Indian team’s bowling coach Paras Mhambrey has opened up on the workload management of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah as Team India prepares for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under against Australia. Speaking on Friday (Nov 15), Mhambrey reckons Bumrah is unlikely to play in five Test matches of the BGT. India will start their BGT quest on November 22 in Perth against the Aussies as they also bid for a place in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC).

Mhambrey comments on Bumrah’s workload

“Well, workload management, in general, is being taken care of not only for this series because we've been part of this from our term. I'm sure that's going to continue. If you look at England, Boom had to miss a Test match. The call is when you take that step. It's going to be important to look at the series, a 5 Test series. I'm not sure Boom will play all 5 Test matches,” Mhambrey said while speaking on the workload management of the Indian pacer.

Bumrah has struggled with injuries in the past, which saw him miss most of 2023 and the 2022 T20 World Cup. He recently missed the Mumbai Test match against New Zealand, highlighting the importance of workload management. He is also likely to be available for India in the captain's role, with Rohit Sharma set to miss the Perth Test match due to paternity leave.

BGT 2024-25: Paras Mhambrey reacts on Jasprit Bumrah's workload management, says 'I'm not sure...'

Indian cricket veteran Sunil Gavaskar has pinpointed Rohit Sharma’s weakness, saying Rohit’s attacking style could put him in hot waters. Though the Indian skipper is a proven batter at the top, against Australia Down Under, he perhaps has to hold his horses to avoid getting into trouble.

Gavaskar, a Test veteran, says Rohit likes taking on the bowler up front, something he needs to avoid doing early into the innings against the Aussies. With Mitchell Starc taking the new ball, Gavaskar wants Rohit to avoid attacking him, explaining how a Kookaburra ball (after a certain point) aids batters Down Under, a place which he considers a batting paradise.

"At the start, he can be troubled by Mitchell Starc's lengths and lines,” Gavaskar said while speaking of Rohit during a chat on Star Sports. “What happens often with Rohit is that his foot doesn't move as much as it should in the first few overs of the contest, because of which he gets into trouble. But, if he can survive the first two or three overs, he can score runs. He needs to get the shot selection right. That's not just for Rohit Sharma but for any batter.”

Gavaskar stressed how playing the waiting game in foreign conditions works as a magic wand for touring batters, adding Rohit can pile tons of runs only by applying himself better.

“Like I said, Australian pitches are good for batters. And they use Kookaburra ball. It doesn't swing or seam much after the first 15 overs,” Gavaskar explained. “Test cricket is a five-day match. If you show some restraint in the first session, then you can score runs.”

Rohit’s status remains unknown

Contrary to constant speculations of Rohit missing the first Test against Australia for personal reasons, the BCCI and the team management have kept mum on the matter, leaving it to Rohit to decide on his participation. Though Rohit stayed in Mumbai to be with his wife, who is expecting their second child, the remainder of the BGT-bound Test squad has already reached Australia.

Should Rohit remain unavailable for selection for the Perth Test, KL Rahul will open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. The right-handed batter, however, suffered an elbow injury playing against India-A in a WACA simulation game on Friday (Nov 15). Rahul left the field immediately with discomfort, with the medical team attending him on the sidelines.

Also, in Rohit’s absence, ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah will lead India against Australia in the Perth Test.

BGT 2024/25: ‘Hold your horses’ – Gavaskar asks Rohit Sharma to see off first few overs to avoid ‘trouble’

KL Rahul suffered a blow to his elbow during an intra-squad game simulation at the WACA in Perth, while the remaining batters struggled against the moving deliveries and bounce. In the lead-up to the first BGT Test against Australia at the Optus Stadium starting November 22, Rahul’s latest injury rocks the Indian camp.

Returning to playing at the top in red-ball cricket after being asked to play in the middle for the past few years, Rahul opened with Jaiswal, making early inroads with some clean striking but departed soon after.

While KL Rahul was taken off the field following suffering a blow to his right elbow of a rising delivery from lanky Prasidh Krishna, Jaiswal edged one to the second slip on 15.

Ace Indian batter Virat Kohli shrugged off fitness concerns with a brief yet comfortable stay at the crease. He hit a few cracking shots through the covers but nicked to the second slip off Mukesh Kumar on 15. Per the latest reports, Kohli immediately returned to nearby nets, spending over half an hour honing his skills.

Rishabh Pant, India’s best batter on the tour Down Under, coped with a nasty blow to his groin before falling prey to Nitish Kumar Reddy, who also accounted for Dhruv Jurel, caught in the slips. Though Pant struggled against the bounce during net sessions in Perth, he smoked a four on the off-side early into his innings.

Rahul’s elbow injury worries India

The Indian Team and fans are unaware of Rohit Sharma's status for the first Test in Perth, with multiple reports suggesting that the India captain might miss it for personal reasons.

However, before boarding the flight for Australia, India head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed the media in Mumbai, confirming that should Rohit remain absent for the Perth game, KL Rahul might open with Jaiswal.

With this latest injury upsetting the whole scenario, should Rahul also miss the first game against Australia, India-A batter and domestic giant Abhimanyu Easwaran will fill in for him at the top. In the recently concluded two unofficial Tests against Australia A, the right-handed batter failed to press his case for a Test debut, scoring 36 runs in four outings.

Former Aussie great Ian Healy has urged the Indian team to stop closed-door training sessions as they prepare for the opening Test match against Australia in Perth. On Thursday (Nov 14) Healy stated that the Indian team needed to be more direct and that their closed-door training session could dampen their preparations for the opening Test.

The Indian team will start their two-month-long Australian tour with the opening Test in Perth on November 22 with a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) final still up for grabs.

Healy warns India ahead of the series

"It's never worked. The squad just doesn't relax when you do this, when you lock yourself away the media start turning the screws and the squad just can't relax. England did it when they opened themselves up, and the next one when they didn't, and it was an incredible difference in performance,” Healy said while speaking on Thursday.

India is likely to head into the five-match Test series without skipper Rohit Sharma who is on paternity leave. While the rest of the squad is in Australia, Rohit could still join the Indian team if returns early from the leave. On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to wear the captain’s armband if the veteran batter is absent.

