Why X-Men (2000) is the key to Doomsday

The original X-Men (2000) is the only film that truly matters for Marvel’s upcoming multiverse showdown. Directed by Bryan Singer, it introduced audiences to Professor Xavier’s gifted mutants and their clash with Magneto’s Brotherhood. The movie established nearly all of the characters returning in Doomsday, including Xavier, Magneto, Mystique, and Cyclops, making it the foundation for the version of the team you’ll see in the MCU.

Also Read: Devil Wears Prada moment: Meryl Streep meets Anna Wintour at Milan Fashion Week

Later films like X2: X-Men United, The Last Stand, Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix won’t influence Marvel’s storyline. Thanks to the timeline reset in X-Men: Days of Future Past, much of the original continuity was effectively erased, leaving the 2000 movie as the only essential entry to revisit.

How Days of Future Past changed everything

In Days of Future Past, Wolverine travels back in time to prevent a dystopian future ruled by Sentinels. When he returns, he discovers a rewritten timeline where characters like Jean Grey and Cyclops—once dead, are alive again. This shift nullified the events of The Last Stand and even undermined X2, whose plot hinged on Jean’s sacrifice.

Also Read: Who is Benny Blanco? While spinoffs such as Deadpool and Logan technically remain canon, they won’t play a significant role in Doomsday.

A farewell tribute to the mutants

Focusing solely on the original X-Men also carries emotional weight. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige began his career as an associate producer on the 2000 film. Reports suggest Avengers: Doomsday will serve as a heartfelt sendoff to these beloved characters before the MCU reboots the mutants for the next saga.

Also Read: Why are Tom Holland & Zendaya forced to increase security at their London home?

Who else might show up?

Beyond the confirmed lineup, speculation is running wild. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool are both rumored to appear, especially after the success of Deadpool & Wolverine. Actor Evan Peters has also expressed interest in reprising Quicksilver, while longtime stars Halle Berry (Storm) and Famke Janssen (Jean Grey) are expected to return as part of the farewell.

When and where to watch

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026. Until then, fans can revisit Fox’s original X-Men streaming now on Disney+ to prepare for the mutants’ epic MCU comeback.

Waiting for Avengers: Doomsday to release in theaters? Do not forget to revisit X-Men (2000) before watching the first part of the Multiverse Saga’s finale as it features the return of Fox’s X-Men.

With Avengers: Doomsday set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, Marvel fans are gearing up for one of the most ambitious crossovers in cinematic history. Positioned as the first part of the Multiverse Saga’s finale, the film will unite the New Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and, most excitingly, the long-awaited return of Fox’s X-Men. Patrick Stewart’s Professor Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen’s Magneto, Mystique, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and Beast are all confirmed to appear, making Doomsday the biggest ensemble since Deadpool & Wolverine. But with two decades of mutant movies behind us, fans may wonder: which X-Men film should they revisit to prepare? The answer is surprisingly simple- just one.
Marvel, the juggernaut of superhero cinema, is in a bit of a pickle lately, as reported in a comprehensive Variety feature. They have gone from being the cocky cool kid on the block to wrestling with some serious issues. It's like watching Tony Stark fumble with his Iron Man suit — not something we're used to seeing in the superhero universe. So, what exactly is going on with Marvel's strategy for their movies? Let's break it all down.

The Kang conundrum

It all started with Jonathan Majors, the promising actor poised to take the MCU by storm as Kang the Conqueror. However, fate had other plans. Majors found himself entangled in a messy legal scandal involving domestic violence charges, and Marvel was left in a dilemma. Do they stick with Kang, or do they pivot to another villain like Dr Doom? It's a classic "choose your path" scenario, but one with significant implications for the future of the MCU.

Majors had already made a mark in the MCU as a scene-stealing antagonist in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. He was set to become the franchise's next big thing in Loki, with the finale setting up Kang as the titular star of a fifth Avengers film in 2026. Now, all of this hangs in the balance, thanks to his legal woes.

