India is set to lock horns with Australia in the second Test, of the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with a 1-0 lead following a huge&nbsp;win in the series opener&nbsp;at&nbsp;Perth. The second Test, i.e. a day-night encounter, will be held at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. Ahead of the next Test, former Indian cricketer and BCCI selector Devang Gandhi has backed the Indian team management to play Washington Sundar ahead of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. The two senior pros were not part of the Jasprit Bumrah-led Indian XI for the Perth encounter and the in-form Sundar, who ended with 16 scalps in the home series versus New Zealand, played and accounted for two scalps along with some vital runs.

Talking to news agency PTI, Gandhi said, "I do feel that the current form has been taken into consideration. The Indian team management wanted to go in with a team that had confidence and did not exactly look at the records. Washy bowled well against New Zealand and is a reliable lower middle-order batter. So, it does make sense."

"In Australian conditions, you want a restrictive option. This is not to say that Washy can't be attacking, but India's bowling game plan will revolve around Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Harshit Rana. If Mohammed Shami is included at later stages, then he too. So a spinner's job will be to give respite to these speed merchants and bowl one line. Also, you need to be a steady batter. He did well in Brisbane in the last series and looked good in Perth during the second essay (scoring 29). He batted well in Canberra. He is going to be the first choice," Gandhi opined.

Gandhi further mentioned, "This is a very generic idea that you need off-spinners if there are left-handers. You need off-spinners even more when you are bowling to right-handers. Remember Moeen and his line just a shade outside the off-stump. You get bounce and outside edge comes into play. Slight hint of turn, inside edge also."

"If the two lead spinners between them have taken just 1 five-for in 10 years, that's a problem. And when it comes to batting, Washy has a sounder technique compared to the duo," added Gandhi, a veteran of 75 Tests.

Ashwin's record in away Tests has always been under the scanner, despite him having a good run in the last BGT in Australia (ending with 11 wickets). Moreover, the offie didn't have a great run versus NZ at home (picking nine scalps in three Tests). Speaking of Jadeja, the veteran has been among wickets, but the Indian team is currently backing in-form Sundar.

With a win in Perth, it is unlikely that Ashwin-Jadeja will feature in the XI. Hence, Sundar will continue to be the sole spinner for the visitors.

Adelaide Test: 'It does make sense,' Former Indian cricketer backs Washington Sundar ahead of Ashwin, Jadeja

Virat Kohli roared back to form in India's first Test versus Australia, in Perth, of the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy as he scored an impressive 100 not out in the second innings, helping India secure a massive 295-run win.

Ahead of the second Test, to be held at the picturesque Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, Kohli is on the cusp of equalling Sir Don Bradman's huge record. Bradman&nbsp;holds the record for most international hundreds by a batter in a visiting country, with 11 tons in 19 matches in England from 1930-1948. Kohli, on the other hand, has 10 centuries in Australia from 43 games, starting from 2011.&nbsp;

Batters with most 100s in visiting countries:

Don Bradman (Australia) - 11 in England
Virat Kohli (India) - 10 in Australia
Jack Hobbs (England) - 9 in Australia
Sachin Tendulkar (India) - 9 in Sri Lanka
Sir Viv Richards (West Indies) - 8 in England
Sunil Gavaskar (India) - 7 in West Indies

Kohli -- with 81 international tons -- has a bright chance of levelling Bradman's elite record in Adelaide, his happy hunting ground. At the Adelaide Oval, the Indian star batter averages an impressive 63.62 with 509 runs with three hundreds and a fifty in four Tests. Even in the white-ball formats, Kohli has played some memorable knocks at the Adelaide Oval. Thus, he will be eager to carry on with the momentum and get a big score in the upcoming day-night Test between India and Australia, starting on December 6.

After a big win in Perth, India lead the five-match Test series 1-0 and Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. will be desperate to add to Australia's woes in the pink-ball contest. Pat Cummins-led Australia have lost only a solitary day-night Test, out of the 12 played.

BGT 2024/25: Indian batter Virat Kohli eyes Don Bradman's huge record in 2nd Test in Adelaide

India coach Gautam Gambhir has flown back to Australia and will join the Indian team on Tuesday (Dec. 3) in Adelaide - the venue of the second Test which starts from December 6. Gambhir had travelled back to India after the first Test because of 'personal reasons' and missed India's two-day tour game in Canberra. The development was reported by cricket news website ESPNCricinfo.

India are looking at some decisions to be made ahead of the second Test with both regular skipper Rohit Sharma and injured batter Shubman Gill back after missing the first Test in Perth. India, however, managed to win the Perth Test by 295 runs under stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah.

KL Rahul, who had opened in place of Rohit in the first Test, scored 26 in the pink-ball practice game but more importantly opened the innings. If the practice game is any indication, India are likely to keep the same opening pair as in the first Test - Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rahul. India's opening pair added 201 runs in the second innings in Perth - the highest ever for them Down Under.

Assuming Rahul stays as opener, Rohit can come in at number three—a position where Gill usually plays for India. In the situation Rohit bats one down, Gill would have to bat as low as five or six given Virat Kohli comes at number four in Tests and Rishabh Pant well set at number five.

Apart from that, India's bowling seems finalized, with Harshit Rana and Mohammed Siraj being the two pacers apart from Jasprit Bumrah. Rana, who impressed with four wickets in his debut Test, also took four wickets in six balls in the practice game.

For the spinner role, Washington Sundar looks like a lock with the offie getting to bowl and bat both in the tour game. Nitish Kumar Reddy, meanwhile, looks set to retain&nbsp;his place as the all-rounder.

BGT 2024-25: Head coach Gautam Gambhir flies back to Australia as India mull second Test team combination

Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar thinks that Australia camp has some cracks in it. The comments come as India prepare of the second Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test in Adelaide after winning the first one in Perth by 295 runs.