BGT 2024-25: Ian Healy urges India to stop closed-door training session, says 'it's never worked'

Australian opener Usman Khawaja feels Jasprit Bumrah’s awkward action makes him lethal but warns his side about India having plenty in their pace battery to offer than just him. With the first BGT Test starting in Perth in less than 10 days, Khawaja talked about how, at first, it’s difficult to face Bumrah, but with time of getting used to facing him, it mellows down, though the threat remains always.

Bumrah is perhaps the best bowler across formats, and with him leading the pace attack this time Down Under, he’d again be a thorn in the flesh for the Aussies.

"I mean, when you first face him, it's just his action. It's a different, bizarre kind of action as his release point is very different than other bowlers," Khawaja said of Bumrah on Fox Cricket, who has bowled 155 deliveries to the Aussie batter across seven Test innings but never dismissed him.

"It's just a bit further up. So, a lot of guys release the ball from near the popping crease. [Against Bumrah] It feels like he gets a bit further out just with his front-braced leg and pushes the ball out."

"So, it feels like it comes out and then gets there a lot quicker than you expect it. It's just once you get used to the action, it's fine. I played against him a lot. Not to say that he can't give me out first ball. I mean anyone can. But it's one of those things where once, the first time you face him, it's very awkward, and then when you get a little bit of rhythm, it gets better. But he's still a class bowler,” Khawaja continued.

Khawaja praises India’s pace battery

Even though India will be without its most experienced seamer, Mohammed Shami, in this Test series, they still have Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna and uncapped Harshit Rana to divide the workload alongside Bumrah. Praising Indian quicks, Khawaja said, "Everyone talks about Jasprit, but they actually have a lot of other good bowlers."

"I think [Mohammed] Siraj is a very good bowler. He's a very good bowler to both right-handers and left-handers. When [Mohammed] Shami was fit, when he was playing those series, he was a very good bowler. He was very underrated. No one really talked about him. And then they got good spinners lining up, too, which really complements their fast bowlers."

Explaining his thought process while facing Bumrah, Khawaja said instead of thinking about how to not get out to him, he’d look for ways to score runs against him.

"So for me, it's never ... I'm just not thinking about Jasprit Bumrah. You want to ask me where do you think... I'm not thinking about where he is getting me out. I'm thinking about where am I scoring runs against him,” he concluded.

Khawaja will open with debutant Nathan McSweeney in the Perth Test against India.

Ace India seamer Mohammed Shami is back doing what he does best—picking wickets. On his competitive return to cricket for the first time in around a year, Shami bagged four wickets for Bengal against Madhya Pradesh in the ongoing Ranji Trophy tie on Thursday (Nov. 14). After going wicketless in his 10-over spell on day one, Shami picked four in his next on day two, dismissing MP on 167.

The right-arm seamer accounted for MP Captain Shubham Sharma and lower-order batters, including Saransh Jain and Kumar Kartikeya, helping Bengal maintain a 61-run lead.

Despite Shami’s clinical performance in his return game, his participation in the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy remains uncertain. At the time when the BCCI named the 18-man squad for the marquee Australia Tests, Shami, who in the lead-up to the announcement declared himself 100% match-fit, having bowled full throttle following the first two Tests against New Zealand, failed to make the cut due to fitness concerns.

Following the conclusion of the final Test in Mumbai, Rohit addressed Shami’s absence from the BGT squad, claiming everyone concerned took a collective call as they didn’t want to have an under-cooked Shami for five Tests Down Under.

Meanwhile, should Shami attain full match fitness in the two Ranji matches he is scheduled to play in, chances of him linking up with the India Test squad for the Australia series could rise; however, neither the board nor the management has hinted about it.

Shami’s rise and injury

Shami wasn’t India’s first-choice seamer for the opening few games in the home World Cup last year but got included in the playing XI following an injury to all-rounder Hardik Pandya in the Bangladesh tie.

The right-arm seamer played the New Zealand tie and wreaked havoc till the end, picking 24 wickets from seven contested matches, including a seven-wicket haul against the Kiwis in the semis in Mumbai. Though he removed David Warner on the second ball in the final, Shami failed to guide his team across the winning line.

That, however, was his last on-field appearance as an ankle injury ruled him out for the next 10-12 months.

Shami’s rise and injury Shami wasn’t India’s first-choice seamer for the opening few games in the home World Cup last year but got included in the playing XI following an injury to all-rounder Hardik Pandya in the Bangladesh tie. (With inputs from agencies)

India spinner Ravi Ashwin has revealed that playing with ace Aussie batter Steve Smith in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has helped him decode the batter. The statement comes as the two sides gear up for the Board-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) which starts in about 10 days.

Smith and Ashwin have always been a fascinating contest and the fans would hope for the same this time around as well. While Ashwin admitted that initially, Smith had him, he has been able to figure the Aussie out in recent years.

“Steve Smith is someone that’s fascinating as a player against spin especially,” Ashwin said while talking to 7Cricket ahead of the BGT.

BGT 2024-25: India spinner Ravi Ashwin reveals 'IPL net sessions' helped him figure out Steve Smith

Ahead of the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), former South Africa spinner Paul Adams reckoned that Nathan Lyon has a more 'complete game' than arch-rival R Ashwin. Both Lyon and Ashwin are modern-day greats and amongst the top 10 highest wicket-takers in the purest format. The duo are currently gearing up for the India-Australia Test series, in Australia, with the series opener scheduled to kick off on November 22 in Perth.

In a virtual interaction arranged by SA20, Adams said, "I still think Nathan Lyon has a more complete game in terms of competing in the subcontinent and in Australia or South Africa, those types of conditions, than Ashwin. He has a carrom ball that can turn the ball the opposite ways. But Lyon has been someone who has bowled with a lot of over-spin. That challenges the batters," Adams further mentioned.

In 105 Tests, Ashwin has 536 wickets – seventh-overall – whereas the Aussie veteran Lyon has 530 (eighth overall) scalps in 129 Tests.

Adams also spoke about Mohammed Shami and how his absence will hurt India in the upcoming BGT Down Under. Shami has been out of cricketing action since the 2023 ODI World Cup due to multiple injuries. While he marked his return to competitive cricket in Bengal's Ranji Trophy clash versus Madhya Pradesh, which started on Wednesday (Nov 13) in Indore, it remains to be seen if he can be a late addition to the Rohit Sharma-led India squad.