The Marvel decision-makers gathered at their annual retreat in Palm Springs with a collective sense of anxiety. The high-flying confidence that once defined these gatherings had given way to a cloud of uncertainty. They were forced to discuss backup plans, such as pivoting to a different comic book adversary like Dr Doom. Yet, this decision carries its own set of complications, as Majors had already left his mark on the MCU, for better or worse.

Overdose of superheroes

The MCU has been on a relentless mission to provide a never-ending stream of interconnected content for both theatres and Disney+. The goal was to never have a lapse in superhero storytelling, but this strategy appears to have backfired. The sheer volume of content produced taxed the Marvel apparatus to its limits, leading to viewer confusion and dissatisfaction.

"The Marvel machine was pumping out a lot of content. Did it get to the point where there was just too much, and they were burning people out on superheroes? It's possible," noted Wall Street analyst Eric Handler. This oversaturation risked compromising the quality that fans had come to expect from Marvel.

The Marvels misfire?

The Marvels was supposed to be a triumphant sequel to Captain Marvel, but it turned into a story of delays and reshoots. The film, with a budget of $250 million, was intended to be a box office behemoth. Instead, it's tracking for an opening well below the $185 million Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness achieved in its debut weekend.

Directed by Nia DaCosta, the film reunites Brie Larson's Captain Marvel with two superpowered allies. However, instead of building on the success of the original film, it stumbled into four weeks of reshoots to bring coherence to a tangled storyline. The director's departure for another project during post-production added further fuel to the fire.

VFX fiasco

Marvel's visual effects team, once renowned for its excellence, is now struggling to keep pace with the endless stream of productions. The situation reached a tipping point when the world premiere of Quantumania featured shoddy CGI that left attendees baffled.

In February, when the film was shown, there were at least 10 scenes with last-minute, out-of-focus visual effects, according to a veteran power broker who witnessed the disaster. The rushed post-production schedule left little room for the VFX team to deliver their best work.

The situation led to a unanimous vote among Marvel VFX workers to unionise in September, sparking an industrywide trend. Their concerns included long hours and inadequate pay. Anna George, a former Marvel Studios VFX assistant coordinator, testified before the Congressional Labor Caucus about the studio's untenable deadlines and working conditions.

The difficulties extended to the very top of the VFX hierarchy, leading to the firing of Victoria Alonso, who oversaw the studio's physical production, post-production, VFX, and animation. Disney's top brass was reportedly infuriated by the declining quality control on Marvel productions, particularly on the expanding TV front.

Quality vs Quantity

Marvel's strategy of pushing out an abundance of content may have been its undoing. Fans, who once associated the Marvel brand with quality, are now questioning this association. As Joanna Robinson, a writer and podcaster, noted, "The quality is suffering," and many projects have felt "half-baked and undercooked." This deviation from their traditional model has raised concerns about the studio's ability to maintain the same level of excellence.

Blade's bumpy ride

Marvel's planned reboot of Blade with Mahershala Ali took an unexpected turn. Multiple script changes, director swaps, and a shutdown six weeks before production left the project in disarray. At one point, the story morphed into a narrative led by women, sidelining Blade as a supporting character in his own movie. Such a deviation from the established formula was perplexing, especially considering that Mahershala Ali, a two-time Oscar winner, was cast in the titular role.

The script for Blade underwent so many transformations that the studio was forced to bring in Michael Green, the Oscar-nominated writer of Logan, to start from scratch. The project's release date was pushed back to 2025, with speculation that the film's budget would be significantly reduced, marking a departure from Marvel's traditionally high-spending approach.

The Old Guard returns

In a move born out of desperation, Marvel is exploring the possibility of resurrecting beloved characters like Iron Man and Black Widow, who were seemingly killed off in Avengers: Endgame. While this could be an exciting prospect for fans, it comes with a hefty price tag, as Robert Downey Jr's upfront salary for Iron Man 3 was approximately $25 million. Reviving these iconic characters could be a costly gamble, even for Marvel.

