He added that “both countries have presented their respective positions,” warning that disputes of five decades could not be solved “in a single day.”Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/from-india-to-china-russia-to-pakistan-sco-nations-combined-military-strength-revealed-1756027108247">From India to China: SCO nations’ combined military strength revealed</a><h2>How did Pakistan respond?</h2>Dar said Pakistan had already addressed the 1971 questions, pointing to the 1974 tripartite talks with India and later comments by former president Pervez Musharraf in Dhaka, when he spoke about the genocide.

<h2>What agreements were signed?</h2>The meeting produced one agreement and five memorandums of understanding (MoUs). Dhaka asked for wider access to Pakistani markets under the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA), including in textiles, energy, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and IT. Islamabad, meanwhile, discussed the possibility of exporting energy to Bangladesh.<h2>Why is this visit significant?</h2>Ties between Dhaka and Islamabad had been tense under Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government, which pursued trials of those accused of collaborating with Pakistani forces in 1971. Relations began to shift after Hasina was toppled by a student-led movement in August 2024, allowing interim chief adviser Muhammad Yunus to recalibrate Bangladesh’s foreign policy as its ties with India cooled.<h2>Who else did Dar meet?</h2>Dar also met leaders of opposition and Islamist parties, including the BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party (NCP). Jamaat and NCP leaders said Pakistan must resolve the 1971 issues for ties to improve. The last Pakistani foreign minister to visit Dhaka was Hina Rabbani Khar in November 2012.

We demand answers!” They demanded to announce the names of those who died in the crash, along with compensation for the families. In addition, they also demanded the decommissioning of old and risky jets, and a change in air force training procedures, according to a report by Al Jazeera.

The military jet crash at the Milestone School and College in the Uttara area of Dhaka on Monday claimed the lives of at least 31 people, including 25 children. Most of the injuries in the crash were burns.&nbsp;

Deposed Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina has alleged that she and her sister escaped an assassination attempt on August 5 last year, moments before she left for India amid violent student protests in the country. Hasina&rsquo;s Awami League party posted an audio clip on Facebook, in which the ousted PM can be heard saying that she survived several assassination attempts throughout her political career and it was only because of God's grace that she was still alive.
"Me and my sister, Sheikh Rehana, managed to survive. We barely escaped death within a span of 20&ndash;25 minutes," Hasina said.
The Bangladeshi leader has been staying in India since she fled Dhaka in a helicopter.
In her recent allegation, the five-time PM didn&rsquo;t reveal the names of alleged conspirators.
<h2>Student protests in Bangladesh</h2>
Bangladesh was rocked by massive student protests last year, sparked following announcement of a controversial quota system in government jobs. The violence claimed over 500 lives and eventually forced the PM to abandon her residence and seek refuge in India. India has not provided political asylum to Hasina, owing to the lack of required legislation for the same. However, New Delhi reportedly extended her visa earlier this month.
The move came days after the interim government in Dhaka, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, officially asked for Hasina's extradition on December 23.

The Bangladesh government wants to prosecute Hasina on charges related to her alleged involvement in incidents of violence and disappearances during the 2024 protests, which left over 500 people dead.
Earlier on Tuesday (Jan 7), Dhaka&rsquo;s immigration department declared it had cancelled 97 passports, including the one held by Hasina. A spokesperson for the government said the move was in response to Hasina&rsquo;s role in the disappearances and killings of students.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Thursday (Dec 19) threw his weight behind Treasury Minister Tulip Siddiq after she was named in an anti-graft probe in Bangladesh. Dhaka is investigating a 2013 deal brokered by Siddiq between Bangladesh and Russia regarding setting up a nuclear power plant.
There are allegations that large sums of cash, approximately worth up to $4 billion, were embezzled in major infrastructure deals in Bangladesh, struck by the former government of Sheikh Hasina, the aunt of the UK minister.
The ongoing probe is part of a wider investigation against Hasina’s activities by Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Dhaka, Bangladesh
An inquiry commission appointed by the Bangladesh interim government said on Saturday (Dec 14) that ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina along with some high-ranking officials of her government were involved in the alleged incidents of enforced disappearances.
The five-member Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances submitted an interim report titled "Unfolding Truth" to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.
In its report, the commission implicated Hasina's involvement in as many as 3,500 cases of enforced disappearances.
"The commission has found evidence of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's involvement as the instructor in the incidents of enforced disappearances," the press wing of the office of Chief Adviser said in a statement.
It added that the deposed premier's defence adviser, Major General (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, former director general of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre Major General Ziaul Ahsan, senior police officers Monirul Islam and Mohammad Harun-Or-Rashid, and several other senior officials were also found to be involved in those incidents.