In this regard, Adams added "I think he will be a major miss for India, given the Australian conditions. The pace and bouncy wickets in Australia would have helped India in gaining the upper hand if Shami had been in the squad but that's not in the selector's hands as he is recovering, but I think he will be missed."

BGT 2024/25: Nathan Lyon is a more 'complete bowler' than R Ashwin - Former SA spinner's BIG claim

Former Australia wicketkeeper-batter Brad Haddin thinks that India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal won't be able to stand pace bowling at Perth during the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The statement comes as both teams gear up for the series, which starts in less than two weeks.

"I don't think that the Indian batters are going to stand up to our quicks. I know Jaiswal is a really good player, but he hasn't come out and seen Australia before, so I'm not sure whether he is going to handle the bounce. Opening in Perth is hard work," Haddin said on while talking on LiSTNR Sport podcast.

Haddin's former teammate and ex-Aussie skipper Aaron Finch, meanwhile, pointed that wicketkeepers from both sides, that is, Rishabh Pant (India) and Alex Carey (Australia) would be pivotal in defining the results of the series.

"I think the key could be Alex Carey and Rishabh Pant, the two wicketkeepers are going to be so important. At one time or the other in the series, the top order will get knocked over. Both fast-bowling attacks are so good that they will get on a roll and knock over the top order. So for me it's that really crucial role of Alex at No. 7 and Rishabh at 6 likely. Carey is aggressive, Rishabh is aggressive. The game is going to go one or two ways really quick. And I think that will be so important," said Finch.

India have not lost a Test series against Australia since 2014. Since then, they have won all four series played between two sides, two at home and two away.

BGT 2024-25: Former Aussie player thinks Yashasvi Jaiswal won't be 'able to stand up to pacers' | Here's Why

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting feels Mohammed Shami's absence will be a 'huge loss' for India in the upcoming 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) starting on Nov. 22 in Perth. India are set to play Australia in a five-match Test series with pacer Mohammed Shami not part of the 18-man squad. Shami has been out of cricketing action since 2023 ODI World Cup, where he ended with most wickets (24). Since then, he has had injury concerns -- mainly ankle and knee issues -- and will mark his return to competitive cricket in Bengal's upcoming Ranji Trophy tie versus Madhya Pradesh, in Indore, on Nov. 13. He will aim to bowl without any discomfort to be a late addition to India's Test squad.

At present, Shami is not part of the Indian squad and Ponting feels it will be a huge loss for the visitors if he misses the entire series. Speaking in a video shared by the ICC on Instagram, Punter said, "The big omission is Shami not being fit. I think that's a huge loss for India. He’s been one of the leading fast bowlers in the world for the last three or four years, and mainly with the red ball. His one-day record’s been very good, but what he's been able to do home and away with the red ball in Test cricket has been quite phenomenal."

He further added, "You talk to all the players that face him as well; they talk about how hard and difficult he is. And then, when you think about where the first two Tests are with Perth and Adelaide, he’d be perfectly suited to bowling in those conditions. So, I think that’s the only real chink in the armour."

The visitors are likely to be without regular captain Rohit Sharma for the series opener in Perth. Reportedly, he will be out on paternity leave, hence, Jasprit Bumrah will lead in his absence. Meanwhile, if Shami doesn't show any signs of pain in his upcoming Ranji game, he might be included in Test squad.

BGT 2024/25: ‘Players will tell you...,’ Ponting feels Shami’s absence is ‘real chink in the armour for India’

Pakistan interim head coach Jason Gillespie is surprised with Cricket Australia’s promotional priorities regarding the just concluded ODI series against the Men in Green, which the visitors won for the record second time. While Pakistan’s series win Down Under came after 22 years, a monumental feat for an Asian Team, the hosts seemed to care the least about this one, baffling Gillespie, the country’s one of greatest Test bowlers.

Shortly after the conclusion of the third ODI in Perth, which Pakistan won by eight wickets, and with that, the three-match series 2-1, Gillespie said Cricket Australia’s priority remains the marquee Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India starting with the first Test in Perth on November 22.

"To be honest, I pretty much saw no promotion of our one-day series by Cricket Australia, which was a bit of a surprise. It's pretty obvious that they're prioritizing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series against India because I saw no promotion of this series," Gillespie said, quoted by the Sydney Morning Herald.

While Australia won the first One-Dayer at the MCG with two wickets remaining, Pakistan returned stronger to claim the Adelaide ODI before winning the final one at the Optus Stadium to clinch their second ODI series Down Under, only the second team after South Africa to do it twice.

This series win is also the first under newly-appointed white-ball skipper Mohammad Rizwan.

Meanwhile, the action resumes with the three-match T20Is starting at the Gabba in Brisbane on Thursday (Nov 14).

Team India to reach Australian shores

While several Test-bound players, including KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel and three reserve players are already in Australia, having participated in the two contested unofficial Tests against Australia A, the remaining squad members will land on the Aussie shores sooner.

Earlier, the BCCI cancelled the intra-squad match between India A and India, scheduled at the WACA in Perth, with the decision-makers opting for the training sessions at the centre wicket. After India’s three-day stint at the WACA, the Australia Test squad will arrive at the venue to practice at the centre wicket and get acclimatised to the conditions.

Moreover, from the Indian camp, uncertainties surround captain Rohit Sharma’s participation in the Perth Test, with India head coach Gautam Gambhir confirming should Rohit remains unavailable for selection for the first game, KL Rahul will open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. In that case, ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah will captain the side in the first game.

‘Cricket Australia’s priority is India’ – Jason Gillespie surprised with ‘no promotion of Pakistan ODIs’

Former Australia greats Michael Hussey and Adam Gilchrist expressed their reservations over the hosts’ squad selection criteria for the first Test against India in Perth starting November 22.

While Hussey feels Nathan McSweeney’s selection ahead of a specialist opener for the first Test is a tough call, Gilchrist questions Josh Inglis’ selection as a reserve batter, whom he thinks is among the top six Test batters in the country.