The Fox factor

One potential lifeline for Marvel lies in the treasure trove of superhero properties acquired through Disney's purchase of 21st Century Fox in 2019. The deal brought characters like the X-Men and the Fantastic Four back into Marvel's fold, generating considerable excitement among fans. Deadpool 3 and a Fantastic Four reboot are on the horizon, offering fresh opportunities for storytelling and character crossovers.

Additionally, the acquisition of the X-Men franchise provides Marvel with a chance to reimagine these beloved characters within the MCU. The recent resolution of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike has allowed Marvel to initiate discussions with writers about integrating the X-Men into their cinematic universe.

Kevin Feige's reckoning

Amid these challenges, Kevin Feige, the mastermind behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is taking a step back to reassess their strategy. Recognising that some scripts and projects have veered off course, he's making difficult decisions to realign the studio's creative direction.

What the future holds

Marvel's recent setbacks might feel like a stark departure from their prior track record of success, but they are far from down for the count. As long as they can strike a balance between quantity and quality, harness the potential of their newly acquired Fox assets, and make strategic choices, there's hope yet for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Quality vs Quantity Marvel's strategy of pushing out an abundance of content may have been its undoing. Blade's bumpy ride Marvel's planned reboot of Blade with Mahershala Ali took an unexpected turn. While this could be an exciting prospect for fans, it comes with a hefty price tag, as Robert Downey Jr's upfront salary for Iron Man 3 was approximately $25 million. Reviving these iconic characters could be a costly gamble, even for Marvel. The Fox factor One potential lifeline for Marvel lies in the treasure trove of superhero properties acquired through Disney's purchase of 21st Century Fox in 2019. Recognising that some scripts and projects have veered off course, he's making difficult decisions to realign the studio's creative direction. What the future holds Marvel's recent setbacks might feel like a stark departure from their prior track record of success, but they are far from down for the count. As long as they can strike a balance between quantity and quality, harness the potential of their newly acquired Fox assets, and make strategic choices, there's hope yet for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

At a recent event, director of Marvel Studios' blockbuster Avengers: Endgame Joe Russo shared his thoughts on the impact of generative AI on Hollywood. Artificial intelligence is constantly changing our world today. AI has entered many industries, including food, hospitality, automobiles, music, and fashion. But now that day is not far off when AI will be seen making movies.

I have some super-exciting news for you. Warner Bros Discovery and Disney have just announced that the Avengers and the Justice League will be teaming up to face the ultimate supervillain duo of Darkseid and Thanos in an upcoming crossover movie. Yes, you read that right. The two biggest superhero teams are finally going to be sharing the same screen, and it's all thanks to James Gunn, who has recently taken over as the head of DC Studios. Gunn has already shown that he has a deep love for both Marvel and DC, and thus is also directing the big crossover movie. The movie does not have a title yet.

According to sources, Darkseid and Thanos will be acquiring the Anti-Life equation and the Infinity Stones respectively, giving them unparalleled power and making them the most formidable supervillain team to date. The movie promises to be a non-stop, action-packed extravaganza, with all the actors from the Avengers and Justice League movies returning to reprise their roles.

But wait, there's more. This crossover movie is just the beginning of a brand-new era in the superhero movie world. According to sources close to the production, DC and Marvel are planning a combined cinematic universe that will feature all their beloved characters in one shared universe, called DCMCU (DC and Marvel Cinematic Universe).

Imagine the possibilities. I could see Deadpool teaming up with Harley Quinn, or Black Panther and Aquaman working together to save the ocean. The potential for crossover storylines is endless, and I can't wait to see what the future holds.

Of course, I have to admit, the idea of a shared universe between Marvel and DC does seem a little far-fetched. After all, these two companies have been bitter rivals for years, each vying for the top spot in the superhero movie world. But if anyone can make it happen, it's James Gunn, who has already proven his talent with the Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad movies, as well as the Peacemaker TV show.

