<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Manchester City Champions League qualification scenario<o:p></o:p></h2>
Man City are 25th in the 36-team standing, meaning they are outside the qualification bracket with one match to go. In seven league matches so far, the Premier League side has eight points, having won two, drawn two and lost the other three matches. City host Belgian outfit Club Brugge in the final game on Wednesday (Jan 29) and need to finish at least 24th in the standings for a place in the playoffs. <o:p></o:p>
As things stand, City can reach a maximum of 11 points, meaning they will have to win their match against Club Brugge. Interestingly, PSG&rsquo;s head-to-head match against German side Stuttgart on the final day favours Man City&rsquo;s qualification chances as both teams have 10 points each.
This would mean at least one team (team losing the match) or both teams (in case of a draw) will drop points.

Jannik Sinner insists nothing is being taken for granted ahead of his Australian Open semi-final, with the world number one warning that he is constantly striving to get "better and stronger".<o:p></o:p>
The Italian top seed faces Ben Shelton on Friday, just two matches away from a first successful Grand Slam title defence after winning his maiden major crown in Melbourne last year.<o:p></o:p>

That sparked a breakthrough season in which he won eight titles, including the US Open and ATP Finals, to open a chasm between himself and number two Alexander Zverev in the rankings.<o:p></o:p>
He has drawn level with fellow Italian great Nicola Pietrangeli on five Grand Slam singles semi-finals, and with that comes experience of the big occasion.<o:p></o:p>
American 21st-seed Shelton will be making only his second last-four appearance at a major after his run at the 2023 US Open, where he was beaten by eventual champion Novak Djokovic.<o:p></o:p>
"I've been in these situations already sometimes now," said 23-year-old Sinner. "But you know, at the end of the day, every match, it starts with 0-0 and you just try to do your best. This is the only thing I can control.<o:p></o:p>
"If someone plays better than me that day, I can't really do anything. We never take things for granted. <o:p></o:p>

The nature of Sinner's commanding thrashing of Alex de Minaur in the quarter-finals on Wednesday was a reminder of the level he has hit regularly across the past 12 months, after struggling with illness in his fourth-round match.<o:p></o:p>
With the de Minaur victory, Sinner extended his win streak at hardcourt Grand Slam events to 19 matches, following his Australian Open title run in 2024 and his triumph at the US Open.<o:p></o:p>
<h2>Shelton opportunity<o:p></o:p></h2>
Shelton, a year younger at 22, is undeterred and planning to enjoy the moment.<o:p></o:p>
"Obviously, Jannik, defending champion. We know what he's done," said Shelton. "I'm really looking forward to it. <o:p></o:p>
"I think that anytime you get to line up against the best in the world is a great opportunity to improve your game and see where you're at, and that's what Friday will be for me."<o:p></o:p>
Up six places to number 14 this week in the live rankings, Shelton could move as high as five by winning his first Grand Slam title.<o:p></o:p>
Whoever comes through that showdown will face 10-time champion Djokovic or second seed Zverev in Sunday's final.<o:p></o:p>
They also play on Friday with the Serbian great targeting a record 25th Grand Slam title to surpass Margaret Court and Zverev gunning for a first.<o:p></o:p>
Djokovic pushed through the pain with his upper left leg taped to beat Carlos Alcaraz in a classic quarter-final, with the question whether the 37-year-old can get back up and do the same to Zverev.<o:p></o:p>
"I'm concerned. I am, to be honest, physically," he said after taking down the third-seeded Spaniard. "But if I manage somehow to be physically good enough, I think mentally, emotionally I'm as motivated as I can be.<o:p></o:p>
"I'm playing Zverev, who is in great form, and he is going for his first Grand Slam. I think he loves the conditions. He's got a big serve. He's a super dangerous opponent on this surface against anyone."<o:p></o:p>
Zverev has been trying for a decade to win a Grand Slam and is in good touch as he prepares to take the next step in Melbourne.<o:p></o:p>
"You're not going to get to the semis of a Grand Slam by not deserving to be there and not playing great tennis," he said. "So I'm going to prepare myself for a tough battle."

