<p>Speaking at the post-match ceremony, Latham said the game had a lots of 'ebbs and flows' and that his side came back into the contest after losing the initiative early.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It was a fantastic game with lots of ebbs and flows. Obviously, it hurts after coming this close. They put us on the back foot with that opening partnership," said Latham.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We pulled things back with a couple of key wickets but they struck some key partnerships at the back end."</p>

<p>Latham, who is currently filling in for an injured Kane Williamson as the captain said the Kiwis needed to "play a perfect game", in order to stand a chance to chase the big total.&nbsp;</p>

For the Oz, returning Travis Head scored his maiden hundred, while Rachin Ravindra and Jimmy Neesham almost pulled off the highest-successful run-chase for New Zealand in tournament history.</p>

<p>New Zealand sent Australia out to bat first after winning the toss and paid the price for it instantly. With the Oz bringing in their x-factor Travis Head for this marquee World Cup clash, he turned this Australia Team into a hulk, slamming the star-studded Kiwi bowlers from the word go. Such was the impact of his inclusion that he and Warner brought up the team’s fifty inside the first five overs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Both openers completed their fifties, with Travis registering his fastest ODI half-century upon his return from the hand injury. Warner and Head recorded the highest total in the first ten overs in this edition of the CWC, adding 118 for no loss.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Glenn Philips provided the breakthrough by dismissing Warner on 81 and accounted for centurion Travis Head on 109 off 67 balls, including ten fours and seven massive sixes.</p>

<p>From Mitchell Marsh to Marnus Labuschagne, everyone contributed, but for the second game in a row, Glenn Maxwell’s onslaught kept the crowd entertained. Fresh from smashing the quickest World Cup hundred in 40 balls against the Netherlands in the last match, Maxi, as fans call him, hit 24-ball 41, hitting two sixes and five boundaries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Although Australia, at one stage, looked like breaching the 400 mark, some smart death bowling from Trent Boult restricted them to a whopping 388 in 50 overs.</p>

<p>Australia's Travis Head played his first game in the ODI World Cup 2023 against New Zealand on October 28 and showed why he was selected in the squad despite being injured. Head had fractured his hand in the ODI series against South Africa before the ODI World Cup but Australia still banked on him.</p>

<p>The batter opened the innings right away for the Aussies, and scored a scintillating hundred off just 59 balls as he added 175 runs for the first wicket with David Warner, who also scored 81 off 65 balls. The duo took the game away from New Zealand in the first 10 overs itself, scoring 118 runs - second most in an ODI World Cup match after West Indies' 119 against Canada in 2003 edition.</p>

<p>Talking about his century during the innings break, Head said: "It's nice to be back with the boys. Nice to contribute. The hand recovery went well. It feels good (on scoring century). It's a very good wicket. Davey (Warner) and I have forged that partnership and tried to go as hard as we can.&nbsp;I think the back end of my innings it started to take spin and they (New Zealand) bowled well."</p>

<p>Head struck 10 fours and seven sixes in his innings before getting out for 109 runs off 67 balls. Head didn't spare any New Zealand bowler but was especially severe on Matt Henry. The Aussie opener hit Henry for 27 runs in 15 balls he faced including three sixes and two fours.</p>

<p>Head also took apart Trent Boult, hitting him for 19 runs in 10 balls with three fours and one six. Mitch Santner, arguably the best Kiwi bowler, was also taken to cleaners by the southpaw as the left-arm spinner got hit for 19 runs in 11 balls.</p>

<p>All-rounder Rachin Ravindra bowled the most deliveries - 16 - to Head and went for 26 runs. Only Glenn Phillips could restrain the explosive batter, giving away just 11 runs in 12 balls and taking his wicket as well. Apart form these, Head scored rest of his seven runs off Lockie Ferguson's four balls he faced.</p>

<p>Thanks to the blitzkrieg by the openers, Australia were able to impose a huge total of 388 runs in 49.2 over before being bowled out.</p>