“The panic in the Australian ranks is palpable, what with former players calling for heads to be chopped off and some even hinting at cracks in the Australian team after Josh Hazlewood’s media interview at the end of the third day’s play, where he suggested that it was up to the batters to now do something," wrote Gavaskar in his column for sports magazine Sportstar.&nbsp;

"Now, a few days later, Hazlewood is out of the second Test and possibly the series too with a supposed side strain. Strange, since nobody had noticed anything wrong with Hazlewood at that media conference. Mystery, mystery — the like of which used to be common in Indian cricket in the past. Now it’s the Aussies, and like old McDonald, I’m simply loving it,” he further added.

Hazlewood, notably, had hit out at Aussie batters, especially the top order, for failing to perform across both innings in the Perth Test. The comments were then suggested by former Aussie player Adam Gilchrist as an indication to a rift in the team.

Australia skipper Pat Cummins, however, denied existence of any such situation in the team.

Hazlewood, who was Australia's most successful bowler in Perth, has been sidelined from the day-night Adelaide Test due to an injury. Scott Boland will replace Hazlewood for the Test.&nbsp;

The last time India played in Adelaide was in 2020 and Hazlewood, who took a five-for, had played a pivotal role in dismissing India for 36 in the second innings.

BGT 2024-25: Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar 'loving palpable panic' in Australia team

Travis Head was the only Australian batter to cause little trouble for India in the BGT opener in Perth. Though debutant Harshit Rana bowled him off a jaffa in the first innings, ace India seamer Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Head on 89 in the second. The number one ranked Test bowler impressed everyone with his captaincy and performance, picking eight wickets across both innings; no wonder Head called him ‘one of the greatest ever’.

Praising the Indian pace spearhead, Head said he would tell his grandkids that he faced Bumrah during his playing days.

"Jasprit is probably going to go down as one of the greatest fast bowlers to play the game. We're finding that at the moment, how challenging he can be and it's nice to play against that. It's going to be nice to look back at your career and tell the grandkids that you faced him... Hopefully, I only have to face a few more times as he's been challenging,” Head said ahead of the second Test in Adelaide.&nbsp;

Head and Bumrah have faced off each other several times since the 2018 BGT, and though Head enjoyed scoring runs against Bumrah during the past three ICC events, the India pacer got the better of him in the whites, most recently in Perth.&nbsp;

Travis said for him to deliver against India and mainly Bumrah, he needs to stay mentally fresh and keep a close look at the ball.

“I'm best when I look for the cues when I'm just preparing to watch the ball hard and staying fresh mentally. I think I'm lucky that I've faced him a few times and come across him a fair bit. So I just go back over recent times, and times I've faced him. We've been very fortunate to have played against him a lot so I know what's coming, it's just making sure I'm prepared and fresh to start well,” he continued.

<h2>Travis fancies taking home advantage against Bumrah</h2>

Meanwhile, unlike the visiting team batters who performed exceptionally in the second innings after the first-inning debacle, the Australians struggled across both outings, with Head being the lone exception.

With Australia trailing 0-1 in this five-match Test series, Head needs to up his game and score runs in bulk at his home ground in Adelaide.

"Knowing it quite well, and I have been fortunate to be put in a couple of really good positions to bat. I've come in at some nice times. And growing up and playing on this wicket, it probably suits my game a bit more being (shorter) square of the wicket and the way that the ball can react off the wicket. It's going to be a challenge, but I feel like I'm moving well, feel like I'm in a good space, and go out and try and execute that,” the Aussie batter said on Monday.

India and Australia will square off in the second Test, a Day/Night affair, at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide. For the hosts, seamer Josh Hazlewood is injured and ruled out, with Scott Boland expected to replace him in the XI.&nbsp;

BGT 2024-25: Travis Head fancies runs in Adelaide against ‘one of the greatest ever' Bumrah

After Australia's 295-run loss versus India in the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy opening Test&nbsp;in Perth, pacer Josh Hazlewood's comments made heads turn in the post-match presser. When asked to comment on the massive loss, Hazlewood brought the focus on the batters as they failed in both the innings.

He said, "You probably have to ask one of the batters that question probably, I am sort of relaxing and trying to get a bit of treatment, and I am looking mostly to next Test."

His remark prompted former cricketers like Ravi Shastri and David Warner stating that there might be a rift in the Australian camp, following batters' flop show in Perth.

However, Travis Head has rubbished all such claims ahead of the second Test in Adelaide, starting on Dec 6.

<h2>'One thing with body language and divide and all the stuff that comes out when you face a loss'</h2>

In a press-conference, Head said, "There's most of the dive when we're winning as well. I think that's the one thing with body language and divide and all the stuff that comes out when you face a loss, that this team's been together three or four years, and we were winning. I think it's not much too dissimilar. So yeah, the guys get along really well. We hold high expectations for both sides."

He added, "It's a very individualised sport. So batters want to hold our own. We know the bowl. We know how good our bowlers have been for us in the past, and they've got us out of trouble a lot. So, as a batting group, we know that if we can get enough runs on the ball, we put ourselves in a great position. So as a batter myself, I try to hold a lot of pride in what I do and knowing that if I can set it up for the big boys, that they can knock it down for us."

Head was Australia's top run-getter (89) in the final innings, during the home side's chase of 534 in the Perth Test. Head would hope for more support from the other end in the highly-anticipated pink-ball Test at the picturesque Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, starting on Dec 6.&nbsp;

BGT 2024/25: All not well in Australian camp? Travis Head reacts to Josh Hazlewood's comments

Australia seamer Scott Boland said&nbsp;the hosts need not press the panic button after losing the BGT opener to India in Perth. The first Test ended horrendously for the Aussies (losing by 295 runs) despite reducing India to 150 in the first innings. Stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah guided the visitors’ home, marking their first win at the Optus Stadium and Australia’s first loss. India leads the five-match series 1-0.

