Sri Lanka batter Dinesh Chandimal joined a rare unfortunate club on Saturday (Feb 1) after he was dismissed twice in the same session during the opening contest against Australia. The rare spectacle happened on Day 4 of the contest as Sri Lanka tried to avoid defeat by an innings in the match. Interestingly, on both occasions, Nathan Lyon was the architect-in-chief for the Sri Lanka batter’s downfall.

Playing on Day 4 of the match, Chandimal was the lone fighter for Sri Lanka in the first innings as he scored 72 off 139. However, chasing Australia’s mammoth 654 runs in the first innings, the Lankan side showed little resistance and were bowled out for 165. The veteran batter was dismissed on the second ball of the 50th over before the hosts were bundled out.
Having been bowled out for 165, Australia captain Steve Smith decided to inflict a follow-on Sri Lanka as they had a lead of 489 runs. Asked to bat for the second time in the match, Sri Lanka had a disastrous start to their innings as they lost Oshada Fernando (6) and Dimuth Karunaratne (0) in the opening two overs.

Unfortunately for Chandimal, he was dismissed for the second time when the team score was 75. This meant he was dismissed for the second time in the same session. Sri Lanka would then lose their path having lost wickets at consistent intervals.

Suryakumar Yadav-led Team India won the T20I series 3-1 against England after an inspiring performance by Shivam Dube and Hardik Pandya as the duo rescued the hosts after a poor start on Friday (Jan 31). Playing at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, India were 12/3 at one stage and managed to post 181 thanks to the above-mentioned duo batting display.
India win T20I series

Tasked with defending 182 runs, the India bowling attack had a surprise inclusion as Harshit Rana made his debut as a concussion substitute. Despite England getting off to a flying start with Phillip Salt (23) and Ben Duckett (39), Indian bowlers made their comeback with wickets in quick succession. Vice-captain Harry Brook (51) showed little resilience with the bat but was not enough for the visitors.
Jos Buttler (2) failed to find his rhythm and English batters down the order hardly contributed. Harshit Rana was the pick of India bowlers with figures of 33/3 while Ravi Bishnoi also ended with 28/3 as England were bowled out for 166 in 19.4 overs.

The Men in Blue were reduced to 79/5 at one stage with Abhishek Sharma (29) and Rinku Singh (30) departing after getting starts.

Pandya’s innings consisted of 4 fours and 4 sixes while Dube’s innings consisted of 7 fours and 2 sixes. Courtesy of the duo, India ended with 181/9 in their 20 overs.
The two sides now meet in the dead-rubber contest on Sunday (Feb 2) before attention turns to the ODI series and the Champions Trophy 2025.

Afghanistan's women cricketers will be the first beneficiaries of a new global refugee fund announced on Friday by the London-based Marylebone Cricket Club.

Afghanistan's women cricketers get MCC help

Hundreds of female athletes fled Afghanistan as the Taliban took over in August 2021, escaping a hardline stance that essentially banned women's sport and education.
Most of the national women's cricket side settled as refugees in Australia, where they reunited for the first time on Thursday to play a charity match in Melbourne.
The MCC campaign's initial focus will be to raise funds for Pitch Our Future, an Australian-led programme that supports players from the former Afghan women's team, providing training facilities and educational opportunities.
The fund aims to raise an initial £1 million ($1.2 million), with contributions from the England and Wales Cricket Board, corporate sponsorships, government grants and donations from other international boards.
The MCC owns Lord's cricket ground in London and is the custodian of the laws of the game.
Rob Lynch, interim chief executive and secretary of MCC, said: "The Global Refugee Cricket Fund represents a vital step forward in our mission to use cricket as a force for good."
Clare Connor, deputy chief executive of the ECB and a former England women's captain, said: "The cricket community must take action to support the brave Afghan women and to give hope that cricket can be a sport for any woman or girl."
The England men's team have faced calls to boycott their Champions Trophy match against Afghanistan in Lahore on February 26.

But the game is set to go ahead even though the Taliban's move to effectively ban female participation puts the Afghanistan Cricket Board at odds with International Cricket Council rules.
Both the ECB and Cricket Australia have said they will not play the Afghanistan men in bilateral series but will face them in global tournaments, where a failure to take the field would likely see their teams docked competition points.

