After the riveting three Tests, India and South Africa will square off with each other in the three-match ODI series opener at Boland Park, Paarl on Wednesday (January 19). Team India will play their first-ever series in the 50-over format since July 2021 and following Rahul Dravid's appointment as the head coach.

In 2021, India played two bilateral ODI series, versus England and Sri Lanka respectively. India ended the year winning four games and losing two. Since then, a lot has changed in Indian cricket. Virat Kohli was sacked as the ODI captain, having resigned on his own as T20I and Test captain (recently on January 15). Rohit Sharma was named the limited-overs captain in early December 2021, before being ruled out of the upcoming ODIs due to hamstring injury.

Thus, the 29-year-old KL Rahul will take the charge of the side in the SA ODIs in Rohit's absence. Rahul has already led India in the ongoing tour, during the second and penultimate Test at The Wanderers, Johannesburg. It will be interesting to see how he guides the side with veterans such as Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, R Ashwin, etc.

Since July 2021, Dravid has already worked with several captains -- in the form of Dhawan, Rohit, Ajinkya Rahane, Kohli and Rahul. Thus, the national side will be eager to gel well and start the series with a bang after losing the Tests 2-1. The young guns such as Venkatesh Iyer, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Md Siraj, Rishabh Pant, etc. will be desperate to make the most of their chances.

On the other hand, Bavuma-led SA aren't pushovers by any means. The likes of Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, Lungi Ngidi, etc. will be bolstered by the presence of white-ball specialists David Miller, Andile Pheklukwayo, Tabraiz Shamsi.

Match prediction for India-South Africa encounter: There's not much separating both sides. Expect big runs with small boundaries -- on a pitch known to be slow and flat -- if the weather doesn't play a big role. SA's practice session was abandoned on Tuesday (January 18) due to rain interruption. Thus, the weather can make its presence felt.

Given how much India enjoy playing this format and are well in sync with it, expect the visitors to go 1-0 up. Nonetheless, it will be a close contest.

IND vs SA, 1st ODI prediction: Who will win series opener between KL Rahul-led India and South Africa?

Fast bowler Duanne Olivier is likely to return to South Africa's line-up when the host team faces visitors India in the opening of a three-match Test series at Centurion Park beginning on Sunday in the second cycle of the ICC World Test Championship.

Olivier will reinforce a home seam attack that is missing injured Anrich Nortje and will play his first Test since 2019, after he chose county cricket in England over South Africa, despite substantial success in the five-day format.

Olivier stormed into the Test scene four years ago, taking 48 wickets in 10 Tests at an average of less than 20, but then signed a Kolpak deal with English county Yorkshire, thereby halting his South African cricket career.

The series is set to be a war of pace attacks on lively wickets, particularly in the first two tests on the Highveld, and Olivier's comeback is therefore apt.

After coming home when the Kolpak system was dismantled as a result of the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union, Olivier displayed exceptional form and finished the local four-day championship as the leading wicket-taker.

"I want our best opportunity to win matches and series, and in order for that to happen, you need to make tough calls, for instance bringing people back," South Africa captain Dean Elgar told reporters when asked if Olivier should be allowed to return.

"I was very keen to have him back, I’m happy and excited knowing what he can do on the field. There's no bad feelings about what's happened in the past."

South Africa has often relied on fast bowlers on hot home pitches to win, but they are also aware that India has built a powerful pace attack that has earned them international success in recent years.

"India has been an immensely improved bowling lineup, especially playing away from home. We`re very mindful of what we`re going to be up against," Elgar said.

India have maintained a low profile in their bio-secure bubble in Johannesburg since their arrival, but batsman Cheteshwar Pujara feels this is their greatest opportunity ever to win a Test series in South Africa.

"Our fast bowlers have been the difference between the sides overall when we have played abroad. If you look at the Australia and England series, we have done exceptionally well as a bowling unit," Pujara stated on the website of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

"Our fast bowlers are our strength (in South Africa) and I hope they can utilise the conditions and give us 20 wickets in each test match."

India just concluded a home series triumph over New Zealand, while South Africa has not played Test cricket since a series victory in the West Indies in June.

South African captain Dean Elgar rejoices after Duanne Olivier replaces Anrich Nortje for India Tests

South Africa have been handed a massive blow ahead of the three-match Test series against India at home. Proteas fast bowler Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the Test series owing to a persistent injury. The two sides are all set to lock horns in the series-opener of the three-match rubber from Sunday (December 26) at the SuperSport Park in Centurion.

