The grandeur and the visual extravaganza on any Sanjay Leela Bhansali film are the usual tropes. His latest 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' featuring the incredibly Alia Bhatt is no different. Visual opulence, stunning sets make the film a quintessential Bhansali big-budget blockbuster but 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' scores over and above the obvious- for its performances, for a distinctly feminist voice, for re-telling a story about a section that is always overlooked in Indian society.

Based on chapters from the book ‘Mafia Queens Of Mumbai’ by Hussain Zaidi, 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' is set in the early 1950s and spans over 15 years nearly and showcases the journey of a girl called Ganga who came to Mumbai to become a heroine, was sold off to a brothel by her lover and eventually made Kamathipura- Mumbai's famous red-light district, her home and its people her family.

Bhatt plays the young vulnerable, starry-eyed Ganga, who decides to elope one day with the man who she thinks loves her and has promised her the stars. On her arrival to Bombay, she is taken to a brothel, sold off and kept captive for two days without any water or food. Guilty of running away from home without informing her parents, ashamed of the place she is has been sold to, Ganga decides to stay back and make prostitution her profession. Over some time, Ganga becomes Gangu, a name to reckon with in the area, who knows her worth and fights for the rights of her people.

A terrible encounter with a client makes Gangu go to the local ganglord Rahim Lala (Ajay Devgn) for justice. Impressed by her honesty, the two strike an uncanny friendship, helping Gangu gain prominence in the area, win local elections and become the voice of the people there.

Fuelled by theatrics, stunning camera work and detailed screenplay, 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' is an engrossing
film. The plot may be known but the performances, led by Alia Bhatt keep the viewers hooked through its nearly three hours runtime.

The past three releases of Bhansali's have been centred around love and emotions around it. All featured Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in the lead playing historical characters. With 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' Bhansali shifts focus to Mumbai or Bombay in the 1940s-50s and tells the story of an uncanny hero- a mafia queen which is so refreshing from his past releases.

Bhansali and co-writer Utkarshini Vashishtha give the story a distinct, strong female voice. Gangu is not ashamed of her past, she is not apologetic of her background and knows her rights too well. She is ahead of her time, knows the power a woman holds in her lifetime and only has the men in her life to help her causes. A scene, that is also part of the trailer, has Gangu taking a few young girls- kids of the brothel- to the nearby school for admission. She offers her name as mother's name and when probed to reveal the father's name, nonchalantly declares 'Dev Anand' highlighting the patriarchy that is imbibed in the system. Then a scene where she delivers a long lecture at Azad Maidaan- she uses humour and facts to highlight the importance of prostitutes in society. In another scene, she reasons with the women why do men have so much arrogance when women are the ones who handle everything.

Alia is the star of Bhansali's story. She is equal parts vulnerable, equal parts feisty. She exudes power, charm and charisma as Gangubai Kathiawadi and beautifully shows the journey of a young, naive girl making her living in the red light district and eventually becoming a force to reckon with. Many had doubted her casting when the film was initially announced and felt she was too young to play the Mafia queen. But Alia brings in so much gravitas to her character that it is hard to look at anyone else in the film when Alia is around. This is in a film that boasts of great performances by almost every single actor- the screentime notwithstanding.

The men in the film are all enablers to Gangu's rise and evolution to a godly woman. There is Ajay Devgn, playing the silent, just Mafia lord who helps Gangu gain prominence in her area. TV actor Shantanu Maheshwari makes an impressive debut as Afsan, the man who falls head over heels for Gangu, never crosses the line and gains respect and affection from her in return. Bhatt and Maheshwari's scenes are all about first love and the two beautifully perform to it. Vijay Raaz plays a eunuch with so grace and dignity and is the person who makes Gangu aspire for a political career. Then there Jim Sarbh, who plays a journalist who helps Gangu become a national sensation. The actors fit their role well and deliver to their script, never overstepping Bhatt - who is truly the hero of the film.

The songs have the Bhansali trademark. Slow soulful numbers- mostly picturised when Bhatt is seen romancing Maheshwari. The fast numbers are traditional Garba numbers- which may remind you of songs of 'Goliyon Ki Rasleela'.

Cinematographer Sudeep Chatterjee- a frequent collaborator with Bhansali- makes the film visually so rich. Scenes where the girls get dressed sitting on a bench minutes before they head out to attract possible customers seem like paintings. Chatterjee's frames enhance Bhansali's signature style but are never too opulent because that's not what the script demands.