The report presented evidence against the ousted Bangladesh PM, who fled the country during violent protests by the students in Dhaka.
The report further claimed that many high-ranking officials, including former military and police personnel believed to be involved, fled from the country after the fall of Hasina's Awami League party on August 5.
<h2>'Systematic design'</h2>
The commission told the interim government that the inquiries uncovered a "systematic design" that enabled incidents of enforced disappearances to occur unnoticed.
According to the statement, retired Supreme Court judge Mainul Islam Chowdhury, the chairman of the commission, told Yunus, "Individuals carrying out enforced disappearance or extrajudicial killing (even) lacked knowledge about victims."

It added that the police's elite anti-crime Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), which includes personnel from the army, navy, air force, and regular police, have also collaborated to detain, torture, and hold the victims in secret families. In light of this, the commission advised the abolishment of the RAB and called for either repealing or significantly amending the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2009.
According to the rights activist and commission member Sajjad Hossain, 1,676 complaints of enforced disappearances have been recorded so far, and 758 of them have been examined.
Moreover, out of these, 200 people, or 27 per cent of the victims, never returned.
Earlier at a press conference, the commission announced that they had found eight secret detention centres in the capital Dhaka and its outskirts.
<h2>'Need another year to complete inquiry'</h2>
The panel chairman told Yunus that they would share another interim report in March and would require at least another year to complete the scrutiny of all allegations they had received.
"You are doing a really very important job. We are ready to give you all kinds of support that you need," Yunus said, sharing support with the commission.
The report also called for creating a new law criminalising enforced disappearances.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh on Thursday ordered the authorities to ban the dissemination of all the “hate speeches” of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina in the media and on social networking platforms.

The order follows Hasina's recent speech, her first public address after fleeing Bangladesh four months ago, in which she mounted a stinging attack on the country's interim leader Muhammad Yunus, accusing him of perpetrating "genocide" and failing to protect minorities including Hindus.

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) reported that a two-member tribunal led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder passed the order and directed the authorities to remove all the “hate speeches” of Hasina from social media and take necessary steps to stop their dissemination in future in all types of mass media.

Prosecutor Advocate Abdullah Al Noman told the news agency that the tribunal asked secretaries of the ICT Division, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to execute the order.

The prosecution earlier filed the petition, pleading to remove and restrict all types of hate speech and incitement by the ousted prime minister, which may intimidate the witnesses or victims or hamper the investigation.

Earlier, prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim briefed the media in this regard, saying not only in Bangladesh, making hate speech is a criminal offence in every law and every country around the world.

"Sheikh Hasina has made speeches, where she was heard saying she got the license to kill 227 people as the same number of cases were filed against her. She was even heard giving threats to the victims and witnesses of the cases against her, through these speeches," Tamim said.

In remarks delivered virtually to her supporters at an event in New York, Hasina, presently living in India, also claimed that there were plans to kill her and her sister Sheikh Rehana just like their father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated in 1975.

Describing Yunus as "power-hungry", Hasina alleged that the places of worship in Bangladesh are under attack and the current dispensation has totally failed to deal with the situation.

Hasina was speaking to supporters of her Awami League party at the event organised on Sunday to mark "Bijoy Dibos" or Victory Day that falls on December 16.

