Ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 edition's commencement, India's stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah has played down concerns regarding Virat Kohli's poor run of form. Kohli has scored only two Test tons since 2020 and had a disastrous run in India's home season, ending with only 191 runs at 21.33 with a solitary fifty. Thus, there are concerns around his form. However, Bumrah feels Kohli is highly confident ahead of the Australia Test series opener and will come good Down Under.&nbsp;

Talking to the press ahead of the Perth Test, which gets underway on Friday (Nov 22), Bumrah said, "I don't have to say anything about Virat Kohli, the batter. He is one of the greats of the game. I don't need to give him any special input. He is the utmost professional. He is one of the leaders. I made my debut under him. He knows what he is doing. Okay, one or two series, here and there, can up and down."

"But, the confidence he has at this moment, I have no doubts about how he has prepared. He is looking to contribute. The signs are ominous, I don't want to jinx it by saying anything else, but he is looking in very good shape,." he added.

Notably, Kohli has an exceptional record in Tests in Australia. In 13 Tests, the former Indian captain has 1,352 runs at an impressive average of 54.08, including six hundreds and four half-centuries.&nbsp;Thus, the 36-year-old will be confident of turning the tides in his favour in the Australia series.&nbsp;

India are without regular captain Rohit Sharma (due to paternity leave) for the five-match Test series opener in Perth. Bumrah-led India will hope for a winning start after being whitewashed by New Zealand in a three-match series at home, in October.

Australia skipper Pat Cummins has dismissed talks of distraction due to the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) mega auction as his side prepares for the opening contest of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India. Speaking on Thursday (Nov 21), Cummins reckons the auctions won’t be a distraction for his side which will coincide with the Test match on Sunday and Monday. According to him, plenty of Australian players have the experience of going under the hammer and won’t find it difficult to cope during the national duties.

<h2>Cummins dismisses talks of distraction</h2>

"Yeah, I think he is there in the auction. I don't think so (it will be a distraction). Dan has flown over there, but he has been here for the whole prep. Done all the meetings, done all the chats, watching it. We came to know that anyway," Cummins told the press in Perth on the eve of the first Test.

Australian players like Usman Khawaja, Mitchell Marsh, Josh Inglis and others part of the Perth Test will be on the auction table on Sunday and Monday in the IPL auctions. The mega bidding event will take place in Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah with host of Indian names also in the mix. Alongside Australian players, Indian names like KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Mohammed Siraj will also test their luck in the auction while in Perth.

<h2>Australia look to end their BGT drought</h2>

Not since the 2014-15 BGT series, have the Aussie lifted the bilateral tournament as they look to end the drought. With India wounded after defeat to New Zealand in home series, Aussies have a golden opportunity to claim the series win in their own backyard. Pat Cummins’s side will hand a debut to Queensland’s Nathan McSweeney who is set to become the first Australia batter in 47 years to open the innings on debut.

BGT 2024/25: Pat Cummins focused on Perth Test despite IPL mega auction, dismisses 'distraction' talks

Ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024/25 edition, India's stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah has stated that the visitors aren't carrying any baggage from their 3-0 whitewash at the hands of New Zealand, last month. India are entering the upcoming BGT on the back of a listless performance versus the Kiwis at home.&nbsp;Thus, they now have a herculean task to beat Australia 4-0 to stand a chance to directly qualify for next year's ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, in June.&nbsp;Bumrah, however, has made it clear that India start afresh and will play positive cricket Down Under.

<h2>'When we won the World Cup, it didn't mean we would become complacent'</h2>

Talking to the reporters ahead of the Perth Test, which gets underway on Friday (Nov 22), Bumrah said, "Even if you win, you start from 0. If you lose, you start from 0. That's the beauty of cricket. When we won the World Cup, it didn't mean we would become complacent in other series. That's how I am looking at. Obviously, we were disappointed and down that we had a tough series last time. But, we are not carrying any baggage. We come with a fresh mindset, and different opposition. And we come to learn from the changes that have happened in the team. We are not carrying any baggage from India. We are trying to be positive and play good cricket."

India had a solid chance to strengthen their position in the WTC standings with a strong performance versus the Black Caps at home. However, NZ became the first team to whitewash India in India in a three-match series. Following the loss, the two-time WTC finalists have to bring their A-game to beat Australia in their own backyard. India have beaten the Aussies in their last two series Down Under, however, Pat Cummins &amp; Co. will come hard at the Indians this time around.&nbsp;

India head into the Perth Test without regular captain Rohit Sharma, who is out on paternity leave. Thus, all eyes will be on Bumrah on how he leads a side low on confidence in the series opener. The first Test starts on Friday (Nov 22).

BGT 2024/25: 'If you lose, you start from 0', Bumrah states India not carrying any baggage from NZ whitewash

Australia's No. 3 Marnus Labuschagne admitted that India would be underconfident heading into the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024/25 opener&nbsp;in Perth on Nov. 22 (Friday), but added that his side would 'never underestimate' them. India are heading into the upcoming BGT on the back of a 0-3&nbsp;whitewash at the hands of New Zealand&nbsp;at home. It became the first instance of a team&nbsp;whitewashing India in a three-match series in their backyard. Thus, the Rohit Sharma-less Indian team would be low on confidence ahead of the Perth Test, however, Labuschagne stated that the hosts will not write India off.

Talking to reporters ahead of the series opener, Labuschagne said, "It's really hard to judge; they played on completely different conditions, spinning conditions. But, I mean, having India come here on the back of a loss at home, that's something that has never happened before. So, I think that's a good thing because they are probably a little bit lower on confidence, not coming off a Test victory, losing to New Zealand 0-3. That's going to do a little bit of damage to their confidence."

"But, at the end of the day, they are a quality line-up, they are one of the best teams in the world. You can never underestimate a team like that," he further opined.

Labuschagne lauded India for standing tall to win the previous BGT Down Under, in 2020/21, despite battling various injury concerns. In addition, India's then captain Virat Kohli returned home (due to paternity leave) and the side was also 0-1&nbsp;down after losing the first Test in Adelaide (where they were bundled out for 36 in their second essay). Yet, a second-stringed Ajinkya Rahane-led side rose to the occasion, with many youngsters performing on all cylinders, to stun Australia on their home soil.

In this regard, the 30-year-old Labuschagne added,&nbsp;"That's what happened in 2021. The likes of Natarajan played. Siraj got his first crack in Australia. Washington Sundar played. Shubman Gill played those last couple of games. But, they were a quality line-up. They have shown that over a period of time you can't ever underestimate the depth of Indian cricket. Anyone who gets the opportunity to play for India has done a lot of hard work to get into the side. To get into the team, you have to play a good player."

Labuschagne ended as the highest run-getter when the last BGT was held in Australia. The right-hander returned with 426 runs, with one hundred and two fifties.

India, on the other hand, will be without regular captain Rohit Sharma (due to paternity leave) whereas No. 3 batter Shubman Gill is also expected to&nbsp;miss out due to a thumb injury&nbsp;for the Perth Test. In Rohit's absence, Jasprit Bumrah will lead the side.