Head had fractured his hand in the ODI series against South Africa before the ODI World Cup but Australia still banked on him. The batter opened the innings right away for the Aussies, and scored a scintillating hundred off just 59 balls as he added 175 runs for the first wicket with David Warner, who also scored 81 off 65 balls. The duo took the game away from New Zealand in the first 10 overs itself, scoring 118 runs - second most in an ODI World Cup match after West Indies' 119 against Canada in 2003 edition. Nice to contribute. The hand recovery went well. It feels good (on scoring century). It's a very good wicket. Davey (Warner) and I have forged that partnership and tried to go as hard as we can. I think the back end of my innings it started to take spin and they (New Zealand) bowled well." Head struck 10 fours and seven sixes in his innings before getting out for 109 runs off 67 balls. Head didn't spare any New Zealand bowler but was especially severe on Matt Henry. The Aussie opener hit Henry for 27 runs in 15 balls he faced including three sixes and two fours. Head also took apart Trent Boult, hitting him for 19 runs in 10 balls with three fours and one six. Mitch Santner, arguably the best Kiwi bowler, was also taken to cleaners by the southpaw as the left-arm spinner got hit for 19 runs in 11 balls. All-rounder Rachin Ravindra bowled the most deliveries - 16 - to Head and went for 26 runs. Only Glenn Phillips could restrain the explosive batter, giving away just 11 runs in 12 balls and taking his wicket as well. Chasing a steep target of 399 at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, New Zealand were off to a flyer, courtesy of Conway and Will Young, before Josh Hazlewood struck.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was during the eighth over of the innings when New Zealand had already plundered 61 runs that Conway&nbsp;attempted to go after Hazlewood who dug in a short one on middle and leg. The Kiwi batter swivelled and pulled the ball behind square. However, Australian captain Pat Cummins, who had seemingly done his homework, stationed Starc at a widish short fine leg where he leapt to his right and took a stunning catch.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The catch put brakes on the NZ scoring rate and in the very next over of&nbsp;Hazlewood, Young departed as well, gifting a straightforward catch to Starc this time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>New Zealand rode on a stunning knock of an unbeaten 92 from opener Devon Conway and a bowling masterclass from Tim Southee to register a comprehensive win in their opening game of the showpiece event. Asked to bat first in the game, the Kiwis got off to a solid start as openers Fin Allen and Conway took the Aussie bowlers to the cleaners.</p>

<p>Allen went after the hosts from the word go as he scored a quickfire 42 off just 16 balls to add 56 runs for the first wicket with Conway before being cleaned up by Josh Hazlewood.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Conway took charge after Allen's departure and slammed seven fours and two sixes en route to his 58-ball 92. <p>Australia captain Aaron Finch got a classy guard of honour from the New Zealand cricket team ahead of his final ODI in Cairns on Sunday. The ongoing third ODI between Australia and New Zealand is Finch's final fifty-over game for his country as he has decided to retire from the format.</p>

<p>Finch will continue leading Australia in T20Is but has decided to quit ODIs to ensure the next captain gets enough time to prepare with the team for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. As the Aussie skipper walked out to open the innings for the hosts in his final ODI, New Zealand came up with a great gesture.</p>

<p>The Kiwis lined up to give Finch a guard of honour and New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson was seen walking up to him to give him a pat on the back as a mark of appreciation for the Australian captain ahead of his final ODI.</p>

Williamson's 48-ball 85 was laced with ten fours and three sixes.</p>

<p>New Zealand were expected to give a tough time to Australia in the run-chase but the Kiwi bowlers were taken to the cleaners by the Aussie duo of David Warner and Micthell Marsh. Warner scored 53 off 38 balls while Marsh remained unbeaten on 77 off 50 balls to help Australia dominate the run-chase and get over the line with seven balls to spare.</p>

<p>Disappointed by New Zealand's poor show, Gambhir said their performance was not worthy of a final.&nbsp;“My favourite side after India (for the T20 World Cup) was New Zealand. Seeing them bullied around like an apprentice wasn’t a pleasant experience,” Gambhir wrote in his column for <em>Times of India.</em></p>

<p>“They batted very well to score 172 for four. More often than not this kind of score isn’t that tough to defend, especially with a balanced attack like that of New Zealand. But clearly, the occasion got to them as they didn’t look the same team that beat India or England in the semis.” he added.</p>

It wasn’t a performance worthy of a final,” said the 2011 World Cup winner.</p>