'Gangubai Kathiawadi' review: Alia Bhatt is a scene-stealer in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's visual drama

'Gangubai Kathiawadi' made its way to theatres today with Alia Bhatt starring in and as Gangubai who starts off her journey being sold into prostitution and rises to power with her incredible grit and resilience in a society that had not heard words like feminism.

With an excellent start at the box office, Alia Bhatt spoke to WION candidly about her love for social media, how she disassociates from on-screen characters and why she donned all-white for promotions of the film that is now being hailed as one of her finest performances to date.

Excited for reactions to her film, Alia Bhatt looked ethereal in yet another white ensemble as she got talking to us when she explained that “white is a colour I love and yes, Gangubai is white (put plainly).” “She wears a lot of white and the reason you'll understand when you watch the film. I wanted this colour to become synonymous with Gangubai,” said the actor as she fondly played with her net dupatta that she paired elegantly with her anarkali suit.

While Gangubai is “white” according to Alia who brings to life the character we have only heard of until now, those who’ve seen the film would agree that it has multiple layers. “I wanted to work with sir (Sanjay Leela Bhansali). The part was amazing, the performance scope was amazing, and the script was amazing. It was scary but amazing,” explained Alia as she plays a powerful brothel madame who fights for women’s rights and advocates equal rights for sex workers in the movie.

As for what prompted her to take it, the actress said that there wasn’t ever one thing that led her to the part. “For me and for actors in general, it’s pretty instinctive. It’s a feeling,” she said.

She shot for Gangubai Kathiawadi for a long time and the character stayed with her for quite some time since she didn’t have any other project she was working on at the time. So did it become difficult to disassociate from Gangu for Alia? She answered, “I think it takes its natural course, disassociating from the character. It usually happens if you move on to another character or the film releases, so you get a bit of a break but this film has been particularly long because the final rollout didn’t happen immediately. The character will always be with me but once it becomes the audience's film, it changes, it’s not yours anymore.”

Exclusive! Alia Bhatt: I love memes. Trolls I have no interest in

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's big release 'Ganguabai Kathiawadi' hits cinemas across the country on February 25. It is the second big Bollywood release post 'Badhai Do' to hit cinemas and expectations are very high from the film considering it is Alia Bhatt's big release after years as well as Bhansali's first release post 'Padmaavat' which was released in 2018.

Trade experts analyse how big the film will be at the box office.

Taran Adarsh (trade analyst, movie critic): “I am very, very optimistic when it comes to 'Gangubai Kathiawadi'. Main reason: it's an SLB film. An SLB film is special, in my opinion, he is the best storyteller in India along with SS Rajamouli. The art of combining story and breathtaking visuals is a rarity and SLB scores brownie points for it.Also, the subject he chooses in film after film is genuinely out of the box. 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' is one story I am extremely keen to watch on celluloid. Also, he has cast Alia Bhatt in a role of a lifetime and I am sure, her performance will stand out in her repertoire.I am very confident, SLB will bring back the audience in large numbers. He has always done it in the past. Will happen again. The success of Sooryavanshi, Pushpa and Spiderman have proved, yet again, that moviegoers want wholesome entertainment. Gangubai Kathiawadi should emerge a success story too. Fingers crossed.”

Bollywood films & their love for real life gangsters: Gangubai Kathiawadi to Haseena Parkar

Akshay Rathi(movie exhibitor): “I think the biggest USP of 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' is the manwho has made the film, Mr Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his brilliant cinematic vision. This is the man who thinks ‘epic’ in every sense: we have seen that in pretty much all his films. When you go back to his 'Hum…Dil De Chuke Sanam', 'Devdas' and his more recent film like 'Bajirao Mastani' and 'Padmavat' we are talking about a cinema that is crafted for movie theatres. Who better equipped to bring back the audience into theatres with 'Gangubai Kathiawadi'? Mr Bhansali sleeps, dreams, breathes epic cinema.”

Atul Mohan(trade analyst): “Alia Bhatt is among one of the most bankable female stars today and Sanjay Leela Bhansali is one of the finest storytellers we have. The way Bhansali presents his heroines , nobody else does. This combination of Alia and SLB looks very lethal and we have Ajay Devgn also in the film. Combine all these brands and it looks like a perfect film to bring back the audience to the cinemas. We need one big film every month to work for the trade. We saw that in 'Sooryavanshi', 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' and 'Pushpa' last year after business resumed and Gangubai has to retain that flow of success at the BO. The rest depends on audience's verdict.”

