<p>A Japanese filmmaker is shaking Cannes film audiences to the core with a dystopian vision of her country in which old people agree to be euthanised to solve the challenge of a rapidly ageing population.</p>

<p>'Plan 75'&nbsp;by Japanese director and writer Chie Hayakawa is based on a very real problem.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Japan is the most rapidly-ageing industrial society, a trend that is causing huge economic and political problems as a dwindling number of younger people must support a growing army of the old.</p>

<p>Close to 30 percent of Japan's population is over 65, the majority women, and that rate is expected to continue rising in the coming decades.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the movie, anybody over 75 is encouraged to sign up for a deal with the government by which they receive a sum of money in return for agreeing to be euthanised. A collective funeral is thrown in for free.</p>

<p>Slick ad campaigns and calls from people with soothing voices are part of the effort to get people to sign up. Handsome advisors list the small pleasures candidates could afford with the money. "You'll be able to go to the restaurant," says one.</p>

<p>"On the face of it, the government's Plan 75 is full of goodwill and friendliness and pragmatism, but in truth, it is both very cruel and shameful," Hayakawa told AFP in an interview.</p>

<p>"The ageing of the population is not a recent problem, I've always heard people discussing it," she said.</p>

<p>"When I was young, a long life was considered to be a good thing, people had respect for older people. That's no longer the case," the 45-year-old director added.</p>

<p>- 'Cold and cruel' -</p>

<p>'Plan 75', Hayakawa's first full-length feature film, is full of slow sequences with minimal camera movement.</p>

<p>"I wanted the images to be aesthetic and beautiful, as well as cold and cruel, just like the plan itself," she said.</p>

<p>Asked how close to today's Japanese reality her scenario is, Hayakawa quickly answered "eight out of 10".</p>

<p>She said she interviewed older people as part of her research for the movie and discovered that many found merit with the idea of buying financial security with their willingness to end their life.</p>

<p>"It would alleviate the stress of wondering how they can survive once they are alone. Choosing the moment and the method of their death could be very reassuring," she said.</p>

<p>She said the approach would find support among the younger generations, too.</p>

<p>"If such a plan was on the table today, I believe that many people would accept it, even welcome it as a viable solution," she said.</p>

<p>"Most young people worry already what the end of their life will look like. Will their basic needs be met? Can they survive once they live alone? Can they afford to age?" she said.</p>

<p>Instead of blaming the government, Hayakawa said many young people were resentful of the old.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"They are frustrated and angry because they work hard to support the elderly, but they think that, when it's their turn, there may be nobody to support them," she said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"What worries me a lot is that we're in a social reality that would very much favour such a radical solution," she said. "It's scary."</p>

<p>Hayakawa said her film did not presume to offer a solution to handling the age crisis. "But an honest assessment of where we are today would already be a key step," she said.</p>

<p>Indian celebrities are leaving no chance to spread the colours of <em>desi</em> culture at the 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. On Wednesday, Indian Union Minister for Information &amp;Broadcasting, Youth Affairs &amp; Sports, Anurag Thakur and Bollywood divas including Deepika Padukone, Tamanaah Bhatia, Urvashi Rautela, and Pooja Hegde turned heads with their impromptu dance on Rajasthani folk singer Mame Khan`s 'Ghoomar'. Mr Thakur and Padukone inaugurated India Pavilion at the French Riviera.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the inaugural event, Mame Khan, who is part of the Indian contingent, broke into a beautiful song at everyone's request and Deepika, Pooja Hegde, Tamannaah Bhatia and Urvashi Rautela were seen dancing in unison.</p>

<p>The entire event became more captivating when all the ladies came together and started showing off their Indian moves to Mame Khan`s soulful melody.</p>

Cannes 2022 has started with India being at the centre of focus. After Deepika Padukone stunned in a Saree at the Jury Call on May 17, R Madhavan along with Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Vani Tripathi, Prasoon Joshi, Anurag Thakur and Shekhar Kapur represented India at the Cannes Film Festival red carpet.

The actor after years of hard work and stardom in Bollywood, has been signed on for an international project. He will be playing the lead role in an American indie film named ‘Laxman Lopez.’</p>

<p>Directed by Roberto Girault, and pitched as a Christmas-themed film, the shoot will entirely take place in the US. The film will go on the floor by the end of 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Roberto Girault is a Mexican filmmaker, who has given hits like 'La Leyenda Del Diamante' (2017), 'Los Arboles Mueren de Pie' (2015) and 'El Estudiante' (2009).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Writer and co-producer of the horror flick 'Little Darling', Lalit Bhatnagar will be producing the film.&nbsp;</p>

"For starters, the opportunity to work in a Christmas movie is something very different and immediately had my attention. The director, Roberto Girault, has shown his power and command over the camera, and the way he can unveil new sides to an actor. It is a welcome challenge that I often yearn for. And most importantly, the name, Laxman Lopez, had me instantly curious,” the actor said.&nbsp;<br />

Meanwhile, director Girault said, "I am very excited about this collaboration. This script is close to my heart and the transition of the story and the challenges that the lead character faces are sure to have everyone intrigued.”<br />

<p>Having handed its top prize, the Palme d'Or, to the blood-soaked 'Titane'&nbsp;last year, there is more horror on the slate for the 75th edition that kicks off on May 17.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Among the most anticipated entries is the return of body-horror maestro David Cronenberg with 'Crimes of the Future'.</p>

<p>The new tale from the twisted genius behind 'The Fly','Crash'&nbsp;and 'Videodrome'&nbsp;is set in a future world where people undergo disgusting surgical alterations for the sake of art and sexual pleasure, starring Lea Seydoux and Viggo Mortensen.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The festival's opening film is also an ode to the horror genre, though this time with a tongue firmly in its cheek -- "Final Cut" is a pastiche of zombie films from the makers of Oscar-winning silent movie "The Artist".&nbsp;</p>

<p>It is not a one-off. Cannes opened with another zombie comedy, Jim Jarmusch's "The Dead Don't Die", in 2019.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Only six horror films have ever been nominated for a best picture Oscar -- "The Exorcist", "Jaws", "The Silence of the Lambs", "The Sixth Sense", "Black Swan" and "Get Out".</p>

<p>"Film festivals like Cannes are renowned for exhibiting boundary-pushing&nbsp;cinema... and horror movies offer some of the most unique, inventive and&nbsp;challenging films," Kate Robertson, a New York-based expert on cinema, told AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>That is certainly the case with "Men" from "Ex Machina" director Alex Garland and starring Jessie Buckley, which premieres in the Director's Fortnight section at Cannes next week.</p>

<p>It uses horror tropes -- home invasion, an inescapable village full of monsters and various revolting bodily mutilations -- but deploys them for an ingenious and very contemporary story about a woman dealing with the trauma of a manipulative ex-husband.</p>

<p>"Horror is not just about entertainment. It can allow us to experience and resolve emotions, offer catharsis, consider our relationships and even our place in the world," said Robertson.</p>

<p>Cannes has often sought entries to shake up its attendees.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"People need to understand that genre cinema is a way to talk about individual people and about our deepest fears and desires in a profound, raw and direct way."</p>

<p>It remains to be seen if "Titane" sets a precedent or remains an exception.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The lack of consideration for this kind of film is reflected in the prizes," said Robertson.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Ducorneau's win for Titane last year was a thrilling surprise for many and hopefully points to wider industry changes."</p>