“There’s definitely not panic stations in our change rooms. There’s obviously going to be some chats around individual performances, and everyone wants to perform really well every game they play. But it’s like, we’ve lost one game. It’s not toys out of the cot, I don’t think,” Boland said ahead of the India vs Prime Minister’s XI tie in Canberra.&nbsp;

“We’ve spoken as a team about our plans for all the different Indian batters. I won’t tell you those, but we’ve got pretty set plans,” he added.

Meanwhile, with ace pacer Josh Hazlewood ruled out of the second Test in Adelaide, a Day/Night affair starting December 6, Boland is a hot favourite to replace him in the XI. Though he revealed he hasn’t played many games this summer, the right-arm pacer is confident of making inroads in his first Test against India at home.

“Obviously, I haven’t played a heap of cricket at the start of this season, but I feel like I’ve played enough cricket to feel like I’m in a really good spot. My body’s feeling really good now. I had a couple of niggles that were a little bit sore, but knee and foot are feeling really good, and I’m confident how the ball’s coming out.”

“Our last net session in Perth was for me and Josh Inglis, we went pink ball for quite a few overs. So getting it in the hand then and then obviously the overs we can get in probably tomorrow by the look of this weather will be valuable as well,” he continued.&nbsp;

<h2>Boland readies for BGT debut</h2>

Boland last featured in a Test in July 2023 (during Ashes) and is gearing up for a fresh start this summer. The right-arm seamer is part of the Prime Minister’s XI, looking forward to bowling a few overs under the light to get ready for the marquee Adelaide Test.&nbsp;

With Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins accompanying Boland in the second game, Australia will have their game plan set to put India down and announce their comeback in this series.&nbsp;

“There’s definitely not panic stations in our change rooms. There’s obviously going to be some chats around individual performances, and everyone wants to perform really well every game they play. But it’s like, we’ve lost one game. It’s not toys out of the cot, I don’t think,” Boland said ahead of the India vs Prime Minister’s XI tie in Canberra. “We’ve spoken as a team about our plans for all the different Indian batters. I won’t tell you those, but we’ve got pretty set plans,” he added. India batter Shubman Gill returned to the nets for the first time since breaking his thumb in the lead-up to the Perth Test against Australia in BGT. Gill admitted feeling disappointed about missing the series opener but revealed he is happy about his recovery ahead of the second Test in Adelaide, starting December 6. At the start of India’s training session in Canberra on Friday (Nov 29), Gill faced throwdowns in the nets before opening arms in the extended session.

"He is batting right now, and our physio will evaluate him, and I will know his status after that," Team India’s assistant coach Abhishek Nayar said on Friday afternoon. "But from what I have seen, he is looking comfortable batting, and he looks like he can bat [in a match]. He is batting in the indoor nets, and we will know if he can play the practice match or not."

Gill also reflected on his first outing since getting injured during India’s simulation at WACA, saying he just wanted to get the feel of it and see how his injury is reacting.

Speaking on BCCI.TV, Gill said, “It was my first day, and I was just trying to get a feel to be honest, see how the injury is reacting if there was any kind of soreness. But it actually went much better than what I and Kamlesh bhai expected. I am very happy with that”.

Gill made his Test debut Down Under the last time at the MCG. He played a handy knock in the final Test in Brisbane to help India breach Gabba fortress and win the second Test series in Australia. While he played at three venues, including at the SCG in Sydney, Gill is yet to play at the Optus Stadium in Perth.&nbsp;

“When I got to know about my injury, for the first couple of days, I was quite low and disappointed. Perth was the only venue where I didn’t play when we came the last time, and I was looking forward to playing there at such an iconic venue. The way we played that game, at the end of the day, I was very happy,” Gill added.

BGT: Shubman Gill provides update on thumb injury; gears up for return to XI for Pink-ball Test

Ace Indian seamer Jasprit Bumrah has earned unparalleled praise from everywhere since his Perth heroics in the ongoing BGT. In the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, Bumrah captained India in the series opener, picking eight wickets, including five in the first innings, leading his team to draw first blood. However, former Australia seamer Damien Fleming has gone one step ahead by calling Bumrah the ‘Terminator’.

Bumrah was the architect behind India's 46-run lead despite getting folded on 150 in their first innings; he picked five wickets, including four in just one session on day one. The visiting side made merry in their second outing, smashing 487 for six declared, thanks to hundreds from Yashasvi Jaiswal (161) and Virat Kohli (100*), giving Australia a mammoth target of 534.

Like how he began in the first innings, Bumrah ran through Australia’s top order by removing opener Nathan McSweeney (0) and Marnus Labuschagne (3) inside the first six overs to dent their momentum in the chase. Though he only picked one more during the fourth innings (of Travis Head (89), Bumrah broke the camel's back across both innings to help India win the Perth Test.

"He's just the Terminator, isn't he?" Fleming said while chatting with the Sydney Morning Herald. "He knows his strengths, and he's always sniffing to find that weakness. I think he does that instinctively, and it's not a long run-up, but I can see he's reviewed that ball, and then he's planning the next one."

<h2>Slower one to Marsh was Fleming's favourite</h2>

Fleming also recalled one of Bumrah’s most memorable deliveries in Tests Down Under – a slower and lower full toss to dismiss Shaun Marsh during the 2018 away series.

Bumrah bamboozled Marsh with a slower Yorker just at the stroke of stumps during the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, earning praises from all across.

