India's Dhruv Jurel caught a blinder of a catch on day 4 (Monday, Nov 25) of the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test in Perth, Australia. Jurel, who is a wicketkeeper by skill, was fielding at short-leg position—one of the hardest places to field on the cricket field.

The catch taken by Jurel was just at the stroke of tea on day 4 off off-spinner Washington Sundar's ball to dismiss Aussie Mitchell Starc as the eighth wicket in Australia's second innings.

BGT 2024-25, Perth Test: WATCH | Dhruv Jurel takes a BLINDER at short-leg to dismiss Mitchell Starc

India has done the unthinkable by beating Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth by 295 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match BGT 2024/25. Captain Jasprit Bumrah starred with the ball, picking eight wickets in the game, as India took one step closer to directly qualifying for the WTC Final 2025.
Chasing 534, Australia knew it was never going to be easy, and Bumrah’s twin strike later on day three made things even worse for the hosts, who were reeling at 12 for three at stumps. The left-handed opener looked clueless since the offset, mistiming a pull shot only for Rishabh Pant to pluck it. Mohammed Siraj picked his second wicket of the day with Steve Smith on 17, with Australia going into lunch on 104 for five.

BGT 2024-25: 'Kohli doesn't need us...,' says India skipper Jasprit Bumrah after 295-run win in Perth Test

India's stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah lauded the national side's remarkable comeback, from being 150 all-out, to win the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) opening Test versus Australia at Perth on Monday (Nov. 25). Opting to bat first, India got dismissed for 150, but Bumrah-led bowling attack rose to the occasion and skittled out Australia for 104, taking a 46-run lead. Bumrah stood tall with 5 for 30. Following this, India rode on Yashasvi Jaiswal (161), KL Rahul (77) and Virat Kohli's 100* to declare at 487-6, setting a mammoth 534-run target. Eventually, Pat Cummins-led Australia folded up for 238 on Day 4, on Monday and lost by 295 runs. Bumrah was all praise for the fightback staged by his team and lauded both Jaiswal and Kohli in particular.

'Were put under pressure in the first innings, but the way we responded...'

After the win, Bumrah said in the post-match presentation, "Very happy with the beginning. Were put under pressure in the first innings, but the way we responded after that - very proud. Played here in 2018. I remember that when you start here, the wicket is a little soft, and then it gets quicker and quicker. Was relying on that experience. This wicket was a little less spicy than the last one. We were really well prepared, so I was telling everyone to have faith in their process and ability."

On challenging wickets it's hard to judge if a batsman is in form. He was looking good in the nets."

Bumrah himself had a great run, returning with match figures of 8 for 72. This became his first Test win as captain.

Coming into this series, India had several questions to answer owing to the poor form of Kohli, KL Rahul, etc. whereas Rohit was set to miss the game due to paternity leave. BGT, Perth Test, Day 4: Mohammed Siraj strikes twice in first session as India inch closer to win

India are sitting on top at the moment in the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test after taking a 200-plus-run lead in Perth. India didn't lose a single wicket on Saturday (Nov 23) - the second day of the Test after being all-out for 150 on day 1 itself within two sessions.

The pitch, which saw 17 wickets falling in total on the first day, eased out considerably on day 2 and only three wickets fell on the day that too in the first session.

The pitch had about 12mm of grass cover - giving it a lush green look on day 1. With the rain predicted in the area leading up to the Test, the curator may have not watered the pitch enough in order to prevent it from becoming damp and soft, should it rain.

Kohli is now third among active cricketers behind England's Joe Root (35) and Aussie Steve Smith (32) & NZ's Kane Williamson (32) for most Test hundreds. For India, Kohli has the fourth-most Test hundreds in his career behind Sachin (49), Rahul Dravid (36) and Sunil Gavaskar (34). He is only the second player in Test history to convert his first four hundreds into 150s with the other being former SA skipper Graeme Smith. Jaiswal also went past the likes of Pakistan's Javed Miandad, West Indian Brian Lara, and Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene, who all converted their first three Test hundreds into 150s. As for the match, India declared their second innings at 487/6 and set up a target of 534 for Australia to chase down. India's stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah, who had taken 5/30 in the first innings, took two more wickets in the second innings as Australia were pinned down at 12/3 by the close of play.