It was a bowling spectacle for England’s Saqib Mahmood as he displayed a flawless performance with the ball in the fourth T20I against hosts India on Friday (Jan 31). Playing at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, Mahmood scalped the trio of Sanju Samson (1), Tilak Varma (0) and skipper Suryakumar Yadav in one over to set the stage on fire. In the second over of the Indian innings, Mahmood was in superb form as he first dismissed Samson followed by Varma to be on hat-trick. He got the better of both Indian batters on back-to-back deliveries leaving India all over the place. Captain Suraykumar Yadav was the next prey for Mahmood as he got the better of him on the last ball of the over, again on a duck.
From 12/0, India were soon 12/3 as they struggled against the pace attack led by the 27-year-old. To add more woes for the hosts, the triple wicket over ended up being a maiden as England were at the top of their game.

Having returned to the domestic red-ball circuit after December 2012, Virat became the third Delhi-born batter to play 100 Test matches for India. The Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) on Friday, decided to honour the two-time World Cup winner for his remarkable achievement with the national side. During this ceremony, Virat touched Rajakumar Sharma’s feet as netizens applauded his gesture despite having a quiet day with the bat where he scored six runs.
Having been called out to bat in the opening session of Day 2, the former India captain was given a warm welcome by the crowd as fans thronged the stadium. However, Virat’s return was brief as he was dismissed for 6 in the first innings by Himanshu Sangwan. Incessant afternoon rain forced an early end to day three of the first Test between Australia and Sri Lanka on Friday, with the visitors leading by 518 and former home skipper Dinesh Chandimal waging a lone battle on 63.
Sri Lanka were 136-5 by lunch in Galle, with wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis also at the crease on 10, after losing two more wickets from their overnight 44-3.
The break was called early and players were kept off the pitch through the afternoon, with officials calling an end 90 minutes before the scheduled finish.
Kamindu Mendis departed for 15 after an edge to the keeper off Mitchell Starc, further denting the Bradman-like average he maintained at the start of his Test comeback last year.
Captain Dhananjaya de Silva looked comfortable before rushing down the track to Matthew Kuhnemann and missing the ball completely, gifting Alex Carey a regulation stumping and leaving for 22.
Left-arm speedster Starc expertly created rough patches outside the off stump, while Nathan Lyon relentlessly probed away from the other end.
Chandimal, who was promoted to the crucial number three position last year and has since averaged over 50, stood firm despite the uphill battle to avoid the follow-on.

Australia declared on 654-6 late on the second day after opener Usman Khawaja's career-best 232.
The opening day saw stand-in skipper Steve Smith join the elite club of 10,000 career Test run-makers, the fifteenth player and fourth Australian to reach the milestone.
Picturesque Galle will also host the second and final match of the series next week before a two-match ODI series in Colombo.

SL vs AUS, Galle Test: Rain plays spoilsport as Australia tighten grip with flawless bowling display

India is all set to resume its Davis Cup 2025 campaign on Saturday (Feb 1) as they take on Togo in the World Group 1 Playoff. In a rare spectacle in recent years, India will have the home advantage as they take on the African side. The clash will take place over the weekend at Delhi’s DLTA Complex. Ahead of the key clash India Davis Cup captain Rohit Rajpal spoke exclusively to WION.

Rohit Rajpal speaks to WION

India will be without their big-name players like Sumit Nagal and Yuki Bhambri as the team goes through a phase of transition. Speaking to WION’s Aditya Pimpale, Rajpal reckons his side is ready to take advantage of the home conditions. Interestingly, only one of India’s last five Davis Cup ties was at home, including an away tie against Pakistan.

Question: Is India ready to take advantage of home conditions in the upcoming Davis Cup tie?

We have not been able to really take advantage of the home ties, but we are happy this one is here in India. God willing, we get off to a good start and take it one match at a time, and move forward. Since I took over as a captain, we have had a different format but managed to cope with the change. However, I reckon India is ready to take advantage of the home tie and advance to the qualifiers.

Question: Can you tell us more about the change in format since you have taken over?

Earlier, we were seated in Asia, and we would get an easy team, but that is not the case now. However, with the world qualifiers format, it is difficult to come back in case we lose the tie as you play teams from around the world. You are playing the top teams around the world and to survive and to move forward is a challenge by itself.

Question: India is now going through a phase of transition, so how do you reckon is the nation adapting to the change in the tennis circuit?

We no longer have the big guys like Leander Paes, Rohan Bopanna and Mahesh Bhupathi while Sumit Nagal is unavailable. However, the team has adapted well to the transition process as players like Rithvik Bollipalli, Mukund Sasikumar and Karan Singh are gaining vital experience on the tour. We also have veterans like N Sriram Balaji and Ramkumar Ramanathan who we saw play at the Australian Open. So overall we are adapting well to the change in the tennis circuit and reckon India can cause an upset.

There will be no opening ceremony in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) receives a mini-setback even before the curtains are raised on the coveted tournament. With the Champions Trophy 2025 set for its return after eight years, media reports on Thursday (Jan 30) have stated that there will be no opening ceremony. This will also mean India skipper Rohit Sharma will avoid visiting Pakistan, in what could have been the first trip for an Indian captain since 2008.