PSG push Man City to UCL elimination with comeback win; Arsenal seal last 16 spot

Captain Jos Buttler says England's match against Afghanistan at the Champions Trophy should go ahead after calls for a boycott over the Taliban regime's assault on women's rights.
A group of more than 160 British politicians have written to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) calling for England not to play the match in Lahore on February 26.
Since returning to power in 2021, the Taliban have effectively banned the participation of women in both sport and broader public life.
That puts the Afghanistan Cricket Board at odds with the rules of governing body the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Buttler said sports and politics should be kept separate.
"Political situations like this, as a player you're trying to be as informed as you can be," he told reporters ahead of the first T20 against India in Kolkata on Wednesday.
"The experts know a lot more about it, so I've been trying to stay in dialogue with Rob Key (managing director of ECB) and the guys above to see how they see it."

"I don't think a boycott is the way to go about it," he added.
"Certainly as a player, you don't want political situations to affect sport. We hope to go to the Champions Trophy and play that game and have a really good tournament."
The ECB has resisted calls for a boycott, with chief executive Richard Gould saying instead he would "actively advocate" for collective action by the ICC instead.
The ICC have allowed the Afghanistan men's team to keep competing in global competitions.

The ICC have allowed the Afghanistan men's team to keep competing in global competitions. England are clubbed with Afghanistan, Australia and South Africa in the group phase of the Champions Trophy, which begins on February 19. IND vs ENG, 1st T20I match prediction: India look to continue impressive run under Suryakumar Yadav

Liverpool beat Lille 2-1 on Tuesday to maintain their perfect record in this season's Champions League and clinch qualification for the last 16, while Barcelona produced a stunning comeback to beat Benfica 5-4 in a classic to secure their own place.
The Anfield side are the only team with a maximum 21 points from seven matches in this new, expanded Champions League and they now know they will skip next month's play-offs and head straight to the last 16 in March.
Mohamed Salah ran clear to give Liverpool the lead at home to a Lille team who have also impressed this season, and the visitors appeared in trouble when they had Aissa Mandi sent off just before the hour mark.
Jonathan David swept in an equaliser for Lille, but Harvey Elliott's shot took a wicked deflection on its way in to give Liverpool the points.
"We're happy that we are top eight. That's the only thing that tells me something, because this league table doesn't tell you anything," said Slot when asked about being through to the last 16.
The biggest drama on the night, however, came in the rain in Lisbon, where Barcelona trailed 4-2 with 12 minutes of the 90 remaining, but somehow recovered to win 5-4.
Greek striker Vangelis Pavlidis scored a hat-trick in the first half-hour for Benfica, including a penalty, while Robert Lewandowski netted from the spot for Barca, who were 3-1 down at the interval.
Raphinha pulled it back to 3-2 when a clearance by the goalkeeper ricocheted back off the Brazilian's head and in, but a Ronald Araujo own goal midway through the second half appeared to have secured the win for the Portuguese side.
However, another Lewandowski penalty on 78 minutes gave Barcelona renewed hope, and Eric Garcia headed in the equaliser on 86 minutes, before Raphinha ran away to settle an incredible game.
"The mentality of the team, they always believe in themselves and this was unbelievable to see," said Barcelona coach Hansi Flick.
The Catalans are second with six wins out of seven, and will finish in the top eight to go straight to the last 16. Benfica, with 10 points, must still sweat to reach the play-off round.

<h2>Alvarez gives Atletico victory</h2>
Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid are third on 15 points and certain to at least be in the play-offs after a Julian Alvarez brace secured a 2-1 home victory over Bayer Leverkusen in a game both teams finished with 10 men.
Atletico had Pablo Barrios sent off midway through the first half, and Piero Hincapie then put Leverkusen ahead just before the break.
Argentina star Alvarez levelled seven minutes into the second half, and Hincapie was sent off for the Germans before another Alvarez goal won it for the home side in the last minute as they climbed above Leverkusen.
Last season's Europa League winners Atalanta are also guaranteed at least a play-off place after crushing Sturm Graz of Austria 5-0.
Mateo Retegui, Mario Pasalic, Charles De Ketelaere, Ademola Lookman and Marco Brescianini all scored for the Italians.
Monaco got back to winning ways after some disappointing results had seen their campaign stall, as Wilfried Singo's early goal proved enough for them to beat Aston Villa 1-0.
Both teams are set to progress to the knockout phase and both could still finish in the top eight.
Last season's runners-up Borussia Dortmund should also be fine despite a 2-1 defeat away to Bologna, as substitutes Thijs Dallinga and Samuel Iling-Junior scored a minute apart in the second half after Serhou Guirassy's early penalty had put the Germans in front.
Club Brugge held Juventus to a 0-0 draw in Belgium as that duo both look set to go through to the play-offs at least, while PSV Eindhoven are poised to advance following a 3-2 win at Red Star Belgrade.
PSV led 3-0 at the break thanks to a Luuk de Jong double and a Ryan Flamingo strike, but the latter was sent off early in the second half and Red Star pulled goals back courtesy of Cherif Ndiaye and Nasser Djiga.
VfB Stuttgart maintained their hopes of reaching the play-offs with a 3-1 win away to Slovan Bratislava, who have lost every game.
Jamie Leweling bagged a brace for Stuttgart and Fabian Rieder sealed their victory after Idjessi Metsoko had pulled one back.

