Rohit Sharma has had an inspiring run in international cricket. Touted to be a big name since his early days, he took time to get going after making his India debut after the 2007 ODI World Cup. He, however, produced sporadic performances and was the fourth-slowest Indian to 2,000 ODI runs (by innings). As a result of his inconsistency, Rohit wasn't part of&nbsp;India's victorious 2011&nbsp;World Cup campaign, jointly hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.&nbsp;

However, Rohit has redeemed himself in style. During India's Super Four game versus Sri Lanka in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023, on Tuesday (September 12), Hitman became the second-fastest ever to enter the 10,000-run club in the 50-over format. In less than a month, the 36-year-old will also be leading India in the forthcoming 2023 ODI World Cup, to be held entirely at home, after missing out on the 2011 edition. In addition, he has revived his Test career emphatically since his promotion as an opener in late 2019.

Thus, Rohit is hailed across the cricketing fraternity. Recently, South Africa great AB de Villiers also joined the bandwagon and lauded the Indian captain's incredible 'fighting spirit'.

<h2>'I have a lot of respect for him'</h2>

On his YouTube channel, De Villiers said, “Rohit was fourth slowest to 2000 runs, but the second fastest to 10000. How’s that for a comeback? I have a lot of respect for him. The first time I watched him play, I thought this guy has got something special to offer. What I like most about him - from a very young age, he’s always had a fighting spirit. He would not back down to anyone."

He further recalled, "I think of a Test match in Durban where he just wouldn’t stand back to Dale Steyn or Morne Morkel or any of our fast bowlers. He would make eye contact. If anyone chirped him. He would right in their face, chest out. I always liked that. At that time, I didn’t enjoy it because he was there to beat us. But thinking back, he always had this incredible fighting spirit."

De Villiers spoke on Rohit-Shubman Gill's lethal opening pair (in ODIs) as well. He added, "Very interestingly, he has had an incredible partnership with Shubman Gill. Two fighters at the crease is always a dangerous thing for the opposition. As an opening pair, they are averaging 87-odd (95) with a strike rate of 110. If they can do that for India in the World Cup."

Rohit-starrer India will face Bangladesh on Friday afternoon (September 15) in their last Super Four game of Asia Cup&nbsp;before meeting hosts Sri Lanka in the final on Sunday (September 17). Both the games will be held at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

IND vs BAN Asia Cup match: Head-to-head record of India vs Bangladesh, pitch report, weather update

Pakistan lost to Sri Lanka in both the sides' last Super Four clash of Asia Cup 2023, on Thursday (September 14), which was a virtual semi-final showdown in a bid to join India in the tournament final on Sunday (September 17). Locking horns at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Babar Azam-led Men in Green opted to bat first in a rain-marred contest -- which was reduced to 42 overs a side -- and posted a healthy 252 for 7 riding on Md Rizwan's 86*, Abdullah Shafique's 52 and Iftikhar Ahmed's 47.

Chasing 252 (due to the DLS method), Sri Lanka held their innings beautifully courtesy of Kusal Mendis' 91 and&nbsp;Sadeera Samarawickrama's 47 and were well-placed at 210&nbsp;for 4 in 35 overs before a collapse saw them needing eight off the last six. Eventually, Charith Asalanka's 49 not-out helped the Islanders edge past the Men in Green to set up a final clash versus Rohit Sharma's Team India.

After Pakistan's exit, Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar reacted to their early exit and feels Babar Azam's captaincy needs to be 'sharpened' ahead of the ODI World Cup, commencing in India early next month.

<h2>'Pakistan&nbsp;were touted as the 'favourites' but are out of the tournament'</h2>

"You've seen the match. Pakistan are out of the tournament. The match that was made in favour of Pakistan, was all done by Zaman Khan. He landed the day before yesterday and this boy did excellent bowling in the Pakistan Super League. Whatever chances Pakistan had of winning the match were all because of him. Shaheen Afridi also got a few wickets but credit goes to Zaman. He bowled really well,"&nbsp;Akhtar said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Akhtar opined, "Pakistan deserved to win, go to the Asia Cup final but they are out of the tournament. They can be criticised a lot as they were touted as the 'favourites' but are out of the tournament now. Unfortunately, there can't be a Pakistan vs India match in the final, it has never happened (kabhi Pakistan, India ka match (final) ho nahi sakta, kabhi hua nahi). This was the chance but Sri Lanka deserved to be the finalists. They were the far better team."

"Having said that this is a very embarrassing loss. The fact that Pakistan are out of the tournament, doesn't look nice. Pakistan have a lot to think about. The captaincy needs to sharpen up a bit. I am very disappointed. Can't say more," the former pacer concluded.

Pakistan -- the No. 1 ODI side -- started the tournament on a roll but fell apart after their 228-run Super Four loss to India early this week. While they competed well versus the Lankans, they never applied enough pressure with the ball in the middle overs to finish second. Injury concerns to Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf, overdependence on Shaheen Afridi and Babar's struggles in the Super Four led to their exit.

