Chinmoy Das arrest: Petition filed in Bangladesh High Court seeking ban on ISKCON

The Attorney General of Bangladesh, Md Asaduzzaman, called for the removal of the term "secular" from the nation’s Constitution, saying that "90 per cent of the population was Muslim."

Asaduzzaman also asked for&nbsp;change in the title given to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who is known as the “Father of the Nation.”

During a court session on the 15th Amendment's legality, overseen by Justices Farah Mahbub and Debashish Roy Chowdhury, Asaduzzaman said that constitutional changes should strengthen democracy rather than encourage authoritarianism.

<h2>'I want it the way it was before'</h2>

The Attorney General said that these amendments “would align the Constitution with the country’s democratic and historical ethos.”

He added, “Earlier, there was constant trust and faith in Allah. I want it the way it was before. It is said in Article 2A that the state shall ensure equal rights and equality in the practice of all religions. Article 9 talks about 'Bengali nationalism'. It is contradictory.”

<h2>'Honouring&nbsp;Sheikh Mujib is vital, but...'</h2>

Asaduzzaman also requested the removal of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s official title as "Father of the Nation," arguing that it contributes to national divisions and limits freedom of speech.

He said, “Honouring the contributions of Sheikh Mujib is vital, but enforcing it by law creates division.”

He also criticised Articles 7A and 7B, which prohibit constitutional changes that might "subvert democracy," arguing that these articles limit democratic reforms and concentrate power. "It is done to prolong the dictatorship for ulterior motives. It is antithetical to the rule of law," he said.

Asaduzzaman demanded the revocation of the 15th Amendment, adding that it disrupts Bangladesh’s independence legacy and conflicts with the "spirit of the Liberation War" and the democratic movements of the 1990s.

Earlier this month, hundreds gathered in Dhaka, demanding protection for Hindus and other minorities who have faced violence and threats following Sheikh Hasina’s departure from office in August.

Terming Awami League as "fascist", Bangladesh's interim government on Saturday (Nov 9)&nbsp;said it will not permit the deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina's party to hold Sunday's planned rally.

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus's press secretary Shafiqul Alam in a Facebook post said that the interim government won't tolerate any violence or any attempt to break the law and order situation in the country.

“The Awami League in its current form is a fascist party. There is no way this fascist party will be allowed to hold protests in Bangladesh,” he said.

Alam further cautioned that “anyone who would try to hold rally, gathering and processions by taking orders from the mass murderer and dictator Sheikh Hasina will face full force of the law enforcing agencies”.

Alam's statement followed a call from the Awami League on its verified Facebook page, urging supporters to gather at Shaheed Noor Hossain Chattar, or Zero Point, in Gulistan on Sunday to protest what they described as “misrule.”

"Our protest is against the deprivation of the rights of the people of the country; our protest is against the rise of fundamentalist forces; our protest is against the conspiracy to disrupt the lives of the common people," read the Facebook post.

This was the first call for a rally by the Awami League since August 5, when Hasina fled to India amid a mass student-led uprising against her government.

Awami League also urged party men to stage rallies at grassroots levels across the country on Sunday in line with "the spirit of the call" as described in the Facebook post.

The protest venue, Shaheed Noor Hossain Chattar, holds historical significance, as it was where Awami League youth leader Noor Hossain was killed on November 10, 1987, during a demonstration against the autocratic rule of the then military dictator General HM Ershad.

The interim government earlier banned Awami League's student front Bangladesh Chhatra League over allegations of its “fascist role” during and before the July-August Anti-Discrimination Students Movement.

Initially launched as a campaign for job quota reforms, the student-led movement intensified into a mass protest that ultimately led to the fall of the Hasina government.

While several political factions have called for the Awami League to be banned, Yunus said such a decision is up to political parties. Some ministers of the interim government also oppose the ban, emphasising political inclusivity. Awami League's main rival Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by former prime minister Khaleeda Zia also opposed banning any political party.