Girish Johar(trade analyst, producer): “'Gangubai Kathiawadi' is definitely a big film coming from the stalwarts’ team of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Ajay Devgn and powerhouse performer, Alia Bhatt. It’s one of the prestigious films of the year and has generated tremendous expectations. The respective fans of SLB, Devgan and Alia are eagerly awaiting and cinema lovers are also keen to watch this spectacle on the big screen. The film has been mounted on a big scale and is expected to have a good start at the box office. The film is surely to bring relief to the exhibition fraternity and definitely has the power to bring audiences back to the cinemas. Promotions of the film have to start, which will surely add to the excitement and will be talk of the town, in times to come. Really hope that the film is received well at the BO and it provides the much needed impetus to film industry.”

Roshan Singh(film exhibitor Bihar): “I am a hundred percent confident that Gangubai Kathiawadi would the biggest hit of the the past two years, bigger than Pushpa. I remember Mr Bhansali’s 'Hum…Dil De Chuke Sanam', 'Devdas' and Black were all released in my theatre. They were all huge hits, specially Devdas which ran for 25 weeks in my theatre. People just kept coming back over and over again to see it, to hear the dialogues to watch the songs. I am confident history will repeat itself with 'Gangubai Kaithiawadi'.”

Fingers crossed.” Bollywood films & their love for real life gangsters: Gangubai Kathiawadi to Haseena Parkar Akshay Rathi(movie exhibitor): “I think the biggest USP of 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' is the manwho has made the film, Mr Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his brilliant cinematic vision. Mr Bhansali sleeps, dreams, breathes epic cinema.” Atul Mohan(trade analyst): “Alia Bhatt is among one of the most bankable female stars today and Sanjay Leela Bhansali is one of the finest storytellers we have. The rest depends on audience's verdict.” Gangubai Kathiawadi' review: Alia Bhatt is a scene-stealer in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's visual drama Girish Johar(trade analyst, producer): “'Gangubai Kathiawadi' is definitely a big film coming from the stalwarts’ team of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Ajay Devgn and powerhouse performer, Alia Bhatt. Really hope that the film is received well at the BO and it provides the much needed impetus to film industry.” Roshan Singh(film exhibitor Bihar): “I am a hundred percent confident that Gangubai Kathiawadi would the biggest hit of the the past two years, bigger than Pushpa. I am confident history will repeat itself with 'Gangubai Kaithiawadi'.” WATCH: Exclusive Interview with 'Gangubai' Alia Bhatt

How big will 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' be at the box office? Trade experts analyze

Birthday Special: From 'Khamoshi' to 'Gangubai Kathiawadi', revisiting Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s films

It is amusing and a tad annoying to hear the expert opinions of those who have not seen 'Gangubai Kathiawadi'. Many feel Alia is too “upper-class” to play a sex worker from Kamathipura.

Many felt the same when Sharmila Tagore was signed to play a hardcore sex worker in Gulzar’s 'Mausam'. Gulzar Saab was advised by his well-wishers to drop the idea of Sharmila as a streetwalker before it was too late, as Ms Tagore was seen to be too sophisticated for the part.

But the filmmaker stuck to his guns. And Sharmila Tagore won her one and only National award for best actress in 'Mausam'.

“It wasn’t easy,” Sharmila Tagore shared with me. “To say those abusive words. I had never heard them, let alone used them. But when you have a good director and a supportive co-star the atmosphere is so relaxed that you surrender comfortably to the demands of the character.”

I have a feeling 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' will fetch Alia her first National award for best actress. Not that she’s a stranger to outstanding performances. She was in sterling form in Imtiaz Ali’s Highway, Abhishek Choubey’s 'Udta Punjab' and Zoya Akhtar’s 'Gully Boy'.

None of these compares with what Alia has achieved in 'Gangubai Kathiawadi'. It’s a transformative performance where we no longer see the actress but only the character. Alia’s voice, body language and mannerisms are completely new to her. She pulls it off with the panache of a pro.

As she told me excitedly, “You know, I always felt that until one is signed for a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film one has not really arrived. Would you believe I first went to audition for him when I was 9? I had gone to audition for Black and he told my mother, ‘No(to Black), she’s meant to be a star’. I felt I had to prove him right someday. And now for us to be collaborating ….It’s a dream come true.”