Babar Azam's captaincy needs to sharpen: Akhtar reacts after Pakistan lose to Sri Lanka to bow out of Asia Cup

India's Test specialist R Ashwin has lauded KL Rahul and feels the right-hander is providing stability with the bat in the middle-order. Rahul made his return to international cricket after a long injury layoff, since early May, during the Super Four round of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 edition and has had scores of 111* and 39, versus Pakistan and Sri Lanka, respectively. Thus, Ashwin feels Rahul is 'slowly mastering his role perfectly' of batting in the middle order.

<h2>'MS Dhoni nailed that art. KL Rahul is slowly mastering his role perfectly'</h2>

"KL Rahul is giving us that stability with the bat in the middle-order," Ashwin was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times. "That’s why batting in the middle order is really difficult. MS Dhoni nailed that art. However, I am not at all comparing KL Rahul with MS Dhoni. Plus, he did a different role of batting at number 6/7 compared to KL Rahul," he opined.

Ashwin added, "But I feel he is slowly mastering his role perfectly. He put a partnership with Ishan Kishan initially against Sri Lanka too. When Dunith Wellalage was in a great rhythm, KL Rahul left it alone for two deliveries. That was a very good sign. It showed us that he had a good game plan."

Rahul missed the group stage of the Asia Cup and was drafted into the playing XI at the last minute during the India-Pakistan Super Four stage after Shreyas Iyer's back issues. He returned in style,&nbsp;slamming a brilliant 111 not out whereas also looked most comfortable during India's spin struggles versus the Islanders. He ended with a sublime 39 and was sharp behind the stumps with his movements and valuable inputs to the bowlers.&nbsp;

Sri Lanka and Pakistan produced a thriller in their last Super Four clash of the Asia Cup on Thursday (September 14). Competing with each other for the remaining spot in the tournament final -- with India&nbsp;qualifying on Tuesday (September 12)&nbsp;-- the two Asian giants produced a riveting clash, in a rain-marred contest, where Kusal Mendis' 91 and Charith Asalanka's 49* propelled their side to a two-wicket win.

Opting to bat first, at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Babar Azam-led Men in Green posted 252 for 7 in a 42-over contest (which was initially a 45-over affair before another rain break reduced it further). Md Rizwan stood tall with an impressive 86 not out, Abdullah Shafique's 52 and Iftikhar Ahmed's 47 took them to a competitive score. In reply, the Lankans ticked the basics and were cruising at 210 for 3 before a flurry of wickets opened the contest and took it to the final over.

Eventually, the Islanders edged past Pakistan on the last ball to set up a final clash with India. With this, Pakistan -- the No. 1 ODI side -- have bowed out of the competition with two successive losses in the Super Four round (having earlier lost to India by 228 runs). After the match, captain Babar said in the post-match presentation, "We just decided to bowl our best overs and asked Shaheen to bowl the second last over and believed in Zaman. Sri Lanka played very well, better cricket than us."

“We have not been up to the mark in the bowling and fielding. That is why we lost the match. In the middle overs, we did not bowl well. That partnership cost us. We started well, ended well, but middle overs were not great. We have lacked that,” Babar added.

Sri Lanka have now entered their 11th Asia Cup final where they will meet Rohit Sharma-led India on September 17 (Sunday) at the same venue in Colombo. Meanwhile, the wait for fans&nbsp;to see&nbsp;India and Pakistan lock horns in the final of the continental tournament's history continues.&nbsp;

Sri Lanka played better cricket: Captain Babar Azam on Pakistan's Asia Cup 2023 elimination

Sri Lanka spinner Dunith Wellalage delivered one of the most memorable performances of the Asia Cup 2023 on September 12 &nbsp;against India. The left-arm bowler not only took a five-wicket haul but also scored 42 not out to give India a scare during the chase as well. The spinner also got the well-deserved Player of the Match award for his performance.

Wellalage, who took the wickets of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya, called Kohli the number-one batsman and said he was happy to dismiss both Kohli and Rohit.

“For me, Virat Kohli is the No. 1 batsman. I am very happy to have got those two (Kohli and Rohit) big wickets. I trust my basics, and trust myself,” said Wellalage at the post-match press conference.

Speaking on his strategy during the game, he said: "The batters were set and India had got off to a fabulous start. I just tried to bowl wicket to wicket. Once we got those three wickets in three overs, we were able to put India under pressure.

“There was turn and when you put the ball in the right area, you could unsettle the batsmen. But I would have been happier with a win,” said Wellalage.

Chasing 214, Sri Lanka were six down for 99 before Wellalage shared a crucial 63-run partnership with Dhananjaya de Silva to revive Lankan fans' hope. While the dream of a win couldn't materialise, the partnership did give India a scare.

“I just tried to support him (de Silva). We didn’t want to take any risks. His plan was to try and get closer to India’s total,” Wellalage said.