"There's that famous dismissal of Shaun Marsh at the MCG in 2018 in the over before lunch. I was commentating at the time, and I could almost pick what was going to happen, just driving him back, so his weight's on the back foot, and then he bowls that superb slower ball and knocks him over.&nbsp;

"It was either going to be that slower ball or a fast yorker. So I think he is so astute, but he also now has all the skills - outswingers, inswingers, off-cutters, slower balls, excellent yorker, bouncer.&nbsp;

"So, when you've got more skills, you've got more options. Like the Terminator, he's always stalking the batsmen. And the batsmen know that, but they're still unsure what's coming. Not only does he have a wide skill set, but he executes it better than anyone in world cricket,” he continued.

Meanwhile, with Rohit relinking with the Indian squad ahead of the second Test, he will lead the side, and Bumrah will return leading the pace attack of Mohammed Siraj and Harshit Rana.

Bumrah bamboozled Marsh with a slower Yorker just at the stroke of stumps during the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, earning praises from all across. "There's that famous dismissal of Shaun Marsh at the MCG in 2018 in the over before lunch. I was commentating at the time, and I could almost pick what was going to happen, just driving him back, so his weight's on the back foot, and then he bowls that superb slower ball and knocks him over. "It was either going to be that slower ball or a fast yorker. So I think he is so astute, but he also now has all the skills - outswingers, inswingers, off-cutters, slower balls, excellent yorker, bouncer. Injured Indian batting star Shubman Gill has resumed training with the side as he took to the nets on Friday (Nov 29). The news comes as a positive for the Indian side as they prepare for the two-day contest against the Prime Minister XI starting on Saturday. Gill missed the opening Test in Perth due to a fractured left thumb suffered in the game against the WACA Simulation side.

<h2>Gill back training for India</h2>

On the eve of the traditional contest against Prime Minister XI in Canberra, Gill had the willow in his hand and was spotted facing the fast bowlers in the net. The former U19 captain looked sharp and prepared to face, which comes as good news for the Indian side before the pink-ball contest in Adelaide. The 25-year-old is one of the important members of the Indian squad having also featured in the side’s last tour Down Under.

India currently lead 1-0 in the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy and have one eye on the World Test Championship (WTC) final in June. With Gill in the frame for a return, the Indian team could get a double boost with Rohit Sharma also set for a return having been on paternity leave during the Perth Test. Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel could make way for the duo’s return.

The second Test match will be the only pink-ball contest of the series with India having a mixed record. India have won three of the four pink-ball matches but all wins have come on home turf while their only day-night Test on foreign soil ended in a defeat. The sole loss was in the corresponding fixture in the last tour when Australia beat India by eight wickets at the same venue.

With WTC final qualification on the agenda, the fixture will be important for both India and Australia.

BGT 2024/25: Shubman Gill returns to net practice ahead of Prime Ministers XI clash

Former Australian captain Allan Border criticised Pat Cummins-led hosts for letting Virat Kohli 'roll onto a hundred without much resistance' during India's second innings of the Perth Test, which they won by 295 runs. Ahead of the second Test at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, Border slammed Australia's tactics in the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) opener, in Perth, and stated he doesn't want to see a confident Kohli as it would be alarming signs for the hosts.&nbsp;

Talking on SEN radio, Border said, "I was really disappointed in the way we let Kohli roll on to a hundred without much resistance.&nbsp;We don't want this guy full of confidence for the rest of the series.

Meanwhile, former Aussie opener Matthew Hayden had also&nbsp;stated on Channel 7, after India's Perth Test win,&nbsp;"They missed a few tricks with Virat Kohli in the early part of his innings. Nathan Lyon had a mid-on back, one on the off-side catching and a mid-wicket. I felt like it was so easy for him to get off strike." He further opined, "You can't cut a sucker an even break when a bloke is under pressure as he was. The field we finished with - two slips, no point, a man straight - it offered up the outside edge of his bat as well. He found it a little more frustrating. When he got the bit between the teeth, it was too late."

India bundled out for a paltry 150 on the opening day of the 2024/25 BGT edition, after opting to bat first. However, they stormed back into the match by dismissing Australia for 104, with stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah taking 5 for 30. From thereon, it was a one-way traffic as India rode on Yashasvi Jaiswal's 161, Kohli's 100* and KL Rahul's 77 to declare at 487-6, giving a massive 534-run target. Eventually, the home side bundled out for 238 to lose convincingly.&nbsp;

Hayden also slammed the home bowling unit for not testing Jaiswal enough with the short-pitched deliveries. He added, "Jaiswal looked vulnerable against it. Maybe tiny things with Pat Cummins, the ability to think through these decisions. They were shell-shocked from the average batting performance (in the first innings) and as we see now, again, bombs are going."

India have a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series in the ongoing BGT edition Down Under. The second Test kicks off on Dec 6 in Adelaide, i.e. a pink-ball contest. Australia would hope to find ways to keep Kohli at bay, who returned to form and slammed his third Test ton since 2020 (seventh in Australia).

India’s batting coach Abhishek Nayar has confirmed head coach Gautam Gambhir’s availability for the second Test match in Adelaide as the team prepares to face the Aussies for the key clash. Gambhir, left for India due to personal reasons on Tuesday (Nov 26) after India beat the Aussies by record 295 runs in Perth. However, the latest news is a relief for the side as they prepare for the warm-up contest against Prime Ministers XI.

<h2>Nayar confirms Gambhir’s availability</h2>

"Gauti bhai will be here soon. I am not sure about the exact date yet, but he will be in Adelaide before the Test match starts," Nayar told the media on Wednesday. "Two years ago, Harshit was unsure about his future in Delhi cricket. To now represent India and perform as he did is truly heartening to see," Nayar added.