Recalling her first meeting with the 'Devdas' director Alia said, "When I walked into his office I felt I had to be part of that world. Alia Bhatt's transformative performance in 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' will change the course of her career

With barely days left for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' to hit theatres, Alia Bhatt who stars as and in Gangubai speaks to WION about reactions to the film at the Berlinale 2022, playing strong women characters on screen and more

Exclusive Interview with 'Gangubai' Alia Bhatt

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has returned from the Berlin Film Festival a very happy man.

He says, “It was memorable in every way possible. I cannot thank the Festival organizers enough for the honour that they gave my film. The Gala premiere was on 16 February. It was a full-moon night. It was also a rain-washed frosty night. The combination of the full moon and the rains were I think godsent. It was His blessing. The 'Devdas' premiere had happened on a no-moon night: it was a lunar eclipse. I always feel the hand of God in my films. At the most expected of times, when life looks unsure, God has brought down the rains. I feel they are a sign for me.”

Bhansali and his team had to follow strict Covid guidelines during the trip to Berlin. But he says the trip was worth all the discomfort. “It is difficult to travel with all the Covid guidelines. But it was all worth it. Yes, that was a great moment. Then of course the Red Carpet. Our 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' was the last film to be shown in the Gala section, so the red-carpet event was quite something. The theatre where our premiere was held was the most spectacular theatre I had ever seen. There were 8,000 seats but we were allowed only 800 seats due to Covid restrictions. It was the most spectacular theatre I’ve ever seen. The screen was bigger than any I’ve seen in my life.”

Laughingly he says he couldn’t resist watching 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' with the Berlin audience. “When the film started I thought I’d stay for a while and then sneak away since I had already seen it 300 times. But I just couldn’t take my eyes off. I am sorry but I was in awe of my own film. The most wonderful thing was that just one hour after they opened the box office all 800 tickets were sold out. It was a spectacular evening for me. The whole chain of events—the full moon night, the rain, the sold-out tickets, ours being the last film of the Gala—all seemed providential. I then came to know that there was an audience waiting to see 'Gangubai Kathiawadi'.”

The Berlin experience has given Bhansali confidence for its Indian release. “Birju Maharaj’s, Lataji’s and my mother’s blessings are with me and my hard work. The audience in Berlin clapped at my song Dholida. They enjoyed the music songs and humour and anger of my film. They clapped for 8 minutes after the film was over. I introduced my film to the audience which I was reluctant to do. Gangubai is a film that resonates in your mind. It is an experience that doesn’t need any explanation or analysis. You watch it. You like it. Or you don’t like it. Period. When I heard that standing ovation in Berlin I got my answer. They actually clapped for 6-7 minutes nonstop. That isn’t a small thing. It made all the pain and effort worth the while: the two lockdowns, the pandemic, the recession."

Within 9 years of her career, Alia Bhatt has come a long way. She is in Berlin at the moment, enjoying every bit of the attention she is getting there for 'Gangubai Kathiawadi'.

This is the third time for Alia at the Berlin Film Festival. She was in Berlin with Imtiaz Ali’s 'Highway' at the beginning of her career in 2014. Then again in 2019 with Zoya Akhtar’s 'Gully Boy', Alia was in Berlin having the time of her life.

She is in the fun mode in Berlin, ready to field questions on her hard-hitting but ebullient film about the rise of a sex worker to the position of power and dominance.

Alia Bhatt makes it to Berlin Film Festival for the third time as 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' premieres

Indian filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali was able to draw on his own childhood memories to make 'Gangubai Kathiawadi', a blockbuster adaptation from the book 'Mafia Queens of Mumbai', about Gangubai, a sex worker turned women's rights champion.

The acclaimed director's first collaboration with celebrated actress Alia Bhatt, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival on Wednesday, chronicles Gangubai's rise from vulnerable sex worker to a powerful figure in the city's red light district.

"I was born and brought up just two lanes away from where she lived, the brothel where she lived, and I spent a lot of time of my childhood passing through those areas," he said. "When I read the book, I was very moved," Bhansali said.

Based on a chapter from S Hussain Zaidi's book, the film was beset with difficulties almost from the start.

"We were hit with the pandemic right in the middle of the shoot," she said. "They had to create like an industrial shed around the set so that it would not get rained out ... the set went through two cyclones."

Bhatt, making her third Berlinale appearance, said her performance was born out of long conversations with Bhansali - who had a very specific vision for which the star had to deepen her voice.

"He wanted me to ... get a base in my voice because I have a bit of a high-pitched tone, especially when I speak with energy and it sounds a bit childish," Bhatt said. "He wanted weight. He wanted intensity."