Sri Lanka will now be playing against Pakistan on September 14 in a virtual semi-final for a place in the title clash against India and Wellalage is hopeful of a Lankan win.

“We have played four matches so far and we are happy that we have won three of them. The larger picture is that we have got one more game remaining.

“We still have a chance to make it to the finals, and hopefully we will pull it off,” he added.

Asia Cup: Sri Lanka spinner Dunith Wellalage opens up on his Player of the Match performance vs India

Team India will rest several first-team players against Bangladesh in their last Asia Cup Super Four tie on Friday, September 15. The Men in Blue were the first team to qualify for the Asia Cup final after beating Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Against Bangladesh in the dead rubber in Colombo, India could rest seamers, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, bringing in Mohammed Shami and Prasidh Krishna in their place.

The latest reports suggest that vice-captain Hardik Pandya could also be rested while bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur could return for his third game match of Asia Cup 2023.&nbsp;

Though none of the top three - Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli is likely to make way for anyone, chances of watching non-regular faces in the middle order in this game are higher.

KL Rahul, who returned to the ODI XI for the first time since March this year, scored a hundred against Pakistan in the previous game, while Kishan also pressed his case for a spot in the side as the World Cup approaches. Besides them, Shreyas Iyer, who sweat it out in the nets in the additional session on Thursday in Colombo, might not get included in the XI due to his fitness.

In this case, if the management decides to rest both KL and Kishan, star T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav and debutant Tilak Varma could be seen taking care of middle-order duties.&nbsp;

While SKY, as most of Suryakumar fans call him, has received backing from several former cricketers over straightaway breaking into the XI during the mega event, he would love to bank on it and convert it into a star performance.

It could also mean that Tilak Varma, the future superstar, could begin his ODI journey on a grand stage like the Asia Cup.&nbsp;

<h2>Benched players to be tried</h2>

While Shami and Krishna are likely to get a game against Bangladesh, the star performer in the bowling department - Kuldeep Yadav, will retain his place in the XI alongside Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, both of whom played against Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, India will face the winner of the Sri Lanka vs. Pakistan match in Super Four in Colombo in the final on September 17.

PAK vs SL live streaming: When and where to watch Asia Cup 2023 Pakistan vs Sri Lanka live on mobile, TV

Bangladesh is out of the race for a spot in the Asia Cup final, but captain Shakib Al Hasan feels they can still end the tournament on a high. Hit by an array of injuries to senior players and a few match winners, Bangladesh had limited resources to turn fortunes and stay ahead of the cricketing giants. But as fate would have, they fell shy, failing to convert their chances into wins during the Super Four stage.

Speaking to the media ahead of Bangladesh's final match in this six-team tournament, Shakib said he alone is not responsible for the team finding results, as everyone playing at this level knows their roles and must play accordingly if Bangladesh is to stand tall.&nbsp;

He added the focus remains on the collective team effort as Bangladesh will aim to upset India and head into the dress rehearsal - the home three-match New Zealand ODIs, with their heads high.

"Look, the responsibility does not lie on my shoulder because everyone has some kind of responsibility," Shakib said.

"I am sure everyone will work to fulfil his part, and if everyone can contribute only then we have a good chance to do well, and if we can add all the individual performance together only at that point we can do well. They haven't contributed that much, and they know that. They are trying to do that," the veteran all-rounder added.

Upon being asked if there is something the Bangladesh team is looking forward to against India despite this game being a dead rubber, Shakib said,&nbsp;"Yes, there are things to gain. If we can win the last match before returning to the country, it would be a good thing. We don't want anything else from the match, just the win will do."

<h2>Not all is over for Bangladesh</h2>

Having a talented pool of youngsters, the Bangladesh team was happy to give chances to some budding youngsters during this Asia Cup. While the absence of seasoned campaigners like Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim didn't leave them much of an experienced XI to go ahead with, the presence of emerging stars would keep them alive in the contest against India.

Following this, Bangladesh will host New Zealand before flying to India for the mega event, where they open their campaign against Afghanistan on October 7 in Dharamsala.

Speaking to the media ahead of Bangladesh's final match in this six-team tournament, Shakib said he alone is not responsible for the team finding results, as everyone playing at this level knows their roles and must play accordingly if Bangladesh is to stand tall. He added the focus remains on the collective team effort as Bangladesh will aim to upset India and head into the dress rehearsal - the home three-match New Zealand ODIs, with their heads high. IND vs BAN: ‘The responsibility does not lie on my shoulder...,' Shakib urges Bangladesh to pull up socks

From suffering back-related issues since March this year to recovering and returning in time for the Asia Cup 2023 to again getting back spasms ahead of the marquee clash against Pakistan in the Super Four, India batter Shreyas Iyer has gone through a lot. Now, ahead of India's last Asia Cup Super-Four tie against Bangladesh on Friday in Colombo, Iyer looked comfortable in the optional training session for selected players, indicating his much-anticipated return to the XI.

