The 63rd Grammy awards nominations were announced on Tuesday and was dominated by Beyonce who earned 9 nominations in total. While many celebrated the mention of alternative musicians in the list, there were of course some notable snubs.

Canadian singer The Weeknd did not find a single mention in the list. Fans and the singer himself had expected the Grammys to acknowledge his recent album 'After Hours' which ranked on top Billboard till recently and has been well received.

Soon after the announcement was made, The Weekend accused the Recording Academy- the body responsible for the awards- of being 'corrupt'.

Hours after The Weeknd accused the Academy of being corrupt, its chief Harvey Mason Jr has responded in statement.

"Congratulations to today’s GRAMMY’s nominees who have earned their peers’ recognition for their incredible work," he wrote. "There were a record number of submissions in this unusual and competitive year. We understand that The Weeknd is disappointed at not being nominated. I was surprised and can empathize with what he’s feeling. His music this year was excellent, and his contributions to the music community and broader world are worthy of everyone’s admiration. We were thrilled when we found out he would be performing at the upcoming Super Bowl and we would have loved to have him also perform on the GRAMMY stage the weekend before," the statement that has been provided to The Hollywood Reporter, reads.

"Unfortunately, every year, there are fewer nominations than the number of deserving artists," the statement continued. "But as the only peer-voted music award, we will continue to recognize and celebrate excellence in music while shining a light on the many amazing artists that make up our global community. To be clear, voting in all categories ended well before The Weeknd’s
performance at the Super Bowl was announced, so in no way could it have affected the nomination process. All GRAMMY nominees are recognized by the voting body for their excellence, and we congratulate them all, " it further added.

Other artists such as Harry Styles, BTS, Luke Combs, The Jonas Brothers and more were also snubbed.

Styles received nominations in the best pop vocal album category but he was shut out of all four major categories.

BTS, on the other hand, created history as it became the first K-pop band to earn a Grammy nomination in a pop duo/group performance category.

Not just Weeknd but Justin Bieber too showed his displeasure over the nominations.

Bieber received four nominations including best pop solo performance for 'Yummy,' but stated that his album 'Changes' should have been categorized as R&B instead of Pop.

"To the Grammys, I am flattered to be acknowledged and appreciated for my artistry," Bieber wrote. "I am very meticulous and intentional about my music. With that being said, I set out to make an R&B album. Changes was and is an R&B album. It is not being acknowledged as an R&B album, which is very strange to me. I grew up admiring R&B music and wished to make a project that would embody that sound. For this not to be put into that category feels weird, considering from the chords to the melodies to the vocal style, all the way down to the hip-hop drums that were chosen, it is undeniably, unmistakably an R&B album!" the singer said on Instagram.

K-Pop's BTS marks year of the pandemic with 'BE' album, and single 'Life Goes On'

South Korean boyband sensation BTS will welcome in the New Year with their first live concert since they were forced to call off a world tour because of the novel coronavirus, their management company, Bit Hit Entertainment, said on Thursday.

The concert - "2021 New Year`s Eve Live" - will be on Dec. 31 just outside the South Korean capital, Seoul, and will include other groups on the Big Hit label including NU`EST, GFriend and ENHYPEN. Limited seating will be available, in line with government coronavirus safety guidelines, though Big Hit did not specify numbers. The show will be streamed online.

"It will be the first concert to feature Big Hit artists in one grand event, capped with the countdown to welcome in the New Year," Big Hit said.
The seven-member BTS had to call off their tour of nearly 40 concerts in Asia, Europe and the United States, which had been due to begin in April, as the coronavirus spread around the world.

They played a virtual concert last month, drawing more than 990,000 viewers from 191 countries, and fetching some 50 billion won ($45 million) in ticket sales.

Since their 2013 debut, the band has ridden a global K-Pop wave with catchy, upbeat music along with lyrics and social campaigns aimed at empowering young people.

Their latest hit was 'Dynamite', their first song entirely in English, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in September.

BTS member Suga who took a break from his hectic schedule as he underwent shoulder surgery on November 3, is now on the path to the recovery of his torn shoulder labrum.