With the visitors playing Australia on Dec 6, Team India had a gap of 10 days between their two competitive fixtures as the head coach decided to board his flight back. However, Gambhir won’t be available for the warm-up fixture against Prime Ministers XI which will take place on Nov 30 and Dec 1 in the capital Canberra. Assistants Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate will be at the helm of the side while bowling coach Morne Morkel will also be in the dugout for the side.

<h2>India to get double boost</h2>

Gambhir’s return to the dugout will be coupled with Rohit Sharma after the Indian skipper missed the opening Test match due to paternity leave. However, the management is sweating on the fitness of Shubman Gill who is facing a race against time with a fractured left thumb.

BGT 2024/25: Abhishek Nayar confirms Gautam Gambhir's availability for Adelaide Test

Veteran Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara feels KL Rahul should continue to bat at the top for India ahead of the second Test versus Australia, starting on Dec 6, in the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) edition. In the first Test, Jasprit Bumrah-led India beat Australia by 295 runs in Perth sans regular captain Rohit Sharma. As Rohit is set to return for the second Test, i.e. a day-night contest in Adelaide, he is likely to take back the opening slot from Rahul, who opened with Yashasvi Jaiswal and scored a crucial 77 in the second innings. However, Pujara feels Rahul should open or, at least, bat at No. 3 if Rohit opens with Jaiswal.

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Pujara told, "I think, for some reason, if we can carry on with the same batting order like KL and Yashasvi to open, Rohit could come in at three, and Shubman could come in at five. If Rohit wants to open, KL should bat at No. 3. Nothing later than that. I think he has to bat top of the order because it suits his game really well. I hope we don't tinker around with that."

At present, Shubman Gill -- who also missed the series opener due to thumb injury -- can also return to the playing XI, further complicating the batting order. However, he is still on the road to recovery. Pujara further opined that if Gill returns, he can take the No. 5 slot.

"Ideally No. 5. Because it allows him to come in at a time, even if we lose two wickets early, he is someone who can negotiate the new ball. But if he walks in after, say, 25 or 30 overs, he can play his shots. He can play his natural game," the former No. 3 batter mentioned.

Pujara was quick to point out that the Bumrah-led bowling attack should remain unchanged. "There is no question about it. This bowling attack has given us success. (Jasprit) Bumrah looked really good. (Mohammed) Siraj was very good. And then it was supported by Harshit. He bowled really well, you have to accept that. He was playing his first game (for India), but still, he ended up pitching the ball up. In Australia, it's very easy to get carried away and sometimes when you look at the pace of the pitch, it offers a bit more extra bounce. But he was still looking to hit the right spot, good length, try and hit the top of off, and he has that ability."

India gambled by playing Washington Sundar over senior spin-bowling all-rounders R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in Perth. Sundar returned with two scalps and also added some vital runs down the order in India's second innings. Thus, Pujara has backed him to retain his spot. "Washington can bat well, which could be vital if the lower-middle order needs to contribute. Although he started slow with the ball, he improved and took a couple of key wickets," the 36-year-old added.

India beat Australia convincingly in Perth to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. After only managing 150 in the first innings, opting to bat first, Rohit-less India rode on stand-in captain Bumrah's 5-fer to dismiss the Aussies for 104. In the second innings, Jaiswal (161), Virat Kohli (100*) and Rahul (77) took India to 487-6, setting a mammoth 534-run target as Australia folded for 238 to lose by a big margin.

Uncapped all-rounder Beau Webster was Thursday added to Australia's squad for next week's second Test against India in Adelaide as cover for Mitchell Marsh. The 30-year-old is on standby after Marsh pulled up sore following their 295-run thrashing by the visitors in the first Test at Perth on Monday. Webster has been in red-hot form for Tasmania in the domestic Sheffield Shield over the past 18 months, with his seam-bowling prowess and explosive batting catching the eye of selectors.

"Webster will join the squad next week having been named the Sheffield Shield player of the year last summer and continuing that form this season," Cricket Australia said.

While questions remain around Marsh, Australia coach Andrew McDonald has indicated they will likely stick with the same team despite being outsmarted in Perth. Webster and the rest of the squad are set to arrive in Adelaide earlier than anticipated to get in extra training sessions ahead of the day-night Test starting on December 6.

BGT 2024/25: Australia call-up uncapped all-rounder Beau Webster ahead of 2nd Test vs India

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting was left surprised after India won the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Monday (Nov.&nbsp;25) with a record-breaking margin. India beat the Aussies at the Optus Stadium in Perth by 295 runs, which left Ponting baffled. According to Ponting, the conditions never favoured India, however, that did not stop Jasprit Bumrah’s side from clinching the Test.&nbsp;

“So, you've got to give them credit. I must admit, I didn't think that they could win the first Test, India, going there in Perth with conditions that are so foreign to them. But I also made a point going into the test match that I actually think India are a better team away from home now than they are at home. I think they play foreign wickets and conditions better than they play their own conditions now. And I think that's been proven over the last week in Perth,” Ponting said while speaking to Star Sports.

In the absence of skipper Rohit, India had a poor start in their first innings before bowlers came out on top. India were bowled out for 150 in their first innings before Jasprit Bumrah and Co. came good with the ball and skittled out Australia for 104. India then scored 487/6 with Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring tons.

India will play against the Aussies in the second Test match starting on Friday (Dec. 6) with skipper Rohit set for his return to the side. He was absent from the opening Test due to paternity leave, which will come as a huge boost for the side. On the other hand, Shubman Gill remains a doubt for the Adelaide Test due to a thumb injury he sustained during a warm-up game against the WACA Simulation side.

BGT 2024/25: Ricky Ponting surprised by India's win in Perth, says 'didn't think that they could win'

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting said he didn’t expect India to win the BGT opener in Perth, let alone win it with a thorough margin. The visiting team headed to Australia suffering their maiden whitewash in Tests at home against New Zealand; with the chips already down, most fans and experts expected Australia to run through their XI and strike the first blow. However, destiny had other plans, and India now leads the five-match series 1-0.