India will be desperate to win three back-to-back Test series in Australia, however, they would know that Pat Cummins-led Australia would come hard at them.

BGT 2024/25: 'They're low on confidence, but...', Labuschagne shrugs off India's poor form ahead of Perth Test

Australia have always been a 'in your face' kind of team with an aggressive style of play and sledging as well. The crowd, especially in Sydney, isn't forgiving as well, which makes it even harder&nbsp;for the visiting teams. Their rivalry against India is well documented, and with India also now a team that gives back as much as it gets, many sour incidents have taken place between two teams.

As India get ready for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), which starts on November 22 in Perth, here below are the top controversies over the years from the India vs. Australia Tests:

Harbhajan-Symonds in Monkeygate

The 2008 Sydney Test would always be remembered for the drama involving Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds. During the match, Symonds accused Harbhajan of calling him 'monkey - a racial slur given Symonds heritage,' but the Indian spinner denied saying so. Harbhajan was banned for three Tests.&nbsp;The punishment was reduced after India threatened to pull out of the tour, but the incident left tensions between the two sides, which lasted for long.

Virat Kohli flipping Sydney crowd

A young Virat Kohli was nothing short of a dragon breathing ffire,and the batter held nothing back against the oopposition, or in this instance - against the crowd. After hearing abuse from the Sydney crowd on the tour of 2012 - Kohli decided to give it back and showed his middle finger to the crowd - an act that was criticised a lot and played very much by the Aussie media as well - leaving the two sides with palpable tension.

Steve Smith's Brainfade

Steve Smith scored three hundreds on Australia tour of India in 2017, but he'll be best remembered for the 'brainfade' moment on the tour.&nbsp;On a Bengaluru pitch in the second Test, which was keeping low, Smith was given LBW by the on-filed umpire, and he looked up to the dressing room, seeking help on taking the review. Indian skipper Kohli was furious, and the umpire sent the batter off immediately. Smith later admitted to the mistake, but the damage was done.

Shouldergate

Australia's 2017 tour of India saw another controversy when Glenn Maxwell mocked Virat Kohli's shoulder injury during the third Test in Ranchi. Kohli clutched his shoulder while fielding in Australia's first iinnings, after stopping a ball at the boundary. The injury was serious enough to keep the Indian skipper out for a part of the match.&nbsp;

Maxwell, who had scored the hundred in fthe firstinnings for the visitors, mocked Kohli by clutching to his shoulder after stopping a ball, Kohli, however, gave it back by doing the same in Australia's second innings after David Warner's dismissal.

Mohammed Siraj faces racism

India pacer Mohammed Siraj faced racial slurs from the hostile Sydney crowd on the tour of 2020-21. India skipper Ajinkya Rahane refused to leave the ground until the six guilty fans were ejected from the stands for calling Siraj 'brown monkey.' The incident once again added bitterness to an already tense rivalry.

BGT 2024-25: From Monkeygate to Siraj facing racism - Top controversies from India vs Australia Tests

The stage is set for India vs Australia Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, with the first Test set to begin Friday (Nov. 22) in Perth, Australia. India emerged victorious on their last two Down Under tours, but this time the task at hand seems tougher than ever.

With no Mohammed Shami for probably the entire series, no Rohit Sharma for the first Test, an out-of-form Virat Kohli, and most probably no Shubman Gill in Perth, India look underdogs. Their recent 0-3 Test series loss at home against New Zealand before coming to Australia isn't putting much confidence in India's chances either.

India, nonetheless, will be looking at their last tour in 2020-21, when almost a second-string side beat Australia to win their second consecutive series Down Under. They'd be hoping for something like that on the current tour as well, and here are the five players who can shape the outcome of this series in India's favour:

Rishabh Pant

India's boy wonder in Australia - Pant has scored 624 runs at an average of 62.40 with one hundred and two fifties (97 and 89 not out) in Australia in just 12 innings of seven Tests. He'll be a key batter for India if they were to win for the third consecutive time Down Under and with Kohli being out of form, the onus of middle order lies on Pant more than ever.

Yashasvi Jaiswal

The opener has been one of the breakthrough Test players for India ever since he made his debut in 2023. The southpaw has scored 1,407 runs in 14 Tests he has played so far at an average of 56 with three tons and eight fifties. Australia is going to be a true test of his skills and concentration. His contributions up the order are going to be the most crucial for India, which has a middle order without Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara.

KL Rahul

Rahul announced his arrival with a sublime 110 in Sydney on the tour of 2014-15 but has not lived up to the talent he has ever since. The batter has floated up and down the order in his 53 Tests, batting as high as an opener and as low as number six. He's set to open the innings in Perth with Jaiswal in Rohit's absence, and his performance in the series could very well define his future Test career.

Jasprit Bumrah

The undisputed pace leader of India and arguably the best bowler in the world currently, Bumrah holds the key for India if they are to win on pacy and bouncy Aussie pitches. He won't have Shami for support, and that makes his presence ever so important for India. For India to win, Bumrah doesn't really have any other&nbsp;option but to get going from ball one in Perth.

Akash Deep

The pacer has impressed with his skills in the five Tests he has played so far. He'll be an important part of India's pace department, and his ability to hit the deck hard to get the extra bounce can be very useful on the bouncing pitches. The series could make him India's preferred number three pacer behind Bumrah and Shami and his performance on the tour can help India keep the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

His contributions up the order are going to be the most crucial for India, which has a middle order without Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara. KL Rahul Rahul announced his arrival with a sublime 110 in Sydney on the tour of 2014-15 but has not lived up to the talent he has ever since. The batter has floated up and down the order in his 53 Tests, batting as high as an opener and as low as number six. He's set to open the innings in Perth with Jaiswal in Rohit's absence, and his performance in the series could very well define his future Test career. Jasprit Bumrah The undisputed pace leader of India and arguably the best bowler in the world currently, Bumrah holds the key for India if they are to win on pacy and bouncy Aussie pitches. He won't have Shami for support, and that makes his presence ever so important for India. For India to win, Bumrah doesn't really have any other option but to get going from ball one in Perth. Akash Deep The pacer has impressed with his skills in the five Tests he has played so far.

BGT 2024-25: Five key India players who can shape the outcome of series

Australia batter Marnus Labuschagne wants to put India bowlers under pressure by playing the long game. Labuschagne is willing to take a feather from India batter Cheteshwar Pujara's cap, who played 1258 deliveries on the 2018-19 tour, which the visitors eventually won.

"It's going to be important for all of us," Labuschagne said while talking to reporters on Tuesday (Nov. 19) ahead of the Perth Test, which starts November 22. "I think the way we play, we're at our best when we're playing the long game."&nbsp;

"We understand that getting them back for their second and third spells, putting them under pressure and letting them come to us, and us putting pressure back on them through overs in the field and time in the game, especially over a five-Test series, that's really important."

"Because as you get into the third, fourth, fifth Test, if they're trying to play the same team, and those bowlers are rolling into 100, 150, 200 overs by the third Test, it's going to make a big difference in the series," added Labuschagne.