However, per Cricket Australia's earlier policy of playing their best batters for any Test, Inglis’ appointment as a backup player, besides being second to McSweeney in the pecking order, contradicts its very purpose.

McSweeney, 25, never opened in first-class cricket until asked by the selectors to do so for the second unofficial Test against India A at the MCG, where he scored 14 and 25 across both innings. Though he impressed everyone with his match-winning knock in the second inning of the first game, picking him over regular openers and other contenders like Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft, and Sam Konstas baffles Hussey.

“I think it’s a tough ask to ask him to play his first Test match as an opening batsman against India in a huge series when he hasn’t opened before in first-class cricket apart from last week in the India A clash.

“It’s not easy at all. I know people will say Simon Katich and Shane Watson have done it in the past. They moved from the middle-order up to the top order, but they played 20-30 Test matches before they made the move,” Hussey said on Fox Cricket while commentating in the third Australia-Pakistan ODI on Sunday (Nov 8).

Considering Australia will be without their emerging star Cameron Green for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, fitting the top six best batters in the playing XI would be some task for the selectors, captain and management.

“It’s a tough ask, and, personally, I would prefer a specialist opener, but I think the Australian selectors’ philosophy is picking the best six batters in the country, and then we’ll figure the order out after that. They may not play him at the top of the order. Marnus Labuschagne may move up. Maybe they haven’t made up their mind exactly what their order is at this stage. They have just decided these are our six best batters, and now we’ll figure out where they sit best,” Hussey added.

Gilly questions Inglis’ new role

Inglis has been Australia’s first-choice white-ball keeper batter since the past year; however, he plays second fiddle to Test regular Alex Carey. Despite being among the runs in the domestic, his selection as a reserve batter, while he should be among the first names on the team sheet, makes Gilchrist question the selection criteria.

“Inglis is in that squad as a reserve batter, which isn’t traditionally what Australia does in home conditions. I think McSweeney will open…but do they stick with the policy they had last year where we want our six best batters in Australia playing in the top six? Josh Inglis, at the moment, is in the six best batters in Australia. Do they break away from that policy? I think they will.” Gilchrist said on Fox Cricket.

Meanwhile, the right-handed McSweeney will open alongside Usman Khawaja in the first Test against India.

Former Australia greats Michael Hussey and Adam Gilchrist expressed their reservations over the hosts’ squad selection criteria for the first Test against India in Perth starting November 22.

ALSO READ: IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Kasi Viswanathan addresses CSK chasing Rishabh Pant rumours, says ‘discussions were…’ McSweeney, 25, never opened in first-class cricket until asked by the selectors to do so for the second unofficial Test against India A at the MCG, where he scored 14 and 25 across both innings. Gilly questions Inglis’ new role Inglis has been Australia’s first-choice white-ball keeper batter since the past year; however, he plays second fiddle to Test regular Alex Carey. BGT: Australia's squad selection criteria for Perth Test baffles Hussey, Gilchrist

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar thinks that the current Indian team is in panic mode following a whitewash against New Zealand in the home Test series. India's 0-3 loss vs New Zealand earlier this month was their first-ever clean sweep at home in a Test series.

"Clearly India is in panic mode. They are a bit shaken by what happened against New Zealand at home and that's when plans start to go awry. And that is where I believe that one has to actually look at it in a different way, where you think there's nothing to lose here, so that's the time you go back and do the right thing and play players who deserve to get a chance," said Manjrekar while talking to cricket news website ESPNCricinfo.

Manjrekar also showed bemusement over KL Rahul kept getting chances despite dropping averages and the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) decision to send him to play for India A on the shadow tour Australia. The decision came ahead of India's upcoming five-Test tour of Australia which starts on November 22.

"KL Rahul, I don't know there's some fascination that the team management and the selectors have for him, that they just want him to be a part of the playing XI whether it's at the top or down the order. Maybe Easwaran hasn't convinced them as much," said Manjrekar.

"KL Rahul should consider himself very lucky to be getting opportunities. Such comebacks and opportunities, very few players over the years have been given. Whether he is up or down the order, the fact that he has received chances despite his average dropping, I guess somewhere they hope that KL Rahul will find the form that he is capable of. But I think that Easwaran opening with Jaiswal does not fill them up with confidence, but that will be the right thing to do," he added.

With India skipper Rohit Sharma uncertain for the first Test in Perth, Abhimanyu Eswaran and Rahul are in line for his spot alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting says the hosts must remain wary of a turnaround in Virat Kohli’s form in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, as India's batting great loves scoring against the Oz, especially in their backyard. Kohli is far from his best run in Tests, having last scored a Test hundred against West Indies last year, but despite his array of poor scores, the batting legend is just one inning away from finding his Midas touch, reckons Ponting.

Against New Zealand in the recently concluded Test series at home, in which India lost 0-3, Kohli scored just 93 runs across six outings, averaging a mere 15.50.

With his struggle against spin making headlines worldwide, Kohli returns to Down Under to continue his love affair against bounce and pace, where he averages 54.08 from 13 Tests, including six hundreds and four fifties.

Ponting, a batting great himself, refused to judge Kohli for his lean patch, saying great players should never be questioned, and Kohli falls in the same category.

“I’ve said it before about Virat — you don’t ever question the greats of the game. There’s no doubt he’s a great of the game. He loves playing against Australia. In fact, I know he loves playing against Australia. And his record (in Australia) is very good. If there’s a time for him to turn it around, it’d be this series. So, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Virat make runs in the first game,” Ponting said to ICC.

Form a concern though

Since the start of this year, Virat’s Test average reads 22.72 from six games – his lowest in Tests in a calendar year since 2011. The dip in his form also resulted in Kohli falling out of the top 20 batters in the ICC Test Rankings for the first time in his career.

Though Ponting remains aware of the threat Kohli brings with him, he showed concern over his stat that reads Virat has scored just two Test hundreds in the past five years.

“I saw a stat the other day about Virat; it said he’s only scored two (three) Test hundreds in the last five years. That didn’t seem right to me, but if that is right, then that is, I mean, that’s a concern. There wouldn’t be anyone else probably even playing international cricket as a top-order batsman that’s only scored two Test match hundreds in five years,” Ponting continued.