Big Hit Entertainment, the company that manages popular K-pop band released the statement, that reads: ''Suga underwent surgery to repair his torn shoulder labrum on Nov. 3. The surgery, to address a problem that had constantly been a health and wellness issue for Suga, was completed successfully, and he is currently resting and recovering following his physician’s advice that Suga must undergo a strict and unhindered period of recovery.''

Suga shoulder issue began before his debut when the singer got injured in an accident that occurred in 2012, and he was diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder in 2013, ''As many fans know, Suga has long suffered from shoulder-related health issues,” the statement continued. “Suga’s shoulder issues began when he was injured in an accident that occurred in 2012 before his debut, and he was diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder in 2013. Shoulder pains continued until he was further diagnosed in 2019 with a ‘posterior labral tear of his left shoulder,’ which means that the cartilage around his left shoulder joint has been torn. Since then, he has continued to receive various treatment to prevent his injury from affecting his activities'' the statement reads.

Further, the managing company also shared the 27-year-old experience with the brutal pain, '' sudden bouts of pain since an accident in 2012, which has forced him into continual rehab and treatment over the years. Despite the treatment, the injury he sustained began to impact his life and career, prompting the decision to go under the knife''.

Suga aka Min Yoon-gi also released a statement for his fans where he gave an update about the surgery and when he is going to come back, ''Please understand this time (is) my chance to prepare to meet you again strong and healthy. Even if I must be away for a short while, please wait for me to come back to you, '' he shared.

However, they noted, “It may be difficult for Suga to meet his long-awaited fans for some time, including for the upcoming BTS BE album promotional activities. We apologize to every fan who has waited patiently to meet Suga again, and we ask for your generous and loving understanding. Still, its is unclear, hat he will not join the rest of the group for BTS’ performance at Nov. 22’s 2020 American Music Awards.

BTS gave a surprising treat to their Army recently as they released new album photos. BTS’ new album ‘BE’ is only weeks away from being released, fans are digging for clues about everything imaginable involving the album. Since Suga was in charge of the album’s cover art, fans believe he’s already hinted at in the group’s first concept photo. In the picture, RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, Jungkook, and V are seated around their slew of instruments in a room bathed in aqua. Hanging on the wall behind them is a singular painting. Now fans are convinced that the framed picture in the BE concept photo is the same painting that Suga was working on. They also believe that it will be the album cover for BE. Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic had other plans. Still, the band members made sure to stay connected with their ARMY as much as possible. They released new music and snagged their first number one hit, “Dynamite” on the Billboard charts. BE is slated to be one of their most authentic records to date since they were all heavily involved in the creation and direction of the album, from start to finish. Jimin was the project manager for BE, Suga was the album jacket visual manager, and V was in charge of visuals. Well, if the tease for the new album has only made the BTS Army around the world excited, expecting something ‘dynamic’ from the uber-popular K-Pop group.

After their latest song ‘Dynamite’ became a global hit post its launch in August, in a recent interview to NDTV, BTS members said, First of all, thank you for the love and support, even though we haven’t been there. It’s crazy these days. I think we can’t say just one thing. BTS to fans in India: We want to be there, say namaste, sing and dance together

Big Hit Entertainment Co Ltd, the management agency of South Korean K-pop group BTS, saw its stock fall as much as 23% on Friday, extending losses from its debut the previous day as pricing eased after pre-listing hype.

The stock had dipped from its debut price ahead of Thursday closing, with analysts saying the lower price should be viewed as more reasonable and based on the fundamentals of a company which relies heavily on that one boy band for revenue.

Analysts said Big Hit`s valuation based on its initial public offering (IPO) price of 135,000 won per share was comparable to peers such as K-Pop agencies SM Entertainment Co Ltd and JYP Entertainment Corp.

They said the price, which fell as low as 199,000 won on Friday, seemed to be returning to Earth after a period of overheated speculation pushed Big Hit`s debut to double the IPO price and then fuelled a further 30% surge shortly after.
The short-lived surge echoed the strong debuts of SK Biopharmaceuticals Co Ltd in July and Kakao Games Corp last month, as South Korean retail investors known as "Ants" capitalise on government economic stimulus which has flooded markets with cash.