Ponting, who was in Jeddah for the IPL 2025 mega auction, commented on Team India’s performance at the Optus Stadium, saying they are a better touring side than how they perform at home. Although India had the most dominant run at home since 2012 before New Zealand crushed them last month, they are the only side to beat Australia in Down Under twice, beating them in five of the nine contested matches since the 2018 tour.

<h2>India run through Oz in Perth</h2>

India batted first in Perth, scoring a paltry 150 in the first innings. In reply, they dismissed the hosts on 104, with India captain Jasprit Bumrah returning with a five-wicket haul. India then made most of the 46-run lead, and declared after scoring 487 for six in their second inning.&nbsp;

For the touring Indian side, Yashasvi Jaiswal (161) and Virat Kohli (100*) slammed hundreds, setting Australia a daunting target of 534. Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj then reduced the home team to 12 for three at stumps on&nbsp;the third day before wrapping them up on 238, winning the first match by a whopping 295 runs.&nbsp;

“Australia lost by what? Nearly 300 runs. So, they'll be very disappointed. Everyone asked me on day one when India won the toss about having a bat, and I said, no, absolutely, you have to bat first there. Four test matches have been played there.”

“The team batting first has won all four times. You don't want to go against what stats say.”&nbsp;

“Although they were out for 150, they still got a chance to bowl on the wicket when it was probably at its best to bowl on. And Bumrah in those conditions, and Siraj, and actually all three of them. And Nitish Reddy today, they're all very good,” Ponting said while talking on Star Sports.

"India and Australia. We go back a long way, whether it's sport, whether it is trade relations. Over the years, we have enjoyed coming to this part of the world, playing cricket, and enjoying a variety of cultures in the country. And obviously, Australia is one of the challenging, uh, players to come and play cricket because of the passion people have, the competitiveness that every player possesses. Which is why you know for us, it's always been a great challenge to come here and play cricket," Rohit Sharma said in his speech at the parliament.

The Indian team was also joined by the PM XI squad, as Rohit posed with his opposite numbers, Jack Edwards and Anthony Albanese.

Virat Kohli silenced his critics in style by slamming an unbeaten 100 in the second innings of the Perth Test between India and Australia, i.e. the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) opener, which saw Jasprit Bumrah-led visitors win by 295 runs. Kohli had only two Test tons since 2020 and fell flat in India's home season before the Australia series. Despite failing in the first innings at Perth, Kohli impressed one and all with his 81st international hundred. Thus, former Indian head coach Rahul Dravid has backed Kohli to have a memorable series Down Under following his Perth ton.

Talking on Star Sports, Dravid said, "He's been batting really well, even in South Africa a few months ago when we were there, I thought he was batting really well on a couple of difficult wickets. It's just nice for him to be able to get that hundred at the start of the series. I think he could have a big series."

During the Perth Test match, former India opener Sunil Gavaskar spoke about the visible difference in Kohli's batting approach, which helped him break his century drought.

In this regard, Gavaskar opined, "His body was completely relaxed when he came into bat in the second innings. In the first innings, he came out to bat when India had lost two early wickets, he might have been under pressure. In the second innings, I think he gave himself a little more time to play the ball and, apart from the wider stance, I think he allowed himself to play the bounce by being a little bit more upright,” Gavaskar told the broadcasters at the end of the Perth Test.

Talking about the BGT opener, Bumrah-led India opted to bat first and bundled out for 150 on Day 1. The stand-in captain, however, led the charge with his 5 for 30 leading to Australia getting out for 104. With a 46-run lead, India recovered in style with tons from Yashasvi Jaiswal (161), KL Rahul (77) and Kohli (100*). Eventually, the Aussies folded for 238 in the final innings, to lose by a whopping 295-run margin and concede a 1-0 lead.

BGT: 'Virat Kohli could've a big series,' Former India coach Rahul Dravid issues stern warning to Australia

Indian top-order batter Shubman Gill will likely miss the second Test match against Australia starting next Friday (Dec 6) as the visitors look to extend their lead in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Gill, who missed the Perth Test due to a left thumb fracture is likely to require another two weeks to recover, likely ending his quest to return to the Playing XI for the Adelaide contest. The Indian team led by Jasprit Bumrah took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series having beaten Pat Cummins and Co by 295 runs on Monday.

<h2>Gill likely to miss Adelaide Test</h2>

With the pink-ball Test in running, Gill will face a race against time to be fit for the all-important contest. However, media reports state that he is unlikely to be in the Playing XI due to the extent of the injury. He suffered a thumb injury in the warm-up match against the WACA Simulation side before the Perth Test. In case Gill fails to recover, the Indian team will likely show faith in either Dhruv Jurel or Devdutt Padikkal for the second Test.

While Gill’s absence could be a huge factor, the Indian team will be boosted by the return of skipper Rohit Sharma. He landed in Australia after missing the opening contest due to paternity leave and will be available for the day-night Test match. His availability will likely force either Jurel or Padikkal to drop out with KL Rahul will squeeze into the middle order.

<h2>India to push for a 2-0 lead</h2>

With the second Test set to start on December 6, the Indian team will look to hold on to the momentum heading into the contest. With momentum, the visitors will have the golden opportunity to extend their lead and keep pace for the World Test Championship (WTC) final.

BGT 2024/25: Shubman Gill likely to miss pink-ball Test in Adelaide due to thumb injury - Report

India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal's 161 during the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test was one of the finest innings ever played by a visiting batter in Perth, Australia. It is in fact the highest score by a visiting batter at the new Optus Stadium.