Given injuries to several top players in the lead-up to two multi-team tournaments, be it Iyer, KL Rahul, and Jasprit Bumrah, India couldn't field its best XI yet. Now, with Iyer showing no signs of discomfort while playing in the nets, chances of him returning for the Bangladesh game and the final are high and will give India an edge over their opponents.

Iyer was among the few players - Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav, alongside the coaching staff that organised an additional training camp in Colombo on the eve of the India-Bangladesh match.&nbsp;

After doing jogging and stretching earlier, Iyer faced underarm and quick throwdowns in the nets before taking on the net bowlers. From hitting soothing drives to playing backfoot shots, Iyer sweated hard and made the most of this session.&nbsp;

Batting coach Vikram Rathore also applauded Iyer as he inched closer to sealing his spot in the XI with each shot in the nets.

<h2>India preparing surprise factor for crucial ties</h2>

Meanwhile, considering how well spinners have fared in Colombo, having an additional option under the sleeve would not be a bad option for any captain. Also, with India already qualifying for the Asia Cup final, they can rest some players and bring in newcomers like Tilak Varma, who can bat and offer off-spin bowling for the Bangladesh game.

Speaking on the same lines, the bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, who worked with Tilak since the Under-19 days, said with him bowling some spin in this additional training session, the decision makers can look into playing him at some point if required.

"We have been working with Tilak since the Under-19 days," Mhambrey said after training. "I felt that when we had gone to South Africa for Under-19 (World Cup), he had a bowling skill that we could definitely use, and so we have been working on that consistently."

"We are looking to see if he plays and manages to get a chance to bowl even one over, we'll start from there. If we can look at that and gain confidence from his bowling, the captain will have an option."

"In case we need an extra spinner given the circumstances - based on conditions or opposition batters - especially if there are left-handers and you need an offspinner, we need an option to go to. So, we are working with him on his bowling," the bowling coach added.

PAK vs SL do-or-die Asia Cup match: Head-to-head record of Pakistan vs Sri Lanka, pitch report, weather update

Kuldeep Yadav is in top form in 2023. The 28-year-old has already scalped 31 wickets in ODIs this year and is set to play a key role for India in the Asia Cup 2023 final, on Sunday (September 17) in Colombo, and the upcoming ODI World Cup at home, which kicks off early next month. In the ongoing Super Four stage of the Asia Cup, Kuldeep has nine wickets from two games (5 for 25 versus Pakistan and 4 for 43 against Sri Lanka). Thus, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra made a big claim on Kuldeep.

<h2>'Kuldeep is the best spinner in the world at the moment'</h2>

Chopra said on his YouTube channel, "I feel Kuldeep is the best spinner in the world at the moment. If you see Kuldeep Yadav's numbers, you say he is a proper wicket-taker. We are talking about spinners who have taken 150 ODI wickets. Firstly, 150 wickets is a very good number, it is not a small sample size."

Chopra further added, "He has taken only 85 innings to pick up 150 wickets. He has a strike rate of 30.1. He is special because he is orthodox. If you talk about Ajantha Mendis and Rashid Khan, they had or have mystery. This guy has no mystery. He bowls normal leg-spin and googly and traps you with that itself."

Talking about Kuldeep's spell versus Sri Lanka, in the Super Four clash on Tuesday (September 12), the wily spinner accounted for four key scalps to dent the Lankans' 213-run chase at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. He also entered the 150-wicket club in just 85 ODI innings.&nbsp;

Asia Cup 2023: He is the best spinner at the moment - Former India opener lauds Kuldeep Yadav

On Tuesday (September 12), India beat Sri Lanka by 41 runs in a crucial Super Four clash, in Colombo, to book a spot in the Asia Cup 2023 final. Batting first, India were 80 for no loss before the Sri Lankan spin duo of&nbsp;Dunith Wellalage (5 for 40) and Charith Asalanka (4 for 18) reduced them to 186 for 9. Eventually, Axar Patel's 26 led India to 213 all-out in 49.1 overs after Rohit Sharma's 53 and KL Rahul's sublime 39. In reply, Sri Lanka folded for 172 in 41.3 overs with Kuldeep Yadav starring with the ball (4 for 43).&nbsp;

Throughout the contest, India were tested. While their batters were clueless versus the SL spinners, they somehow managed to go past the 200-run mark. While defending 213, Indian bowlers started on a positive note with Jasprit Bumrah striking twice whereas Md Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja also added to SL's woes. The Lankans were 25 for 3 and further reduced to 99 for 6 but a timely 63-run seventh-wicket stand between Dhananjaya de Silva and Wellalage (42*) took the home side to 162 for 6. Nonetheless, India kept fighting hard and eventually rode on Kuldeep's four-fer to dismiss the opposition for 172 in 41.3 overs.&nbsp;

<h2>'Are you out of your mind?'</h2>

After the game, Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar lauded Team India and rubbished claims of India purposely trying to lose to the Lankans, which would have eliminated Pakistan. On his YouTube channel, he said, "What has happened to people? They are saying that India is losing to Sri Lanka purposely and there are memes made on it. Are you out of your mind? Didn't you see how well Asalanka and Wellalage bowled? Why will they want to lose so that Pakistan goes out? They wanted to go to the final and gave it their all in the field."