Having reached the Australian Open semis on two previous occasions in 2015 and 2022, Keys was up against Svitolina who was also bidding for her maiden title. It was the Ukrainian who drew the first blood in the match, breaking Keys in the decisive fifth game of the opening set. This led the foundation for Svitolina to pocket the opening set 6-3 and establish early dominance. <o:p></o:p>
However, that dominance did not last long as Keys rallied back into the contest with three pin-point aces and winning 75 per cent of her first serve. Svitolina on the other hand struggled with her first serve winning just 57 per cent of points. Keys also had 20 winners compared to Svitolina&rsquo;s seven, as the US star won the second set 6-3. <o:p></o:p>
The third set was on even until the fifth game before Keys struck with a lethal counter-attack to break Svitolina. The 29-year-old American would consolidate on her advantage to book a place in the semis.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has backed Mohammed Shami to come good in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. Speaking on Monday (Jan 20), Ganguly compared Shami to star bowler Jasprit Bumrah as team India bids for its third Champions Trophy title. According to the former captain, his fellow Bengal player is the second-best bowler after Bumrah and could prove vital if India are to lift the trophy for the third time.
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Ganguly in awe of Shami</h2>
"I'm happy to see Shami fit because I think he's probably the best bowler after (Jasprit) Bumrah in the country...I know he'll be a bit nervous because he's playing cricket after a long time, especially with a knee injury, but the good thing is that he bowled a lot for Bengal in domestic cricket, which is going to help him in the games to come," Ganguly said while speaking to PTI news agency.
Veteran Shami will return to the Indian team for the first time since the 2023 ODI World Cup final where the hosts finished runners-up. Shami&rsquo;s performance was the highlight for India as he scalped 24 wickets in seven matches, with a best of 57/7 against New Zealand in the semis. He was the standout performer for India in the tournament before injury spoiled his entire 2024.

The 34-year-old has since missed domestic and international cricket due to a serious knee inury that kept him away from action.
Shami did not play in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) for Gujarat Titans as they missed out on playoffs.
However, his return to the Indian team will be a boost, considering Bumrah is facing a race against time to be fit for the Champions Trophy.
Interestingly, India have opted against using Mohammed Siraj for the Champions Trophy as he was dropped in favour of Arshdeep Singh. The left-arm pacer will be part of the ODI set having been part of the Indian team during the T20 World Cup winning triumph.

England head coach Brendon McCullum has all but confirmed skipper Jos Buttler&rsquo;s role in the field as they set their sights on the upcoming T20I series against India. The series starting on Wednesday (Jan 22) will see England kick off the white-ball tour before they play in the Champions Trophy 2025. According to McCullum, Buttler will feature solely as a batter and will not keep wickets. Instead, Phil Salt will act as the wicketkeeper, with Buttler given added incentive to go around the field and build team tactics while in conversation with the bowler.
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">McCullum lifts lid on Buttler&rsquo;s role</h2>
"It's really a really positive thing for us, because it gives Jos the opportunity to have the last say with the bowler, and to have that relationship built at that last second, rather than from 22 yards away. We've got great keeping options within the side as well,&rdquo; said McCullum at the pre-match press conference.
England will start their eight-match white-ball tour to India on Wednesday where they will play five T20Is followed by three ODIs. Buttler will have huge duties on his shoulders as England look to add another ICC title to their arsenal. Since 2019, England has won the ODI World Cup and the T20I World Cup and would want to add another feather to his impressive hat.