The old West Australia Cricket Association (WACA) was spicier than the Optus stadium but not by any standard the Optus stadium pitch is easier to bat. The same was on display when 17 wickets fell on Day 1 of the Test with Jaiswal getting out for a duck.

The India batter, however, showed great resilience on the dried yet bouncy and difficult pitch while facing arguably one of the best bowling attacks of all time.

Jaiswal, who was just playing his 15th Test, went on to score his fourth Test hundred off 205 balls – only marginally faster than his slowest hundred, which came off 215 balls on his debut against West Indies.

Jaiswal's other two hundreds came in India off less than 160 balls – which shows the batter demonstrated great restraint on his naturally attacking game and curbed his instincts to bat out hard periods of time in Perth.

In total, Jaiswal batted 297 balls in Perth and 211 of them were dot. Most of his runs in Perth – 28 – came from the square leg region – indicating that he let the ball come to him before tucking it away.

As for his boundaries, seven or eight boundaries came from the third-man point-cover region – showing how late he played to score those runs given the bounce on the pitch.

Jaiswal's innings ensured that make-shift opener KL Rahul had enough time to get in the groove as well as the pair put together a 201-run partnership for the opening wicket – the most for India in Australia.

India eventually went on to win the match by 295 runs and skipper Jasprit Bumrah also praised the young batter calling his innings the best so far.

With four more matches to go in the series, India would be hoping for more such mature innings from 22-year-old Jaiswal.

BGT 2024-25: How Yashasvi Jaiswal curbed natural instincts in Perth to score his BEST Test ton

Former England captain-turned-commentator Nasser Hussain lauded Jasprit Bumrah following India's historic win in the Perth Test versus Australia. He, however, pointed out how media coverage was less on Bumrah, whom he regards as the 'best all-format bowler in the world', ahead of the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) opener in Perth. Hussain mentioned that the limelight was more on Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Rohit Sharma (who missed the series opener due to paternity leave).

Under Bumrah, India got bundled out for 150 after opting to bat first in the BGT opener, in Perth, but took a slender 46-run lead following the stand-in captain's 5 for 30. From thereon, tons from Yashasvi Jaiswal (161) and Virat Kohli (100*) set up a mammoth 534-run target for the hosts. Australia eventually folded for 238 in the final innings to lose by a massive 295-run margin.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Hussain was all praise for Bumrah and highlighted how he does the job despite being less in focus. "He has that slower ball, the yorker, the bouncer... I was thinking before the game, he was doing the press conference and I was watching, that all of the focus was on Kohli, and Rohit Sharma not being there, balance of the Indian side, Steve Smith, whether these great players will get runs. And I thought, they don't really talk about Bumrah. Maybe it's (because) he is a bowler. Batters are highlighted so much more." Virat Kohli silenced his critics in style with an unbeaten 100 in the second innings of the Perth Test, which India won by 295 runs to take a 1-0 lead over Australia in the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) opener. After Jasprit Bumrah-led India opted to bat first on Day 1, Kohli fell flat like every other Indian batter and got dismissed for 5. However, after India took a 46-run lead despite getting all-out for 150, Kohli turned it around in the second essay, along with Yashasvi Jaiswal (161), with a fine 100*. Thus, the visitors declared at 487-6, setting a mammoth 534-run target. Eventually, India bundled out Aussies for 238 to win the first Test in Perth. Following Kohli's 81st international century, former cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Matthew Hayden dissected what worked for Kohli&nbsp;after he failed in the first innings in Perth.

Gavaskar told the broadcasters after the end of the Perth Test, "His body was completely relaxed when he came into bat in the second innings. In the first innings, he came out to bat when India had lost two early wickets, he might have been under pressure. In the second innings, I think he gave himself a little more time to play the ball and, apart from the wider stance, I think he allowed himself to play the bounce by being a little bit more upright."

Meanwhile, Hayden opined, "I think Sunny (Sunil Gavaskar) made that point (with a slightly more upright stance). I think it’s an excellent point. The reverse can be said of someone going to India and staying low. I think by being a little more upright, your head position is right — staying on top of the bounce and being able to work the ball around from under your sight. I said from the start that I liked him batting more in line with the ball. I think that’s a good strategy. We saw some classic cases where he was able to work the ball through mid-wicket. You can’t do that batting outside the off-stump. Getting into the line was important."

The former Australian opener added, "I like that mid-wicket boundary that he hit off Hazlewood. That, to me, is not the easiest of shots. I think a straight drive is a little more easy, that’s not easy. Just to open up a little bit and play that shot, that was great. You’re never going to change the fact he is going to try and take the ball early. He is always going to be in front of himself. But, when you know he’s got the timing — when the body movement is right — he starts to play great on drives. When you think about the action of the on-drive, where do you take the ball? Not behind the body, but in front of your body. That’s his strength."

India rode on stand-in captain Bumrah's match figures of 8 for 72, Mohammed Siraj's regular strikes, vital contributions from KL Rahul, debutants Nitish Reddy and Harshit Rana, centurions Jaiswal and Kohli to bounce back in the Perth Test&nbsp;after managing&nbsp;150 on the first day.&nbsp;

The second Test will be played at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, which gets underway on Dec 6. Regular captain Rohit Sharma will return to the playing XI after missing the series opener due to paternity leave.

Australia star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has heaped praise on Indian great Jasprit Bumrah who helped&nbsp; India win the opening contest of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Monday (Nov 25). Bumrah was in fabulous form in the opening contest while he also captained the side in Rohit Sharma’s absence. Bumrah scalped eight wickets in the match and played a key role in Australia’s record defeat on soil.