BGT 2024-25, Perth Test: Virat Kohli goes past Don Bradman, Jaiswal equals Graeme Smith with hundred

There is nothing India can do wrong against Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth. After dominating with the bat, scoring a whopping 487 for six declared in their second innings, India picked up three wickets before stumps on day three to put Australia’s back against the wall. While Yashasvi Jaiswal made headlines for his maiden Test hundred Down Under, Virat Kohli’s 30th Test century was the cherry on the cake.

Captain Jasprit Bumrah picked up two wickets before stumps on day three, including debutant Nathan McSweeney on a duck and Marnus Labuschagne on three. Siraj claimed the wicket of Pat Cummins.

Australia now need 522 more runs to win the first Test with seven wickets remaining.

Jaiswal, Kohli mat Australia

After India folded up for 150 in the first innings, they looked like surrendering the BGT opener even before the IPL 2025 mega auction would begin. Things changed quickly, as the visitors wrapped up Australia on a mere 104, with Bumrah picking a five-for.

There is no stopping Yashasvi Jaiswal in Perth, as the Indian opener remains unbeaten on 141, with India taking a 321-run lead at lunch on day three of the first Test against Australia. Jaiswal completed his maiden Test hundred Down Under with a six off Josh Hazlewood, while KL Rahul departed on a well-made 77 early in the day. Mitchell Starc provided the only breakthrough for the Aussies, but bowlers struggled otherwise.

India began proceedings on day three similarly to how they wrapped it up the previous evening, by scoring runs. Not only were KL and Jaiswal successful in hitting boundaries at will as the pitch lost its spice over the past three sessions, but they also kept the scoring rate ticking with quick ones and twos.

The pair completed the 200-run opening stand, breaking several records with that, and soon after, Jaiswal hammered his first hundred against Australia at their home. However, Rahul, looking settled in the middle, gave away his wicket to Starc, caught behind on 77, as the hosts enjoyed the moment of relief.

Padikkal joined Jaiswal, with both left-handers making merry on a dryer Perth pitch, mounting trouble on the Aussies. Though Australia tried several options in Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head, they failed to pick another wicket, making it just one in three sessions in the first BGT Test.

With India’s scorecard reading 275 for one in 84 overs, they have plenty of time to pile up runs and misery on the hosts.

Meanwhile, social media was filled with congratulatory messages for Jaiswal, look at some of the reactions -

ALSO READ: BGT 2024-25: Explained | How Perth pitch suddenly became easier to bat on day 2 India began proceedings on day three similarly to how they wrapped it up the previous evening, by scoring runs. Meanwhile, social media was filled with congratulatory messages for Jaiswal, look at some of the reactions - What an extraordinary moment to watch Yashaswi Jaiswal reach his hundred! BGT - Perth Test, Day 3: Yashasvi Jaiswal nears 150 as India’s lead cross 320 at lunch

Australia coach Andrew McDonald acknowledged that the wicket at Perth has changed after second day's play in the first Border-Gavaskar trophy (BGT) Test. The change in pitch led to batting becoming a lot easier on Saturday (Nov 23) in comparison to Day 1 of the Test (Nov 22) and India took full advantage of that.

"I think the wicket has changed considerably. If you look at the seam and swing, it was down compared to yesterday (when) it was difficult work," said McDonald at the end of the day's play.

"The surface looked considerably drier today, and it dried out fairly quickly. We thought there may have been a little bit more there, so if you want to say it we were a little bit surprised there wasn't as much seam movement or swing. And I think the bowlers were presenting the seam in a similar fashion to what they were yesterday so I think the conditions may have had some say in that," he added.

The pitch, which saw 17 wickets falling on the first day, eased out considerably on Saturday (Nov 23) and only three wickets fell on the day that too in the first session.

India finished the day firmly on top after the first two days of cricket. The Indian bowlers, especially Jasprit Bumrah, did a wonderful job of restricting Australia to 104 after posting 150 in their first innings.

Bumrah took 5/30, his ninth away Test five-for, his 11th overall, surpassing several former greats, including Sir Andy Roberts, Allan Donald, Zaheer Khan and Denis Lillee.

