the warmth Pakistanis have for Indian players. "The people of Pakistan love and respect Indian cricketers. They want to see the Indian team play in Pakistan. International stars like Steve Smith, Kane Williamson, and Pat Cummins have played here, and the security arrangements have been excellent," he said. Reflecting on cultural similarities, Sarfaraz noted the striking resemblance between Karachi and Mumbai. "There is no difference—only a line separates us. The way people talk, the style of living, even the old markets in Delhi and Karachi feel the same," he said. "We just hope the Indian team visits Pakistan so fans can watch Kohli, Rohit, and Bumrah play live."

Champions Trophy, IND vs PAK: India lose record 12th toss in a row, then Rohit trolls former coach Shastri

Cricket’s fiercest rivalry is back as India takes on Pakistan in a high-octane clash in Dubai. The two arch-rivals have a history of unforgettable battles, including Pakistan’s dominant 180-run win in the 2017 Champions Trophy final. With the world watching, who will emerge victorious this time?

India and Pakistan set for high-stakes clash in Dubai

Ace Indian seamer Mohammad Shami bowled five wides in his 11-ball first over against Pakistan in Dubai in the Champions Trophy, becoming the first-ever from the country to bowl as many wides in a single over in One Dayers. Unlike how he began in the tournament opener against Bangladesh at the same venue, having picked a wicket in his first over, the right-arm seamer bowled wayward this time, giving away free runs to Pakistan.

Up until now, several Indian bowlers had bowled four wides in an over, including ex-India quick Zaheer Khan, who did it four times (twice against Sri Lanka in 2012 and twice during the 2003 ODI World Cup), and RP Singh, who bowled it twice. Laxmipathy Balaji and Irfan Pathan are the other two seamers who once held this unwanted record.

Following a steady start, star batter Babar Azam opened his arms against Harshit Rana, driving two beautiful-looking shots on either side. Babar looked in ominous touch, taking on Hardik Pandya on the offside. Before he departed for a well-made 23 off 26 (to Pandya, caught behind), he came down the track to Axar Patel, hitting him over long-on for a boundary, much to cheers from thousands of Pakistani fans in attendance.

Cricket, Sports: Previously, several Indian bowlers had bowled four wides in an over in ODIs, but none five, and Mohammed Shami broke this record against Pakistan.

Mohammed Shami becomes the FIRST Indian to bowl 5 wide balls in an over in ODIs. 5 - Mohammed Shami v PAK, TODAY 4 - Zaheer Khan v AUS, 2003 4 - Zaheer Khan v NETH, 2003 4 - L Balaji v SL, 2004 4 - RP Singh v AUS, 2007 4 - RP Singh v BAN, 2008 4 - Zaheer Khan v SL, 2012 4 -… pic.twitter.com/ek252kybrp — Kausthub Gudipati (@kaustats) February 23, 2025 Also read | Champions Trophy: Rawalpindi forecast for PAK-BAN game piles pressure on Pakistan ahead of India face-off Coming around the wicket to Imam-ul-Haq, who walked in as a replacement for injured Fakhar Zaman, Shami bowled a couple of them on the leg side before going wide from the batter on the offside, keeping keeper KL Rahul busy behind the stumps.
Pakistan batter Babar Azam started off his innings in a positive way during the Champions Trophy match against India on Feb 23 in Dubai. The batter hit five fours in his innings of 23 runs but eventually became victim of his own favorite shot—the drive.

Opening the batting with Imam ul Haq, Babar used his wrists for his first four between midwicket and mid-on off Harshit Rana in the fourth over. In the same over, Babar drove a pitched-up delivery for another four, showing his class. Watch the shot below:

Babar, who was criticised a lot for his slow innings in the opening match against New Zealand, scored a quickfire 23 off 26 balls with five fours before being dismissed. Have a look at the wicket below:

Champions Trophy, IND vs PAK: Babar Azam hit five fours in his innings of 23 runs but eventually became victim of his own favorite shot - the drive. Cricket Sports

Watch the shot below: View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) In the seventh over, bowled by Hardik Pandya, Babar creamed another overpitched delivery for his third four of the day. In the next over by spinner Axar Patel, the Pakistan batter smashed one boundary over mid-on. Babar tried the same shot on the next ball, but this time edged it behind as the ball moved away after pitching, hindering the drive. Babar, who was criticised a lot for his slow innings in the opening match against New Zealand, scored a quickfire 23 off 26 balls with five fours before being dismissed.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Hussain didn’t complain much, considering the conditions (wet outfield), but addressed Buttler’s situation at the helm, saying that though England played fine on the day, scoring a massive team total, Buttler must pull up his socks and his team’s too before it gets too late for everyone.