“India gave their heart out in the field. Just loved the way each bowler showed the fight, be it Kuldeep, Bumrah, Hardik, Siraj and even Jadeja. He contributes with bat, ball and also in the field,” Akhtar added.

India will now take on Bangladesh in their last Super Four clash on Friday (September 15) before turning up for the tournament finale, both to be held at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, on Sunday (September 17). They will face the winner of Pakistan versus Sri Lanka, on Thursday (September 14) in Colombo, in the summit clash.

They wanted to go to the final and gave it their all in the field." Just loved the way each bowler showed the fight, be it Kuldeep, Bumrah, Hardik, Siraj and even Jadeja. He contributes with bat, ball and also in the field,” Akhtar added. India will now take on Bangladesh in their last Super Four clash on Friday (September 15) before turning up for the tournament finale, both to be held at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, on Sunday (September 17). Shoaib Akhtar lauds India after SL win propels them to Asia Cup final, slams FIXING claims against Rohit & Co.

Ahead of Pakistan's must-win Super Four game versus Sri Lanka in Asia Cup 2023, on Thursday (September 14), the Men in Green bowling coach Morne Morkel reflected on the national side's 228-run loss versus arch-rivals India on Monday (September 12). The No. 1 ranked ODI side started the continental tournament as hot favourites and kicked off the Super Four round with a seven-wicket win over Bangladesh. However, they need nothing less than a win to proceed to the final when they face hosts Sri Lanka, at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, following the India hammering.

Talking about the India game, which was a two-day affair due to rain and wet outfield, Morkel said in the SL pre-match presser, "After the India match, we were bitterly disappointed. For me, it is very important for the bowlers to do a bit of self-reflection, ask yourself the hard questions. Yes, credit must also go to the Indian batters."

He further asserted, ''They put us under pressure early. Those are fantastic lessons for us before the World Cup. We are gonna grow from this and come back stronger."

Talking about the India-Pakistan Super Four tie, Babar Azam &amp; Co. opted to bowl first but India rode on fifties from captain Rohit Sharma (56) and Shubman Gill (58) before Virat Kohli (122*) and KL Rahul (111*) took them to a mammoth 356/2. In reply, Pakistan folded for 128 in 32 overs to lose by 228 runs (their biggest ODI loss versus India in terms of runs) on the reserve day on Monday evening. With this loss, Pakistan are now on the verge of an early elimination as they need to beat Dasun Shanaka-led Islanders on Thursday. If rain plays spoilsport, the Lankans will enter the final to face India on Sunday (September 17).

On the possible conditions for the Lanka encounter, Morkel added, "The conditions are spin-friendly and I think our spinners are working really hard at the moment. They will be the first to put up their hands when it is needed. They are all match-winners and experienced players. They know how to make comebacks."

Babar-led Pakistan have a herculean task versus Sri Lanka, who have in-form spinners in Dunith Wellalage (who claimed 5 for 40 versus India), Maheesh Pathirana, Charith Asalanka, etc. in their ranks. <h2>All Asia Cup final scenarios</h2>

The Men in Blue had a memorable 24 hours on Monday and Tuesday evening as they got the better of Pakistan and Sri Lanka, respectively at the Asia Cup Super Four stage. Bangladesh are no longer in the race for the final having lost to Sri Lanka by 21 runs and Pakistan by seven wickets. This leaves both Pakistan and Sri Lanka scrambling for the other spot in the final.

Despite losing to India by a record margin, Pakistan’s net run rate won’t be an issue if they are to reach the final. The Sri Lanka vs Pakistan clash on Thursday will be a virtual semifinal, with the winner going through to the final. While Sri Lanka sit second in the Super Four standings, they will be replaced by Babar Azam’s men if they get the better of them. A win for Sri Lanka will also see them reach the final for the second year running as they will end at&nbsp;four points.

However, in case of a washout, the points will be shared and Sri Lanka will qualify on a superior net run rate (NRR). Sri Lanka have a NRR of -0.200 while Pakistan's NRR is -1.892.&nbsp;

On the flip side, India’s contest against Bangladesh will be a dead rubber and could offer them the opportunity to rotate the squad. Shreyas Iyer could be drafted into the team with Mohammed Shami also in the frame to play the Bangladesh contest.

<h2>What happened in the India vs Sri Lanka contest?</h2>

The contest played at the R.Premadasa Stadium saw India win by 41 runs while defending 213 on the board. Spinners from both sides were in top form as they scalped 16 wickets in total with India’s entire batting unit falling prey to the exploits of Dunith Wellalage (5 wickets) and Charith Asalanka (4 wickets) while Kuldeep was once again on song with four wickets for Team India.