So, superhero fans, mark your calendars and get ready for the ultimate cinematic event of the year. The Avengers and Justice League are coming together to save the universe, and we're all in for a wild ride. And who knows, maybe someday we'll see Spider-Man and Batman solving crimes together in Gotham City. The possibilities are endless in the DCMCU!

Disclaimer: I must confess that this was all just a prank, an April Fool's joke. There are no current plans for a crossover movie or a shared cinematic universe between Marvel and DC (that we know of, anyway). While it may have been a joke, I can't help but imagine how amazing it would be to see our favorite Marvel and DC superheroes teaming up on the big screen. The thought of seeing Batman and Iron Man working together, or Superman and Captain America fighting side by side, is enough to get any superhero fan excited.

Along with 'Avengers' star Mark Ruffalo, over 600 artists from across the world have signed a petition urging the Islamic Republic of Iran to release prominent actress Taraneh Alidoosti. She was detained in Tehran on the 17th of December on charges of "spreading falsehoods" about the ongoing protests in her country, which were triggered by the tragic death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of so-called "morality police".

Asking for support from his fans and followers, Ruffalo took to his Instagram account and shared information about the petition. He wrote, "Over 600 artists worldwide have signed an open letter calling for the release of award-winning actor and writer Taraneh Alidoosti. We demand her freedom. Join us.
Some famous names who have come out to support the cause include Jason Momoa, Amma Thompson, Penelope Cruz, Kate Winslet, John Oliver and Kristen Stewart among others.

Join us. Petition link below." Some famous names who have come out to support the cause include Jason Momoa, Amma Thompson, Penelope Cruz, Kate Winslet, John Oliver and Kristen Stewart among others.
We finally have a faint idea as to what the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe looks like, at least a little bit. Not only did the panel introduce the next phase in the cinematic universe, Phase 5, but also talked quite a bit about Phase 5. We now know how the already released MCU movies are shaping up the immediate future of MCU. Apart from several announcements regarding standalone movies or sequels like 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever', 'Captain America: New World Order, Marvel Studios has announced the title of the next two movies in the 'Avengers' series. While the fourth 'Avengers' movie is called 'Avengers: The Kang Dynasty', the fifth 'Avengers' movie is called 'Avengers: Secret Wars'.

Marvel Studios will be expecting to recreate the success of 'Infinity War' and 'Endgame'. Made on a staggering combined budget of $500 million, the movie also delivered in spades. Both the critical reception and commercial performance of the films were probably more than even Kevin Feige had hoped. The films, which ended the threat of Thanos, together grossed a mind-numbing $4.83 billion.

Interestingly, the two movies will release only half a year apart from each other: 'The Kang Dynasty' on May 2, 2025 and 'Secret Wars' on 'November 7th, 2025'. While we do not know anything about the films' plot and how the intervening MCU films lead to the big two-part finale (much like 'Avengers: Infinity War' and 'Avengers: Endgame'), the titles themselves go a long way in hinting fans about the story.

What does MCU Phase 6 entail?

So everything that happened after 'Avengers: Endgame', which ended what was called the Infinity Saga, comes under the Multiverse Saga. We have already seen the concept of the multiverse playing out in shows like 'Loki' and movies like 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness'. So the next big overarching saga in MCU will be based on the multiverse. It implies that there can be potentially infinite versions of the character we know as per the term our universe is not the only universe but just one of infinite universes. Also, thanks to the multiverse, hitherto unseen Marvel characters like X-Men and Fantastic Four can enter MCU. Earlier, these characters were owned by Fox, but that was before Disney acquired most of the Fox properties.

MCU can say, the mutants and the FF arrived from parallel universes! Simple.

Now, let's theorise about what those titles of the fourth and fifth 'Avengers' movies may mean.

'Avengers: The Kang Dynasty'

There is an entire storyline called Kang Dynasty in Marvel Comics. And we know Kang the Conqueror is arriving in MCU with the third 'Ant-Man' movie, 'Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania'. We already saw Jonathan Majors playing a gentler variant of him called He Who Remains in the finale of 'Loki' season 1. Found inside Citadel at the End of Time, He wanted Loki and Sylvie about his less-than-kind variants who can potentially wreak havoc on the multiverse. And Kang is certainly one of them.