No opening ceremony for Champions Trophy

According to prominent cricketing site Cricbuzz, both ICC and PCB have reportedly cancelled the opening ceremony, which was likely to take place on Feb 16 in Lahore. However, with teams like Australia and England set to reach on Feb 18 and later, it was unlikely that the opening ceremony and photo-op of skippers were possible. The English side is likely to take a break after the India series, which could result in their delayed arrival.
"An opening ceremony was never announced either by the ICC or the PCB," as quoted by Cricbuzz’s source well-versed with the development. The PCB did not comment but did not deny that there won't be an opening ceremony or captains' photo shoot.

As things stand, if the opening ceremony is cancelled, India skipper Rohit Sharma will avoid a trip to Pakistan. The latest development means that the Indian skipper will be next in action during his side’s opening match against Bangladesh on Feb 20 in Dubai.

In a delightful moment during the ongoing Delhi versus Railways Ranji Trophy match on Thursday (Jan 30), cricket fans were treated to an emotional scene when Virat Kohli celebrated with Navdeep Saini after the latter bowled out Vivek Singh for a duck.

Virat comes with emotional moment

The moment unfolded in the seventh over, when Navdeep bowled a well-executed length delivery that swung inward, catching Vivek completely off guard. With a poor shot selection, Vivek failed to pick up the movement of the ball, which crashed into the off-stump, leaving him with no runs after facing just 14 balls.
But what made this moment stand out wasn’t just the dismissal—it was the heartfelt embrace shared between Kohli and Saini immediately after. The two players, who had shared the IPL field together as teammates for Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2019 to 2021, demonstrated their strong bond in this brief, yet touching moment of celebration.
Virat, visibly excited, raced to Saini with an exuberant hug, relishing the wicket that put Delhi in a commanding position.

The visitors were 21/3 in the first hour of the opening session as Navdeep (62/3) and Siddhant Sharma (35/2) dominated. Railways lost wickets at regular intervals as the home side asserted their dominance. Upendra Yadav starred with the bat for the visitors as he scored 95 before being scalped by Sumit Mathur on 95.
The wicketkeeper-batter was unfortunate to miss out on a ton before the tail was wrapped in the final session. Karn Sharma (50), Mohammad Saif (24) and Himanshu Sangwan (29) showed little resistance with the bat for the Railways before they were bowled out for 241.

Sports, Cricket: The moment unfolded in the seventh over, when Navdeep bowled a well-executed length delivery that swung inward, catching Vivek Singh completely off guard.

Virat comes with emotional moment The moment unfolded in the seventh over, when Navdeep bowled a well-executed length delivery that swung inward, catching Vivek completely off guard. Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has left his role as Saudi side Al-Ettifaq's coach by mutual consent after 18 months of being in charge, the club said on Thursday.
Gerrard had been in charge since the summer of 2023 and a year ago signed a new deal to take him through to 2027.

Gerrard, Al-Ettifaq part ways

"Ettifaq football club and Steven Gerrard have mutually agreed to part company," the club said in a statement.
Last season, Al-Ettifaq finished sixth but the 44-year-old departs with the club 12th in the 18-team Saudi Pro League, having lost eight of their 17 matches.
"From the first day I was warmly welcomed and I have enjoyed the chance to work in a new country with a different culture," said Gerrard.
"So, overall, I have learned a lot, and it's been a positive experience personally and for my family as well."
"But football is unpredictable, and sometimes things don't go the way we want. I wish the team the very best for the rest of the season."
Gerrard took charge of Al-Ettifaq in 59 matches in all competitions, winning just 23, drawing 16 and losing 20.
"Sometimes things don't go as planned, but the firm foundations he helped build will guarantee a bright future in the long term," said club president Samer Al Mishal.
"He changed the club for the better, and that will never be forgotten."
"This decision, made with mutual respect and in agreement, is in the best interest of both Steven and the club as we move forward."

Gerrard spent most of his playing career at Liverpool, playing over 500 times for the club, winning the 2005 Champions League. He also won 114 England caps between 2000 and 2014, captaining the team 38 times.
He made a bright start to his management career when he led Rangers to their first Scottish title in 10 years in 2021.
Ending Celtic's dominance earned Gerrard a Premier League chance with Aston Villa.
But the 44-year-old struggled badly at Villa Park, finishing 14th in his first season and being sacked in 2022 after winning only two of the opening 12 games of the season.

Sri Lanka were 44-3 by stumps on day two at Galle with senior batsmen Dinesh Chandimal on nine and Kamindu Mendis on 13 when rain stopped play.