Explained: How India and Pakistan could meet in the Asia Cup 2023 final

Pakistan pace bowler Naseem Shah has been ruled out of the remainder of the Asia Cup 2023 with a shoulder injury. The fast bowler had injured his shoulder in Super Four clash against India on September 11 towards the end of India's innings. Zaman Khan has been called up by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as a replacement.

Pakistan will be playing Sri Lanka on September 14 in a virtual semi-final to set up the title clash against India on September 17. The PCB has said that the bowler is continuously being "monitored by the team's medical panel that is taking all necessary precautions."

Naseem is one of the integral members of the Pakistan pace attack which also comprises Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf. Together, the trio makes one of the most complete and fearsome pace bowling attacks in the world as was visible during the Asia Cup group stage clash against India where they had taken all 10 wickets.

Apart from Naseem, Rauf had also picked up a niggle in the Super Four game against India. The duo had also opted not to bat in the match which they had lost by 228 runs - their biggest loss in terms of runs against India in ODIs.

Speaking on the fast bowlers' condition, team doctor Sohail Saleem said, "These two fast bowlers are our assets and the team's medical panel will provide them the best possible care ahead of the all-important World Cup."

Apart from Zaman, the PCB had also called Shahnawaz Dahani as a back-up by the PCB when the two pacers had picked injuries. At the time, the board had said that the bowlers wouldn't be ruled out of the tournament and would remain under observation.

With the ICC World Cup set to start next month on October 5 in India, the decision by the PCB is an obvious one - keeping their premium bowlers safe for the marquee tournament.

Asia Cup: Pakistan's Naseem Shah ruled out of remainder of tournament due to shoulder injury

Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim will not be available for the Super Four clash in the Asia Cup against India. Rahim, who last played on September 9, has been 'granted extension of leave' by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to be with his family. The game, which is scheduled on Friday, September 15, is of the least importance with Bangladesh already out of contention to make it to the final of the regional tournament. &nbsp;

Rahim had returned to Dhaka after the game against Sri Lanka on September 9 to be with his wife for the birth of their second child. He was initially expected to join the team for their last game in the Asia Cup but now has been granted permission to stay home.

"Mushfiqur has informed us that his wife is still recovering [after giving birth], and he needs to be by her side and with their children at this time," BCB cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus said in a statement. "We fully understand his situation and have decided to permit him to skip the game."

Bangladesh, in Super Four, had lost to Pakistan and Sri Lanka and with India already in the final after they won their two games, the winner of Pakistan and Sri Lanka will join Men in Blue in the final. In case rain plays spoilsport in the Pakistan vs Sri Lanka game and the match is abandoned, host Sri Lanka will go through the final.

Mushfiqur has been one of the few bright spots in Bangladesh's otherwise poor Asia Cup campaign where they won a solitary game against Afghanistan in the group stage and lost twice to Sri Lanka &amp; once to Pakistan.

Rahim scored 131 runs in four innings at an average of 32.75 with a highest of 64 against Pakistan in a losing cause.

Asia Cup: Bangladesh batsman Mushfiqur Rahim to skip Super Four game against India

Kuldeep Yadav starred with the ball for Team India in their successful defence of 213 versus Sri Lanka in the crucial Super Four clash in Asia Cup 2023 on Tuesday (September 12) in Colombo. Batting first, India only managed a below-par 213 all-out in 49.1 overs as the Sri Lankan spin duo of&nbsp;Dunith Wellalage and Charith Asalanka wreaked havoc with regular strikes, and the former accounting for 5 for 40. However, Jasprit Bumrah's early breakthroughs dented SL's run-chase from the word go before Ravindra Jadeja (2 for 33) and Kuldeep (4 for 43) bundled out the Lankans for 172 in 41.3 overs.&nbsp;

After the match, the 28-year-old Kuldeep credited Suryakumar Yadav's pep talk for his splendid spell on a tricky surface.&nbsp;"You gave a pep talk before the game and asked me not to lose grip in this game. A bowler's body language changes after bagging a five-for. He gets relaxed, though the confidence remains. It often happens with a bowler. So, that two minutes of pep talk really helped," Kuldeep told Suryakumar, who came as a substitute and contributed with two good catches, in a conversation on bcci.tv.

Captain Rohit also lauded Kuldeep for his improved and consistent run in the recent year. After the SL win, he told the broadcasters,&nbsp;"For the past year or so, he's bowling really really well. He has done a lot of hard work on his rhythm. He went back to the drawing board and worked on it. The ball is coming out nicely and you can see the results in the last 10 ODIs."