Meanwhile, India and Australia will face off in the first Test in Perth starting November 22. The remaining four matches will take place in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, respectively.

India Test captain Rohit Sharma will fly to Australia with the Indian Test squad while his participation in the first Test in Perth remains uncertain, per the latest report.

“He is travelling, but his participation in the 1st Test is yet not confirmed. Will see what happens next anything in regards to this. His availability is subject to his personal matter," a source close to the information said, as quoted by India Today.

Earlier, several media reports indicated that Rohit could miss any one of the first two Tests Down Under for personal reasons, with the Indian skipper confirming the same in a media statement following the conclusion of the home New Zealand Tests.

“Right now, I am not too sure whether I’ll be going, but let’s see. Fingers crossed," Rohit said after the Mumbai Test against New Zealand.

Meanwhile, if Rohit remains unavailable for selection for the Perth Test, India could play either KL Rahul or Abhimanyu Easwaran in his place, accompanying Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top; the two contenders, however, failed to leave a mark in the second playing for India A against Australia A in the second unofficial Test in Melbourne.

While KL scored 4 and 10 in two innings in the recently concluded tie that India A lost, the right-handed Easwaran scored just 36 runs across four innings in two contested matches. Should Rohit decide against playing the Perth Test, KL leads the race to replace him in the XI.

Besides, with Dhruv Jurel impressing everyone with his gritty knocks in both innings, including hitting fifties in two outings, chances of him breaking into the Test side grow, if not for the first Test, then surely once during the marquee five-match series.

Six-hour review meeting

Following suffering a maiden Test series whitewash at home against New Zealand, the BCCI alongside the captain Rohit, head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, held a marathon six-hour long review meeting discussing what went wrong, and with the Australian series on the horizon, how can they turn the tables around.

“It was a six-hour marathon meeting which was obviously on the cards after such a debacle. India are going on a tour of Australia and the BCCI would obviously like to ensure that the team is back on track and would like to know how the think-tank (Gambhir-Rohit-Agarkar) are going about it," a senior BCCI source privy to development was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

The report also suggested that the BCCI was unhappy with team management’s call to rest Jasprit Bumrah for the final Test at the Wankhede and prepare a rank turner, which eventually cost India.

“Bumrah’s absence was discussed although it was a precautionary move. Opting for a rank turner despite India not faring well on these tracks are some of the issues that came up for discussion," the source concluded.

The 19-year-old Konstas surged into contention with back-to-back Sheffield Shield centuries for New South Wales this season. But he appeared to have blown his chances in three previous innings for Australia A against India A, scoring 16, 0 and 3. He finally came good in his last opportunity to impress when India A set the hosts 168 to win in their four-day game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Konstas steered them to a six-wicket victory batting at number four, with seven fours and a six in his 128-ball stay.

Beau Webster was not out 46.

At the same time, chief rivals Nathan McSweeney, Marcus Harris and Cameron Bancroft all fell cheaply.

Harris, who is looking to add to his 14 Test caps, hit a patient 74 on Friday, but was out first ball in the second innings.

Bancroft's hopes of resurrecting his Test career were already slim after failing to fire in Mackay and now appear non-existent after he too was out for a golden duck.

Sam Konstas fires reminder to selectors with match-winning 73 against India A as BGT squad announcement looms

Former Australia captain and batting great Ian Chappell has warned the touring Indian Team from going overboard in their attacking approach against Australia Down Under this time. India, who will enter the marquee Border-Gavaskar Trophy after suffering a maiden Test whitewash against New Zealand at home, is under pressure to deliver and win in Australia for the record third straight time. India, however, is also fighting for the spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final next year.

Chappell addressed Team India’s batting issues, including discussing their struggles against spin (at home) and extra bounce (away). Chappell opined that although some of their youngsters – Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill are in form, the touring side is aware and worried about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s dying reflexes, considering their age and performance lately.

The former Aussie legend added that if India tries to be over-aggressive in their shot selection Down Under, extra bounce might catch them up, further exposing their batting vulnerabilities.

“India have got some batting problems. I think Jaiswal is a very good-looking young player, a left-hand opener, I think Gill can really play. But then you've got Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who are both ageing, and you get to that point where people start talking about it, and maybe it starts to creep into your head a little bit (where you think), 'Am I getting to that age where it starts to go downhill?', and they're both at that age."

"The only thing I'd say against that is they're coming to Australia where the pitches are pretty good, but there'll be the extra bounce, and if they have gone over the top, then the extra bounce will find them out," Chappell said on Wide World of Sports’ Outside the Rope show.

Pressure on youngsters

With Team India overlooking Test giants Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane for this tour and Rohit and Virat struggling to get among the runs, the pressure has fallen on youngsters, who failed to justify their selections in the past year or so.

Chappell reckons that India is overly relying on youngsters (Jaiswal, Gill, Sarfaraz Khan and even Dhruv Jurel) to deliver against the high-flying Aussies so much that the thought of them winning the third time could suffer a beating.

“They (India) have moved on Pujara, and they've moved on Rahane, and they've left Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, their best two players, but all of a sudden they've had a bit of a rocky period... and that has put pressure now on the younger guys and also their lower-order. You still need to make the bulk of your runs from your best players, and over the last probably 12 or 18 months that hasn't been the case for India,” he continued.

The Optus Stadium in Perth will host the first Test starting November 22, with Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney scheduled to stage the remaining four matches.

BGT: Ian Chappell explains how over-aggressive approach could cost India Down Under

New Zealand blanked India 3-0 in the recently concluded Test series, becoming the first team to clean-sweep India in their home conditions. That blow hit everyone - from players to analysts and fans to former legends, harder, with ex-India captain and batting great Sunil Gavaskar coming down hard on Rohit Sharma’s men over this result.

With India losing the home Test series 0-3, their chances of reaching the WTC Final 2025 suffered a serious beating; for them to now qualify for the summit clash for the third straight time, they must beat Australia 4-0, something Gavaskar feels is like a mountain to climb for the visitors.

Gavaskar tore into BCCI’s ‘short-gain policy’ of preparing tracks for just spinners when their team has the best fast bowler in the world – Jasprit Bumrah, saying this cost India in this series, adding with this low morale, it’s hard to pull off a miracle Down Under.