<h2>Maxwell in awe of Bumrah</h2>

"It almost feels like his bouncer and his length ball are very similar to where his release point is, and it's really hard to pick up the difference between those and the ball always feels like it's coming back into you and he's got the ability to take the ball away, which just makes it extremely difficult. Bumrah is going to go down as potentially the best fast bowler of all time, maybe not with the amount of wickets he takes in every format,” Maxwell said on the Grade Cricketer Podcast.

India beat Australia by 295 runs in the Perth Test which saw the visitors take a 1-0 lead in the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The stand-in Indian skipper was at the centre of the win having picked a five-for in the first innings of the Perth Test. The Mumbai Indians pacer also played a key role in India’s T20 World Cup win earlier in the year and helped end an 11-year drought for the senior ICC trophy.

India men’s cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir is set to return home for a family emergency, hours after India won the opening Birder-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) contest in Perth. According to media reports on Tuesday (Nov 26), Gambhir will fly back to India and is expected to be back Down Under before the second Test match in Adelaide begins on Friday (Dec 6). India won the Perth Test by 295 runs and have a 1-0 lead heading into the pink-ball contest.

<h2>Gambhir to head back to India</h2>

According to Espncricinfo, a prominent cricket website, Gambhir is on his way back to India for a family emergency which will see him stay away from the side for the next few days. He is likely to miss India’s fixture against Prime Minister’s XI, a two-day warm-up fixture, before heading into the Adelaide Test. However, he is unlikely to miss the second BGT contest in Adelaide which starts on Dec 6, giving enough time for a return.

The former India opener has been on the receiving end of some criticism after Rohit Sharma’s side lost to New Zealand 0-3 earlier in November. However, those critics went silent on Monday as India beat Australia in the Perth Test.

Australia have retained faith in the same squad for the second Test match in Adelaide as they try to put behind the disappointment of Perth. In a statement made by head coach Andrew McDonald, the team will look to bounce back and might tweak the Playing XI as Scott Boland and Josh Inglis continue to be part of the travelling contingent. Australia lost the opening Test in Perth by a record 295 runs as they trail the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy by 0-1.

“We’ll assess that as we go along. But as I said, the squad that’s in (Perth), they’ll be there in Adelaide,” McDonald said.

The Aussies are sweating on the fitness of Mitchell Marsh while Marnus Labuschagne’s form is becoming an unwanted headache for the management. He has been struggling for form in the last few months as concerns are raised about his place in the Starting XI. In his last nine Test innings, he has scored in double figures only once. However, McDonald has still backed the Aussie batter to play an important role as they try to attain parity in the five-match Test series.

“I mean, we look at the way he plays and when he’s at his best, and when we’ve seen him at his best, he’s shown great intent at the crease,” he said.

BGT 2024/25: Australia retain faith in same squad for Adelaide Test, head coach Andrew McDonald confirms

Australia skipper Pat Cummins has dismissed the rumours of any kind of divide in the team after the loss in first Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test by 295 runs. Cummins' comments came in response to some snide comments made by teammate Josh Hazlewood after day 3 of play in Perth, Australla.

"You probably have to ask one of the batters that question. I'm sort of relaxing and trying to get a bit of physio and a bit of treatment, and I'm probably looking mostly towards the next Test and what plans we can do against these batters," Hazlewood had told the media after Australia finished day 3 of the Test at 12/3 in chase of record 534.

Hazlewood's comments could be in reference to the failure of Australia's top order across both innings, especially Marnus Labuschagne, who was given some protection as Pat Cummins came out to bat in dying moments of day 3 ahead of him as nightwatchman despite bowling for nearly two days. Both of them, however, went back in the hut the same day.

Cummins, however, was clear that there's no rift in the team and the side remains a close-knit group.

"I don't know what Joshy (Hazlewood) said, but no, not at all (division). There's plenty of times where the batters have dragged us bowlers out of tight situations, and we've done the same. So it's a really tight unit. It's probably one of the tightest teams I've ever played with," Cummins said in contrast to suggestions made by former Aussie cricketer Adam Gilchrist in Englishman Michael Vaughan that there appears to be a divide in the team.

"We really enjoy playing cricket together. We've been through a lot over the last few years, the core group. So no problems there. Everyone gets along really well. So all good," Cummins added.

BGT 2024-25: Rift in Australian team? 'I don't know...,' says Cummins after Hazlewood throws shades at batters

Australia skipper Pat Cummins said there won't be many changes in the side for the second Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test in Adelaide. The comments come despite Australia losing the first Test in Perth on Monday (Nov. 25) by 295 runs.&nbsp;

Australia were clueless against Indian pace attack, especially Jasprit Bumrah, as they squandered advantage on day 1 of the Test after bowling India out for 150 runs.

“I think we will head home for a bit and may assemble in Adelaide a day earlier considering the Test here got over early. We will work on our plans then. At the beginning of this Test, we believed that this is the best team that we could have, and I don’t think there will be too many changes,” said Cummins post-loss.

The Aussie skipper, however, gave due credit to the Indian batters for their second innings effort, which saw the visitors pile up 487/6 before declaring with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli getting hundreds.

“India bowled well on that first day, and that got them back. They then batted well in the second innings. Jaiswal, Rahul and (Virat) did well,” said Cummins.

Australia were set an astronomical target of 534 runs to chase, including the 46 runs lead they had conceded in the first innings. India had bowled the visitors out for a paltry 104 in the first innings, with Bumrah getting a five-for. They were eventually bowled out for 238 on day 4 of the Perth Test.

Cummins was asked about Marnus Labuschagne's place in the team after the batter, who has been struggling this year for runs, managed just five runs across both innings.

“He has been working hard, and yes, he didn’t do that well, but we all know what a threat he can be to bowlers,” noted Cummins.

India now lead the five-Test series 1-0 as they head for the second Test in Adelaide, which starts December 6.