Kuldeep has been in fine form in ODIs. In 2023, he is India's leading run-getter with as many as 31 scalps and has set the stage on fire in the ongoing continental tournament with nine wickets in India's two Super Four games so far. He accounted for 5 for 25 versus Pakistan and will be eager to carry on with the momentum in their remaining tie versus Bangladesh on September 15 at the same venue; i.e. the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. India will then gear up for the Asia Cup final, having secured a spot after the SL win, where they are set to meet the winner of the Pakistan-Sri Lanka face-off, on September 14.&nbsp;

The tournament finale will be held at the same venue in Colombo on Sunday afternoon (September 17).

Batting first, India only managed a below-par 213 all-out in 49.1 overs as the Sri Lankan spin duo of Dunith Wellalage and Charith Asalanka wreaked havoc with regular strikes, and the former accounting for 5 for 40. However, Jasprit Bumrah's early breakthroughs dented SL's run-chase from the word go before Ravindra Jadeja (2 for 33) and Kuldeep (4 for 43) bundled out the Lankans for 172 in 41.3 overs. After the match, the 28-year-old Kuldeep credited Suryakumar Yadav's pep talk for his splendid spell on a tricky surface. "You gave a pep talk before the game and asked me not to lose grip in this game. He went back to the drawing board and worked on it. The ball is coming out nicely and you can see the results in the last 10 ODIs." Kuldeep has been in fine form in ODIs. In 2023, he is India's leading run-getter with as many as 31 scalps and has set the stage on fire in the ongoing continental tournament with nine wickets in India's two Super Four games so far. He accounted for 5 for 25 versus Pakistan and will be eager to carry on with the momentum in their remaining tie versus Bangladesh on September 15 at the same venue; i.e. the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. India will then gear up for the Asia Cup final, having secured a spot after the SL win, where they are set to meet the winner of the Pakistan-Sri Lanka face-off, on September 14. Batting first, India managed a below-par 213 in 49.1 overs with Rohit Sharma (53) and KL Rahul (39) being the top run-scorers. For&nbsp;Sri Lanka, their spin duo --&nbsp;Dunith Wellalage and Charith Asalanka -- led the charge and shared nine wickets, with Wellalage returning with 5 for 40, but the home side's batting line-up didn't perform well and&nbsp;the team&nbsp;was bundled out for just 172 in 41.3 overs.

Asia Cup: Harbhajan Singh in awe of KL Rahul after stellar form, says 'he is scoring runs in sublime fashion'

On Tuesday (September 12), Rohit Sharma-led India beat Sri Lanka by 41 runs in a hard-fought low-scoring Super Four contest&nbsp;at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, to book a spot in the Asia Cup 2023 final. Batting first, India rode on Rohit Sharma's 53, KL Rahul's 39 and Axar Patel's vital 26 to post a below-par&nbsp;213 in 49.1 overs as Sri Lankan spin duo --&nbsp;Dunith Wellalage and Charith Asalanka -- wreaked havoc with regular strikes. In reply, Indian bowlers combined to put up a spirited show to dismiss the Lankans for 172 in 41.3 overs.

Throughout the game, India were tested to the core. Their batters struggled versus the SL spinners on a tricky surface -- with a lot of spin and lateral movement on offer -- before they came out all guns blazing with the ball. Despite reducing the Islanders to 25 for 3, India had to overcome some tricky periods with the Lankans -- led by Dhananjaya de Silva (41) and Wellalge (42*) -- striving&nbsp;hard to stay alive in the contest. From 99 for 6, the hosts revamped at 162 for 6, courtesy of Dhananjaya-Wellalge's 63-run seventh-wicket stand,&nbsp;and it was their game to lose before the partnership was broken to end Sri Lanka's resistance.

After India's impressive win, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir lauded the overall team effort. He feels it was a more 'convincing' win for the Men in Blue than the one they achieved over Pakistan, where India won by 228 runs on Monday (September 11) in Colombo.

"This victory for me was more convincing than Pakistan. We won against Pakistan by 228 runs but this would give them a lot of confidence," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

Gambhir further added, "Defending 217 against Sri Lanka, they are a really good side playing against spin. This would give them a lot of confidence going into the final and then the World Cup. because the moment your Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav start firing, I think it gives a lot of confidence to the captain."

With the ball, Jasprit Bumrah (2 for 30) and Md Siraj (1 for 17) started really well before Ravindra Jadeja (2 for 33) and Kuldeep Yadav (4 for 43) led India to a hard-fought win to take the national side to the summit clash. Asia Cup: India's win vs Sri Lanka was more convincing than Pakistan, says former opener Gautam Gambhir

Former ODI World Cup winner Piyush Chawla is in awe of Kuldeep Yadav after the left-arm spinner scalped four wickets in a narrow win against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023 contest. Kuldeep, who will be a key member of the Indian ODI World Cup squad, was picked ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal for the tournament. According to Chawla, he has no fear of getting dropped as he is enjoying the form of his life.