India's pace attack is also a bit inexperienced this time, with only Jasprit Bumrah being an experienced campaigner. Apart from Bumrah, India have Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana in the pace department.&nbsp;

Mohammed Shami, one of India's premium pacers, has not been included in the squad owing to match fitness issues. Australia, however, would be wary of India's attack nonetheless, as proven by the last tour's result, when almost a second-string team handed the home team a drubbing.

After Perth, India play the day-night second Test in Adelaide from December 6-10. The third Test will be played at the Gabba in Brisbane from December 14-18 before the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from December 26-30. The last and final Test will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) from January 3-7.&nbsp;

BGT 2024-25: 'At our best when...,' Marnus Labuschagne reveals Aussie strategy against India pacers

Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden revealed that MS Dhoni had once identified Jasprit Bumrah's abilities as a 'potential captain'. Hayden, who played under former India captain Dhoni for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL, stated that Dhoni had mentioned Bumrah's leadership qualities. Notably, Bumrah is set to lead India in the first Test versus Australia in Perth, i.e. the series opener of the&nbsp;upcoming 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Bumrah will lead India for the second time in Tests after regular captain Rohit Sharma is out of action due to paternity leave.

Hayden, a Channel 7 commentator, responded to India Today's query in a virtual presser and said, "From what I understand, not knowing Bumrah on the field as such, not even having played against him, but coming from a great friend and mentor of mine in MS Dhoni, he’s got leadership qualities as well. In fact, he was touted by MS many years ago as a potential captain."

He further opined, "Off the field, I have spent a large amount of time with Jasprit, he’s intelligent, well-organised and constructive in his comments on the game, which for me reveals he’s got good leadership instincts, and they will come to the fore captaining a very excited and extremely optimistic team coming here, and I’m sure he will be up for it."

Bumrah has led India once in Tests, versus England in Edgbaston in July 2022. Despite a healthy lead, India went on to lose the match by seven wickets.

Hayden lauded Bumrah for stepping up for India in crunch situations. He mentioned that despite not playing a lot like Rohit and Virat Kohli, Bumrah has&nbsp;played like a “stalwart” of Indian cricket and praised him for his bowling in the Perth Test in 2018, which India lost by 146 runs.&nbsp;

The former opener stated, "When you think about Jasprit Bumrah, you think he’s probably played 80 to 100 Tests. It just seems like he’s been a stalwart of Indian cricket across all three formats. The reality is he has played 40 Tests and that’s a lot of cricket, but it’s not Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and other names that have played a lot more amongst the stalwarts of Indian cricket."

"Bumrah will lead with the ball just like Pat Cummins. He took five wickets in Perth in a losing cause. He is going to lead from the front, the better he bowls, the better his team gets into a position of dominance, and he can expose many players because of his immense talent,” Hayden added.

India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has provided a key update on Shubman Gill’s availability for the Perth Test as he faces&nbsp;race against time to be fit for the opening contest of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Gill, having injured his left thumb during a warm-up match against the WACA simulation side on Saturday (Nov 16), is still in frame for the opener. According to Morkel, a call will be taken on Gill’s availability on the morning of Day 1 as Indian fans will have their fingers crossed.

"Shubman is improving every day. Obviously picked up a nasty blow in that warm-up game. With him, it's going to be a day-to-day sort of process. Fingers crossed for that improvement, I think we will wait to make a call on the morning of the Test match," Morkel told the press in Perth on Wednesday.

India will face a huge crisis in the batting order in case Gill is not available, as the World Test Championship (WTC) runners-up are already without skipper Rohit Sharma, who is on paternity leave. According to the former South Africa pacer, Gill is recovering well and is still in the frame for a place in the Playing XI for the Perth Test which starts on Friday (Nov. 22).

BGT: Morne Morkel provides key update on Gill's fitness as batter faces race against time for Perth Test

Ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024/25 edition, which gets underway in Perth on Nov 22 (Friday), Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood expressed his relief over Cheteshwar Pujara's absence in the India squad. Pujara last played for India during the WTC 2023 final at The Oval, London. Since then, he has been out of the India Test lineup due to his ordinary run. Pujara, however, was a beast in Australia during India's last two visits, hence, is absence has pleased Hazlewood.&nbsp;

Prior to the BGT 2024/25 opener, Hazlewood said at a press conference, "I am happy that Cheteshwar Pujara is not here. He is obviously someone who bats time and spends a lot of time at the crease and makes you earn his wicket every time. Has done really well in Australia on previous tours. I mean there are always first-class young players coming into the team. There is so much pressure to perform in the Indian team. With so many guys nipping at the hills all the time, so overall the playing XI is a mix of unbelievable players. So it does not really matter, they are all big players."

Pujara has an exceptional record in Australia. The right-hander, a veteran of 103 Tests, has scored 993 runs in 11 games against the Aussies, in Australia, at an average of 47.28. During India's maiden Test series triumph in Australia, in 2018/19, he ended with 521 runs&nbsp;at an average of 74.42 to be adjudged the Player of the Series. Even in the 2020/21 series win for India Down Under, he played an integral part with 273 runs, along with three fifties. Overall, he has&nbsp;five half-centuries and three centuries in Australia.&nbsp;

This time around, Shubman Gill is expected to do well for India at the No. 3 spot. He has succeeded Pujara at the slot since the veteran's ouster and done a good job so far. It will be interesting to see if he can replicate Pujara's feat Down Under. Ahead of the Perth Test, Gill is running against time to be fit following a thumb injury in the run-up to the BGT 2024/25 edition.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has urged Nitish Kumar Reddy to step up as he gears up for a potential debut in the Perth Test starting on Friday (Nov 22). The encounter&nbsp;will be the first of the five Border-Gavaskar Trophy contests as India struggle with a series of name absentees. According to Shastri, Nitish will have to imitate Shardul Thakur who was an unsung hero in India’s Test series win Down Under in 2020-21.

<h2>Shastri urges Nitish to step up</h2>

"Nitish Reddy will have to do a job like Shardul Thakur did as the fourth seamer," Shastri told the International Cricket Council. "He can bat a bit, give the bowlers a little bit of respite so that they can bowl in short spellsâ€æand be someone who will have to be good for those eight to 10 overs that he bowls."

In what was Shardul’s first competitive red-ball match on foreign soil, he scored 67 runs in the first innings and backed that with seven wickets in the match in the historic Gabba Test. While Rishabh Pant stole the headlines for taking India home under Ajinkya Rahane’s captaincy, Shardul’s efforts with bat and ball were the big difference-maker for the visitors.

With key names like Rohit Sharma (paternity leave) and Shubman Gill (thumb injury) missing, Nitish is expected to get his debut in the red-ball format. He has already represented India in the T20I series against Bangladesh in October and will look to make an instant impact during the upcoming BGT.