Unlike Thanos, Kang is a full-on conqueror and at least in comics, does not have any noble reasons for his conquests. But his conquests are not of land but temporal. He is a time-travelling being who belongs to 31st century. He was a descendant of his namesake Nathaniel Richards, the father of Reed Richards or Mr Fantastic (played by John Krasinski in 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness'). He found out about the time travel technology invented by Doctor Doom and sought to use it, thus becoming a conqueror of temporal domains.

In Kang Dynasty, Kang attacks the earth along with his son Marcus or Scarlet Centurion (a mantle earlier held by Kang). The giant storyline is certainly worth an 'Avengers' movie, but it is 'Secret Wars' (fifth 'Avengers') that is the real deal that dwarfs it, and will likely lead directly from 'The Kang Dynasty'.

'Avengers: Secret Wars'

Russo Brothers have expressed interest in directing a 'Secret Wars' movie. And it would certainly be ambitious. As Joe Russo said, it will be bigger than 'Infinity War' and 'Endgame', which speaks volumes about the difficulties in production that Marvel Studios is going to face. Arranging actors' schedules and letting them film around other projects was a nightmare for the studio.

The Russos told Deadline, "Our love for Marvel is based on the books that we read as kids and the books that we fell in love with. The one series that we adored growing up was Secret Wars. It's incredibly ambitious, it would be bigger than Infinity War and Endgame, but it's a massive undertaking. And, you know, those two movies were very hard to make. So, trying to imagine making another two movies even bigger than those two—we're going to have to sleep on it."

Will the Russos really direct 'Secret Wars'?

However, Feige said in a media interaction that Russos will not direct 'Secret Wars'. While talking to Deadline, he said, “They’re not connected to it. They’ve been very direct about that. We love them, they love us. We want to do something together, it’s not this.”

So, there have been two big crossovers events in Marvel Comics called 'Secret Wars', one in 1984 and the second in 2015. The original was the first ever crossover in Marvel Comics that brought together all the properties in one giant storyline. A mechanical ring mysteriously appeared in New York's Central Park and the superheroes found themselves lured to it. But when they came near, they are transported to a realm called Battleworld. It was later revealed that Beyonder, an insanely powerful cosmic entity, has spirited away a group of superheroes and supervillains in a battle between good and evil. Beyonder, you see, is just curious who would ultimately win.

In the 2015 version, the main Marvel Universe was destroyed and other alternate universes' earth began to combine to form Battleworld. As one can tell, adapting 'Secret Wars' will be a tall order indeed, one that surpasses anything seen in the MCU until now.

Also Read: Marvel Phase 6! Two new 'Avengers' films announced, read details inside Interestingly, the two movies will release only half a year apart from each other: 'The Kang Dynasty' on May 2, 2025 and 'Secret Wars' on 'November 7th, 2025'. Welcome to the Multiverse Saga. The filmmakers and talent of Marvel Studios were out in full force in Hall H this weekend, surprising fans with special looks, trailers, and some major announcements for the future of the MCU. #SDCC2022 (1/3) pic.twitter.com/GzKaf4LHmB — Marvel Studios (@MarvelStudios) July 24, 2022 × MCU can say, the mutants and the FF arrived from parallel universes! Simple. Now, let's theorise about what those titles of the fourth and fifth 'Avengers' movies may mean. 'Avengers: The Kang Dynasty' There is an entire storyline called Kang Dynasty in Marvel Comics. Just announced in Hall H: Marvel Studios' Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, in theaters May 2, 2025. #SDCC2022 pic.twitter.com/kCxeyYwgN5 — Marvel Studios (@MarvelStudios) July 24, 2022 × Unlike Thanos, Kang is a full-on conqueror and at least in comics, does not have any noble reasons for his conquests. 'Avengers: Secret Wars' Russo Brothers have expressed interest in directing a 'Secret Wars' movie. Just announced in Hall H: Marvel Studios' Avengers: Secret Wars, in theaters November 7, 2025. #SDCC2022 pic.twitter.com/FXQ5ZbzQYl — Marvel Studios (@MarvelStudios) July 24, 2022 × The Russos told Deadline, "Our love for Marvel is based on the books that we read as kids and the books that we fell in love with. The one series that we adored growing up was Secret Wars. It's incredibly ambitious, it would be bigger than Infinity War and Endgame, but it's a massive undertaking. And, you know, those two movies were very hard to make. So, trying to imagine making another two movies even bigger than those two—we're going to have to sleep on it." Also Read: Russo Brothers want to direct 'Secret Wars' for MCU: It would be bigger than 'Infinity War' and 'Endgame' Will the Russos really direct 'Secret Wars'? However, Feige said in a media interaction that Russos will not direct 'Secret Wars'. While talking to Deadline, he said, “They’re not connected to it. They’ve been very direct about that. We love them, they love us. We want to do something together, it’s not this.” Also Read: After 'Thor Love and Thunder, 'Deadpool 3', 'Shang-Chi 2', 'Thunderbolts' and all other 11 upcoming MCU movies So, there have been two big crossovers events in Marvel Comics called 'Secret Wars', one in 1984 and the second in 2015.