Bhansali is known for his song and dance sequences but in 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' the filmmaker wanted authenticity and performances that would bring the story forward, said Bhatt adding it made the film stand out from his earlier work.
'Gangubai Kathiawadi' will be released in theatres on February 25.

Mumbai red light area drama 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' shows rise of rights defender in Berlinale premiere

As Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s latest ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ premieres at Berlin Film Festival, the maker sat down to talk about Alia Bhatt’s reaction when she heard the film’s narration for the first time. Alia Bhatt plays Gangubai who rose to power after having started from a humble background.

He said Alia Bhatt ‘ran out of” office after she heard the narration. He told Bhansali Productions CEO Prerna Singh, at the time, that they will have to look for another actor.

Gangubai Kathiawadi is the story of one of the most powerful, loved and respected madams of Mumbai’s red-light area Kamathipura during the 1960s.

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are without a doubt, one of the B-town most-talked-about couples right now, and their marriage is one of the most awaited marriages of Bollywood.

While the couple has always professed their love for each other, fans still are eager to know when they will tie the knot. In 2020, Ranbir talked about his marriage in an interview with Rajeev Masand and said that the deal would’ve been ‘sealed’, but due to the 'pandemic', it was postponed. “I don’t want to jinx it by saying anything. Responding to Ranbir's answer, the 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' actress said: "He is right but, in my head, I am married to Ranbir, in fact, I am married to Ranbir in my head for a long time."
Wait, what? Are Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor already married?

It’s highly unlikely that you haven’t watched the trailer of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ that stars Alia Bhatt as the eponymous character. With fans loving the look and feel of the film as well as Alia and other actors’ acting, there is also a strong buzz for two things that people have pointed out are wrong.

One of them being a racist scene featuring Alia Bhatt. In the trailer, Gangubai goes to visit a dentist. The dentist is played by an actor who looks like he’s from the Northeast India. When the dentist asks Gangubai to open her mouth wider, she tells him, “Pura China muh mein ghusayega?”

Several people on Twitter have called out this dialogue as “racist” and “xenophobic”. Have a look at some of the tweets here:

Also, netizens are unhappy that Vijay Raaz is playing Gangubai’s rival Razia Bai, a transgender character in the film. A few scenes from the movie show Razia trying to intimidate Gangu, telling her to back off from Kamathipura. While fans can’t get over the fact how convincing Vijay looks in all scenes, but they are unhappy that a cisgender man was cast for a transgender role when someone from the community could have got the role and represented better.

'Gangubai Kathiawadi' is a big shame!@aliaa08 @bhansali_produc — Sawang Wangchha (@SawangWangchha) February 4, 2022 × Watch trailer here: One user wrote, “After watching this trailer one thing has been proved that Vijay Raaz is one of the best actors in our times. His entry really gives goosebumps.” Another wrote, “Everyone's acting is brilliant but Vijay Raaz just stands out for me. I mean the way he portrays the character is just brilliant.” This is Vijay Raaz appreciation tweet. What an actor! pic.twitter.com/fvM0udyC5u — PC_unfinished (@PcUnfinished) February 4, 2022 × Gangubai Kathiawadi: Alia Bhatt was not the first choice for the film But one user also wrote, “Can Bollywood stop casting cis/straight people as transsexual characters, please? It's 2022 already and I am pretty sure that there is enough talent in this country where an actual transsexual can portray a transsexual character.” Not them casting vijay raaz as a trans woman in gangubai? Bollywood will u ever learn? — pryanshu // sushi stan account🍣 (@pryanshuuu) February 4, 2022 × Yes, Vijay Raaz nailed #GangubaiKathiawadi trailer. But, it’s sad that Bansali didn’t cast a trans woman for this role. The film industry should stop casting cis actors as trans characters!!!! Will Bollywood ever learn? — BBneutral (@maycenturyormay) February 6, 2022 × ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ is a film set in the 1960s. It will be released in theatres on February 25. Ajay Devgn shares his first look from Alia Bhatt starrer 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' ahead of trailer launch

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' is all set for a February 25 release with the biggest theatrical release since the pandemic set in two years ago. As many as 2,000 prints of the film will be screened in multiplexes and single screens across the country. This is not only the biggest release for Alia Bhatt but also one of the biggest releases ever for a film starring a female hero.

An inside source reveals,“'Gangubai Kathiawadi' is a Sanjay Leela Bhansali creation. He is India’s most venerated director. A film by Bhansali is an event. It happens once in 2-3 years. The co-producer Pen India Ltd feels this film has the potential to do for Hindi cinema what 'Pushpa' has done: break the jinx on theatre releases, bring back audiences in optimum numbers after the pandemic.”