“Australia looks like a huge mountain to climb after the Indian team stumbled terribly on a speed bump called New Zealand. Nobody, not even the Kiwis themselves, would have thought of a clean sweep against India, and that too in India.”

“It has happened thanks to the short-gain policy of preparing pitches for our spinners when just about everybody in the cricketing world agrees that we have the best new-ball bowler in the world across all formats," Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

Calling off intra-squad game upsets Gavaskar

The BCCI had earlier planned an intra-squad game between India and India-A at the WACA in Perth ahead of the first Test but scrapped this idea at the last minute, restricting India’s preparation for the marquee series to just training in the nets and batting on centre wicket.

Though most batters picked have toured Australia before, Gavaskar feels this decision could cost the newcomers like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan, who are crucial to the side’s success in Australia.

"We are now told that the warm-up game before the first Test has been called off. Wouldn’t it benefit youngsters like (Yashasvi) Jaiswal and Sarfaraz (Khan), who are playing on Australian pitches for the first time, to get some runs under their belt and get a feel of what the pitches will be like?

"And if they get out early, they can still get into the nets and practice against the throw-down specialist or the net bowlers. For bowlers like Akash Deep and Harshit Rana too, it’s essential to know the best length to bowl in Australia, as it’s different from India, and the best learning is in a proper match and not just net practice.

"Let’s just hope that good sense prevails, and even now, though it’s too late, some warm-up games can be arranged, even if it’s against the State A teams like Queensland A and Victoria A. These warm-up games will give the first-timers to Australia and youngsters good practice and a better chance to succeed," Gavaskar added.

Meanwhile, the Optus Stadium in Perth will host the first Test starting November 22.

With India losing the home Test series 0-3, their chances of reaching the WTC Final 2025 suffered a serious beating; for them to now qualify for the summit clash for the third straight time, they must beat Australia 4-0, something Gavaskar feels is like a mountain to climb for the visitors. ‘Cricketing world agrees…’ – India legend slams BCCI’s ‘short-gain policies’ after New Zealand whitewash

Ace Indian seamer Mohammed Shami’s return date to competitive cricket takes a back seat after the Bengal seamer failed to make the cut in the Ranji Trophy squad for Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh games. Shami declared himself 100% match-fit last month, giving hopes of breaking into the Test squad for the marquee Border-Gavaskar series; however, the selectors decided against picking him, with the Indian captain admitting that taking undercooked Shami Down Under would do no good to the travelling side.

"I had been bowling with half a run-up on and off since I can't put too much stress on my body. So, we decided that I would bowl properly, and I gave my 100%. "It felt great, and the results are good. Hopefully, I'll be back on track soon," Shami said during a promotional event last month.

Shami had suffered an ankle injury during the home ODI World Cup last year, and was India’s top wicket-taker with 24 scalps in seven contested matches though he played with injury till the final. Picked for South Africa Tests later, Shami withdrew his name, with doctors not clearing him for on-field return.

The right-arm seamer underwent ankle surgery earlier this year in London and has been recovering and training at the NCA in Bengaluru since. Having missed all cricket action since November last year, Shami was in line for a comeback ahead of the Australia series. But before the selectors could rope him into the Test squad for New Zealand Tests, he suffered a setback in his recovery, delaying his return to competitive cricket.

The selectors, team management and even the fans kept their fingers crossed over Shami’s fitness; however, upon reviewing his recovery pace, the selectors decided against naming him in the 18-man squad for the BGT.

No Shami for Bengal

Shami was expected to start for Bengal in their next two Ranji Trophy fixtures, against Karnataka on November 6 and Madhya Pradesh on November 13. But his absence from the squad indicates that the India bowler hasn’t completely recovered from his injury and might take longer to get back onto the field.

Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah will lead India's pace attack in his absence, which consists of Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep and Harshit Rana, with Mukesh Kumar, Navdeep Saini and Khaleel Ahmed picked as reserves.

KL Rahul and keeper-batter Dhruv Jurel are two BGT-bound Indian players flying to Australia a week earlier than the remainder of the Test squad. The duo will feature for India-A, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, in the second unofficial Test, scheduled for November 7 start at the MCG, to get some match practice ahead of the marquee Australia series beginning on November 22 in Perth.

India-A lost the first match in Mackay by seven wickets, with Test hopefuls Abhimanyu Easwaran and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy failing to leave any mark across both innings.

The match, however, made headlines for other reasons; the umpires accused India-A of ball tampering before the start of play on the final day, which led to an altercation between Ishan Kishan and the on-field umpires. Though the officials warned him for showing dissent, Kishan escaped a potential ban for passing a comment.

Meanwhile, Team India had dropped KL Rahul after the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru, wherein he returned with scores of 0 and 12 across two innings. Shubman Gill replaced Rahul in the batting order for the remaining two Tests; India’s new number three came good with the bat in the first innings in Mumbai, scoring a gritty 90. India, however, lost all three matches, surrendering the Test series to the Kiwis at home for the first time.

On the other hand, Jurel, who made his Test debut against England earlier this year, hasn’t featured in any of the five home Tests this season since Rishabh Pant’s return. Pant and Jurel are the two glovemen for India for the tour Down Under.

Training and not practice game for India

Earlier, the BCCI and the team management scheduled an intra-squad game between India and India-A at WACA before the first Test in Perth; however, the board altered the plans at the last minute, reducing Team India's preparation to training in the nets.

Captain Rohit Sharma echoed the same feelings after the final Test in Mumbai, which India lost by 25 runs.

"We are travelling with a squad of 19 players, and only three days were allotted to us. I don't know how much workload we can get in those three days in terms of getting everyone prepared," Rohit said on Sunday.

"The management feels that we'd rather have a match simulation where batters can spend more time in the middle, and the bowlers can bowl a lot of balls. That is something that we, as a team, feel more comfortable doing rather than playing a practice game because game time is not a problem,” he continued.

Meanwhile, the rest of the BGT-bound Test squad will fly to Australia on November 10 and will train at WACA stadium in Perth, where they will acclimatise to the playing conditions by training in the nets and centre wicket.

KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel to feature in second India-A game ahead of Australia Tests

The BGT-bound Indian Test team was scheduled to play a three-day intra-squad match with India-A (from November 15-17) at the WACA ahead of the first Test against Australia in Perth starting November 22; but, with BCCI scraping this idea, the Rohit Sharma-led side will not play any warm-up game in the lead-up to the five-match Test series. Instead, the board has decided that the team will train during that window, including net sessions at the venue.

India vs India-A was supposed to be a closed-door warm-up game per BCCI's request, but with the Indian Cricket Board changing plans at the last moment, the team will continue training as they eye record a third successive Test series win Down Under.

On the other hand, Australia will train at the venue after India’s stint in an important preparatory camp for some players who haven’t played red-ball cricket lately.

Australia batting great Steve Smith also noted how crucial this training session would be at the centre wicket at WACA, which will have conditions similar to the ones at the Optus Stadium, the venue for the first match.

"Going to be some good centre wickets with our boys bowling in Perth, in similar conditions to what you're going to get at Optus Stadium. [It's] probably going to be enough," Steven Smith recently said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Given Cricket Australia is also searching for the right man to replace David Warner at the top, three of their prime options - rookie batter Sam Konstas, Marcus Harris and Cameron Bancroft failed to get going, with the returning Prasidh Krishna picking two of those three wickets.

With their failure with the bat, the pressure mounts on the selectors to pick between an emerging superstar and experienced ones for the first Test.
Easwaran in Indian Team

Picked as the backup opener for the five-match Test series against Australia, Easwaran might take up Rohit Sharma’s place at the top in one of the two matches, with the India captain reported missing either the first or second game due to personal reasons.

Part of India-A squads over the years, Easwaran, should he debut, will open alongside rookie Yashasvi Jaiswal, with Shubman Gill set to play at number three throughout. Though his rare failure against the new ball could cast doubt over his automatic selection, the selectors look ready to hand him his maiden India cap during this tour.

Meanwhile, the first set of Indian players will fly on November 10, while the others will re-link with the squad sooner.

Abhimanyu Easwaran, Nitish Reddy flop with bat as Australia-A skittle out India-A on 107 in first innings

As Australia gears up for the home Tests against India starting November 22 in Perth, head coach Andrew McDonald has hinted at including uncapped opener Sam Konstas in the squad for the Border-Gavaskar series. Konstas, 19, has made headlines back home with successive hundreds in his first Sheffield Shield game this season, followed by a gritty 43 against Victoria on a tricky MCG pitch.

Since David Warner’s retirement from Tests earlier this year, Australia tried Steve Smith at the top, an experiment that failed, with Smith returning to his preferred number four position for five Tests against India. Though the selectors have kept a close eye on other contenders to partner Usman Khawaja at the top, including Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft and Matthew Renshaw, the focus has shifted to Konstas, who is likely to make his Australia debut next month.

Meanwhile, Konstas will play for Australia A against India A in Mackay on Thursday (Oct 31).

The right-handed batter has featured in just six first-class matches thus far, with McDonald admitting his lack of experience will not stop the selectors from naming him in the Test side should they consider him the ideal choice to fill the vacant spot.

"I think we're picking the best team for here and now, and if that does encompass a younger player, then we'll head down that direction," McDonald said during a chat with ABC's Offsiders.

"And clearly Sam Konstas, on the back of his first Shield match, and the way he went about his work in the second innings at the MCG against Scott Boland, has definitely made some noise.

"I've heard people commentating 'do you protect the player?' If they're ready, they're ready in our mind, and if Sam's capable and we feel as though is capable to fill that spot I don't think that the opponent should come into the equation,” he continued.

Sam’s mentor Watson backs Konstas’ selection

Sam’s mentor and former Australia great Shane Watson also advocated for his selection for the Border-Gavaskar series, with McDonald saying they will not protect any player from any opponent, and knowing India is the strongest opponent, what’s better than playing him at home?

"I think it's purely is this player good enough to play Test cricket?" McDonald said.

"You've got to start against someone, and you shouldn't be holding back and protecting someone from a potential opponent, and India is a strong opponent, but also, the advantage of a player playing in Australia for their first Test summer is that the conditions are familiar. What better place to start than in your own backyard,” he continued.

Meanwhile, besides Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney are the remaining four venues for India Tests.

BGT: Sam Konstas in line for Test debut against India, hints Australia head coach Andrew McDonald

With less than two months to go for the start of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, former Australia captain Ian Chappell has suggested Travis Head to not open during the high-voltage series. Writing in his column Chappell suggested that Test cricket will be a different proposition for Head who has thrived for the Aussies in the last 24 months. Australia are set to play India in a five-match Test series starting November 22 with vital World Test Championship (WTC) points up for grabs.

Chappell suggests Head not to open

"Head opening in Test cricket is based on his unbridled success facing the new ball in both 50-over and T20 cricket. There's no doubt Head, with his ultra-aggressive style, is the ideal player to open in the two short forms of the game. However, Test cricket is an entirely different proposition," Chappell wrote in his column on ESPNCricinfo.

"Any move to open with Head that is designed to unsettle Jasprit Bumrah is asking a lot of the batter. Bumrah, and to a lesser extent Mohammad Siraj, are unlikely to be battered into altering their attacking mentality," said Chappell.

Australia will enter the BGT as favourites under Pat Cummins’ captaincy but have not won the prestigious series since 2014-15. Since then India have beaten the Aussies twice on home turf and twice away. Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane were the last two skippers to help India get over the line as they search for an unlikely hat-trick of BGT away wins.

Former batting great Matthew Hayden feels neither of the two teams – Australia nor India, are outright favourites in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series. Though his ex-teammate and captain Ricky Ponting predicted the hosts would win the series 3-1 this time, ending their dry run against India in Tests, Hayden says the hosts have let go of the home advantage quite a few times recently.

Hayden’s remarks have come after Australia lost twice at the Gabba in Brisbane in the last few years (first against India in 2021 and then to a lower-ranked West Indies team the last time), a fortress never breached in around 40 years.

Although Australia maintained its domination against all visiting teams all this time, India beat them twice at their home - in 2018 and 2022, besides thrashing them in two away series in the past decade.