Marvel Phase 6! Two new 'Avengers' films announced, read details inside

Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU, is a vast world far beyond our imagination. Things started rolling in the MCU in 2008 with 'Iron Man'. 26 movies down, MCU is still going strong. Let's take a look at the whole Marvel saga

Marvel Cinematic Universe: What is phase 4? The entire timeline explained

Clint Barton aka Hawkeye has been perhaps the most underrated Avenger in Marvel Cinematic Universe. In phase 4, Marvel has provided stand-alone shows and a film on the remaining Avengers. Its new series 'Hawkeye' not only puts focus on Clint Barton( Jeremy Renner) but also introduces a possible contender in young archer Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld).

The writer of this article got an early preview of the first two episodes of the series and from the looks of it, the show seems a fitting story on Hawkeye.

The series opens in flashback, where a young Kate Bishop witnesses Hawkeye fighting aliens in a ravaged New York City and unknowingly saving her life. She loses her father and home in the attack but vows to take up archery in order to protect her mother (Vera Farmigo) and herself.

Interview: Jeremy Renner calls Hawkeye ‘grandpa’, says his biggest superpower isn’t archery

Years later, Kate is now a loner, living away from her mother who announces her engagement to Jack Duquesne (Tony Dalton) whom Kate finds too suspicious.

Circumstances lead her to Ronin's costume, which she wears- and lands in deep trouble as she gets embroiled in a fight with a gang of goons. The fight is flashed on TV which Clint Barton watches. Barton is in New York City on a holiday with his children for Christmas and a chance encounter with Kate leads him to realise that young kid is in danger.

Being the protector that he is, Barton has first taken care of his family's safety and then of Kate's safety even when she is fangirling over her encounter with her favourite superhero.

Directed by Rhys Thomas, 'Hawkeye' - in its initial episodes- is an unusual Marvel series. It's set in the holiday season, which is a first for Marvel and it deep dives into a character who is first a family man and then a superhero. Hawkeye wears his superpower lightly on his sleeve and dives straight into the action without any theatrics. Set in post 'Endgame' world, Barton now suffers from a hearing problem and is still mourning the loss of some of his beloved friends.

The series also promises a possible new Avenger - Kate Bishop. Actress Hailee Steinfeld plays Kate Bishop with utmost conviction and adds her unique touch to an otherwise crowded Marvel superhero universe. It's a delight to watch Steinfeld and straight face Renner get into banter about 'brand building' for Hawkeye and take on the goons together.

The show's second episode just gives a glimpse of the excitement that's in store for the audience in the coming weeks. And something tells us, that 'Hawkeye' the series will be a fitting tribute to the most underrated Avenger of all time.

'Hawkeye' is a six part series premiering on November 24 on Disney+Hotstar.
