Guardiola insists Manchester City ‘will be back’ in title race next season

England right-back <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/kyle-walker">Kyle Walker</a> has completed a loan move to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ac-milan">AC Milan</a> from <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/manchester-city">Manchester City</a>, the clubs announced on Friday. The 34-year-old Walker will join Milan for the remainder of the season in a deal that could become permanent in the summer.<o:p></o:p>
Walker endured a difficult campaign as City captain and had not started a game since their derby loss to Manchester United on December 15.<o:p></o:p>

He ends his long association with City, whom he joined from Tottenham in 2017, after winning six Premier League titles and the 2023 Champions League under Pep Guardiola.<o:p></o:p>
"Manchester City... where do I start? Signing for this incredible club in 2017 was a dream come true," Walker wrote on social media. "Seven years later, winning 17 trophies, including the Champions League and the famous treble is something I could only have dreamt as a child." <o:p></o:p>
Milan are a distant eighth in Serie A but are on course for automatic qualification for the Champions League last 16 after five straight wins in Europe.<o:p></o:p>
In a separate social media post, Walker -- who will be reunited with other England internationals Fikayo Tomori, Tammy Abraham and Ruben Loftus-Cheek at the San Siro -- spoke of his excitement in joining the Italian giants.<o:p></o:p>
"I'm delighted and proud to sign for AC Milan!" he said. "A club with such rich history, one I've followed since I was a kid. It's an honour to join and I can't wait to pull on the Rossoneri shirt and get started.<o:p></o:p>
He added: "A huge thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way, both on and off the pitch. See you soon! Forza Milan."<o:p></o:p>

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti quashed rumours regarding the future of star forward Vinicius Junior on Friday, saying the Brazilian is committed to staying with the reigning European and Spanish champions.
<h2>Ancelotti comments on Vinicius Jr</h2>
Spanish media have reported that Vinicius, 24, received a stratospheric offer to join a Saudi Arabian club.
"From what I've heard, as someone who has direct information from the player, is that he is very happy here and wants to make history at Real Madrid," Ancelotti said during his press conference ahead of Madrid's La Liga match against Valladolid on Saturday.
"We are happy here, and we want to make history," added the Italian coach.
"You have to ask him, I don't know if this offer arrives or not. I can say what I see: a happy player, who is making history and who wants to continue like this."&nbsp;
Vinicius will miss the weekend's match as he serves a two-match suspension, but his absence is not a cause of concern for Ancelotti.

"He is the same as always. Not playing tomorrow (Saturday) will be good for him to recover, to work calmly. He will make the most of these days. And he'll be fresh at the key moment," the 65-year-old said.
Ancelotti added he was not sick of addressing questions regarding the FIFA Best player and his future.
"No, these days I've been getting too angry at press conferences and I shouldn't do that. And I know why. It's something I've reflected on these days. No, I'm not bothered by Vinicius questions."

Team India could have a major scare as they prepare for the second T20I against England on Saturday (Jan 25) with Abhishek Sharma reportedly injured in training. According to media reports, Abhishek did not bat in training due to an injury he sustained on Friday after twisting his ankle. Abhishek is India&rsquo;s first-choice opener alongside Sanju Samson and is highly unlikely to play in the Chennai T20I.
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Abhishek doubtful for Chennai T20I</h2>
According to a report from Cricbuzz, Abhishek twisted his ankle in training, making him unavailable for batting on the eve of the Chennai T20I. In case he is unable to recover, the Indian team management will have to search for a replacement as they look to extend their lead in the series. India won the opening T20I by seven wickets, where Abhishek scored 79 runs and was the architect-in-chief with the bat.
Sanju Samson scored 26 off 20 before Tilak Varma (19) and Hardik Pandya (3) completed the formalities.
At the time of writing, the team management had yet to comment on the situation, meaning Abhishek is not officially ruled out of the Chennai contest.