BGT 2024/25: Former coach Ravi Shastri urges Nitish Reddy to step up in potential Perth Test debut

Former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar is against KL Rahul opening the innings in the first Test between India and Australia, in Perth. Ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 edition&nbsp;opener, which gets underway on Friday (Nov 22), there are chances of Rahul returning to the opening slot in absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma. However, Manjrekar feels it won't be the best idea as Rahul is low on confidence and the team won't benefit having someone like him batting at the top.&nbsp;

<h2>'It’s not like KL Rahul as an opening option is setting the stage on fire'</h2>

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Manjrekar said, "It’s not like KL Rahul as an opening option is setting the stage on fire. Going by the reality, KL Rahul currently you can see, you’ve got to feel for him, I love him as a player the kind of talent he has. He looks a bit down on confidence and you don’t want someone like him batting at the top of the order because much of the tempo of the innings is set at the start number 1,2 and 3."

Rahul didn't have a great run in India's home season, where they hosted Bangladesh in two Tests and New Zealand in a three-match series. Rahul scored a magnificent 101, batting at No. 6, against South Africa in Centurion, however, he has not been consistent here there on. In the home season, he scored a solitary fifty (68), versus the Bangla Tigers, and was removed from the playing XI for the last two Tests versus the Kiwis.&nbsp;

Since 2022, Rahul has 514 runs in 12 Tests, with an average of 25.7 in 21 innings with three half-centuries and a ton. While he has opened in Tests before taking over the lower-middle order slot, his numbers as an opener in Australia are not impressive. The 32-year-old has only 183 runs in&nbsp;seven innings at an average of 26.14, with one century.

Manjrekar further added, "I’m going by KL Rahul for the work he’s done down the order and very recently in South Africa. He was batting at number six with a softer Kookaburra ball and if he has to bat with the tailenders, I feel he will be terrific where he’s got the big game as well. So I see KL is better used and has more chances of KL Rahul adding value to the team at that position."

Apart from Rohit, India's batting order is also likely to be without Shubman Gill -- who is recovering from a thumb injury ahead of the Perth Test.

He was batting at number six with a softer Kookaburra ball and if he has to bat with the tailenders, I feel he will be terrific where he’s got the big game as well. So I see KL is better used and has more chances of KL Rahul adding value to the team at that position." Apart from Rohit, India's batting order is also likely to be without Shubman Gill -- who is recovering from a thumb injury ahead of the Perth Test.

As India and Australia gear up for the opening Test in the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Travis Head warned about the terrifying nature of the Perth pitch. Both India and Australia are set to lock horns at the Optus Stadium in Western Australia from Friday (Nov 22) as Head opened up on the nature of the pitch which could be challenging after Day 3 of the contest. According to the Aussie southpaw, batters could find it difficult to score runs if it starts having cracks.

<h2>Head warns about Perth pitch</h2>

"There are parts of this wicket that can be terrifying, simple as that. I think everyone's talked about that. Depending on where the wicket goes to on day three, four and five, it can be challenging,” Head said while speaking to the Unplayable Podcast.

Having been India’s nightmare in the last two years, Head averages 40 at the venue and was one run short of a century against West Indies here two summers ago. In 2023, Head twice came to rock Team India having scored 137 in the ODI World Cup final on Nov 19 and amassing 163 in the first innings of the World Test Championship (WTC) final.

The batter also supported Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s decision to skip the Perth Test for paternity leave. Rohit will land in Australia ahead of the Adelaide Test having been blessed with a baby boy over the weekend.

BGT 2024/25: Travis Head worried about TERRIFYING Perth pitch, says 'it can be challenging'

Ace Australia spinner Nathan Lyon has said that India batter Virat Kohli, along with Steve Smith, is one of the best batters in the last decade. The statement comes as Kohli's form is causing concerns for India ahead of the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), which starts Friday (Nov. 22) in Perth, Australia.

“Overall, look at his record. You don’t write off champions. I’ve got nothing but respect for Virat. I want to get him out, there’s no point in hiding behind that, but it’s challenging. It’s been pretty amazing competing against him for so many times,” Lyon said while talking to cricket.com.au.

“Him and Smithy (Steve Smith) are probably the best two batters in our last era of this last decade,” the off-spinner added.

Lyon also put aside India's recent 0-3 loss in the home Test series against New Zealand and said that one can never write off India.

“They’re dangerous all the time. They’re a side full of superstars. They’ve got so much experience, but talented youth as well and you can never write off that,” said the veteran bowler.

India have not lost a Test series against Australia since conceding the away BGT in 2014-15. In the last 10 years, India have won all four Test series played against Australia – two away and two at home.

India, however, have a lot to ponder ahead of the first Test as they will be without regular skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.

Rohit is away after the recent birth of his second child and will be available from the second Test, while Gill was injured during practice and is not expected to play in Perth. In Rohit's absence, vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah will lead the side.

After Perth, India play the day-night second Test in Adelaide from December 6-10. The third Test will be played at the Gabba in Brisbane from December 14-18 before the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from December 26-30. BGT 2024-25: 'It’s challenging...,' says Nathan Lyon on Virat Kohli's form ahead of Perth Test

Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson has urged Pat Cummins &amp; Co&nbsp;against engaging with Virat Kohli in heated on-field exchanges in the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024/25 edition, in Australia. Ahead of the first Test, which gets underway on Friday (Nov 22) in Perth, Watson&nbsp;suggested that Kohli might pose less of a threat if he is left undisturbed by the Australians. Kohli is heading into this year's BGT following a poor run in India's home season. In India's five Tests at home, against Bangladesh (two) and New Zealand (three) respectively, the right-hander managed only 191 runs at an average of 21.33 with a solitary fifty. Since 2020, Kohli has slammed only two hundreds in the purest format.

Talking about Kohli, Watson said in the Willow Talk Podcast, "The one thing that I know of Virat is... because the fire burns so brightly and deep inside him, the intensity he brings to every ball that he is engaged in a game has been superhuman. But, there have been in recent times where moments in this career that fire has started to go out because it is just so hard to maintain that intensity in every moment he is involved in a game. And, that is where Australia have to leave him alone and hope he doesn't bring the intensity – nine out of 10 intensity – to every ball," he further opined.

Watson recalled Kohli's past success in Australia and added, "When he has succeeded in Australia, it’s because he has been completely engaged with everything happening on the field. Every ball, every moment — he is fiercely intense, and that focus blocks out all distractions. That’s when he’s at his absolute best. If there’s noise around him and that intensity isn’t there, you’ll see a lesser version of Virat. From an Australian perspective, let’s hope we get that version of him."

In Australia, Kohli averages an impressive&nbsp;54.08 and has amassed 1,352 runs in 13 Tests, including six hundreds and four half-centuries. For India, they will be hoping for Kohli's return to form from the series opener. The visitors are already without regular captain Rohit Sharma (out on paternity leave).

Don't poke Virat Kohli: Former Aussie all-rounder warns Pat Cummins & Co ahead of BGT 2024/25 opener

Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar has backed Virat Kohli to come good in the upcoming 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which gets underway on Nov. 22 in Australia. Kohli has had a torrid run in whites during India's home season, where they hosted Bangladesh and New Zealand for two- and three-Test series respectively. He only managed 192 runs&nbsp;in five&nbsp;Tests, with a solitary 50,&nbsp;and has hit only two centuries in the format since 2020. Gavaskar, however, feels that Kohli will be extra confident playing in Australia, where he has 1,352 runs in 13 Tests and averages an impressive 54.08 including six hundreds and four half-centuries.