Spain&rsquo;s Paula Badosa has reached her maiden career Grand Slam singles semifinal after&nbsp; stunning former US Open champion Coco Gauff on Tuesday (Jan 21). Badosa, playing in her first Australian quarterfinal, beat Gauff 7-5, 6-4 as she stands two steps away from the Australia Open title. She will next face the winner of Aryna Sabalenka and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova who play later on Tuesday.
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Badosa reaches maiden semis</h2>
Playing at the Rod Laver Arena in the scorching heat of Melbourne, Badosa and Gauff were level until the 11th game of the opening set where the former broke the serve to pocket the set. It was the same scene in the second set as Badosa won the decisive 10th game to pocket the match. Gauff&rsquo;s 41 unforced errors proved costly as it decided the outcome of the match.
In total, Badosa gave away only three break points while Gauff had to save six, having been broken four times in the match.
Another Achilles heel for Gauff was her second serve where she lost the point on six occasions, resulting in a double fault.

The two have developed a great rivalry in recent years having faced in back-to-back Wimbledon finals and also meeting in the Paris Olympics gold medal match. The winner of the match will potentially face Alexander Zverev in the semis.

Manchester City on Monday announced the signing of Uzbekistan centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov from French club Lens for a reported fee of 40 million euros ($42 million) plus add-ons.
<h2>Khusanov signs for Man City</h2>
Khusanov, the first player from Uzbekistan to join a Premier League club, has signed a four-and-a-half year deal at the Etihad.
"This squad is full of the best players in the world and I can't wait to meet them and play alongside them," said the 20-year-old, who has 18 international caps.
"And of course Pep Guardiola is one of the greatest coaches ever and I am so excited to learn from him and improve my game even more."
City's director of football Txiki Begiristain said: "For such a young defender, Abdukodir is already very intelligent, as well as being strong, aggressive and extremely quick.
"Working with Pep will only make him better and, speaking to him, he is determined to keep improving."

Premier League: Manchester City sign Uzbekistan defender Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens

Chelsea overcame a howler from goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to beat relegation-threatened Wolves 3-1 on Monday, ending a five-game winless run to climb back into the Premier League's top four.
Enzo Maresca's team were just two points behind leaders Liverpool in mid-December, raising hopes of an unlikely title challenge before losing their way.
Now they are back on track to qualify for next season's Champions League after second-half goals from Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke spared Sanchez's blushes.
The Spanish goalkeeper had dropped the ball moments before half-time, allowing Matt Doherty to cancel out Tosin Adarabioyo's opener.
Maresca said Chelsea had dominated the first 40 minutes before problems that have haunted them in recent weeks returned.
"We lost a little bit of confidence, we conceded a goal and we started to struggle a little bit and then the second half I think we started quite well and then after the second and third goals the game was in control," he told Sky Sports.
He added: "In the past five games we didn't win but I said many times that the performance was there. We created many chances, we didn't score and tonight finally we scored three goals."
Chelsea's top-scorer Cole Palmer, a doubt before the game, was fit to start as Maresca made five changes from last week's draw against Bournemouth including bringing in centre-back Trevoh Chalobah, recalled from his loan spell at Crystal Palace.
The home side dominated possession in the early stages and Palmer had a couple of early efforts, curling one wide and forcing Jose Sa into a diving save.
The home side were rewarded for their dominance midway through the first half when Adarabioyo fired home for his first Premier League goal for the club.
The defender controlled the ball well after it was deflected into his path from Reece James's shot from the edge of the box.
A number of Chelsea players were in offside positions in a crowded penalty area and the flag was raised but the on-field decision was overturned after a VAR check.

<h2>Sanchez blunder</h2>
Wolves, anaemic in attack for most of the first half, came back into the game as half-time approached, scoring with their first shot on target thanks to Sanchez's error.
The visitors won a corner and the goalkeeper dropped the inswinging delivery from Matheus Cunha under intense pressure when he could have punched clear, with Doherty poking home.
The home side started the second half brightly and were back in front on the hour mark when Cucurella hooked home on the stretch after Madueke's cross was flicked on by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
Five minutes later Chelsea had a two-goal cushion when Madueke scored his fourth goal of the season against Wolves, heading home Chalobah's goal-bound effort.
Sanchez palmed a Cunha shot behind with 10 minutes to go but Chelsea were largely comfortable despite the occasional minor scare and leapfrogged Newcastle and Manchester City, whom they face next.
Former Leicester boss Maresca, in his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge, stubbornly insisted his team were not in the title race even when they were flying high after five straight wins from late November.
Starting with a 0-0 draw at Everton just before Christmas, they took just three points from five games before returning to winning ways on Monday.
Wolves, who have conceded a league-high 51 goals, are outside the relegation zone on goal difference alone after three straight defeats following a bright start for new manager Vitor Pereira.

