Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made US Secretary Antony Blinken wait for hours: Report

<p>Amid soaring tensions in West Asia, the United States has put about 2,000 troops on prepare-to-deploy orders for possible support to Israel, the Associated Press reported on Monday citing a defence official.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The readiness appeared to be in anticipation of an Israeli ground invasion of Gaza, which is aimed at rescuing hostages taken during the Oct 7 attack by Hamas and crushing the militant group that rules the enclave.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But the US-based media outlets cited the official as further saying that the troops are not being sent anywhere yet, nor would they necessarily go to Israel or Gaza.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report added the US soldiers would not be sent to Israel but could be assigned to other countries so that they help with&nbsp;medical assistance and other humanitarian services.&nbsp;</p>

Blinken, however, added that the Palestinians also have "legitimate aspirations" which do not get represented by Hamas.</p>

As Blinken heads to Israel, US urges nations to use influence to get Hamas to stand down

<p>US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Thursday (Sep 28) that China was seeking to overtake the United States and become top power in the world. He also opined on the latest developments surrounding Taiwan.</p>

<p>A number of US presidents have described China as the top long-term challenge to the US. However, some analysts believe that China's ambitions are more focussed on reducing Washington's influence in Asia than being pre-eminent power in the world.</p>

<p>"I think that what it seeks is to be the dominant power in the world -- militarily, economically, diplomatically," said Blinken when asked at a forum about China's intentions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"That's what Xi Jinping is seeking," he said.</p>

<p>"And in a sense, that's not a surprise. There's an extraordinary history in China," he added.</p>

<p>"I think if you look and listen to Chinese leaders, they are seeking to recover what they believe is their rightful place in the world."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Blinken was speaking at the event organized by The Atlantic magazine. In past, he has spoken in more indirect terms saying China was seeking to "reshape the international order."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tension are currently high between the US and China. President Joe Biden administration has maintained that it is clear-eyed on China and was stepping up pressure on the country. But it has also taken steps to maintain dialogue between the two nations. Blinken visited Beijing in June this year.</p>

<p>"Were there to be a crisis over Taiwan precipitated by Chinese actions, you would have a global economic crisis," Blinken said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I think the message that China is hearing increasingly from countries around the world is, don't stir the pot. &nbsp;</p>

India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar met the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington DC on Thursday (Sep 28) amid the diplomatic standoff between India and Canada over the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar met the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington DC on Thursday (Sep 28) amid the diplomatic standoff between India and Canada over the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. But interestingly, the issue did not figure publicly in the meeting. Speaking to reporters, Blinken said that he and Jaishankar have had very good discussions at the recently-concluded G20 Summit in New Delhi and the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. "Good to be back here (in the US). We of course had Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) here this summer. We thank the US for all the support at the G20 Summit. And I actually look forward to seeing you (Blinken) in New Delhi," Jaishankar said. #WATCH | Washington, DC: EAM Dr S Jaishankar meets US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. pic.twitter.com/HC7LCUkRSD — ANI (@ANI) September 28, 2023 × The two leaders did not say anything about the row between India and Canada over Nijjar's killing. "Is Canada impacting your relationship?," a reporter present at the press conference asked Blinken, but the question went unanswered. Trudeau was 'sure' that Blinken would raise Nijjar's murder with India Earlier on Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had said he was sure that Blinken would raise Nijjar's murder during his meeting with Jaishankar. "The Americans will certainly discuss this matter with the Indian government," Trudeau told reporters. Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was labelled a terrorist by New Delhi in 2020, was killed by two identified men in British Columbia in June. Trudeau, earlier this month, told Canadian Parliament that his government had "credible allegations" that Indian government agents may be linked to the killing, prompting an angry reaction from the New Delhi, which dismissed Ottawa's allegation as absurd. Have consistently engaged with India over murder row: US Amid the standoff between India and Canada over the murder of Nijjar, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Thursday that Washington consistently engaged with New Delhi on this question and has urged them to cooperate. #WATCH | On the India-Canada row, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller says, "One of the practices I'm going to continue to try to adhere to, is to not speak publicly about what, Secretary Blinken or other representative of this department will say in their meetings… pic.twitter.com/CbYitCmLqS — ANI (@ANI) September 28, 2023 × "And that engagement and the urge for them to cooperate will continue," Miller told reporters. Blinken supports 'peaceful resolution' after ECOWAS forces decision in Niger

According to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken speaking to the BBC, the Russian Wagner mercenary outfit is "taking advantage" of the unrest in Niger. A junta has been in charge of the nation since President Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown over two weeks ago.