The visitors ended the day with 218 runs ahead in the second innings including the first 46-run first innings lead without losing a single wicket.

Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul stitched together an unbeaten 172 runs for the first wicket – the second-highest for India in Tests in Australia. Jaiswal was not out 90 by the end of the day's play while Rahul was unbeaten on 62.

BGT 2024-25, Perth Test: 'Little bit surprised...,' Aussie coach on 'changed wicket' after India take charge

India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal hit Aussie spinner Nathan Lyon for a 100-metre six on Day 2 of the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test in Perth, Australia. During Pant's stay in the middle, the swashbuckling left-hander smacked Australian captain Pat Cummins for a six, sweeping one over the fine-leg boundary. Despite this, the 27-year-old couldn't stay in the middle for long as Cummins had the last laugh by outfoxing him. The left-hander edged one to the slips where Steve Smith plucked an easy catch. Apart from Pant and Reddy's 48-run stand, for the seventh wicket, nothing clicked for India as they bundled out for 150 in 49.4 overs. However, they have bounced back in style with the ball as Jasprit Bumrah-led India has reduced Australia to 37 for 4 at the time of publishing this report. The visitors will have to dismiss the Aussies for a low score to stay alive in the contest. India are without regular captain Rohit Sharma for the Perth Test. He missed out due to the birth of his second child but will join the Indian squad on Nov 24 (Sunday).

Jasprit Bumrah-led India have opted to bat first in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 series opener at the Perth Stadium, Perth on Friday (Nov 22). Nitish Reddy and Harshit Rana have been included in the playing XI but the visitors have no R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja as Washington Sundar, who had a great run versus New Zealand in the home series last month, is the lone spinner for the visitors.

At the coin toss, stand-in captain Bumrah said, "We are going to bat first, looks like a good wicket. Very confident with our preparation. We played a Test match here in 2018 so we know what to expect. The wicket gets quicker. Nitish makes his debut. We have 4 quicks and Washi is the lone spinner."

It was reported earlier that India would go in with Nitish Reddy and Harshit. The latter, who plays for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL, impressed one and all in the practice sessions Down Under whereas Nitish will serve as the fourth pacer, along with his handy batting abilities.

Harshit and Nitish were presented with their Test caps by Ashwin and Virat Kohli, respectively. While this is Harshit's international debut, Nitish -- one of the stars for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2024 -- made his T20I debut early this year and was impressive.

India are without regular captain Rohit Sharma, who missed out due to the birth of his second child. Hitman will join the Indian squad on Nov 24 (Sunday) in Perth.

Australia captain Pat Cummins Thursday urged new opener Nathan McSweeney not to try and emulate swashbuckling David Warner, while admitting his team had unfinished business with India. The uncapped McSweeney will make his Test bow at Perth Stadium on Friday, parachuted in at the top of the order alongside Usman Khawaja after Warner's retirement this year. He has big shoes to fill, and goes into the game having only opened once before at first-class level, in a warm-up Australia A match this month.

Cummins said he must be himself when he fronts a world-class Indian attack spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah on what is expected to be a fiery pitch. "Davey is very hard to replace in many ways, but I think the most important thing for someone like Nath coming in is to play his own game," he said. "He doesn't need to strike at 80 like Davey did if that's not his game."

Other than McSweeney, Australia has a settled side which is on a mission to win their first Test series against India in almost a decade. Only Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon and Steve Smith remain from the squad that last won in Australia back in 2014-15.

Since then they have slumped to four straight Border-Gavaskar series losses, including two at home. "It's kind of one of the last things to tick off for a lot of us," Cummins told reporters of beating their big rival. "Almost every challenge that we've had thrown with us over the last few years we've stepped up and done well. "To do that for another year, another home summer, would kind of cement this."

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has backed star batters Virat Kohli and Steve Smith to come good in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). India and Australia will face each other in a five-match Test series with the World Test Championship (WTC) final qualification on the agenda. However, it is the form of the two star batters concerning the management with Virat going over a year without an international hundred.