Formula 1: Lewis Hamilton begins 'a new chapter' with Ferrari

Defending champion Jannik Sinner needed medical attention in energy-sapping heat and overcame a long interruption when he broke the net to reach the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/australian-open">Australian Open</a> quarter-finals on Monday. The top seed again dropped a set before coming home 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 against dangerous Dane Holger Rune on Rod Laver Arena with both men needing medical attention.<o:p></o:p>
Sinner struggled in the muggy conditions, his hand visibly shaking and his heart rate taken in the third set before he left court for a medical timeout.<o:p></o:p>
Rune needed attention to a sore right knee in the same set.<o:p></o:p>

They then had a bizarre 20-minute delay when Sinner demolished the metal brace that secures the net to the floor with a thunderous serve early in set four.<o:p></o:p>
"It was for sure very, very tough," said Sinner, who is bidding to become the first Italian man to win three Grand Slam crowns. "I tried to stay there mentally, I tried to stay connected with my service game and in my return game just seeing what happens."<o:p></o:p>

Sports, Tennis: Sinner dropped a set before coming home 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 against dangerous Dane Holger Rune on Rod Laver Arena with both men needing medical attention.

Defending champion Jannik Sinner needed medical attention in energy-sapping heat and overcame a long interruption when he broke the net to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals on Monday. The top seed again dropped a set before coming home 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 against dangerous Dane Holger Rune on Rod Laver Arena with both men needing medical attention. Sinner struggled in the muggy conditions, his hand visibly shaking and his heart rate taken in the third set before he left court for a medical timeout. Rune needed attention to a sore right knee in the same set. "It was for sure very, very tough," said Sinner, who is bidding to become the first Italian man to win three Grand Slam crowns. "I tried to stay there mentally, I tried to stay connected with my service game and in my return game just seeing what happens." Asked what his medical problem was, he was evasive. India Open 2025: I am far from my best, says two-time Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen

The 37-year-old <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/tennis">tennis</a> great refused to do a routine on-court interview after beating Jiri Lehecka in three sets on Rod Laver Arena to make the quarter-finals on Sunday evening.<o:p></o:p>
Afterwards he said it was in protest at Tony Jones, a top sports presenter with host broadcaster Channel Nine, who he accused of "insulting and offensive comments" towards him and Serbian fans.<o:p></o:p>

Djokovic said he would boycott interviews with the TV station until he got an apology.<o:p></o:p>
"The comments were made on the news on the Friday night, which I considered to be banter. I considered it to be humour, which is consistent with most things I do," Jones said on Monday. "Having said that, I was made aware on Saturday morning, from Tennis Australia via the Djokovic camp, that the Djokovic camp was not happy at all with those comments. <o:p></o:p>
"As such I immediately contacted the Djokovic camp and issued and apology to them -- 48 hours ago -- for any disrespect that Novak felt, that I had caused.<o:p></o:p>
"As I stand here now I can only stand by that apology to Novak."<o:p></o:p>
The veteran broadcaster was live at Melbourne Park on Friday when a large group of Djokovic fans holding Serbian flags began cheering in the background behind him.<o:p></o:p>
Jones responded by singing to them: "Novak, he's overrated ... Novak's a has-been. Novak, kick him out."<o:p></o:p>
"I should also say the disrespect was extended, in many ways, to the Serbian fans," he said in his apology.<o:p></o:p>
"We have built up a nice rapport with the Serbian fans ... there is banter, and I thought what I was doing was an extension of that banter. Quite clearly that has not been interpreted that way.<o:p></o:p>
"I feel as though I've let down the Serbian fans. It has been an unfortunate situation."<o:p></o:p>
In a strongly worded statement issued before Jones's apology, the Serbian Council of Australia called for him to be sacked and said it had lodged a complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission.<o:p></o:p>
"His comments are offensive, racist and only serve to incite further discrimination of Australian-Serbs," it said.<o:p></o:p>
Jones was also a target for American player Danielle Collins last week after he labelled her a "brat" when she thanked Australian Open hecklers for "paying my bills" in her defeat of home hope Destanee Aiava.
