Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday (Sep 11) slammed the “ugly” economic warfare by Western nations, accusing them of undermining fair economic competition through sanctions, restrictions on trade routes and other measures. He also hailed BRICS as steadily becoming a bigger force in the global economy. The Russian president also compared the growth of BRICS countries, which make up 40 per cent of the global GDP, to that of the 29 per cent share of G7 nations.Speaking at the BRICS Business Forum in New Delhi, Putin said competition had increasingly taken “ugly forms”, including physical attacks on infrastructure and attempts to restrict international transport.“Sometimes there are measures resorted to of a physical nature, when pipelines are being destroyed, when attempts are undertaken to block international transport corridors, to seize maritime vessels, other illegal restrictions are being applied,” Putin said.He also pointed to the use of secondary sanctions against countries that refuse to align their policies with Western interests. Putin claimed Russia has faced more than 30,000 sanctions, describing the figure as twice the number imposed on all other countries combined.“We’re not against anyone, and what we are doing is not against anyone either. We are in favour of our interests, and we stand ready to work together with all of our partners, old ones and new ones,” he said.
Putin says BRICS outpaces G7
Putin also used the summit to highlight what he described as the growing economic weight of BRICS compared with the Group of Seven. He said BRICS countries accounted for more than 40 per cent of global GDP over the past five years, while the G7 contributed 29 per cent.“Over the last five years, more than 40 per cent of the world GDP has been produced by the BRICS countries, whereas the contribution of the so-called G7, the Group of Seven, I don't know why they call that the Group of Seven, stands at only 29 per cent,” Putin said.According to Putin, BRICS countries also accounted for more than half of global economic growth during the period, compared with 18 per cent for the G7.
Putin highlights BRICS corporate power
Putin attributed the bloc’s growth to its large population, expanding domestic markets and rapid urbanisation. He cited Indian company Mahindra, China’s Huawei, Brazil’s Embraer, UAE-based DPO and Russia’s Rosatom as examples of BRICS businesses gaining international influence.“There are many other success stories from our business community, but behind each and every one of them is hard work on a daily basis,” Putin said.

Can India become the bridge that a deeply divided world desperately needs?

As New Delhi prepares to host the BRICS Summit 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic balancing act comes under the global spotlight. BRICS 2026: Modi, Putin & Xi Meet in New Delhi | Is a New Global Power Shift Coming

As India is set to host the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit, suspense continues over whether Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will visit New Delhi as part of the summit's outreach to other regional groupings. India has invited leaders of the African Union, ASEAN, GCC and BIMSTEC to participate in outreach sessions focused on engaging the Global South. Bangladesh currently holds the chairship of BIMSTEC, or Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation. BIMSTEC comprises Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Naturally, it's the PM of the BIMSTEC chair nation who would be invited to attend the BRICS outreach event. But there is still a lack of clarity on whether Rahman would travel to India. Earlier this week, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said there was no update to share on confirmation of whether the Bangladesh PM will attend the BRICS summit or, if he does not, whether someone else will represent him at the event.
What the minister said about Bangladeshi PM’s visit
India-Bangladesh ties have soured over the past couple of years since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina as PM. She is currently in India, and the Bangladeshi government wants her extradition to stand trial in the neighbouring country.State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir suggested that Rahman was not invited to the BRICS summit, saying that the invitation was instead sent to the BIMSTEC Chair. This is being seen as an issue of granular distinction, as Bangladesh is not a BRICS member, and was indeed invited as BIMSTEC chair.According to a report in the Bangladeshi paper Daily Star, Kobir said, “How shall we go? Has anyone from the Bangladesh government been invited?”“Our prime minister was not invited. Who told you that our Prime Minister was invited? The BIMSTEC Chair was invited. Then why are you asking this question?” Kobir told reporters. The minister added that Rahman’s first visit to India cannot be a multilateral visit, adding that the government was working on arranging a bilateral visit to India when the timing is favourable. The BRICS Summit in New Delhi will be held between September 11 and September 13, along with a host of associated events.

The rapid growth of BRICS has turned the grouping of nations into an increasingly influential alternative voice within the global order. India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is set to arrive in Moscow for a two-day visit as India-Russia relations take centre stage ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s expected visit to India for the BRICS Summit.

During his visit, Jaishankar is expected to co-chair the 27th session of the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation with Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov.

The commission is one of the key mechanisms overseeing economic and broader bilateral cooperation between India and Russia. The two countries also maintain a separate intergovernmental mechanism focused on military and technical cooperation.

Jaishankar’s Moscow visit comes as New Delhi continues to push for greater Russian investment in India and seeks to address the growing imbalance in bilateral trade.

India-Russia trade reportedly crossed $68 billion in 2024-25, while India’s exports to Russia remained significantly lower than its imports. Both countries have set an ambitious target of taking bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030.

Jaishankar is also expected to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, with discussions likely to include the ongoing West Asia conflict and concerns surrounding energy supplies.

The visit comes at a crucial diplomatic juncture for India, which is preparing for several major international engagements, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Kyrgyzstan, the United Nations General Assembly in September and the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval is set to travel to Beijing for the 25th round of India-China Special Representative talks on the long-running boundary dispute.

Doval and his Chinese counterpart, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, are expected to hold crucial discussions on the 3,488-kilometre India-China border dispute. The Special Representative mechanism was established in 2003 to address the complex boundary question between the two countries.

The latest round carries added significance as it comes ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s expected visit to New Delhi for the BRICS Summit. The outcome of the Doval-Wang talks could help shape the diplomatic atmosphere surrounding the high-profile visit.

India has repeatedly stressed that peace and tranquillity along the border are essential for the broader development of bilateral relations with China.

The meeting is also significant because it is the first Special Representatives dialogue in roughly a year. The previous round was held in New Delhi in August 2025, when both sides reaffirmed the importance of the 2005 agreement as a reference point for resolving the boundary issue.