Ponting backs Kohli, Smith to come good

“I still think they’ve got plenty of time to find their best,” Ponting told Sydney Morning Herald in an interview. “It might be Smudge’s time actually, after that experiment up the top. He’s back down in his more comfortable spot at No.4, which I was on record saying I don’t think he should have moved, it should have been an opener who played at that stage.”

Both Smith and Kohli have endured a tough last 12 months with bat. Calls for them to be dropped from the squad IS now making rounds. Smith has not scored an international ton since the 2023 Ashes when he got one at Lord’s while Kohli has also been on the slide. All eyes will be on both the players as BGT will have a huge impact on the ratings for the WTC final in June 2025.

For Ponting, things will be difficult to manage as he will have to travel for the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) mega auction on Sunday despite being part of the commentary team for the Perth Test. Ponting is the head coach of Punjab Kings and will have a big role to play as the franchise retained only two players during the retention window.

BGT 2024/25: Ricky Ponting backs Virat Kohli, Steve Smith to come good, says 'they’ve got plenty of time'

The time has come for the talks to end and action to begin. After countless days of buildup to the marquee Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) between India and Australia, the first Test will get underway at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Friday (Nov. 22). With stakes at an all-time high, considering the spot in the WTC Final on the line, this five-match series promises to be a blockbuster. Here is the match preview of the first Test between India and Australia.

Perth Test preview

India and Australia locking horns in whites anywhere worldwide is a treat for fans, broadcasters, statisticians, and, more importantly, history. With Australia hosting this BGT, being the ranked number one Test side and the team not to win a Test series at home against India since 2014/15, they have plenty to play for.

ALSO READ: ‘Rohit’s return to cause ‘disruption’ in Indian camp’ – Ponting echoes Gavaskar’s remarks on BGT captaincy

The hosts had top-order woes to solve before this series, and following two shadow matches between Australia A and India A, they zeroed in on uncapped Nathan McSweeney as Usman Khawaja’s opening partner for the series opener. Though Cameron Green is out for six months, having undergone back surgery, Australia’s batting order looks sorted.

Captain Pat Cummins will lead the three-men pace attack in the bowling department, with Mitchell Starc and a surprise package in Scott Boland sharing duties; Nathan Lyon, Australia’s highest wicket-taker in this attack, will play as the lone spinner.

Considering Australia has never lost a Test at the Optus Stadium, with Marnus Labuschagne averaging above 100 with the bat, they will bank on their batting to stand tall in the first Test.

On the other hand, India had plenty of issues to deal with ahead of the opener after suffering a maiden whitewash at home against New Zealand; although they tried answering all questions, a few were left unattended. With regular skipper Rohit Sharma, new number three Shubman Gill, and ace seamer Mohammed Shami all out for different reasons, the visitors are likely playing two debutants in Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana.

Meanwhile, several reports suggested that two new faces, Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel, will be part of the XI, with ace all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin preferred over Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja.

Besides, with no Rohit around, Jasprit Bumrah will captain India in the first match, leading the pace attack, including Mohammed Siraj.

Result Prediction

Australia will head into the series opener as favourites, although Team India can still challenge them on the bouncy Perth wicket, with newcomers raring to go.

BGT 2024/25: The Big Series, Australia vs India - Perth Test match preview and result prediction

Former Australia captain and Test great Ricky Ponting feels Rohit Sharma’s return to the Indian side could potentially disrupt the Indian camp, echoing Sunil Gavaskar’s remarks on why India should have just one captain throughout the series. Rohit remained unavailable for the Perth Test for personal reasons, with the BCCI naming ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah the captain for the BGT opener at the Optus Stadium.

Rohit, however, has informed the Indian Cricket Board about his travel schedule, with a report in Cricbuzz claiming that the Indian skipper will link up with the squad in Perth during the first Test on November 24 (Sunday). He will be available for selection for the second game in Adelaide, a Day/Night Test, starting December 6, and will play the pink-ball warm-up tie in Canberra in the leadup to the second game.

Meanwhile, following Gavaskar’s comments on why Bumrah should lead India in all matches regardless of Rohit’s travel stance and availability status for all games, which irked plenty of fans, including Rohit’s wife, Ritika Sajdeh, who gave a telling reaction to the India great, uttered same sentiments, saying his addition to the side and in the leadership group will cause some confusion among the group.