However, unlike a pharmaceutical maker with a pipeline of drugs or a mobile game developer benefiting from a stay-at-home trend, K-pop agencies that depend on a few star artists can see more fluctuation in share prices, analysts said.
BTS accounted for 97.4% of Big Hit's revenue in 2019 and 87.7% in the first half of 2020, a regulatory filing showed.
"Big Hit`s reliance on BTS is still absolute when including non-management, indirect sales such as merchandise, intellectual property and content," said Hyundai Motor Securities analyst Kim Hyun-yong. "It must make all-out efforts to create a post-BTS revenue source."

The KOSPI benchmark <.KS11> closed down 0.8%.

"It must make all-out efforts to create a post-BTS revenue source." The KOSPI benchmark <.KS11> closed down 0.8%.

BTS manager Big Hit takes a beating as stock loses more than a fifth

Shares in Big Hit Entertainment defied the pre-listing hype to dip on their first day of trade on Thursday, giving the management label of South Korean superstar K-pop group BTS a market valuation of 8.7 trillion won ($7.61 billion).

Big Hit, which relies heavily on the boy band for revenue, doubled its initial public offering price to debut at 270,000 won per share, for a 9.6 trillion won valuation. Shares surged by as much as 30% in early trade before dropping back.

Analysts said the closing share price of 258,000 won, still around 90% above the IPO price, should be viewed as a more reasonable price based on fundamentals, rather than a sign of listing failure.

"The closing price is already around analysts` average target price for 2022, based on estimations of profit increases," said eBest Investment & Securities analyst Jina An.

Volatility in early trade - Big Hit topped the daily turnover list with 1.94 trillion won worth of stock changing hands - was to be expected for such a large, high-profile listing, she added.

Analysts say Big Hit has proved itself online savvy, using Youtube, social media and online concerts for revenue generation since in-person performances were cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

But concerns continue about Big Hit`s reliance on its star artists, which makes revenue especially vulnerable to any disruptions in output from key talent. BTS, which has a huge global following, accounted for 87.7% of the label`s revenue in the first half of 2020, according to a regulatory filing.

"The industry is booming, but it`s also very cyclical, and undergoes a lot of fluctuations," said Kim Hyun-yong, analyst at Hyundai Motor Securities, citing potential obstacles such as the country`s mandatory military service.

That service is looming for BTS, with the eldest member of the band currently required to sign up by the end of next year and the remaining six members over the following five years.

Some lawmakers and fans have called for the band to receive an exemption from or postponement of the roughly two-year commitment, arguing they are doing plenty for their country without wearing a soldier`s uniform.

Earlier this week, BTS faced a barrage of criticism in China after the band`s lead member made remarks about the 1950-53 Korean War. BTS-related social media posts of big-name brands, including Samsung, FILA and Hyundai, subsequently disappeared from Chinese e-commerce platforms.

Thursday`s float made the band members instant multimillionaires, with each granted shares worth 17.6 billion won ($15.39 million) at the closing price, but BTS` official Twitter account did not reference the listing, focusing instead on the group`s win at the coinciding U.S. Billboard Music Awards for Top Social Artist.

NEW ARTISTS?

Analysts said BTS` successful online concerts and Big Hit`s unprecedented level of control over its revenue streams via its Weverse fandom platform that distributes BTS content and sells merchandise, differentiate the label.

"Although offline concerts are impossible for the time being, Big Hit`s results in the first half of this year show that the content and merchandise made profits; it was hardly affected on-year," said KTB Investment & Securities analyst Nam Hyo-ji.

Big Hit founder and co-CEO Bang Si-hyuk said the company would continue "to research, challenge, discover innovative business models, and apply them to continue to grow in the global market."

The listing added to heightened IPO activity in South Korea, with volumes rising 51% to $2.9 billion so far this year, compared with the same period last year, according to Refinitiv data.