Bangladesh's Yunus govt vows to not allow 'fascist' Awami League to hold rally

Bangladesh’s interim government has charged 19&nbsp;Hindus under stringent sedition law over hoisting saffron flag, media reports show. At least two people have been detained in the case, amid large scale protests by Hindus for setting up a law and tribunal for the protection of minorities. Hindus and other minorities have increasingly come under attacks in Bangladesh since the collapse of now-deposed PM Sheikh Hasina. US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump also spoke about the plight of Hindus in Bangladesh on Thursday.

“It would have never happened on my watch. Kamala and Joe have ignored Hindus across the world and in America. They have been a disaster from Israel to Ukraine to our own Southern Border, but we will Make America Strong Again and bring back Peace through Strength,” Trump wrote in a post on X.

<h2>Why Hindus are protesting?</h2>

Hindu organisations in Bangladesh held a massive rally in Chattogram on Oct 25, asking the government to accept their eight-point agenda. One major demand was to establish a tribunal to prosecute those who oppress minorities, bring a law on minority protection, and establish a ministry for minorities.

However, the Bangladesh government, led by Muhammad Yunus, responded by filing a sedition case on Oct 30 at Chattogram's Kotwali Police Station. Under Bangladeshi law, sedition charges can lead to life imprisonment if convicted.

Bangladesh: 19 Hindus booked under sedition laws for hoisting saffron flag, demanding protection

Bangladesh’s interim government led by Muhammad Yunus said on Wednesday (Oct 23) that it has imposed a ban on the student wing of Bangladesh Awami League, the party of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina. The country’s interior ministry issued a gazette notification earlier, saying the Chhatra League will be declared a terror organisation under Clause 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009.

The government said the move has been taken in view of the organisation’s alleged involvement in the killings and destructive and terrorist activities, both directly and through incitement, during the July riots.

Several organisations, seen as opponents of Hasina, had called on the interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, to impose&nbsp;a ban on the student wing. One such organisation was the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, which accused the Chhatra League of committing atrocities during riots that eventually led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina. Anti-Discrimination Student Movement even issued an ultimatum to the government, which was supposed to end on Thursday (Oct 24).

<h2>Allegations against Chhatra League</h2>

The student wing has been accused of committing serious crimes, including murder, rape, attack and extortion, during the rule of Awami League.

There are allegations that they even set up so-called torture-rooms at different halls of public universities. Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, had also been lobbying to ban the Chhatra League for quite some time now.

The erstwhile Awami League government led by Hasina had imposed a ban on Jamaat on August 1, 2024, accusing the Islamist party as a “militant and terrorist” organisation. The government had then blamed Jamaat's student wing for inciting chaos over a quota system for government jobs.

The Jamaat had opposed Bangladesh's 1971 independence from Pakistan and sided with the Pakistani troops during the Liberation War.

The Jamaat, founded in 1941 in undivided India, was first banned in 1972, the year Bangladesh framed its Constitution, which disbanded the functioning of any association, union or political party based on religion.

Bangladesh interim govt declares student wing of Sheikh Hasina’s party as terror outfit

In 2021, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Bangladesh, he offered a silver, gold-plated crown to goddess Kali at the Jeshoreshwari Temple in Satkhira district. The temple is revered as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas spread across India and neighbouring countries. Thus it holds high cultural and religious significance for Hindus around the world.

The crown has reportedly been stolen now.

On Thursday (Oct 10), when the priest left the temple after performing worship, the cleaning staff noticed later the crown was missing from the goddess’s head.

A member from the priest’s family later told local media that the crown was made of silver and coated with gold.

The Indian government has now expressed concerns over the theft and called on Dhaka to open a probe and recover the crown as soon as possible.

<h2>About the Jeshoreshwari Temple</h2>

The Jeshoreshwari Temple is believed to have been built in the 12th century by a Brahmin named Anari.

About the Jeshoreshwari Temple The Jeshoreshwari Temple is believed to have been built in the 12th century by a Brahmin named Anari. Violent clashes erupted between students and members of a Bangladeshi paramilitary auxilliary force near the Secretariat in Dhaka on Sunday night, leaving several injured from both sides.