Though Hasina made several statements in the last few months, it was her first public address after taking shelter, said an expert closely tracking developments in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh court bans circulation of Sheikh Hasina's ‘hate speeches'

Bangladesh interim government’s head, chief adviser Muhammad Yunus, has held the regime of Sheikh Hasina responsible for the destruction of “everything” in the country.

Yunus also said that general elections will be conducted in the country only after bringing constitutional and judicial reforms.

"The country's governance structure has been completely destroyed during Hasina's 15-year rule, and a huge task has fallen on us to rebuild it by restoring democracy, economic stability, and public trust," said Yunus while speaking with Nikkei Asia, as reported by PTI.
&nbsp;
The 84-year-old Nobel laureate added that comprehensive reforms need to be introduced by Bangladesh in economy, governance, bureaucracy, and judiciary before conducting elections.

Yunus further said that he will appeal to India to extradite Hasina after her trial in the International Crimes Tribunal in Bangladesh comes to an end.

"Once the trial concludes and a verdict is reached, we will formally request India to hand her over," said Yunus.

He added that, as per an international law signed by both countries, "India would be obligated to comply."

The chief adviser further said that the concern raised by the Indian government regarding the safety of Hindus is not fact-based.

On Tuesday (December 3), Bangladesh had summoned the Indian envoy to its Foreign Office after announcing the suspension of consular services at its mission in the Indian city of Agartala, one day after the protesters breached the premises.

The relations between the two nations have been strained since Sheikh Hasina was ousted as the prime minister in August and took shelter in India, after which New Delhi raised concerns regarding the welfare of minorities in its neighbouring country. The issue was further escalated by the arrest of the&nbsp;Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das last week.

In the interview, Yunus said that the interim government of Bangladesh has set up various commissions for reforms in areas like the electoral system, constitution, and judiciary.

He added that full-scale reforms will be implemented by the government by January after it receives recommendations from the commissions.

"Implementing these reforms will take time, as we are essentially building a new Bangladesh from scratch," Yunus said. He further ruled himself out from contesting future elections.

Bangladesh communal tensions: Lawyer defending detained Hindu monk ‘brutally attacked’

Bangladeshi immigration authorities sent back 54 members of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) on Sunday (Dec. 1) from the Benapole border checkpoint despite possessing valid travel documents for their intended journey to India.

The Bangladesh police did not let them proceed further citing "suspicious travel" as the reason, as per local media reports.

Reportedly, Hindu devotees from several parts of the country, on Saturday (Nov. 30), had arrived at the land port, along the international border as they were intending to participate in a religious ceremony in India.

"We consulted the Special Branch of Police and received instructions from the higher authorities not to permit them," Benapole Immigration Checkpost Officer-in-Charge (OC) Imtiaz Ahsanul Quader Bhuiya said as per Bangladesh's Daily Star.

Bhuiya claimed that the Bangladeshi police did not permit 54 ISKCON devotees to cross into India, citing "suspicions regarding their travel purposes".

Several members of the group were also made to wait at the checkpoint since Saturday night before they were turned back on Sunday.

"We were going to participate in a religious ceremony in India, but immigration officials stopped us, citing the absence of government permission," said Saurabh Tapandar Cheli, one of the Iskcon members.

ISKCON says 'stand with Chinmoy Das' after Dhaka chapter distances itself from Hindu monk

Iskcon, or International Society for Krishna Consciousness, is in sharp focus in Bangladesh after the arrest of one of its monks and a petition in the Dhaka High Court on banning it.

The court on Thursday (Nov. 28) rejected the plea to ban, filed by a&nbsp;lawyer who claimed that Iskcon is banned in several countries.

The ban was sought after the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, an Iskcon priest who reportedly led rallies against attacks on Hindus in the country since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina as prime minister. Hasina fled to India in August after being ousted in a student-led popular uprising against her regime.