The pipeline looks solid after government stimulus to boost the economy amid the coronavirus pandemic flooded markets with cash, analysts said. Online game developer Krafton, and chat app operator Kakao`s mobile banking unit KakaoBank have both begun preliminary processes for listing.

South Korea's Big Hit market debut tempered by reliance on K-pop group BTS

There is no stopping for K-pop boy band BTS. The popular boyband has once again created history by becoming the first-ever musical-act in history to top Billboard’s Social 50 chart for 200 weeks in a row!

BTS landed on the top of the charts first in October 2016 and have been at the top ever since.

Earlier in February, the band broke the previous record of Justin Bieber, who had ranked No. 1 for 163 weeks.

The band appeared in nearly all chart metrics, which is attributable to the promotion of 'Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat),' the latest version of the hit song 'Savage Love' by singer Jason Derulo and New Zealand producer Jawsh 685 featuring BTS, Billboard said.
The band's new single 'Dynamite' which has proved to be its biggest hit, also contributed in cementing the band's position at the top.

Meanwhile, Big Hit Entertainment, the management label of the band, debuted at double it's initial public offering (IPO) price on Thursday, as investors scrambled for a piece of the country`s largest listing in three years.

BTS creates history! Becomes the first artist to top Billboard's Social 50 for consecutive 200 weeks

Big Hit Entertainment, the management label of popular South Korean boy band BTS, debuted at double its initial public offering (IPO) price on Thursday, as investors scrambled for a piece of the country`s largest listing in three years.

Big Hit shares opened at 270,000 won, valuing the company at about 9.6 trillion won (6.4 billion pounds), compared with an IPO price of 135,000 won per share last month.

The stock rose as much as 30% in early trade to 351,000 won, compared with a 0.3% fall on the benchmark KOSPI. That puts the company on track to join the all-time top 10 debuts on the South Korean stock market, based on first-day closing prices.

South Korean retail investors earlier this month laid out 58.4 trillion won in orders for Big Hit shares, falling just short of a record 58.55 trillion won for the retail portion of Kakao Games` listing in September.

Big Hit relies heavily on BTS, with the Billboard-topping group accounting for 87.7% of the label`s revenue in the first half of 2020, according to a regulatory filing.

The seven-member boy band has a huge global fan base, which the label has promoted effectively through social platforms and online performances since in-person performances were cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Analysts say the company has proved itself extremely online savvy, using Youtube and social media for market infiltration. It also has an unprecedented level of control over its revenue streams via its Weverse fandom platform that distributes BTS content and sells merchandise, which has the potential to draw in other artists.

"Big Hit has a different business model than the other big three K-Pop labels, JYP, SM and YG," said Nam Hyo-ji, analyst at KTB Investment & Securities. "Although not completely free from the effect of COVID-19, it`s freer than other labels."
BTS earned a Guinness World Records title for most viewers for a livestreamed performance after its first paid online concert in June drew nearly 757,000 from 107 countries.

The listing ceremony at the Korea Exchange (KRX), attended by Big Hit founder and co-CEO Bang Si-hyuk, was broadcast live on the label`s Youtube channel. The listing makes the BTS members multimillionaires, with each granted shares worth as much as 24 billion won according to early trade.

BTS to release its second album of 2020 in November

Kim Eun-hee wants to complete her collection of memorabilia of Korean boy band BTS by bidding more than $120,000 to buy shares in the group’s music label Big Hit Entertainment in South Korea’s hottest IPO, which could even shake money-markets.

Fervour is building among die-hard South Korean BTS fans to secure at least one share of the K-pop band’s label as order books for next month’s listing opened this week.

“I’m adding my support to BTS by buying shares; it will add onto my collection here,” the 51 year-old said in the BTS-themed cafe she runs in Seoul, which is filled with BTS merchandise, from a 47-inch wide photo of band member Jin to toys designed by the group.

Big Hit Entertainment is betting that going public will be a smash hit riding on the success of the seven-member band, which has become the first South Korean group to reach No.1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with catchy song “Dynamite.”

There is already insatiable demand for new share listings from South Korean retail investors - known as “Ants” - because government stimulus efforts to bolster the economy after the coronavirus crisis has flooded markets with cash.

