Mumbai Indians batter Romario Shepherd went ballistic in the 20th over of the innings against Delhi Capitals, scoring 32 runs as Anrich Nortje was taken to the cleaners.

Nortje, entrusted with closing out the innings dished some looseners and the West Indian batter took full advantage of it. Shepherd smashed two fours and four maximums to power MI to 234 for five in the stipulated 20 overs.&nbsp;

The South African pacer has had a horrid time in the field ever since making a comeback after injury and Sunday (Apr 7) afternoon was no different.&nbsp;Nortje's 2/65 was the most expensive spell of the 2024 season and the joint-most expensive spell bowled by a Dehli bowler, equalling the unfortunate record set by Umesh Yadav in 2023.&nbsp;

Despite getting a fiery start to the innings, courtesy of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan, MI lost their way in the middle overs as skipper Hardik Pandya played a laborious innings to kill the momentum. However, in the last 12 deliveries&nbsp;Shepherd and Tim David managed to score 51 runs and guided MI to an above-par total.&nbsp;

The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will get underway in less than 10 days, with Delhi Capitals still seeking clearance on seamer Anrich Nortje, who has resumed bowling in competitive cricket for the first time since September last year. Though his return to action will boost the side's morale, the reality surrounding his workload still looms.

Nortje last played an international game on September 9, 2023, against Australia, bowling just five overs before pulling out with a lumber stress fracture, which kept him out of the 50-over World Cup, the Test series at home against India and the second edition of the SA20 since.&nbsp;

However, the pacer returned to action for the Warriors in a CSA T20 Challenge match against the Tuskers at St George's Park, wherein he conceded 12 runs without picking a wicket. Although he likes bowling with the new ball up front, Nortje bowled the second, sixth, ninth and 15th over in his comeback game.

Speaking with Cricbuzz, Warriors coach Robin Peterson said,&nbsp;"He came through well. His pace was up; he's as quick as I've seen him. He looks happy with his body. Now his target is playing back-to-back competitive games."

While Nortje missed a few games after that for personal reasons, he will return to play the home game against Boland on Sunday.

Nortje is among those super-fast pacers who have clocked three of the ten quickest balls bowled in the history of IPL, with him searing over 150 Kmph regularly.&nbsp;

However, Peterson backs Nortje to be mentally ready for the action-packed summer, including the T20 World Cup (in June in the Caribbean and the USA).&nbsp;

"There's always that element of getting confident in the machine again," Peterson said.&nbsp;

"But Anrich is incredibly professional. He's had injuries before, so he's got some sort of formula on how to recover and what to do. The more I watch him bowl, the more he seems fine. He looks fit and healthy. He looks happy."

What was his mental state? "He's rock solid," Peterson said. "He's got no issues. Anrich is a low-maintenance cricketer. He does his work and gets on with it,” the coach added.&nbsp;

CWC 2023: Big blow to South Africa! Nortje, Magala ruled out due to injuries, replacements named

South African seamers Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala will undergo fitness tests later this week, determining their participation in the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2023. Both were included in the provisional 15-man squad for the showpiece event in India, starting October 5, but played just one match each in the recently concluded Australia series. With the pace being South Africa’s go-to-weapon in CWC, as also echoed by Kagiso Rabada during an exclusive chat with WION, the absence of these two&nbsp;will hurt Proteas' chances of hitting the bulls’ eye this time.

While express pace Nortje has suffered a lower back injury, medium pacer Magala is nursing issues in his left knee.

Considering the deadline date for all teams to name their final 15 is September 28 – a day before the start of the CWC warm-up matches, the selectors will have around a week to take a call on the bowling duo.

Even though South Africa came from behind to beat Australia across five ODIs, winning it 3-2, Proteas’ white-ball coach, Rob Walter, admitted they would have liked both to have some game time in the lead-up to the World Cup.

But since they remained out of contention for selection due to injuries, the chances of them missing the flight to India are increasing, leaving the South African camp worried.

“We are continually taking stock as to where both of those players are,” South Africa’s white-ball coach Rob Walter said.

“The fact that they weren’t playing today with a week to go before we board the plane for the World Cup is obviously a cause for concern. We would have wanted them out there. There are complications around taking players that are injured into a World Cup because then you have to provide a medical reason to be swapped out,” Walter added.

<h2>Selectors ready with backups</h2>

During the fifth and final ODI in Johannesburg, all-rounders Andile Phehlukwayo and Marco Jansen starred with the bat, hitting 39 and 47, respectively, though Jansen returned with five wickets. A controversy erupted on the opening day of the third and final Test between Australia and South Africa, at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Sydney. While the umpire Paul&nbsp;Reiffel sent the decision to the third umpire, his soft signal was out. After a lot of replays from the third umpire,&nbsp;Richard Kettleborough, from different angles, the decision was overruled with Labuschagne surviving eventually.&nbsp;

The Dean Elgar-led South African side had started celebrating before the decision went upstairs and were shellshocked by the final call. While it looked like Hammer had done enough to catch the ball, some angles suggested that some part of the ball was touching the ground. Even former SA captain Faf du Plessis felt that the final decision should've gone in favour of the bowling side as the soft signal was out.

A controversy erupted on the opening day of the third and final Test between Australia and South Africa, at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Sydney. After opting to bat first, Australia was going strong at 130 for 1, in the second session, when Marnus Labuschagne (batting on 70) edged one, off Marco Jansen, and the ball went to the slip cordon with Simon Harmer holding onto a low catch. While the umpire Paul Reiffel sent the decision to the third umpire, his soft signal was out. After a lot of replays from the third umpire, Richard Kettleborough, from different angles, the decision was overruled with Labuschagne surviving eventually. The Dean Elgar-led South African side had started celebrating before the decision went upstairs and were shellshocked by the final call. While it looked like Hammer had done enough to catch the ball, some angles suggested that some part of the ball was touching the ground. He said, "All of us thought it was out so I’m annoyed. I’m convinced it went straight in (to Harmer’s hands). I think when you look at the angles, to us, it looks like his fingers are underneath it. Unfortunately, we didn’t get that one and I think it would have been a big one at that stage." Many other cricketers joined in and shared their take with regard to the controversial catch. England's Test captain Ben Stokes tweeted, "ICC should get rid of the soft signal and let the 3rd umpire who has all the technology to make the decision when the on-field umpires send it upstairs, all the controversy is always around the soft signal given." India's former spinner Harbhajan Singh replied saying, "Absolutely waste of time (soft signals)what is the point giving a soft signal when you are referring it to the 3rd umpire anyways .. let the 3rd umpire give a decision." Even former SA captain Faf du Plessis felt that the final decision should've gone in favour of the bowling side as the soft signal was out. The batter also opened up on the catch and said, "Regardless of whether it's caught or not, with technology, there are so many ones that people are adamant they have caught - and Simon said 'I've caught that' - and in the old rules of catching it, because you felt like your fingers are under it, absolutely, but with the new footage those are so scrutinised because you see so many angles.