In case the versatile SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) batter is ruled out, India could promote Tilak Varma to the opener&rsquo;s position. Rinku Singh also remains a candidate to open the Indian innings in case Abhishek misses out.
A win for India will take them one more step towards winning the five-match T20I series, while England will have plenty of work to do on the field. The English side is one of the favourites to win the Champions Trophy starting on February 19 and will look to build momentum for the tournament.
The contest will start at 7:00 PM, with the toss taking place at 6:30 PM IST at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Djokovic retired injured after losing the hard-fought first set, leaving his bid for the record 25th Slam title in tatters on Friday (Jan 24). Novak played with a heavily taped upper left leg he injured during the gruelling quarterfinal clash against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/carlos-alcaraz">Carlos Alcaraz</a> and called time on his semi-final game after going down 6-7 (5-7) in the first set.

Leaving the Melbourne court to a mixture of boos and applause from the crowd, Djokovic&rsquo;s injury meant Zverev made it to his maiden Australian Open final, facing the winner of the second semi-final between the defending champion Jannik Sinner and Ben Shelton on Sunday in the summit clash.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, Djokovic&rsquo;s exit meant he has gone five majors without winning the title he needs to surpass Margaret Court's tally (24) and become the all-time leader.
Besides, the defeat, as it would looked at, deprived Novak of reaching his 100th career title, with former Tennis legend Roger Federer (102) remaining the only player (male or female) to surpass the century mark.&nbsp;
<h2>Zverev&rsquo;s time to shine</h2>
Zverev rose to the occasion, giving a tough fight to the title contender and cementing his place as one of the favourites to win this year&rsquo;s first major. Although he made it to his maiden AO Final without beating his semis opponent, Zverev was the Grand Slam runners-up twice last year at the French and the US Open.
Even last year, the German made it to the last four of the Australian Open, but despite holding a 2-0 lead against Daniil Medvedev in his semis clash, he fell shy of making it to the final and realising his dream. He returned stronger this season after ending the previous year as the ranked number two player.
<h3>Djokovic injury concern</h3>
The former world number one entered the contest with questions over his fitness following needing medical attention during the quarterfinal clash against Alcaraz.&nbsp;
Even before this highly-anticipated match, Djokovic admitted to being worried about his fitness.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, after two-and-fro for over an hour, Djokovic surrendered the first set, which went till the tie-breaker, with Zverev coming on top.&nbsp;
<h3>Australian wildcards Gadecki-Peers win mixed doubles title</h3>
Wild card duo Olivia Gadecki and John Peers won the Australian Open 2025 mixed doubles title after beating compatriots Kimberly Birrell and John-Patrick Smith in an all-Aussie summit clash on Friday (Jan 24).
The Australian wildcards earned a comeback 3-6, 6-4 (10-6) win over compatriots Birrell and Smith in one hour and 24 minutes.
Gadecki and Peers were presented the trophy by Grand Slam champions Lesley Bowrey and Bill Bowrey, and the victory marks a second Australian title for Peers, who won the men&rsquo;s doubles title with Henri Kontinen in 2017.

Flick said his team also had to work on their defensive mistakes against Benfica ahead of the Valencia clash.<o:p></o:p>
"It's important we speak about this, because the next opponents will look at this match and we have to make it better, and we will do that," said the German coach. "We will train on this, if it's possible, or we can (discuss it) in the meeting, we can do some technical things.<o:p></o:p>
"We analyse everything and we'll show (the players) what we have to do better."<o:p></o:p>
La Liga's top goalscorer Robert Lewandowski netted twice in midweek from the penalty spot but has only produced one goal in his last five league matches.<o:p></o:p>
Getafe also managed to keep Barca's teenage starlet Lamine Yamal quiet, which few other sides have managed this season.<o:p></o:p>
Corberan called on his Valencia team to keep improving ahead of the trip to Barcelona.<o:p></o:p>
"We have to keep growing, I'm going to get the most out of every game we play," said the Valencia coach. "I'm not here to say that we have to grow for the sake of it, it's a reality of football.<o:p></o:p>
"The team is increasing in terms of personality, dedication, commitment and it's very important to consolidate that."<o:p></o:p>
Valencia have only been relegated once in the club's history, in 1986, and were promoted the following year.<o:p></o:p>
Their improvement under Corberan will be confirmed if they can take even a point from title challengers Barcelona, which could prove vital come the end of the season.

