The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Thursday that the women’s cricket team players will now receive the same match fees as their male counterparts. The pay parity has been a major point of contention around the world in the past few years, but BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed that the match fees will be similar for both sides in all three formats of the game.

The Indian women’s cricket team have enjoyed a rich vein of form in the recent past with multiple successes on the international stage. The side won the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 and followed it up with a historic ODI series win over England and a record Asia Cup triumph.

While the latest announcement was a huge initiative towards addressing the pay disparity between the players of the two teams, it is only the first step. When it comes to revenue sharing and central contracts, the gap remains massive – both in terms of money and exposure.

Every year, BCCI pays 26 per cent of its annual revenue to the players.

13 per cent of the revenue is given to men’s international team players, 10.3 per cent to domestic cricketers and just 2.7 per cent is earmarked for junior players and women cricketers.

The men’s team cricketers are divided into four categories – Grade A+ (around $850,000), Grade B (around $607,000), Grade C (around $364,000) and Grade D (around $121,000).

In a stark contrast, the highest paid women cricketers get a yearly contract worth a bit more than $60,000. To put in simpler terms, one of the highest paid women cricketers in India right now – opener Smriti Mandhana – holds the same contract that Sachin Tendulkar would have had in 2004.

However, things have taken a turn lately. The first Women’s IPL is stated to take place next year and with the match fee disparity getting abolished, Indian cricket seems to be moving towards the right direction at this point.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah recently announced the Indian cricket team will not be travelling to Pakistan for the Asia Cup 2023 and the tournament will be shifted to a neutral venue. Ever since his statement, Shah, who is also the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), has been criticised by several former Pakistan cricketers.

In the wake of the controversy, legendary Pakistan cricketer Wasim Akram has also hit back at Shah for his comments and said India cannot dictate the way Pakistan wants to play their cricket. Akram said Shah should have held a meeting with the PCB and the board of the Asian Cricket Council before making a statement on the venue of the Asia Cup 2023.

"It was a brilliant statement from our cricket board. India can't dictate how Pakistan plays their cricket. Pakistan have started hosting teams after 10-15 years now. I'm an ex-cricketer, sportsperson, I don't know what's happening on the political front. But communication is important. If Jay Shah had to say something, he should have called the PCB chairman, there should have been a meeting of the Asian Cricket Council. He should have put forth his idea and there should have been a discussion,” Akram said on A-Sports.

“You can't just stand up and say we are not travelling when the Asian Cricket Council awarded the hosting rights to Pakistan.That's not fair,” he added.

After the AGM, Shah -- who is also Asian Cricket Council's (ACC) -- revealed that the next year's Asia Cup won't be held in Pakistan as India can't travel to the neighbouring country due to the strained political relations between both nations. Hence, he confirmed that a neutral venue will once again host the Asia Cup, as was the case during this year's edition (held in the UAE with eventful winners Sri Lanka as hosts).&nbsp;

Since then, Pakistan's former cricketers and even their board PCB have strongly reacted to the ACC chief's claims. Now, veteran keeper-batter Kamran Akmal also joined the bandwagon and has even suggested Team Pakistan to boycott India at all levels, including the upcoming T20 World Cup clash on October 23 (Sunday) at the MCG, Melbourne.

“I believe Jay Shah’s statement was unexpected, and since he attended the Pakistan-India game during this year’s Asia Cup, he should reserve politics for his opposition and avoid dragging it into sports,” Kamran told ARY news.

“The PCB has noted with surprise and disappointment of yesterday’s comments made by the ACC President Mr Jay Shah with regards to shifting of next year’s Asia Cup to a neutral venue. The comments were made without any discussion or consultation with the Board of the Asian Cricket Council or the Pakistan Cricket Board (event host) and without any thoughts towards their long-term consequences and implications."

"After having presided over the ACC meeting during which Pakistan was awarded the ACC Asia Cup with an overwhelming support and response from the ACC Board Members, Mr Shah’s statement of shifting of the ACC Asia Cup has clearly been made unilaterally. This is contrary to the philosophy and spirit for which the Asian Cricket Council was formed in September 1983 – a united Asian cricket body to safeguard the interests of the its Members and organise, develop, and promote the game of cricket in Asia."

The statement added, "The overall impact of such statements have the potential to split the Asian and international cricketing communities, and can impact Pakistan’s visit to India for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and future ICC Events in India in the 2024-2031 cycle.

“The PCB has to date not received any official communication or clarification from the ACC on the statement of the ACC President. As such, the PCB has now requested the Asian Cricket Council to convene an emergency meeting of its Board as soon as practically possible to discuss this important and sensitive matter.”

As of now, a venue for Asia Cup 2023 edition is expected to be finalised in the near future whereas India are set to host next year's ODJ World Cup. However, Pakistan's participation is doubtful following PCB's reaction.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, (October 18), a major change in leadership took place at the BCCI with Roger Binny taking over as the board's 36th President, after Sourav Ganguly's exit. The former Indian captain had attained the top post in late 2019.&nbsp;

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, however, resumed his second innings and made a massive claim while interacting with the reporters after the board's 91st Annual General Meeting (AGM). Shah, who is also Asian Cricket Council's (ACC) chief, revealed that the 2023 Asia Cup won't be held in Pakistan as India won't travel to their neighbouring country.&nbsp;

"The Asia Cup 2023 will be held at a neutral venue. I am saying this as ACC President. We [India] can't go there [to Pakistan], they can't come here. In the past also, Asia Cup has been played at a neutral venue," Shah told the media.

Following this, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have reportedly threatened to boycott the 2023 ODI World Cup, to be held in India after the 50-over Asia Cup. Now, former Pakistan all-rounder and captain Shahid Afridi joined the bandwagon and slammed Shah for his untimely comments.&nbsp;

“The General Body approved to conduct the Women’s Indian Premier League,” BCCI said in a release after the AGM.

Five teams will be part of the competition to start with and a decision on how the teams will be sold has not been made yet. The five teams can be picked zone-wise or on the basis of individual cities like in the men's IPL. The tournament is likely to be held in March next year after the Women's T20 World Cup.

As per a report in ESPNCricinfo, each team will have a roster of 18 players and will be allowed to pick a maximum of only six overseas players in their squad. However, unlike the men's IP where not more than four foreigners are allowed in the playing XI, five overseas players can be part of the playing XI in the Women's IPL.

The BCCI has reportedly also made it mandatory for each team in the Women's IPL to have at least one overseas player from an associate nation. The tournament is likely to have a total of 22 matches and the final call on the schedule and venue will be taken later.