Violent clashes erupted between students and members of a Bangladeshi paramilitary auxilliary force near the Secretariat in Dhaka on Sunday night, leaving several injured from both sides. At least 50 people were injured in the clashes, The Daily Star reported. Why did the Ansar paramilitary force and students clash? The clashes began after 9:00 pm when students from Dhaka University marched to the Secretariat to confront Ansar members, whom they accused of being “agents of autocracy.” The clash got violent, prompting police to intervene in an attempt to restore order, Bangladeshi media reported. What is Ansar? Ansar is a paramilitary auxiliary force in the country. Their roles include helping government authorities with public security, participating in disaster management, supporting law enforcement, and aiding the armed forces. Earlier on Sunday, students gathered at the Raju Memorial Sculpture and headed towards the Secretariat following reports that Ansar members had detained Nahid Islam, an adviser in the interim government, and other coordinators of the Students Against Discrimination movement. Also read: PM Modi, Joe Biden discuss Ukraine, Bangladesh, and global security over phone The Ansar members had been protesting for two days, seeking the nationalisation of their jobs. 'Difficult to overcome mountain-like challenges overnight': Muhammad Yunus On Sunday, Bangladesh interim government’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus appealed to the people to have “patience” because it is difficult to address the “mountain-like challenges” Bangladesh is facing. In a televised address to the nation, his second since assuming charge on August 8 after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, Yunus said, “I’ll just say, you have to be patient. It is difficult to overcome mountain-like challenges overnight.” He also referred to the growing demands from various sections to punish those responsible for the deaths of many people during the anti-government protests. Bangladesh's interim government will support the country's Rohingya refugee population and vital garment export trade, leader Muhammad Yunus said Sunday in his first major policy address since taking office.

Bangladesh's interim government will support the country's Rohingya refugee population and vital garment export trade, leader Muhammad Yunus said Sunday in his first major policy address since taking office. The South Asian country is home to around one million Rohingya refugees. Most of them fled neighbouring Myanmar in 2017 after a military crackdown, which is now the subject of a genocide investigation by a United Nations court. "Our government will continue to support the million-plus Rohingya people sheltered in Bangladesh," Yunus said. "We need the sustained efforts of the international community for Rohingya humanitarian operations and their eventual repatriation to their homeland, Myanmar, with safety, dignity and full rights." Also read: Kishida's exit stirs political uncertainty, casting shadows on BOJ’s delicate rate hike strategy Bangladesh's 3,500 garment factories account for around 85 per cent of its $55 billion in annual exports. Some suppliers shifted production out of the country during the unrest that toppled Yunus' predecessor, ex-premier Sheikh Hasina. "We won't tolerate any attempt to disrupt the global clothing supply chain, in which we are a key player," he said. Yunus was speaking at an assembly of diplomats and UN agency representatives in the capital Dhaka to set out the priorities of his caretaker administration. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus last Thursday (Aug 8) took oath as the head of Bangladesh's interim government. On Sunday (Aug 11) night, Yunus had a meeting with students who spearheaded protests against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. After the meeting, Yunus addressed reporters and said, "Finally, this moment, the monster is gone" referring to former PM Hasina, who fled from the country after a series of protests by students. "The moment you start taking decisions, some people will like your decisions, some people will not like your decisions," he said. "...that's the way it works," warning the interim government that public support is finite and they will encounter many tough choices in the future. Yunus, praising the students for their efforts said, "There is no doubt... because of the student-led revolution the whole government collapsed." "I said (to the students), 'I respect you... I admire you. What you have done is absolutely unparalleled... and because you ordered me to do this (to take charge of the interim administration) I accept...'," he added. Two student activists, Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud, are members of a 16-person advisory council that took their oaths alongside Yunus. The 84-year-old, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his efforts in microfinance and establishing the Grameen Bank for community development, emphasised that the recent resignations of top public figures, such as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the head of Bangladesh's central bank, were "conduct legally." Also read: Bangladesh: Police return to streets, resume patrolling Dhaka after unrest "They want to have a new court. So they went there and asked the chief justice to resign and put their pressure to make him resign," he said referring to the students. "I'm sure they will find the legal way to justify all of this, because legally... all the steps were followed," he added. After weeks of unrest and violent clashes sparked by protests over a jobs quota, an interim government was established in Bangladesh, leading to the resignation and flight of Hasina, who has served as Prime Minister five times. Sheikh Hasina left her residence in Dhaka just hours before it was overtaken, on a Bangladeshi military aircraft to India. The 76-year-old, viewed as a significant ally of New Delhi, is currently in an undisclosed location, with reports suggesting she may seek political asylum, potentially in the United Kingdom. Nearly 600 people from Bangladesh&nbsp;were stopped from entering India at a&nbsp;border point in the Indian state of&nbsp;West Bengal by the Border Security Force (BSF), which has been on high alert since&nbsp;Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted and fled the country on Monday.