<h2>'He'll feel that extra bit of confidence'</h2>

Ahead of the BGT opener&nbsp;in Perth, Gavaskar said on Star Sports,&nbsp;"Because he hasn't got runs against New Zealand, he'll be very, very hungry. Even in that Adelaide Test match, where in the second innings we got all out for 36, in the first innings, Kohli got 70 plus, if I recall correctly, before being run out. He's consistently performed at Adelaide, so it's a familiar ground for him. And before Adelaide, it's Perth, where he played one of the finest Test centuries in 2018-19. A terrific hundred. Having performed on these grounds, he'll feel that extra bit of confidence. Of course, you need a bit of luck at the start, but if he gets off to a good start, he will get big runs."

Kohli played only one Test during India's last tour of Australia, in 2020/21. He played the first Test, in Adelaide, before leaving for India due to paternity leave. He had a memorable tour in 2014/15, slamming 692 runs (second-most) in eight innings with four centuries.&nbsp;

Given India will be without regular captain Rohit Sharma for the Perth Test, Kohli will have to mentor the Indian batting line-up single-handedly. Meanwhile, Rohit is expected to join the Indian squad before the second Test, in Adelaide.

BGT 2024/25: Gavaskar feels out-of-form Virat Kohli will be 'very, very hungry' for runs in marquee series

Former India coach Rahul Dravid thinks that India's top four batters would have to soak much of the pressure if they were to win the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in Australia. The first Test between the two sides starts November 22 in Perth.

"Runs on the top will be important. Now whether it comes from one, two or three or four, it doesn't really matter. You're going to need one of that top four or two of the top four to have a great series. That really helps in Australia. With the Kookaburra ball and those conditions, if you can get through that initial period and have your top four soak in a lot of that period, it really allows your lower order to be able to control and dominate those games," said Dravid while talking to ESPNCrininfo recently.

The former India number three also backed Shubman Gill to come through at the same position where he and Cheteshwar Pujara played some of the brilliant Test innings for India.

"Well, they've got Shubman Gill, who is a terrific player. He's had some great success in Australia the last time. Everyone talks about Rishabh's 80 [89] and rightly so, but I think Shubman got 91 to set the game up on that fifth morning. So no, he's a fine, fine player, he's a great kid, and he's learning. Bats differently, slightly, to me and Pujara, but still a very, very good player," he added.

BGT 2024-25: 'To be able to control...,' Former head coach Rahul Dravid's advice for India to win in Australia

Australia skipper Pat Cummins is ready to complete the set as he gears up for the Test series against India with the opening Test in Perth starting on Friday (Nov 22). Cummins who helped Australia win the World Test Championship (WTC) final and the ODI World Cup final in 2023, is yet to win a Test series against India. However, he is now ready to tick the box with Australia sitting in pole position to reach back-to-back WTC finals.

<h2>Cummins ready to tick off another box</h2>

"It's kind of the one big thing that I want to tick off," Cummins said ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener in Perth. "Particularly winning at home. Most Australians, me included, expect us to do well whenever we play at home. We've lost the last two series against them, so this is a big one."

Cummins was named captain of the Australian side in December 2021 and has been impressive during his stint leading them to a 4-0 Ashes win followed by a series of success. However, he is yet to be victorious in a Test series against India, with his only previous attempt resulting in a 1-2 defeat while in India in 2023.

With India recently struggling and heading into the BGT on the back of a 0-3 defeat to New Zealand, Australia will look to capitlaise on their wounded opponents. To add more worries for the Indian team, skipper Rohit Sharma is out of the squad owing to paternity leave while Shubman Gill stays out with a thumb problem. Nitish Reddy is expected to get his debut for the Perth Test with Abhimanyu Easwaran not part of the plans for the Perth encounter.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25: Full schedule, match timings, squads - All you need to know

Australian batter Travis Head has backed India's regular captain Rohit Sharma for opting out of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opening Test, which kicks off on Nov. 22 in Perth, due to paternity leave. On Nov. 15 (Friday), Rohit and his wife Ritika Sajdeh were blessed with their second child. Thus, Hitman has informed the BCCI of not being available for the first Test and will join the Indian squad prior to the second Test in Adelaide. Head has backed the Indian captain for being with his family and stated that he 'would have done the same'.

Head opined on Rohit's absence and told the press on the sidelines of Australia's training in Perth, "Hundred per cent, I support Rohit's decision. I would have done the same in the same situation. We sacrifice a lot of things as a cricketer. We do live a very privileged life and we do also get looked after. But also on the flip side we keep missing important milestones. So, ya, I would do the same thing if I was in his position, you do not get that time back. Hopefully, he returns at some stage in this series."

India's tour of Australia has commenced with several issues. KL Rahul got injured in the training camp, whereas Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the opening Test&nbsp;due to a thumb injury. While Rahul has recovered, Gill is set to miss the series opener. With Rohit and Gill not in the playing XI, India's batting lineup looks under a lot of pressure before the series opener. Head, however, feels one cannot 'rule out any Indian team'. In the 2020/21 tour, India dealt with several injuries, whereas&nbsp;then captain Virat Kohli returned home after the first Test due to paternity leave but still managed to overcome a 0-1&nbsp;deficit to win 2-1.

Thus, Head hasn't written India off and said, "If you look at our history, you would not rule out any Indian team. Last two trips, they had injuries, they have doubts, people have questioned them, but they have pulled out good performances. Whoever they play, it is going to be a strong team."

I would've done the same: Travis Head backs Rohit Sharma's decision to skip Perth Test for paternity leave

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh took a sly dig at Indian cricket fans for changing sides too quickly but backed Sunil Gavaskar’s opinion on why Jasprit Bumrah should captain India in all five Tests against Australia, regardless of Rohit Sharma’s situation.

Following Gavaskar’s comments on why India should have one captain throughout the Border-Gavaskar Trophy that irked plenty of fans, including Rohit's wife, Ritika, Harbhajan seconded&nbsp;the idea following the uniformity in decision-making from management.&nbsp;

During a chat with India Today publication earlier this month, Gavaskar said should Rohit miss the first, which later got confirmed, Bumrah should captain the side, and upon returning, Rohit can resume duty as a player.

Meanwhile, Bhajji, who played with Rohit in the Indian Team and IPL alongside Bumrah, noted that in any way, the fans would change sides regardless of the results. He said if India wins the Perth Test, a section of cricket fans would defend why Bumrah should continue for the remainder of the series, and in another case, if India loses the first match or even the series under Rohit and Bumrah, another section of fans would argue why India should bring back Kohli as the Test skipper.

“If you win the first two Tests, then all Indians would want Bumrah to remain as captain. On the contrary, if India loses both of those games, they would want Rohit to return. We change sides very quickly. I'm not talking about Sunny sir here; I'm talking about the general public,” Harbhajan said during a chat with broadcaster Jatin Sapru on his YouTube channel.&nbsp;

“I feel it's a great suggestion to have one captain for the entire series. That would be better.”

