The Odyssey to Avengers: Doomsday- 9 most-awaited Hollywood releases of 2026

A teaser clip from Avengers: Doomsday has been leaked online and shows the return of a huge character that had effectively left the franchise. The film's release is still a year away, but promotions will start soon. One trailer has now reached the internet, not officially. Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr plays the villain in this film, something that was revealed long ago. However, the leaked trailer shows a popular character's return. Notably, the film's official trailers are set to be shown before Avatar: Fire and Ash in theatres. Several X posts where people claimed to have posted the leaked teaser showed the clips had been removed due to copyright infringement. While the clip that was available till some time back seems real, it wouldn't be a surprise if it turns out to be an AI-generated video. (Spoilers ahead).

Avengers: Doomsday - Spoilers Ahead

If you want to wait for the real thing to hit the screens to know who this character is, then turn back here. According to the clip doing the rounds online, Captain America, aka Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, is also in Avengers: Doomsday. The clip shows the character riding a motorcycle and entering their home. The person picks up their old superhero costume, and we soon see that it is none other than former Captain America Steve Rogers. A caption reads, "Steve Rogers will return in Avengers: Doomsday."

If the leaked clip is indeed real, then this marks the return of one of the most popular characters of the Avengers franchise. Rogers' storyline ended with Avengers: Endgame in 2019, and Anthony Mackie, who played Sam Wilson, became the new Captain America and was seen in the film Brave New World. Evans has repeatedly denied that he is part of Avengers: Doomsday. He previously told ScreenRant that he is “sad to be away” from his former co-stars. However, it seems that Evans isn't returning as Captain America as the clip shows him holding a baby, and showing hesitance to join the crew. This means that Mackie will be shown as Captain America.

Reports suggest that there will be three Avengers: Doomsday teasers, and then a full trailer showing the mammoth star cast. It includes new characters from the recent Fantastic 4 film, and Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn and James Marsden from the X-Men series. The Russo brothers, directors of the film, say that the new film is “bigger than anything we have ever done”. Avengers: Doomsday is slated to hit theatres on 18 December 2026.

The person picks up their old superhero costume, and we soon see that it is none other than former Captain America Steve Rogers. A caption reads, "Steve Rogers will return in Avengers: Doomsday." If the leaked clip is indeed real, then this marks the return of one of the most popular characters of the Avengers franchise.

Why X-Men (2000) is the key to Doomsday

The original X-Men (2000) is the only film that truly matters for Marvel’s upcoming multiverse showdown. Directed by Bryan Singer, it introduced audiences to Professor Xavier’s gifted mutants and their clash with Magneto’s Brotherhood. The movie established nearly all of the characters returning in Doomsday, including Xavier, Magneto, Mystique, and Cyclops, making it the foundation for the version of the team you’ll see in the MCU.

Also Read: Devil Wears Prada moment: Meryl Streep meets Anna Wintour at Milan Fashion Week

Later films like X2: X-Men United, The Last Stand, Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix won’t influence Marvel’s storyline. Thanks to the timeline reset in X-Men: Days of Future Past, much of the original continuity was effectively erased, leaving the 2000 movie as the only essential entry to revisit.

How Days of Future Past changed everything

In Days of Future Past, Wolverine travels back in time to prevent a dystopian future ruled by Sentinels. When he returns, he discovers a rewritten timeline where characters like Jean Grey and Cyclops—once dead, are alive again. This shift nullified the events of The Last Stand and even undermined X2, whose plot hinged on Jean’s sacrifice.

Also Read: Who is Benny Blanco? While spinoffs such as Deadpool and Logan technically remain canon, they won’t play a significant role in Doomsday.

A farewell tribute to the mutants

Focusing solely on the original X-Men also carries emotional weight. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige began his career as an associate producer on the 2000 film. Reports suggest Avengers: Doomsday will serve as a heartfelt sendoff to these beloved characters before the MCU reboots the mutants for the next saga.

Also Read: Why are Tom Holland & Zendaya forced to increase security at their London home?

Who else might show up?

Beyond the confirmed lineup, speculation is running wild. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool are both rumored to appear, especially after the success of Deadpool & Wolverine. Actor Evan Peters has also expressed interest in reprising Quicksilver, while longtime stars Halle Berry (Storm) and Famke Janssen (Jean Grey) are expected to return as part of the farewell.

When and where to watch

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026. Until then, fans can revisit Fox’s original X-Men streaming now on Disney+ to prepare for the mutants’ epic MCU comeback.