On Wednesday (Aug 7), a&nbsp;day before an interim government was&nbsp;set to take control in Bangladesh, hundreds from the country tried to enter India, pleading with BSF officers for entry, claiming they feared for their lives.

As per a report by India Today, roughly 1,000 Bangladeshi Hindus have gathered at the India-Bangladesh border in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, due to the unstable conditions in Bangladesh. The BSF, however, has prevented them from crossing into India.

Officials reported that the group attempted to cross into India at Dakshin Berubari village in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district.

"They appealed to us and asked to be let into the country, saying that they were afraid of being attacked and also feared for their lives. It was explained to them that it is not possible to let them enter in this fashion," said an official.

While some people in the group left, many remained at the border late Wednesday evening, hoping to be allowed entry. A local resident told news agency PTI that the people gathered across the barbed wire were pleading to be let in.

"But we are helpless. They recounted their horrific experiences," the resident said.

Tensions had been rising in Bangladesh since before the January 7 elections, which were overwhelmingly won by Hasina's Awami League but were widely criticised as not being free and fair.

Student protests began in June after a Bangladeshi high court reinstated a 30 per cent reservation in government jobs for family members of freedom fighters and veterans from Bangladesh's 1971 War of Independence. Although the quota was later reduced by the country's supreme court, the ousted PM's&nbsp;handling of the situation angered students.

Protests continued with students demanding that&nbsp;Hasina step down. Clashes between protesters and the police resulted in over 100 deaths and numerous injuries across the country.

Bangladesh on high alert: 134 police and journalists injured in escalating protests

Bangladesh's top court has suspended quotas for government jobs after thousands of students staged nationwide protests. These protests are against what they term a discriminatory system favouring those in power.

Bangladesh temporarily suspends job quotas after protests, students demand merit-based system

Bangladesh’s top court on Wednesday temporarily suspended quotas for coveted government jobs after thousands of students staged nationwide protests against what they call a discriminatory system, lawyers said.

The quota system reserves more than half of well-paid and massively oversubscribed civil service posts, totalling hundreds of thousands of government jobs, for specific groups, including children of liberation heroes.

Students launched protests earlier this month, demanding a merit-based system, with demonstrations on Wednesday blocking highways and railway lines.

“We will not return to classrooms until our demand is met,” said protest leader Rasel Ahmed of Chittagong University.

The quota system was abolished in 2018 after weeks of protests, but reinstated in June by Dhaka’s High Court, sparking fury from students.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday suspended that order for a month, said lawyer Shah Monjurul Hoque, who represents two students seeking to end the quota system.

Hoque said Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan had also requested that students return to classes.

Despite the call, student groups continued to block key highways and railway tracks, bringing traffic movement in much of the capital, Dhaka and several major cities to a halt.

“This (court) order is temporary. We want a permanent executive order from the government, saying that the quotas are abolished, except some quotas for the disabled and minorities,” said Parvez Mosharraf, a student at Dhaka University.

He was among dozens of students who laid timber logs on a railway track at Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar, forcing the halt of train services connecting the capital to northern Bangladesh.

The quota system reserves 30 per cent of government posts for children of those who fought to win Bangladeshi independence in 1971, 10 per cent for women, and 10 per cent for residents of specific districts.

Students said only those quotas supporting ethnic minorities and disabled people — six per cent of jobs — should remain.

“We don’t also want the job quotas for women because women are no longer lagging behind,” female student Meena Rani Das, 22, said.

Bangladesh students triumph as top court puts brakes on controversial job quota system

The death toll from floods in Bangladesh this week has risen to eight, leaving more than two million affected after heavy rains caused major rivers to burst their banks, officials confirmed Saturday.