Analysts predict Big Hit will take the crown as South Korea’s hottest initial public offering, one that the central bank is watching closely as a massive oversubscription for shares could send ripples through short-term money markets.

“Gross bids from retail investors could hit 100 trillion won ($85.23 billion), its the biggest fish of the year,” said Hwang Hyun-jun, an analyst at DB Financial Investment. “Liquidity party is still on, and the timing couldn’t be better as BTS has just topped the Billboard.”

ARMY OF ANTS
Big Hit is looking to raise as much as 962.6 billion won ($825.9 million) in the IPO that is set to be South Korea’s largest in three years.

The offering of about 7.1 million new shares is currently pegged at 105,000 - 135,000 won per share. The final price is may be announced early next week or late Friday afternoon.

But the stock’s valuation is less of an issue for Kim and other BTS fans - who are called ARMY.

Kim and four other fans bidding for shares said they would be lucky to pick up just one share even if they place bids for tens of thousands of dollars because of the expected strong retail demand.

The September listing of Kakao Games attracted 58 trillion won in bids from retail investors alone on orders of about 1,500 times the number of shares offered, setting a record.

Following the flood of orders for Kakao Games’ IPO, the overnight repo rate dipped to a three-month low of 0.38% on Sept. 3 as brokerages placed hundreds of billions of won in preorder deposits from retail bidders into the market, data from the Korea Securities Depository shows.

A Bank of Korea official said the central bank is currently “monitoring short-term money market as an inflow of funds is expected in the IPO market.”

The Big Hit listing is also expected to make the seven BTS members multimillionaires, as CEO Bang Si-hyuk in August gave them 68,385 shares each.

‘DON’T KNOW MUCH ABOUT VALUATION’

Some BTS fans plan to buy Big Hit shares for themselves on band members’ birthdays or other anniversaries.

“I can see myself buying one on V’s birthday,” said Alice Park, referring to one of the band members. Park, a 28-year old banker, is taking out a personal loan of “a couple of hundred grand” to make a bid.

Fans loading up on shares of music labels is not new to the K-pop scene.

Local media has reported that back in 2008, a fan of Girls Generation, an all-female group, bought shares in its label SM Entertainment for 22.5 million won and watched them rise more than 2,700% in three years.

Kim Seo-hyeon, a 12-year old BTS fan in Seoul, has asked her parents to buy her one share so she could meet the members of the band at a future shareholders meeting.

“I don’t know about stock valuations. I know my oppas (BTS band members) are rich but I hope me buying shares make them even richer, so that they can buy something nice to wear, that would make me happy.”

Cardi B, BTS take top spots on inaugural Billboard's Global 200 & Global Excl. US list

For K-pop superstars BTS, 2020 is turning out to be a good year, with the group becoming the first Korean act to debut at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart -- if only they could celebrate with their fans. The group's first English-language song, 'Dynamite' logged nearly 34 million U.S. streams and 300,000 sales in its first week -- the biggest digital sales week for any artist in nearly three years.

"It feels like real, but still like a little unreal at the same time because we cannot meet our fans, we cannot go to some kind of award or performance," said RM, the South Korean rapper, songwriter and frontman of BTS.
"It`s like, we`re so grateful but ... we`re so sad at the same time," he said.

Since their 2013 debut, the South Korean boy band has surfed the global K-pop craze to dizzying heights. When asked why they succeeded over the countless other K-pop groups, the members are unsure.

"All I know is that we came together and did the best we could. That`s all it is, and before we knew it, we reached a height that we never had imagined," said Jimin.

But with much success comes pressure."It would be a lie to say it`s not a burden. But personally, I think an appropriate amount is good for us. We just see it as one of the burdens we must carry," said J-Hope.

The last goal for the seven-member group is to snag a Grammy nomination and win, though they question whether there is a place for them in the United States.

"Grammy solo performance or nomination is like one of our last dreams. So, we will keep doing our best and we hope we could touch the people`s hearts in the Recording Academy someday," RM said.