Champions Trophy: Rawalpindi forecast for PAK-BAN game piles pressure on Pakistan ahead of India face-off

Ace batter Virat Kohli's form is a cause of concern for the team as India take on Pakistan in the blockbuster Champions Trophy match on Feb 23 in Dubai. Kohli, considered as one of the greatest ODI batters of all time, has played just seven games since Nov 19, 2023 including the ODI World Cup final and has managed to score only 191 runs. Kohli has scored these runs at an average of 27 with just two fifties to his name.

Speaking to the media ahead of the match, Javed noted that the hype around the India-Pakistan game is external; as for the players, although it remains an honour to be a part of it, that’s their job as professionals to win matches for the team, and that they must take this crucial tie against India like any other game.

Former Pakistan pacer Wahab Riaz believes that the team must not dwell on their loss against New Zealand but instead focus on maintaining composure under pressure. Riaz pointed out that while Pakistan missed crucial moments in their last match, they have the skills and ability to bounce back.

“Being cautious was good, but one has to play to the situation. Cricket is as much a mental game as it is about skill. We missed a trick in the last match, but I do not think they will repeat the same mistakes against India,” Wahab Riaz, JioHotstar expert, replied to WION's question while addressing the media prior to the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 clash between India and Pakistan.

He highlighted the role of pressure in such high-profile games, emphasising that handling nerves will be vital. “You can have all the talent in the world, but if you cannot manage pressure, you will struggle. Pakistan needs to stay focused and build their innings wisely,” he added.

Riaz also acknowledged that Pakistan’s lack of one-day international matches in recent months has impacted their consistency. However, he believes the team can still turn things around if they trust their abilities and remain mentally strong.

Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar echoed similar sentiments, stressing that Pakistan must overcome their mental hurdle against India to stand a chance. He recalled how Indian teams of the past struggled psychologically against Pakistan, but the roles have now reversed.

“Deep down, Pakistan knows they are up against a superior team. It’s a tough mindset to shake off. We used to face the same challenge in the 80s and 90s against them. Unless they believe they can win, it will be difficult,” Manjrekar remarked.

While praising India’s dominant performance in the tournament so far, he also offered words of caution for star batter Virat Kohli.

'Kohli has been overthinking his game'

“Kohli has been overthinking his game, and when you start doing that, you complicate things unnecessarily. His challenge right now is more mental than technical. He needs to go in with a relaxed mindset and not put additional pressure on himself,” he advised.

Manjrekar also addressed the pressure on Pakistan’s bowlers, particularly Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf, who failed to make an impact in their previous match. “When you’re low on confidence, the ball does not come out the way you want it to. Shaheen has the ability, but he needs to back himself mentally,” he added.

Both Riaz and Manjrekar agreed that managing high-pressure situations will be the decisive factor in this match. Riaz highlighted the importance of making smart decisions under pressure, while Manjrekar emphasised that belief in one’s ability is non-negotiable in such big encounters.

“Pakistan must approach this game with the belief that they can win. If they start off doubting themselves, India will capitalise. Similarly, India must not take things for granted. They have been dominant, but in cricket, momentum shifts fast,” Manjrekar opined.

With India riding high on confidence and Pakistan desperate for redemption, the mental game will dictate the outcome. The team that stays composed, absorbs the pressure, and executes under stress will emerge victorious in what promises to be another unforgettable chapter in this historic rivalry.

Pakistan head coach Aaqib Javed has placed his trust in the pace trio of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf, believing they will deliver “something special” in the must-win Champions Trophy clash against India on Sunday (Feb 23).

Pakistan faces immense pressure, not only due to their recent record against India but also because of the absence of Fakhar Zaman, who was instrumental in their 2017 Champions Trophy final victory but has been ruled out due to injury.

“Fakhar is a big loss. He is a match-winner, but we have confidence in the rest of our players,” Javed said at the pre-match press conference.