By the director’s own admission, 'Gangubai Kathiawadi', which is his tenth directorial, is his best film to date.

“Bhansali has stepped out of his comfort zone to make a film on crime and punishment which will shock those who expect another costume drama from him and surprise those who think the director is too romantic to visit the rugged hinterland,” says a source from the film’s core team.

The few lucky souls who have seen some rushes of 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' feel Bhansali’s new violent dialect puts him right up there with the celluloid masters of gangsterism. In its seamless verger of crime and drama, 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' is comparable with Nitin Bose’s 'Ganga Jumna' and Yash Chopra’s 'Deewaar'.

Filmmaker SS Rajamouli's new film 'RRR' is one of the most anticipated films of 2022. The director, who made the 'Baahubali' series has mounted this period drama on a large scale and has cast stars from both Telugu as well as Hindi cinema.

Ram Charan and Jr NTR will be seen playing the lead roles but as Rajamouli in a recent interview to a newspaper stated that roles of Ajay Devgn and Aalia Bhatt too are important to the film's plot. Both the Bollywood stars make their debut in Telugu cinema with 'RRR'.

"A role cannot be based on its length. Both Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn's roles are very important. If we look at RRR as a body, then Ajay sir's character in the film is its soul. And we know there are two forces, two powerhouses in the movie, and if there is one person who has to balance them, who has the ability and the strength to contain them, then it is Sita, played by Alia Bhatt," the filmmaker said in a recent interview.

The Baahubali director added, "They are playing cameos in the film, I am not going to cheat the audience about it. In terms of importance, they are equally and sometimes they are more important than the heroes themselves."

'RRR' also features Olivia Morris, Shriya Saran, Samuthirakani, Alison Doody and Ray Stevenson. Set in the 1920's, the film is a 'fictitious story based on two legendary freedom fighters - Alluri Seetharamaraju and Komaram Bheem.'
The film will be released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.
RRR was earlier scheduled to hit screens on October 13 but the pandemic delayed the film's schedule. It will now be releasing in theatres on January 2, 2022.

If after the lavish weddings of 2021-- Varun Dhawan-Natasha Dalal, Rhea Kapoor-Karan Boolani, Yami Gautam-Aditya Dhar, Katrina Kaif-Vicky Kaushal—the audience was in the mood for more weddings in 2022, here is the downer.

There are no major weddings lined up for 2022. And never mind if Malhotra-Advani, Kapoor-Bhatt have zipped off together for a New Years' holiday.

Sources say neither Siddharth Malhotra-Kiara Advani nor Ranbir Kapoor-Alia Bhatt has any weddings plans.

While a filmmaker known to know the entire industry tells me Malhotra and Advani are not even looking in that direction(wedding) in spite of their New Year holiday together, sources close to Alia and Ranbir confirm the couple has no immediate wedding plans.

“Just because Katrina and Vicky Kaushal got married, it doesn’t follow that other high-profile couples will do the same in 2022. Ranbir and Alia are just happy being together. They’ve no wedding plans as such. There are rumours that the couple plans to wed after the release of their film together Brahmastra. There is no connection between the film’s release and the couple’s marriage,” says a friend of Ranbir and Alia.

A director who has worked closely with Alia says she is ready and willing to marry any time. “But Ranbir wants their relationship to go on the way it is."

Berlin Film Festival 2022: Alia Bhatt's 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' heading for a world premiere

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt launched the motion poster of their long-awaited film 'Brahmastra' at a fan event in Delhi on Wednesday evening. While fans were simply excited to watch one of Bollywood's most popular couples share the screen together, Ranbir took the excitement a notch higher as he teased his girlfriend Alia Bhatt on stage about the significance of the letter 'R'.

"What is the meaning of R? What's your connection to the letter?" asked Ranbir tongue firmly in cheek. The question left Alia blushing as fans cheered on.

For those unversed, Alia was asked whether the letter 'R' was lucky for her during the trailer launch event of 'RRR' a few days back. The journalist obviously hinted at her beau Ranbir Kapoor and Alia said, "R is a lovely alphabet but so is A."

On Wednesday as Ranbir asked the same question, Alia blushed and said "R means 8 to me," referring to Ranbir's jersey number. "What does A mean to you," Alia asked in return to which Ranbir said "A stands for Amitabh Bachchan," referring to their co-star in the film.