Antony Blinken: Wagner is taking advantage on instability in Niger

<p>US State Secretary Antony Blinken has claimed that Russian mercenary group Wagner is “taking advantage” of instability that has risen out of the coup in Niger.</p>

<p>There have been several media reports and also claims from ousted President Mohamed Bazoum that the military junta is being supported by the Wagner group.</p>

<p>Speaking to BBC on Tuesday (Aug 8), Blinken said he believes that the coup did not take place at the behest of either Russia or Wagner.</p>

<p>"I think what happened, and what continues to happen in Niger was not instigated by Russia or by Wagner, but... they tried to take advantage of it. Every single place that this Wagner group has gone, death, destruction and exploitation have followed," Blinken was quoted as saying. He added, “Insecurity has gone up, not down.”</p>

<p>It is estimated that around 5,000 Wagner troops are stationed across Africa. In 2021, they were deployed to neighbouring Mali following the breakdown of diplomatic talks with France.</p>

<p>The group's fighters have been accused of widespread human rights abuses in several African countries.</p>

<p>Notably, Blinken also spoke to Nigerien President Bazoum and took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to give an update.</p>

<p>"Spoke to Nigerien President Bazoum to express our continued efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the current constitutional crisis. The United States reiterates our call for the immediate release of him and his family," wrote Blinken.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Despite this, there have been reports claiming that Niger's army has asked Wagner for assistance as the country faces the possibility of military intervention.</p>

<p>Bazoum, who is currently being detained, also expressed his concerns about Wagner's presence in Africa while writing an opinion piece for Washington Post last week.</p>

<p>"With an open invitation from the coup plotters and their regional allies, the entire central Sahel region could fall to Russian influence via the Wagner Group, whose brutal terrorism has been on full display in Ukraine," he wrote.</p>

<p>"We are always on the side of the good, on the side of justice, and on the side of those who fight for their sovereignty and for the rights of their people," he said.</p>

<h2><strong>Fresh sanctions on Niger</strong></h2>

<p>Meanwhile, the West African country continues to be slapped with sanctions following efforts to restore constitutional order in the aftermath of the July 26 coup.</p>

<p>On Tuesday, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu ordered the new sanctions through Nigeria's central bank, aimed at squeezing those involved in the takeover, a presidential spokesperson said.</p>

<p>The sanctions were imposed after the junta denied a joint delegation from West African states, the African Union (AU) and the United Nations permission to enter Niger, resisting pressure from the United States and the UN to come to the negotiating table.</p>

US State Secretary Antony Blinken has claimed that Russian mercenary group Wagner is “taking advantage” of instability that has risen out of the coup in Niger. There have been several media reports and also claims from ousted President Mohamed Bazoum that the military junta is being supported by the Wagner group. Speaking to BBC on Tuesday (Aug 8), Blinken said he believes that the coup did not take place at the behest of either Russia or Wagner. "I think what happened, and what continues to happen in Niger was not instigated by Russia or by Wagner, but... they tried to take advantage of it. Every single place that this Wagner group has gone, death, destruction and exploitation have followed," Blinken was quoted as saying. He added, “Insecurity has gone up, not down.” It is estimated that around 5,000 Wagner troops are stationed across Africa. In 2021, they were deployed to neighbouring Mali following the breakdown of diplomatic talks with France. The group's fighters have been accused of widespread human rights abuses in several African countries. Notably, Blinken also spoke to Nigerien President Bazoum and took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to give an update. "Spoke to Nigerien President Bazoum to express our continued efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the current constitutional crisis. The United States reiterates our call for the immediate release of him and his family," wrote Blinken. Bazoum, who is currently being detained, also expressed his concerns about Wagner's presence in Africa while writing an opinion piece for Washington Post last week. "With an open invitation from the coup plotters and their regional allies, the entire central Sahel region could fall to Russian influence via the Wagner Group, whose brutal terrorism has been on full display in Ukraine," he wrote. On Tuesday, Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin asked the coup leaders to "give us a call" in a voice message uploaded to Telegram, reports BBC.