Hyderabad defeated Jamshedpur FC by 3-2 at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season on Thursday (Jan 23). After scoring first and then conceding twice, the home side struck the back of the net twice in a short passage of play in the second half to clinch all three points from this match, where they held 54.1% of the possession and took four shots on target. This was their first win in nine games since beating KBFC on 7th Nov 2024 and breaking their four-game losing streak against Jamshedpur FC.
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Hyderabad win in ISL</h2>
Jamshedpur FC caught on to the momentum and Imran Khan served Murray a delivery inside the box, which the latter aimed to pounce upon immediately but shot high and wide to the left despite hitting it from the centre of the 18-yard area.
Hyderabad FC regained their offensive edge in the second half of the game though. There was a back and forth sequence of attacks between both sides but a blend of defensive organisation and offensive retaliations ensured that the hosts never totally ceded control over the game.
It took Ramhlunchhunga to come up with a precise delivery inside the final third in the 69th minute to draw scores level again. Joseph Sunny was on the move but showed impeccable composure to pick the ball and direct it straight to the top right corner in a smooth stretch of play to drag his side back into the contest.

Just as was the case with Jamshedpur FC in the first half, Hyderabad FC had a brief passage of play after this goal where they operated overwhelmingly on the offensive, testing the robustness of the Jamshedpur FC defensive line. An individual moment of brilliance from Andrei Alba sealed the deal for them in the 74th minute.
Manoj, who was the protagonist of setting up the first goal of the night, repeated those heroics to cap off the clash as his pass was well received and then nestled into the bottom left corner from the outside of the box by Alba to get Hyderabad FC forward and secure all three points for them.

<h2>Davies injured for Bayern</h2>
Davies, 24, was subbed out in first-half stoppage time in Wednesday's 3-0 loss to Feyenoord.

Formula One drivers face the possibility of fines or points deductions after the FIA introduced new guidelines to punish swearing or other sporting violations.&nbsp;
An initial tightening of the rules in 2024 was criticised by a number of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/formula-1">F1</a> drivers, notably four-time world champion <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/max-verstappen">Max Verstappen</a>, but the FIA, the sport's governing body, has decided to go further.&nbsp;
In a statement released on Wednesday evening, the FIA defined misconduct as "the general use of language (written or verbal), gesture and/or sign that is offensive, insulting, coarse, rude or abusive and might reasonably be expected or be perceived to be coarse or rude or to cause offence, humiliation or to be inappropriate".&nbsp;
Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/football/manchester-city-sign-egyptian-forward-marmoush-from-eintracht-frankfurt-8647012">Manchester City sign Egyptian forward Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt</a>
It also included "assaulting (elbowing, kicking, punching, hitting, etc.)", and "incitement to do any of the above".
A scale of sanctions has been revealed with fines ranging from 10,000 to 15,000 euros for a first offence, from 20,000 to 30,000 euros for a repeat offence and 30,000 to 45,000 euros for a further offence.&nbsp;
But these amounts will be multiplied by four for Formula One drivers, by three for those competing in rally (WRC) or endurance (WEC) and by two for participants in regional championships.
Last season, Verstappen was ordered to do some community service for swearing in a press conference while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was fined 10,000 euros for a similar offence.
Neither sanction was well received by the drivers who also criticised certain statements by FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.&nbsp;
"When it comes to swearing, there is a difference between a swear word intended to insult others and more casual swear words, such as those one might use when talking about bad weather, an inanimate object such as a Formula 1 car, or a driving situation", the drivers wrote in an open letter at the beginning of November.
"We urge the FIA president to also consider his own tone and language when talking to our member drivers, or indeed about them, whether in a public forum or otherwise."
"Furthermore, our members are adults. They do not need to be given instructions via the media, about matters as trivial as the wearing of jewellery or underpants," they added.