Meanwhile, Hayden confirmed that the nature of the pitches in three of the five venues – Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, will have drop-in pitches.

"One is a day-night Test match [in Adelaide] - the second Test match," Hayden said.

"Again, once you get those overhead conditions under that twilight zone, they can be really difficult [to bat on]. I would go as far as to say that the home advantage in Australia has been taken away quite a lot, simply on the basis that if you get the wrong side of a certain session, be that you're 4 for 130, at twilight, you can be 8 for 150.

"So, there's no chance to naturally dominate a game. It's quite even the whole time, so it's a very different type of cricket because you don't have those traditional surfaces,” he continued.

‘He’s a package’ – Hayden on Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s rise to the top in such a brief period has impressed everyone, and Hayden is no different. Calling Jaiswal ‘a package’, Hayden said he looks forward to watching the Indian opener do well Down Under but cautioned him not to take things lightly against the Aussies.

Hayden, a well-renowned puller of the cricket ball, lauded Jaiswal’s superb stroke play, especially against the spin.

"I think he's a package," Hayden said of Jaiswal. "Yes, his strokeplay is superb. His ability, in particular, to hit on the up through the covers is phenomenal. [But] that'll also have its vulnerabilities. I'm looking forward to seeing how he adjusts on bouncy tracks. We did notice a few times in the IPL that he's a very hard hitter of the ball - [with the] pull shots in particular."

He, however, also put out the warning signs for Jaiswal against the three world-class seamers Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.

"But that'll be challenged by three world-class speedsters, assuming they're all fit, and on much bigger grounds as well - grounds where it has to almost be the perfect contact for that ball to sail over for six. You can get caught easily, three-quarters of the way in the fence. So they have little adjustments that world-class players like Jaiswal will make for sure,” Hayden added.

Australia's home advantage ‘has been taken away quite a lot’, says Hayden as Border-Gavaskar series nears

Pat Cummins has won mostly everything since becoming the Australian Test captain, but one eluded from his decorated trophy cabinet is a Border-Gavaskar series. With Team India travelling Down Under for five Tests later this year, Cummins has his eyes set on beating them. Ahead of this marquee five-match Test series, Cummins has outlined his preparation plans, which, for now, doesn’t include cricket.

Cummins has been on the go ever since early last year, and with the crucial India Tests coming up, he has decided to sideline cricket for a while, concentrating on resting entirely.

The Australia pacer just completed his stint in the USA's Major League Cricket (MLC), with Cricket Australia (CA) handing him extended rest for the next two months to manage his workload.

"Everyone that comes back after a break is a little bit fresher; you never regret it," Cummins said during a chat with Fox Sports.

"I've basically been bowling non-stop since the World Test Championship final, nearly 18 months ago. This gives me a good seven or eight weeks completely off bowling so the body can recover, then you start building up again for the summer. "It means you can hopefully bowl for a little bit longer, maintaining pace is a bit easier, makes you less susceptible to injuries," he added.

Over the past year, Cummins has been part of multiple away bilateral tours, twin home Test series against Pakistan and West Indies and three ICC tournaments – WTC Final 2023 (England), ODI World Cup 2023 (India) and T20 World Cup 2024 in the Caribbean; not to forget the away Ashes last year.

Though he has been on the winning side most times, Cummins admits feeling soreness in his body.

"I'm very sore today after a week of the gym. Hamstrings, even ankles, kind of build up over months of bowling, but you can't really nail it while you're in the midst of the season," Cummins noted. "I'll be doing lots of gym, some running, a lot of rehab exercise that you just can't really fit in the middle of the season."

Cummins on Border-Gavaskar series

Looking forward to the India Tests, Cummins said it (BGT) is one trophy he and most of his current teammates haven’t won, something he wishes to tick off.

"It's the trophy I haven't won before... this is the one trophy a lot of our group haven't ticked off," Cummins said.

"We've achieved some amazing things over the last few years as a Test group. You kind of back yourself to win every series at home. I think you need to try and be up there in the upper echelon of teams. "That's what lies ahead of us this summer. They (India) are a really good side. We play them quite a lot, we know them really well, but we feel like we're really well placed also," he added.

Australia last won the BGT almost ten years ago, in 2014/15, when they beat India 2-0 at home. Since then, they have lost twice at home, in addition to suffering beatings in India.

Australia Test captain Pat Cummins outlines plan for home Tests against India - ‘We are well placed this time’

Ace spinner Nathan Lyon admits Australia has ‘ten years of unfinished business’ to deal with against the superstar-studded Indian Test Team. Australia last won the Border-Gavaskar trophy at home in 2014/15, when they beat India 2-0; however, since then, they have failed to put their hands on the trophy, having lost at home twice, in addition to facing hammering on a couple of away tours.

Admitting that the touring Indian Test side is perhaps the best in world cricket, Lyon said he is as hungry as ever to let the monkey off his back and win a Test series against them this time.

India will tour Australia for five Tests starting in late November.

"It's been ten years of unfinished business; it's been a long time, and I know we're extremely hungry to turn things around, especially here at home," Lyon said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

"Don't get me wrong, India is an absolute superstar side, and extremely challenging, but I'm extremely hungry to turn things around and make sure we get that trophy back.

"Feel like we are a different team to a couple of years ago, we are on a journey of becoming a great Australian cricket team. We're definitely not there, but we are along that journey and have been playing some decent cricket,” he continued.

Lyon lauds Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s brief run at the top in Tests has left Lyon stunned by his cricketing abilities, and despite him picking 530 Test wickets, the traditional off-spinner knows the challenge while going against the emerging superstar.

Lyon also admitted speaking to England spinner Tom Hartley, whom he shared the dressing room with during their latest stints with Lancashire in the County Championship, about how he planned bowling against this daunting Indian Test side during the away series early this year.

"I haven't come across him [Jaiswal] yet, but that will be a massive challenge for all us bowlers," Lyon said.

"The way he played against England, I watched that quite closely and thought that was quite amazing. I had some really good chats with Tom Hartley about different ways he went about it to different guys, which I found quite interesting."

"I love talking about cricket, so if I can talk to someone who has played Test cricket, I might be able to pick up something I'm not aware of. There's so much knowledge floating around this game that we can always tap into," he continued.
