The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah opened up the lid on Rahul Dravid’s tenure as the coach of the national men’s team after the conclusion of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) auctions. There is no relation between the two, and it would be unfair to say he wasn’t in top shape for the World Cup or to suggest that he is injury-prone.”

“He made a successful comeback from the back injury, has been in superb shape, and it was just an unfortunate incident,” the source added.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is said to have replaced veteran Hugh Edmeades with Mallika Sagar as the official auctioneer for the IPL 2024 mini-auction scheduled on Tuesday (Dec 19) in Dubai. As per latest reports, the Indian board has informed Edmeades that his services are not required anymore for the one-day event later in the month.

The BCCI roped in Mallika Sagar – the auctioneer for the Women’s Premier League (WPL), subject to her availability.&nbsp;

Since replacing Richard Madley in 2018 as the official IPL auctioneer, Edmeades has conducted all auctions.&nbsp;

Last year, during the mega-auction at the ITC Gardenia Hotel in Bengaluru, Edmeades collapsed on the floor in the ballroom due to “postural hypotension”. While the medical staff at the venue attended to him immediately, the BCCI office-bearers requested national anchor Charu Sharma to fill in for Edmeades.&nbsp;

After pondering who should coach the men’s team if BCCI decides against resigning Dravid again, several names popped up, with NCA head VVS Laxman being the front-runner.&nbsp;However, following intense discussions with all parties involved, the Indian board re-appointed the Dravid-led staff with one agenda - winning next year’s T20 World Cup.

Per the latest reports, the BCCI is not looking at implementing any change before the T20 World Cup scheduled in June in the West Indies and the USA thus far.

While the next ODI World Cup is four years away, the 2025 Champions Trophy in February-March would be the 50-over event the BCCI would set its eyes on after what transpired in the home World Cup final in Ahmedabad. &nbsp;

"Dravid and his support staff have been asked to focus on the T20 World Cup as of now. The priority is to win that tournament in the US and Caribbean. The long-term planning can wait. Things will be taken forward from there. Their services will be on a pro-rata business as of now till modalities are formalised," a BCCI source told Times of India (TOI).

Following the conclusion of the 2023 World Cup, contracts were expiring for coaching staff of Rahul Dravid (head coach), Paras Mhambrey (bowling coach), Vikram Rathour (batting coach) and T Dilip (fielding coach). As per a report of news agency PTI, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf and COO Salman Naseer met the ICC executive board in Ahmedabad to discuss uncertainty surrounding the venue of the 2025 Champions Trophy.&nbsp;

“Pakistani officials discussed the probability of the Indian board (BCCI) again refusing to send its team to Pakistan and made it clear that in any given situation, the ICC must avoid taking unilateral decisions on the tournament,” a source told PTI.

The PCB's top bosses argue that several top teams have toured Pakistan in the past two years, including England, New Zealand and Australia, without any team facing or complaining about security concerns.&nbsp;

They added that if India insists on complaining on security grounds, the ICC must appoint an independent security agency, which could liaise with the Pakistan government and their security officials to assess the situation of the participating teams, including India.

“The PCB officials said many top teams had toured Pakistan in the last two years without any security concerns. They also made it clear that in case of India not sending its team and its matches being moved to another country, then the ICC must compensate Pakistan for this,” the source added.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Rahul Dravid engaged in an intense discussion lately to determine his role as the coach of the Indian Cricket Team going forward. With the conclusion of the World Cup 2023, Rahul Dravid-led coaching staff’s two-year tenure ended. While Dravid is said to be keen on pushing for an extended run, the higher-ups in the Indian Cricket Board are inclined towards appointing a new head coach.

While several names are being discussed internally, the latest reports suggest that the National Cricket Academy (NCA) head and veteran VVS Laxman is the strongest contender to replace Dravid as the new India head coach. BCCI’s decision-makers want the new coach to settle and prepare the team for next year’s T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies, given it's still eight months away.

"Rahul and the BCCI had a talk about where things stand now. We will respect the decision taken by him. The general feeling is that with the T20 World Cup about 7-8 months away, there is time for a new coach to come in and build a team and set a process. He (Dravid) is quite aware of that,” a BCCI official close to the development told PTI on condition of anonymity.

The source added that the board would come up with an official statement only after considering every angle.&nbsp;

"We are also talking about whether continuity (current coach/captain combination) is needed for the (T20) WC. We are hoping to reach a decision soon so that path forward is clear," the source added.

<h2>Happy with Dravid-Rohit pair</h2>

The unnamed source even admitted the cricket board is happy with how things panned under the Rohit-Dravid leadership despite India failing to win any ICC trophy in the past two years.

While India suffered a six-wicket defeat at the hands of Australia in the recently concluded World Cup 2023, England crushed the Men in Blue by ten wickets in the 2022 World Cup semis in Adelaide. The team also went down fighting in the World Test Championship Final against the mighty Aussies.

The silver lining, however, was India’s ten-wicket Asia Cup win over Sri Lanka earlier this year.

Meanwhile, speaking on the options, the source hinted Laxman could take over the role if BCCI decides against extending Dravid’s contract.

"Options are open (for head coach). He (Laxman) is familiar with the team, players and the methods. He also has experience working with the national team," the source concluded.

Laxman is currently the head coach of the Indian Team in the ongoing home five-match T20Is.&nbsp;