“If India loses, nobody will question it. However, if India wins and Rohit returns for the subsequent matches and then the team lose, that will spark a whole different scenario. But if India loses under both Rohit and Bumrah, they might want Virat Kohli as captain,” Harbhajan said.

However, when asked about his thoughts on Gavaskar’s comments, Harbhajan said it’s not a bad idea.&nbsp;

“It might not be a bad idea. There shouldn't be any problem as well because Bumrah has the ability to lead a team,” he continued.&nbsp;

‘That would be better’ – Harbhajan seconds Gavaskar’s opinion on Bumrah leading in all five Tests vs Australia

Cricket Australia (CA) has allowed assistant coach Daniel Vettori to leave the Perth Test against India starting November 22 midway for the IPL 2025 mega auction, scheduled between the first game on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Vettori, SunRisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) coach, will fly alongside Justin Langer (Lucknow Super Giants) and Ricky Ponting (Punjab Kings), also part of the commentary team with Channel Seven for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024.

In a rare instance, Vettori, highly valued by players and CA administrators, holds three coaching positions with different teams across multiple setups. While he works as an assistant coach with the Australian Team across all formats, the former New Zealand captain is also a full-time head coach of an IPL franchise while serving in the same capacity at Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred.

"We are very supportive of Dan's role as Head Coach of SunRisers Hyderabad," an Australia team spokesperson said. "Dan will complete final preparation for the first Test before attending the IPL auction. He will then be with team for the remainder of the Border Gavaskar Trophy."

Meanwhile, prioritising the IPL auction over Test cricket and scheduling the auction in Saudi Arabia in between the India-Australia Test is a sign of things to come.

Although Vettori had previously skipped national duty for franchise commitment, having done it during the Pakistan series last year, it’s the first time he will leave midway through a Test to attend the IPL auction.&nbsp;

The CA, however, has advertised for a new full-time national pace bowling coach, filling in for Vettori should he miss future action.

<h2>Vettori prepares AUS at WACA</h2>

Following Team India’s practice conclusion at the centre wicket at WACA in Perth, Australia resumed training, with Vettori on deck with the BGT-bound squad on Monday (Nov 18). He worked closely with the bowling unit while also throwing left-arm orthodox bowls to batters, preparing batters to face Ravindra Jadeja.

Lachlan Stevens, CA’s national development coach, who coached Australia-A against India-A in recently concluded two unofficial Tests, alongside Australia’s Under-19 team, will link up with the Test squad in Perth, filling in for Vettori when he departs.

Australia allow Daniel Vettori to miss Perth Test coaching duties for IPL 2025 mega auction

Virat Kohli and Mitchell Johnson are two fiery characters, former on-field rivals and perhaps among the best in their domains to represent their countries. Though one is now retired and the other, aged 36, probably playing his last Australian tour, are still talked about for their rivalry in the famous 2014/15 BGT, which the Aussies won for the last time since.

Virat and then Australia captain Steve Smith had a bumper series, with both surpassing 650 runs in four Tests, hitting four centuries each; however, there was more to that. Johnson and Kohli's face-off was one of the most intriguing battles, with fans, broadcasters and media equally invested.

Johnson, however, admitted enjoying going up against Kohli in that series, revealing the real reason behind doing that.

"I had a well-publicised personal rivalry with Kohli. We had many interactions on the field and I enjoyed it. While I didn’t know him off the field, on the field we probably played the game in a similar way – taking the game on and not backing down," Johnson wrote in his column for ‘The West Australian’.&nbsp;

"Some don’t like that style of cricket and prefer there’s no chat with the opposition, but I enjoyed that part of the game. I would become frustrated during some of our battles, but I also enjoyed that he kept coming at me. It’s always a nice feeling to get one of the best out, and likewise, I’m sure he enjoyed taking me down and hitting me for a four or a six," he continued.

<h2>When Kohli riled up&nbsp;Johnson</h2>

Meanwhile, Johnson remised one of the incidents that flared up the rivalry, mentioning how Virat’s comments after a day’s play at the MCG annoyed the Aussie quick.&nbsp;

It all began when Johnson threw a ball towards the stumps during day two of the third Test, hitting Kohli on the body, who tried ducking it initially. Though Johnson revealed his purpose in doing that was to hit the stumps and not harm Kohli, it led to a heated glare between the two.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Most of our differences stemmed from the Boxing Day Test in 2014 when a ball I threw hit him on the body. I was legitimately trying to run him out, but he didn’t like what I did. He made some comments in the media that night about having no respect for me as a player, which annoyed me," Johnson wrote.&nbsp;

"The goal from our point of view was generally to get Kohli riled up as soon as he came out to bat and take his focus away from his skills. Get him annoyed and get him playing a big shot early,” he added.

Although Australia almost won that psychological battle against him as Kohli played some unnecessary shots, leading to him finding an edge only for the fielders to drop him, the Indian batting star stood tall in the end, scoring a magnificent 169 and winning this encounter against Johnson.&nbsp;

"In that Test match at the MCG, we got him off guard early and had him playing at a ball he didn’t need to in frustration and, unfortunately, we dropped him on not many. He then focused and harnessed his energy and piled on the runs – all 169 of them," Johnson recalled.

Meanwhile, Kohli will be back in action for the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, starting with the Perth Test on November 22.

BGT: When Virat Kohli riled up Mitchell Johnson with his comments on ‘not respecting him’

Team India will be without their star batters, regular captain Rohit Sharma and new number three Shubman Gill, for the Perth Test against Australia starting November 22. While Rohit confirmed his unavailability for the first BGT Test due to personal reasons, Gill will be out with a broken thumb. The visitors, however, have identified their replacements for the series opener, with reports of Harshit Rana making his Test debut at the Optus Stadium also doing rounds.

India was jolted with a double blow on Sunday (Nov 17), when Rohit and Gill were declared unavailable for selection for the first Test. Though the management will play KL Rahul at the top alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, sources close to the information informed Times of India (TOI) of Devdutt Padikkal playing at number.

Padikkal was part of the India-A squad that played two shadow matches against Australia-A, losing both, with reserve players and potential Test hopefuls pressing their cases for Team India's return. Though most players failed to impress the selectors, including India-A captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Padikkal and Sai Sudharsan were two names tipped to link with the main squad for the five-match Test series.

Following Gill’s setback (who suffered a thumb injury while fielding during India’s WACA simulation game), the selectors and team management asked Padikkal to stay as cover, with the reports admitting that he might play at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

"He (Padikkal) is likely to bat at the No. 3 spot now," a source close to the information said in a chat with TOI.

<h2>Rana set for Test debut</h2>

In Rohit’s absence, ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah will lead India in the first Test in Perth. Considering the conditions on offer, with steep bounce and carry being prime parameters, Harshit Rana, who impressed everyone, including head coach Gautam Gambhir, with his performance in the simulation game, might get his maiden Test cap.&nbsp;

India’s pace attack for the first game could consist of Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep Singh and Harshit Rana, with one of the three spin-bowling all-rounders (Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar) retaining the number seven spot. Though fellow all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy might get a game sometime in this marquee Test series, four-seamers could highlight India’s bowling attack for the opener.