Cricket South Africa on Tuesday confirmed that Nortje has failed to recover fully ahead of the start of the Test series and will not be taking part in the three-match rubber. His absence will be a huge blow for the hosts against a strong Indian side as Nortje was on top-notch form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 and the T20 World Cup 2021.

He has been one of the best fast bowlers for his country across formats over the last couple of years and was expected to continue his stellar run in the India Test series. In his absence, Kagiso Rabada will spearhead South Africa's pace attack also consisting of the likes of Lungi Ngidi and Duanne Olivier among others.

"He has unfortunately not recovered adequately for the expected Test match bowling loads and is currently consulting with specialists to manage and advise on his recovery. No replacement will be brought in," CSA said in a statement.

South Africa have been training ahead of the start of the three-match series and the Indian team also has hit the ground running in Centurion. The Indian players were spotted enjoying a quality practice session at the SuperSport Park on Monday under the watchful eyes of head coach Rahul Dravid.

India tour of SA: Quinton de Kock, Rabada, pacer Anrich Nortje named in Proteas Test squad

Over the years, the Delhi Capitals (DC) have become one of the most consistent sides in IPL history. While the IPL 2020 runners-up would've been eager to retain their core players, the Delhi franchise has gone ahead with four retained players. They are Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Prithvi Shaw and Anrich Nortje.

Hence, some big names have been left out of the DC franchise such as Marcus Stoinis, R Ashwin, Avesh Khan, Shikhar Dhawan and their former captain Shreyas Iyer.

DC co-owner Parth Jindal told the broadcasters after announcing the list, "It was heartbreaking. Absolutely heartbroken having to lose Shreyas Iyer, Kagiso Rabada, Shikhar Dhawan, R Ashwin. It is just unfair that you build up a team, give chance to youngsters, groom them but then you lose them after three years. I think IPL needs to look after it. But it is what it is. We are going to try and bring as many of the DC players back in the auction as we can."

For the unversed, DC have a total of 47.5 crores (475 million) in their purse heading into the IPL 2022 auction. Meanwhile, South Africa's speedster and DC's vital cog Nortje also reacted after being retained. "Really excited to be retained. Can't wait for 2022 to start. So far it has been an unbelievable experience so far and looking forward," said Nortje.

As per a report by ESPNcricinfo, DC will let go of one of their star players — Shreyas Iyer, who apparently wants to be the captain but the Delhi-based team has backed wicket-keeper-batter Rishabh Pant for the post. Iyer can still be bought by the two new franchises.

Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje picked three wickets each as South Africa defeated Bangladesh by six wickets in their Super 12 match of the ongoing T20 World Cup on Tuesday.

South Africa limited Bangladesh to 84/10 and then chased down the target in 13.3 overs on the back of a decent batting performance here at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

South Africa have now won three games in a row and are favourites for the semi-final berth. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are now out of the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Chasing 85, South Africa suffered an early blow as Taskin Ahmed got Reeza Hendricks lbw in the first over. Minutes later Quinton de Kock departed leaving South Africa on 28/2. With Aiden Markram scoring a duck, South Africa suffered another blow as they scored 33/3 in the first six overs.

However, the score was so low that it allowed Rassie van der Dussen and skipper Temba Bavuma to get their feet in. The duo stitched a 47-run stand to steer the South Africa chase as the Proteas wrapped an easy win in the end.

Earlier put into bat first, Bangladesh were bowled out for 84 runs in the 19th over following a spectacular performance from South Africa bowlers. Bangladesh had got off to a decent start but Rabada and Nortje wreaked havoc to dismantle the batting lineup as the side lost five wickets in nine overs for 34 runs.

Mahedi Hasan scored 27, the highest for Bangladesh on Tuesday as the side reached 84 in the next 10 overs.

Brief Scores: Bangladesh 84/10 (Mahedi Hasan 27; Rabada 3-20, Nortje 3-8) vs South Africa 86/4 (Temba Bavuma 31; Taskin Ahmed 2-18).

Umran Malik to Anrich Nortje: Top 5 fastest bowlers in IPL 2021 so far

Delhi Capitals bowlers made up for the team's underwhelming display with the bat to hand Rajasthan Royals a 33-run defeat in their Indian Premier League match, here on Saturday. The Capitals bowling unit restricted the Royals to 121 for six after the team put on board 154 for six on the back of Shreyas Iyer's 43 and a late flourish provided by Shimron Hetmyer, who scored 28 runs off 16 balls.

Rajasthan skipper Sanju Samson looked in sublime touch, scoring an unbeaten 70, but with wickets tumbling at regular intervals from the other end, the Royals innings failed to get the momentum it needed. South African pacer Anrich Nortje (2/18) led the Delhi bowlers who performed as a cohesive unit.