Ponting said the players knew about Rohit’s stance before and that Bumrah would lead India in Perth, adding, “I just think there’s potential for more disruption through their campaign with Sharma coming back and whatever else. So I’ll stick with it (3-1 verdict in favour of Australia).”

“India will be pretty certain of what team they’re going to play (in Perth). They’ve known for a while that Rohit probably wasn’t going to be here. They’ve probably known for a while that Bumrah was going to be captain. So they’ve probably known what holes they’ve needed to fill. So they’ll be reasonably settled,” Ponting said on The ICC Review ahead of the first Test in Perth starting Friday (Nov 22).

Gavaskar’s remarks

During a chat with Sports Tak earlier, Gavaskar explained why India must have just captain throughout the marquee series.

“Captain should play the opening Test. It would have been different had he been injured. But if a captain is not available right in the first Test match of the series, then it would put a lot of pressure on the deputy leader and that is not easy.

“There should be clarity because we lost 0-3 against New Zealand, so the captain has to be there. Indian cricket is the most important thing. Had India won the New Zealand series 3-0, it would have been a different case.” Gavaskar said.

Meanwhile, India could play two debutants in Perth, with several reports suggesting that Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana are likely to play the series opener.

Ponting said the players knew about Rohit’s stance before and that Bumrah would lead India in Perth, adding, “I just think there’s potential for more disruption through their campaign with Sharma coming back and whatever else. So I’ll stick with it (3-1 verdict in favour of Australia).” “India will be pretty certain of what team they’re going to play (in Perth). ‘Rohit’s return to cause ‘disruption’ in Indian camp’ – Ponting echoes Gavaskar’s remarks on BGT captaincy

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is not ready to discount the visiting team’s chances of pulling off a win against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy starting Friday (Nov. 22). Having done it not once but twice in the past two outings, Ganguly knows what the Indian Team can do when the chips are down.

Unlike the last time, when India was without their star players in Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Jasprit Bumrah, by the time of the fourth Test, three of the four will likely feature in the BGT opener at the Optus Stadium in Perth this time; with Rohit missing the first game for personal reasons, and ace seamer Bumrah captaining India in his absence.

Chatting with former cricket greats England’s Michael Vaughan and Australia’s Adam Gilchrist on the Club Prairie Fire podcast, Ganguly, while replying to their predictions of Australia steamrolling India in BGT 2024-2025, said he would not predict the result, believing India can shock the world by beginning the series on a high despite the generic conscious backing Australia to break the walls.

"Let's see. I don't rule India out. When they went in 2021, we got all out for 36 in Adelaide. We had lost [Virat] Kohli, and by the time we went to Brisbane, there wtthat as no Kohli, no Rohit Sharma, no Jasprit Bumrah, no Ravichandran Ashwin, and these guys came back and beat a top-notch Australian side. There's tremendous talent in India," Ganguly replied to Vaughan and Gilchrist on the Club Prairie Fire podcast.

Ganguly reminded the two hosts of what the Indian bench strength pulled off the last time, adding that none had backed stars-less India to win in Brisbane, chasing 330 plus on day five.

"I wouldn't predict the series yet because, to be honest, because the last two tours, we beat them both the times. Did anybody think on Day 5 in Brisbane, when India had to get 330, Rishabh Pant played that knock and won them the match? Not just Pant but Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur as well. Shubman Gill contributed for India to win,” the former captain continued.

‘1-1 after Adelaide game’

Having surrendered two BGTs at home previously, Australia would be raring to go against the second-ranked Indian Team this time. The hosts, however, planned a tougher schedule this time, with the Optus Stadium in Perth hosting the opener, Adelaide (venue for the second Test) the Day/Night clash and Gabba in Brisbane for the third game before the action moves to Melbourne and Sydney.

Despite the odds against them, Ganguly feels this Indian team can win one of the first two matches, setting up a cracker of a series.

"It might well be that by the time the Adelaide Test finishes, it's 1-1, and then you go to Melbourne and Brisbane and Sydney, and the series gets decided. If you look at the 2018 series, it rained in Sydney, and India were on the verge of winning that Test as well. We could have won that series 3-1.