Meanwhile, Rana made headlines with his star performances for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024, picking 19 wickets and helping his team lift the trophy for the third time.&nbsp;

India identify Shubman Gill’s replacement for Perth Test, Harshit Rana set for BGT debut - Report

Former Australia skipper Tim Paine thinks that Gautam Gambhir isn't a good fit as a coach for the Indian cricket team. The comments come as both sides get ready for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy which gets underway in less than a week's time. Paine also cited Ravi Shastri's example to support his argument. It was under Shastri that India won their last two Test series in Australia.

“Their last two series wins out here they had Ravi Shastri who was fantastic. He created a great environment, the players were energised, they played with passion, he sold them the dream and motivated them in a really light-hearted enjoyable way," Paine said while talking on SEN Radio.

“They (India) have gone to a new coach now that is really prickly, really competitive -- and that not to say that's not a good thing and a good way to coach -- but my concern is that it's not a great fit for the Indian cricket team.

BGT 2024-25: 'He sold them...,' Former Australia skipper Tim Paine on Gambhir vs Shastri as India coach

Former India captain and BCCIpresident Sourav Ganguly backed head coach Gautam Gambhir to lead the side to glory Down Under despite the latest setbacks. Following Rahul Dravid’s departure as the top boss in June this year, the Indian board appointed Gambhir as his replacement till December 2027.&nbsp;

Considering Gambhir’s credentials as a mentor that helped his former IPL team KKR to win the title this year, their third overall, the fans expected the same turnaround for the Men in Blue, which was far from what unfolded.&nbsp;

Under Gambhir, India won the T20I series against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh but suffered defeat in the bilateral ODI series against the Lankans for the first time in 27 years before surrendering to New Zealand at home (0-3) in three Tests, a dark moment in Indian cricket.

Ganguly, who knows what pressure Gambhir must be under while heading to Australia, where they have to win 4-0 or better to qualify directly for the WTC Final 2025, said it is too early to evaluate Gambhir’s coaching run, urging fans to be patient with his style and bestow trust upon him.

"All I will say is let him be. I saw some criticism of what he said in the press conference. It is the way he is. Just because he has lost three Test matches and a one-day series against Sri Lanka, the straight talk has not been looked at nicely. But that is the way he is. Let’s give Gambhir a chance," Gambhir said in a chat with Revsportz.

<h2>Ganguly defends Gambhir’s approach</h2>

Gambhir is straightforward in his approach, both in cricket and otherwise too.&nbsp;

Lately, before flying Down Under, he addressed the media in Mumbai, and upon being asked about his take on Ricky Ponting’s comments on Virat and Rohit’s form leading into the BGT, Gautam reverted that Ponting must remain concerned about the Aussie team and their players.

Reflecting on the same, Ganguly said the on-the-face approach works against Australia, and Gambhir must stick to it.

"Ultimately, you have to go and play the game hard. That is the way it is, and it has happened for ages against Australian cricket teams. That makes this series even more competitive and more followed by people," Ganguly continued.

‘Let him be’ – Sourav Ganguly throws weight behind under-fire India coach Gautam Gambhir ahead of BGT

Ace India batter Virat Kohli has struggled to score Test runs in bulk for the past five years, something he enjoyed doing for most of his career. And with him touring Australia at 36, his reflexes and limitations are probably more exposed to everyone, which the hosts would like to bank on and keep him quiet throughout the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024. Former Australia great Glenn McGrath has suggested something similar.

As India and Australia gear up for the five-match Test series starting November 22 in Perth, all eyes will be on Kohli, who loves playing Down Under and has scored hundreds at almost all venues scheduled to host matches this time.

India's star&nbsp;batter had a horrid time against New Zealand during the recently concluded home Tests, scoring just&nbsp;93 runs across six innings, and&nbsp;the team lost the&nbsp;series&nbsp;0-3. Down on form, if not technically, Kohli will aim to get to his best against his favourite Test opponent.

Speaking on the same lines, McGrath said as much as Kohli loves playing against the Oz, the hosts must target ‘emotional and down’ Kohli in their quest to win the BGT.

"But I think he's probably under pressure a little bit, and if he has a couple of low scores to start with, he could really feel it. I think he's quite an emotional player. When he's up, he's up, and when he's down, he sort of struggles a little bit," McGrath said, as quoted by Fox Sports.

The legendary seamer, however, also warned the hosts of Kohli’s turnaround in form should he win the war of words.

"If they go hard at him, if he gets in the fight with emotions, there's a bit of chat out there, who knows, he might sort of lift," McGrath further added.

<h2>Australia is ready for India challenge</h2>

Having lost Test series to India four times since the past decade, Australia is hungrier to turn the tables around this time, and with India down on confidence, McGrath feels it’s the right time to catch them by their throat.&nbsp;

"Without a doubt, especially after coming off a 3-0 loss against New Zealand, you've got plenty of ammunition to back yourself up. So put the pressure on them and see if they're up for it," he added.

Meanwhile, for India to directly qualify for the WTC Final 2025, they must beat Australia 4-0 or better; otherwise, they will have to rely on other teams’ results to cruise ahead.

BGT 2024/25: Glenn McGrath urges Australian bowlers to go hard at ‘emotional and down’ Virat Kohli

KL Rahul returned to the nets on Sunday (Nov 17), boosting Team India’s morale ahead of the first Test against Australia in Perth starting November 22. Rahul suffered a blow to his right elbow in the WACA simulation game, missing all action since, including Saturday’s training session, which raised doubts about his participation in the first Test. He, however, put all speculations to rest with his return to the training session.

As reported by the Times of India, Rahul batted on the centre wicket for over an hour, facing Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj in the mandatory training session for the BGT-bound squad. He then had a net session with new and old balls.

Rahul’s return to action boosted the visiting camp’s morale, which could be without their star batter, Shubman Gill, for the Perth Test due to a broken thumb.&nbsp;

In the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, who is in India with his family after the birth of his second child and is likely to miss the first of the five Tests, India was rocked by Gill’s injury, adding salt to the injury.&nbsp;

With these two unlikely to remain available for the Perth Test, Team India would have KL Rahul open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. If Rahul had also been out of contention, the travelling side had domestic giant and uncapped opener Abhimanyu Easwaran waiting in the ranks.&nbsp;

<h2>Who will play the number three?</h2>

However, with Rahul returning to the nets, he will play the first Test, with Team India seeking options out of the 18-man squad to pick someone to play at number three.

Though none of the squad members play at that position in red-ball cricket at all levels, India could surprise the Aussies with a new name for the BGT opener.

In another case, India could hand Easwaran his debut Test cap, asking him to open with Jaiswal and Rahul coming in at three – one of the positions he is comfortable batting at, as echoed by head coach Gautam Gambhir earlier.