Avesh Khan (1/29), Kagiso Rabada (1/26), Axar Patel (1/27), Ravichandran Ashwin (1/20) snapped a wicket each. With the win, the Capitals returned to the top of the table while the Royals moved down to the sixth spot. Defending a modest total, pacers Khan and Nortje provided the electric start that the Capitals needed, sending back both openers -- Liam Livingstone (1) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (5) in the first two overs.

Skipper Rishabh Pant made a bowling change by bringing in Ashwin and the senior Indian spinner got rid of the dangerous David Miller (7) to leave the Royals tottering at 17 for 3. With the required run rate increasing, Rajasthan needed 107 runs in the last 10 over.

Samson and young Mahipal Lomror (19) seemed to be reviving the innings but the ever-reliant Rabada nipped the partnership in the bud. Riyan Parag (2) and Rahul Tewatia (9) couldn't provide a valuable contribution either. Samson was going strong, hitting boundaries at will but the Delhi bowlers came back strongly.

Earlier, the Royals pacers -- led by Mustafizur Rahman (2/22), Chetan Sakariya (2/33) and Kartik Tyagi (1/40) -- shared five wickets while spin all-rounder Rahul Tewatia (1/17) dismissed one batsman. Tyagi, the star of the match against Punjab Kings, drew first blood with his very first delivery in the fourth over, cleaning up Orange Cap holder Shikhar Dhawan (8).

The Delhi opener looked to play a good length delivery but the ball rolled back to hit the timber. Prithvi Shaw (10) soon followed his opening partner back to the dugout, slicing the ball off Sakariya to Liam Livingstone at mid-off. At the end of the powerplay, the Capitals were precariously placed at 36 runs for the loss of two wickets.

With spin introduced in the seventh over Shreyas Iyer (43 off 32 balls) and skipper Rishabh Pant (24 off 24 balls) started to repair the damage caused by the loss of the openers.

The duo, who stitched a 62-run partnership, kept the scoreboard ticking, while also hitting the occasional boundaries at the huge Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

The stylish Iyer then hit the first maximum of the match over long-off in the 10th over off left-arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi (0/34). As the two Delhi batters found their footing, Rahman was brought back into the attack and the move immediately paid dividends as Pant, looking to hook the ball away, ended up getting an under edge.

Samson then showed his skills with gloves to stump Iyer, who failed to stretch his back foot inside the crease as wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals. Shimron Hetmyer, who was striking the ball well, then upped the ante, hitting three boundaries off Tyagi to plunder 16 runs in the 16th over. The big-hitting West Indian, who hit five fours, scored a brisk 28 off 16 balls.

Pacer Anrich Nortje said he wants to "implement" last year's IPL performance in the second leg of IPL 2021 as Delhi Capitals look forward to winning their maiden title in UAE, as DC set to take on the Sunrisers Hyderabad on September 22 when the season resumes.

In 2020, Nortje picked 22 wickets in 16 matches in his first-ever IPL season. He was a vital cog in the team and played an important role as DC reached its maiden IPL final, where it came second-best against Mumbai Indians here last year.

In a statement released by DC, the South African bowler said, "It was here where things started to happen for me in the IPL, but I am looking to take it match by match this season. There's a lot coming up, even after the IPL."

"We have to try and remember what we did here the last time we were here and try and implement that again. Hopefully, we can repeat what we did in the UAE the last time we were here," said the 27-year-old.

"There's no rocket-science behind it. It's all about hitting the right length and keeping it simple. I think the pace is something you build when you are in the right rhythm. When you're managing to get all your basics right, the pace is generated. Be it your run up, or your delivery stride and even your release, I think it's a combination of all those things and I'm happy to have been able to bowl fast on a consistent basis. More importantly, I have also hit the right areas. I also believe in order to get the desired results, you need to have proper planning before executing anything and should not shift your focus, whatever the conditions are," the South African player said.

Nortje had a string of injuries last year which forced him out of IPL 2019 as well as the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. The South African was picked up by KKR last year but was ruled out of the tournament after he suffered a shoulder injury which required surgery.

"It was very unfortunate that I missed out on my debut IPL season. But injuries are part and parcel of the sport. I was more focused on making a comeback as soon as possible. However, there were setbacks which also jolted my chances of making it to the World Cup squad. It was a little tough and challenging for me at that moment. However, I did not panic. I was just focusing on recovering and made sure I did it right. When you have such injuries, as a fast bowler, it's always good to give it time and not rush into coming back," Nortje said.