<h2>Chawla in awe of Kuldeep</h2>

“Sometimes you have that fear of failure. Because you think if I don't get the wickets then I might not play the next game. So once that fear is out of your mind, you try to get more attacking and you're not scared of getting hit, and in that process, you end up getting up more wickets,” said Chawla while speaking on Star Sports.

The 28-year-old has enjoyed a stellar 24 hours since Monday evening as he picked five wickets against Pakistan followed by four against Sri Lanka on Tuesday. He was instrumental in India’s success on the flat tracks of Colombo and will be expected to perform at the same heights during the World Cup in India next month.

He along with Jadeja picked six wickets on Tuesday as there were encouraging signs for the duo after Sri Lankan spinners scalped all of India’s 10 wickets. The spin-friendly environment in Colombo could play a key role as India bid for their seventh Asia Cup title.

“So that's what he's doing at the moment. He's not scared of, there's no fear of failure. He’s just coming and he's enjoying his bowling and the best part is he's looking to get wickets in every over,” Chawla added.

<h2>Can Kuldeep challenge Jadeja?</h2>

The India team will now take on Bangladesh in the dead-rubber clash where Kuldeep will have the opportunity to close the gap on Ravindra Jadeja for the most wickets in the Asia Cup (ODIs). Currently, he has 19 wickets (nine in the last two matches) and is five wickets behind Jadeja who resides on 24. The duo will be expected to take the field in the match while the eyes will be firmly cast on Sunday’s final against either Pakistan or Sri Lanka.

Asia Cup 2023: Ravindra Jadeja leapfrogs Irfan Pathan in THIS tally after narrow win vs Sri Lanka

India scripted their biggest win against Pakistan in ODIs after beating their arch-rivals by 228 runs in the rain-affected Super Four clash in the Asia Cup 2023 on September 11. The game, which went on for two days, saw Indians dominate with both bat and ball, especially spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the spin department.

The Pakistan team batted till just eight wickets as fast bowlers Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf didn't bat after picking up injuries and the Indians&nbsp;took full advantage of the situation. It was Kuldeep who made sure that the huge chase of 357 runs didn't get going for Pakistan at any point in the match as he finished with a five-for. The spinner, who is now India's leading wicket-taker in the ODIs in 2023 with 27 scalps, credited his run-up and 'aggressive approach' for the success.

"It's been over one and a half years since I had surgery," Kuldeep said after the win. "The run-up has become straighter. The rhythm has become aggressive. The approach is nice. Maybe my hand used to fall over but that is well in control and faces the batter more.

"At the same time, I did not lose my spin and drift, and my pace increased - all of which helped me. If a leg-spinner lands the ball on a good length, there are more chances of [him] picking up a wicket. If you are a leg-spinner, you tend to bowl a lot of loose balls but if you become consistent, you can succeed."

It was a complete game from the Indians' point of view ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup. They ticked all the boxes with the bat as the top four scored a fifty+ score against a lethal Pakistan attack. Virat Kohli also showed why he's considered the greatest of all time after he hit his fourth consecutive century in Colombo and 47th overall in ODIs.

In the bowling department too, Jasprit Bumrah made the ball talk in the initial overs, while Mohammad Siraj, Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur all played their role to perfection.

<h2>India defend 213</h2>

Tasked to defend 213 for India, Sri Lanka did not have the best start as they lost three wickets in the first powerplay. The hosts were 25/3 before Sadeera Samarawickrama (17) and Asalanka (22) built a mini-partnership of 43 runs for the fourth wicket. India quickly gained control of the contest with another three quick-fire wickets as Sri Lanka were 99/6 with Kuldeep and Jadeja running riot with the ball.

However, India then faced a frustrating period as Sri Lanka almost gained a commanding position in the match. Dhananjaya de Silva (41) and Dunith Wellalage (42) stitched 63 runs for the seventh wicket as Sri Lanka needed just 51 runs to win the contest before the former was dismissed.

Kuldeep then wrapped the tail, ending with figures of 43/4 while Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah scalped two wickets each for India. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 172 and will have a tough task in hand when they take on Pakistan.

<h2>Sri Lanka restrict India</h2>

Earlier, the pair of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were seen in great nick before the latter was dismissed by Wellalage on his first ball of the match. Gill failed to judge the flight of the delivery and was nowhere near when he was castled on the first ball of the 12th over. The pair put together 80 runs for the opening wicket before the landslide of wickets started for India.

The 20-year-old did not sit back in his exploits as he got the better of skipper Rohit on 53 before striking big with Virat Kohli’s wicket. KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya were then in the firing line as they were dismissed for 39 and 5 respectively. Wellalage’s impact left Team India in a spot of bother as they quickly went from 80/0 to 186/9, losing nine wickets in a span of 106 runs. India were finally bowled out for 213 in 49.1 overs.

India will now take on Bangladesh on Friday, September 15 with qualification already secured while Sri Lanka will take on Pakistan on Thursday in a virtual knockout. The winner of Sri Lanka vs Pakistan will likely face India in the final on Sunday at the same venue.