Meanwhile, several reports from Australia claimed that the BCCI selectors have asked one of India-A batters, Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal, to stay back Down Under as cover should India run out of options in the top order.&nbsp;

India will begin the marquee series at the Optus Stadium in Perth, with the remaining matches scheduled at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide (day and night Test), Gabba in Brisbane, MCG in Melbourne and SCG in Sydney, respectively.&nbsp;

Besides, for India to qualify for the WTC Final 2025, they must beat the Oz 4-0 or better to cruise ahead directly; otherwise, they would rely on others' results to qualify.&nbsp;

KL Rahul’s return to nets boosts India’s morale ahead of BGT opener in Perth

Injury concerns and the unavailability of star players have rocked India ahead of the Perth Test against Australia starting November 22. Shubman Gill broke his thumb while fielding in the slips in the WACA simulation game, likely ruling him out of the BGT opener; at the same time, KL Rahul also suffered a blow to his right elbow, putting his participation in the first Test in jeopardy. Besides, no official word on Rohit Sharma’s availability is made public.

With misery piling on the touring side, which lately suffered a maiden Test series whitewash at home at the hands of New Zealand, are left with no options but to ask either of two India-A players, Devdutt Padikkal and Sai Sudharsan, to stay back as covers for the Perth game should all three abovementioned players remain unavailable for selection.

Devdutt and Sai were part of two India-A matches against Australia-A, which the visitors lost, and played the simulation game in Perth. With the rest of India-A players, barring the three travelling reserves for BGT - Navdeep Saini, Khaleel Ahmed and Mukesh Kumar, flying home on November 17, the selectors have reported asking one of the top-order batters to link with the main squad ahead of the Perth match.

For backup, India already has uncapped Abhimanyu Easwaran in the Test squad for the Australia series.

"The final call will be with the coach, captain and selectors, but there is a strong possibility of management asking one specialist top-order batter to stay back for the series opener. Abhimanyu Easwaran is already there, but one of Sai or Devdutt could well stay back too," a source close to the development said, as quoted by Times of India (TOI).

<h2>Tough call to make for selectors</h2>

Padikkal, the left-handed batter, seemed to have impressed chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who has been tracking his game since his Test debut against England early this year. In his lone outing in Dharamsala, Padikkal scored 65 and 88 versus Australia-A in the second innings of the first unofficial Test in Mackay.

On the other hand, Sai has been in some form. The left-handed batter scored a double hundred in the Ranji Trophy for Tamil Nadu in the leadup to India-A matches, where he notched an impressive century in the second innings of the first Test against Australia-A.&nbsp;

Sai also hammered a ton in the Duleep Trophy and for Surrey in the English County earlier. &nbsp;

BGT: Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudharsan asked to stay back as Shubman Gill likely out of Perth Test - Reports

Team India could be handed a major blow in their preparation for the opening contest against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after Shubman Gill sustained a finger injury on Saturday (Nov 16). In preparation for the high-voltage series, Gill was fielding in slips when the injury occurred, which now casts doubt on his involvement in the opening match. India are already facing a crisis in the top order, with Rohit Sharma unlikely to play in the Perth Test due to paternity leave.

<h2>Gill doubtful for Perth Test</h2>

One of the first names on the team sheet, the 25-year-old will undergo scans before a decision is taken on his availability. Gill has reportedly injured his right thumb which could come as a huge headache for the Indian team management. According to Times of India’s report, Gill has injured his thumb in the WACA simulation game which is being played in the build-up to the Perth Test. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to comment on the injury, the right-hand batter is unlikely to recover.

The injury will come as a huge trouble for the Indian team management with KL Rahul and Rohit both doubtful for the Perth contest. Rahul is nursing an injury and facing a race against time while Rohit is on paternity leave and is yet to travel to Australia.

The Indian team has been victorious in the last two visits to Australia and also won the Boxing Day Test in 2020. Rohit Sharma’s men will look to repeat the heroics as they look to take a giant step towards the World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord’s.

BGT 2024/25: Shubman Gill suffers finger injury while fielding, doubtful for opening contest in Perth

Former India coach Ravi Shastri has picked three pacers and two all-rounders in his India playing XI for the first Test against Australia in Perth starting November 22. With regular captain Rohit Sharma’s availability status for the first game remaining&nbsp;unclear, the selectors and team management are looking to put KL Rahul or Abhimanyu Easwaran in his place, but Shastri, under whom India won Down Under twice, differs.

Rahul, Easwaran and spare keeper-batter Dhruv Jurel were part of the India-A XI for the second unofficial Test against Australia-A, with both openers failing miserably across two outings. Easwaran too was not among runs in the first game. Jurel, however, was the only silver lining among the BGT-bound batters at the MCG, scoring twin fifties and pressing his case for a spot in the playing XI.&nbsp;

Though that comes as a scare for the touring team, who would need a specialist to play at the top alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shastri has thrown a new name in the mix, a player already part of the playing XI.

"It's horses for courses in many ways. Most of the team will pick themselves, but there'll be one or two cases where you might have to just go and dig deep and go with gut feeling," Shastri said while speaking on ‘The ICC Review’.

"You can push Shubman (Gill) back up the order, and he has opened in the past in Australia. Otherwise, you'll have to then make an alternative. Easwaran hasn't done that well (for India-A in Australia). But it's how he's batting in the nets, how Rahul is batting in the nets. But that Shubman Gill option is also there,” Shastri said of Jaiswal’s new opening partner in Tests.

<h2>Rahul down to number three</h2>

Ahead of departing for Australia, Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed the media in Mumbai, shedding light on who could replace Rohit at the top for the Perth Test should he remain unavailable for selection. Hinting at it could be KL Rahul, Gautam said players like Rahul can bat anywhere in the lineup, something Shastri agrees on.&nbsp;

He said regardless of his form, KL has performed in Australia before and with his feet moving nicely, he can take up that number three slot.&nbsp;

"Sometimes runs are not important, but if a player is moving well, and if the feet are moving nicely, and you try and understand his (KL Rahul) game, and you realize if he has the game for those conditions if he has the right kind of shots for those kinds of pitches. These are the things you've got to look at when you start picking a side overseas," he said.&nbsp;

"I would be watching them like a hawk in the nets, the batters and the bowlers because for me as a bowler, rhythm is important. And as a batter, again, tempo and rhythm is important,” Shastri continued.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Shastri’s India XI for the Perth Test reads –&nbsp;

Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja/Washington Sundar, Nitish Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj

Former India coach Ravi Shastri has picked three pacers and two all-rounders in his India playing XI for the first Test against Australia in Perth starting November 22.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri has picked three pacers and two all-rounders in his India playing XI for the first Test against Australia in Perth starting November 22. With regular captain Rohit Sharma’s availability status for the first game remaining unclear, the selectors and team management are looking to put KL Rahul or Abhimanyu Easwaran in his place, but Shastri, under whom India won Down Under twice, differs. Rahul, Easwaran and spare keeper-batter Dhruv Jurel were part of the India-A XI for the second unofficial Test against Australia-A, with both openers failing miserably across two outings. Easwaran too was not among runs in the first game. Jurel, however, was the only silver lining among the BGT-bound batters at the MCG, scoring twin fifties and pressing his case for a spot in the playing XI.