An initial tightening of the rules in 2024 was criticised by a number of F1 drivers, notably four-time world champion Max Verstappen, but the FIA has decided to go further. Sports

Formula One drivers face the possibility of fines or points deductions after the FIA introduced new guidelines to punish swearing or other sporting violations. An initial tightening of the rules in 2024 was criticised by a number of F1 drivers, notably four-time world champion Max Verstappen, but the FIA, the sport's governing body, has decided to go further. In a statement released on Wednesday evening, the FIA defined misconduct as "the general use of language (written or verbal), gesture and/or sign that is offensive, insulting, coarse, rude or abusive and might reasonably be expected or be perceived to be coarse or rude or to cause offence, humiliation or to be inappropriate". Also Read: Manchester City sign Egyptian forward Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt It also included "assaulting (elbowing, kicking, punching, hitting, etc.)", and "incitement to do any of the above". A scale of sanctions has been revealed with fines ranging from 10,000 to 15,000 euros for a first offence, from 20,000 to 30,000 euros for a repeat offence and 30,000 to 45,000 euros for a further offence. Neither sanction was well received by the drivers who also criticised certain statements by FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. "When it comes to swearing, there is a difference between a swear word intended to insult others and more casual swear words, such as those one might use when talking about bad weather, an inanimate object such as a Formula 1 car, or a driving situation", the drivers wrote in an open letter at the beginning of November. "We urge the FIA president to also consider his own tone and language when talking to our member drivers, or indeed about them, whether in a public forum or otherwise." "Furthermore, our members are adults. They do not need to be given instructions via the media, about matters as trivial as the wearing of jewellery or underpants," they added. America&rsquo;s Madison Keys will have a shot at glory on Saturday in the women&rsquo;s singles Australian Open final after she beat Iga Swiatek at the Rod Laver Arena. Playing in the second semifinal on Thursday (Jan 23), Keys saved a match point and reached her second Grand Slam final with a thrilling 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (10-8) win. Keys will now take on defending two-time champion Aryna Sabalenka in the championship match on Saturday. <o:p></o:p>
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Keys shocks Swiatek<o:p></o:p></h2>
Playing to reach their first Australian Open final, the contest between Keys and Swiatek hardly disappointed as both showcased their aggression on the court. In a close contested opening set, Keys lost her serve at the decisive moment, allowing Swiatek to take advantage. She pocketed the opening set 5-7 having won the decisive 12th game. Overall, Swiatek won 59 per cent first serve points, establishing her superiority in the contest.
<o:p></o:p>The second set, however, was completely different as 29-year-old Keys bounced back and broke Swiatek on three occasions. As a result, Keys won the second set to bring the match level as the match headed to a decider.
The third set was closer as both held on to their serves until the 10th game. However, Swiatek drew first blood in the third set and broke Keys to serve for the match. The Poland star then had a match point in the 12th game of the third set but failed to capitalise, paving the way for a 10-point tiebreak.

Australian Open 2025: Madison Keys saves match point against Iga Swiatek to reach second Grand Slam final

Son of former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, Rocky, has made an instant impact on the global stage by smashing his maiden ton on Thursday (Jan 23). Playing against Cricket Australia XI at Allan Border Field in Brisbane, Rocky Flintoff scored 108 before he was dismissed. The ton comes on his second international tour at 16, giving glimpses of his father, who helped England win the 2005 Ashes. Interestingly, Andrew was in the dugout as the head coach of the England Lions during the match.<o:p></o:p>
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Rocky makes instant impact<o:p></o:p></h2>
Coming out to bat at No. 9, Rocky scored 108, carrying on with the legacy of his father at teenage. His innings consisted of 9 fours and 6 sixes and he scored at a healthy strike rate of 85, having faced 127 deliveries. This innings came after the captain, Alex Davies, had scored 76 off 109 and stitched an opening partnership of 50 runs followed by a batting collapse.

Freddie McCann&rsquo;s 51 was the only other significant inning for the England Lions before Flintoff stole the show with his superb all-round display. He scored runs at a decent rate to take his side above 300 and establish a first innings lead for the visitors.
In doing so, Rocky replicated his father, who represented the national side for over a decade. He famously helped England win the 2005 Ashes, ending the 18-year drought. He represented England in 79 Test matches and 141 ODIs and had a career stretching over a decade. During this period, he also helped England finish runners-up in the 2004 Champions Trophy as they narrowly missed out on glory.<o:p></o:p>