“These are some fearless players. Let's keep our fingers crossed. I think it's going to be a fascinating series. Weather permitting, all five Test matches will have a decision, and it can go any way," Ganguly concluded.

BGT: Ganguly not ready to discount India despite Aussie wave; reminds Vaughan, Gilchrist of 2020/21 results

The Indian captain for the Perth Test against Australia, Jasprit Bumrah, dropped a major hint at Mohammed Shami’s potential return to the Test side amid fitness concerns.

Shami missed all on-field action since last year's home World Cup due to an ankle injury and resumed competitive cricket last week, playing for Bengal in the prestigious Ranji Trophy tournament, picking seven wickets against Madhya Pradesh. Though he showed glimpses of a full-fit Shami by bowling tight lines during his comeback game, the right-arm seamer is closing in on returning to his best, with the Indian Team management keeping a keen eye on it.

Speaking on the same on the sidelines of the first BGT Test at the Optus Stadium starting Friday (Nov 22), India skipper Bumrah said, "Shami bhai has started to play cricket, and obviously, he is an integral part of this team. I'm sure the management is also keeping a keen eye (on him). Hopefully, things fall in place. If everything goes well, you might see him here as well," Bumrah noted in the pre-match presser in Perth.

Meanwhile, Bumrah is leading India in Rohit Sharma’s absence, who is in India with his family after the birth of his second child. Rohit will link up with the Indian Team ahead of the second Test in Adelaide, a Day-Night Test game, starting December 6.

Per several reports, the BCCI and the management are keen on having Shami on board at some point during this marquee five-match series, concluding with the final Test at the SCG in Sydney early next year. Should Shami attain full fitness in the meantime, he would likely get added to the Test side, increasing his chances of playing his first away BGT game since breaking his wrist in Adelaide the last time.

Rana, Ashwin to play in Perth

Owing to an injury crisis and unavailability of some star players, the visitors could play a new-look Indian Team in the BGT opener, with several reports claiming two uncapped players to make the cut. While all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy is one name everyone’s praising, the sources close to the information claim that lanky pacer Harshit Rana could also make his Test debut.

Besides, ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s highest wicket-taker in this attack, will play ahead of two bowling all-rounders, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar.

Also, in the absence of Shubman Gill, who is out with a broken thumb, India will likely play Devdutt Padikkal at number three, with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal to open. Outside of Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant in the middle order, India might play Dhruv Jurel ahead of Sarfaraz Khan at number six; simultaneously, Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj spearhead the pace attack.

BGT: Perth Test skipper Bumrah hints at Mohammed Shami’s potential return, says ‘if all goes well…’

Ahead of the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), which gets underway on Friday (Nov. 22) in Perth, former Indian cricketer and coach Ravi Shastri has advised India head coach Gautam Gambhir to not make knee-jerk decisions during the tough Australia series. Gambhir is under pressure heading into the BGT following India getting whitewashed by New Zealand in a three-match Test series at home last month. Shastri has, however, suggested Gambhir take time to know his players and respect the sensibilities of each individual for India to perform well Down Under.

Shastri said in the Star Sports press room, "I think the first thing would be to be calm, you know, don't let outside elements influence you in any way. Because of that, don't get into a position where knee-jerk reactions happen. Get to understand your players. You will see them in bad situations, you'll see them in India, you'll see them overseas; you know, you will, notice what it takes for a player to click. You will understand situations of a team where a certain player might be better than the other."

Shastri further added, "It took me some time to understand everyone. He might have seen them from the outside of the IPL, and he might have sat with a few players in the dressing room when he played the game, but there are a lot of other players and they come from different mindsets, different cultures, and different parts of the country. And for you to dig deep and understand their mindsets would be the most important thing. There could be a player, you know, who's an introvert, but actually, if you push him out there and give him the confidence, he could be a match-winner for you."

Shastri became the first-ever Asian coach to win a Test series in Australia when India beat the Aussies 2-1 in 2018/19. Under him, a second-stringed Indian team replicated the same during the 2020/21 tour. It will be interesting to see if India wins three back-to-back series in Australia, this time under the coaching of Gambhir. The five-match Test series kicks off in Perth, where India will be without regular captain Rohit Sharma, who is on paternity leave).