The South Asian nation of 170 million people, crisscrossed by hundreds of rivers, has seen more frequent floods in recent decades.&nbsp;

Climate change has made rainfall more erratic and melting glaciers upstream in the Himalayan mountains.

Two teenage boys were killed when a boat capsized in flood waters in Shahjadur, the northern rural town's police chief Sabuj Rana told AFP.

According to recent studies, dangerous levels of harmful "forever chemicals" are found in rivers, lakes, and tap water in Bangladeshi regions that are home to garment manufacturers.

According to recent studies, dangerous levels of harmful "forever chemicals" are found in rivers, lakes, and tap water in Bangladeshi regions that are home to garment manufacturers. Some of these chemicals have been linked to major health problems. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), sometimes referred to as everlasting chemicals, were discovered in 27 water samples taken near textile industries in the capital city of Dhaka. Bangladesh is a global centre for fashion, providing brands to international markets. The research by the Environment and Social Development Organization (Esdo) and Ipen, a network of NGOs, states that PFAS levels were found to be much higher in many of the samples obtained in 2019 and 2022 than in the EU and the US legal limits, and some of the samples included one or more internationally prohibited substances. A group of around 10,000 chemicals known as PFAS have been connected to several severe diseases, including several types of cancer. Since the 1950s, they have been added to and utilised in the production of common consumer goods. They are referred to as "forever chemicals" because, according to experts, it may take hundreds or even thousands of years for them to break down once the items in which they were employed are discarded. PFAS have the potential to linger in water for generations if they seep into it. 50% of PFAS used worldwide is accounted for by the textile sector. Also read: Kilauea volcano could erupt like a 'stomp-rocket toy', says study Bangladesh is a signatory to the Stockholm Convention, which has banned certain PFAS worldwide and is now reviewing others. The international agreement seeks to shield the environment and public health from the harm that persistent organic pollutants may cause. Sixty-seven per cent of the 27 samples containing PFAS included one or more PFAS compounds that are banned worldwide. High-level samples were frequently found close to textile facilities, indicating that the sector may be a major contributor to water pollution. The Karnatali River water sample had the highest PFAS concentrations, more than 300 times the recommended EU limit. Since Bangladesh lacks PFAS laws, the study's results were compared to those of the EU, the Netherlands, and the US. “Bangladesh is a small country with a large population. The water bodies are major sources of irrigation, agriculture, industrial development and drinking water. We found that water is contaminated with highly toxic chemicals, and consider this a big problem that needs to be addressed. If Bangladesh is a signatory of the Stockholm Convention, it has an obligation to regulate PFAS,” Shahriar Hossain, a lead author of the study, said. (With inputs from agencies)

<h2>‘Driver was not attentive’&nbsp;</h2>

Local media quoted some passengers of the bus as saying that the bus driver was not attentive while he drove. “I was sitting just beside the driver’s seat. The driver apparently was not careful or attentive while driving the bus,” said Russell Mollah, a 35-year-old passenger. He alleged that the driver was constantly talking to his assistant and that he asked him to get more passengers on board.

Mollah reportedly lost his father in the accident, while his elder brother was still missing.

The power plant is located in Banshkhali Upazila of Chittagong district. The incident took place on Saturday morning when workers initiated a protest for their demands of&nbsp;salary and allowances ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, police said.

Banshkhali Police Station Inspector Azizul Islam said that power plant authorities had a dispute with the workers over salary and allowances.&nbsp;

On Saturday morning, when the police moved-in to control protesting workers, they were attacked. Four workers died in the ensuing clash&nbsp;while a fifth passed away at Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Faisal Karim, a doctor at the hospital confirmed this.

As per eyewitnesses, the police opened fire at one stage during the clash.

The 1,320 MW coal-fired thermal power plant is being constructed in&nbsp;a joint venture by&nbsp;S Alam Group and China's Sefco Company. The project is being set up on 600 acres of land.

Earlier, there were disputes over acquisition of&nbsp;land&nbsp;as well. Dissatisfied locals had alleged that S Alam group was acquiring land forcibly without any&nbsp;rehabilitation. There were also complaints of salt and shrimp farmers going out of business if the plant was built.