Veteran spinner Nathan Lyon then sent back former skipper Angelo Mathews out for eight as Travis Head took a diving catch at short leg.
Khawaja's 266-run third-wicket partnership with Steve Smith, who hit 141 in a landmark innings that got the stand-in skipper to 10,000 Test runs, stood out after Australia elected to bat first at the start of the two-match series.
It was the first time the tourists had breached the 600-run mark in Sri Lanka, surpassing their previous Asian high of 617, posted in Pakistan in 1980.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey was unbeaten on 46 with Mitchell Starc on 19 when Smith declared the first innings in the final session.
Inglis made it count when he walked in after Smith departed on 141.
He made 102 and with Khawaja kept up the batting surge in a 146-run stand to tire out the opposition attack.
Spinner Prabath Jayasuriya broke the partnership to get Khawaja caught behind as the opener walked back after 352 balls that included 16 fours and one six.
Inglis jumped in delight and punched the air as he reached his ton off 90 balls.
But he got out in the next over as he gave away a catch to short cover off Jayasuriya.

Jayasuriya and fellow spinner Jeffrey Vandersay took three wickets each as Sri Lanka toiled for 154 overs.
The tourists resumed on 330-2 as overnight batsmen Khawaja and Smith frustrated the opposition attack on a sunny morning.
Khawaja took a single off Jayasuriya to reach 200 as he removed his helmet, raised his bat, and dropped down to kiss the turf while teammates and fans stood up to applaud.
His previous best was an unbeaten 195 against South Africa in 2023 at Sydney, and he is now the first Australian batsman to make a double ton in Sri Lanka.

Virat Kohli, playing in the Ranji Trophy after more than a decade, requested chilli paneer for lunch on Day 1 of Delhi’s match against the Railways at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Kohli, who adopted a vegan diet in 2018, had previously favoured chilli chicken before giving up non-vegetarian food to maintain fitness.
According to Sports Today, Kohli declined chhole poori and instead opted for kadhai chawal with his teammates and support staff, according to a Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) official. Sanjay Jha, a long-time chef at the stadium’s canteen, shared his experience of Kohli’s food preferences over the years.
“I have been running this canteen for 25 years and have known Virat since his childhood. He used to eat here regularly and started his career from this ground, but he has remained humble. Even today, he interacts with us and the waiters like any other person,” Jha told Sports Today.
Jha recalled how Kohli used to enjoy chilli chicken and even recommended it to his teammates. “Now he prefers chole bhature or kadhi chawal. Once I asked if we should order food from outside, but he said he wanted to eat from our canteen itself,” he added.
Kohli had previously shared his diet details in 2021 during an "Ask Me Anything" session on Instagram, mentioning his intake of vegetables, eggs, coffee, quinoa, and spinach, along with a controlled portion of dosas.

England legend Kevin Pietersen has backed Sanju Samson to flourish despite his failure in the latest T20I against the visitors on Tuesday (Jan 29). According to Pietersen, the wicketkeeper-batter has nothing to worry about and has the mentality to succeed in the format. England beat India by 26 runs in the third T20I on Tuesday and they now trail India 1-2 in the five-match series.

Pietersen backs Samson

“I think mentally he's sound. I really like Sanju Samson as a batter. I actually love him. I was pretty surprised that he hasn't had more of a consistent role over the last few years. Yes, he's got a game here at the top of the order, but listen, these things happen. Things happen so quickly in the shortest form of the game,” Pietersen told the broadcasters after the match.
India were beaten in the Rajkot T20I having won earlier in Kolkata and Chennai as Samson endured form. The Rajasthan Royals captain has been in great form recently, having scored two centuries in the South Africa tour, but failed to replicate the same on Tuesday. The 30-year-old was dismissed for three and with question marks on his batting technique.

England dominate India in Rajkot

While Samson’s form has been the talking point, England kept their hopes of winning the series alive with a dominating win. Having scored 171/9 in 20 overs, England restricted India to 145 and trimmed the hosts' lead in the series. Ben Duckett was the top scorer for England with 51 runs off 28 while Liam Livingstone also contributed with 43.
India on the other hand struggled with batting and were 85/5 at one stage before the mini-revival. Hardik Pandya top scored with 40, but lack of support at the other end saw the Men in Blue end on a losing note.
The two sides next meet on Friday (Jan 31) in Pune as India will have another opportunity to pocket the series while England could take the series to the decider if they end up on the winning side.

With less than a month left before the start of the Champions Trophy 2025, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) faced a new low on Tuesday (Jan 28) evening. ICC CEO Geoff Allardice stepped down from his role on Tuesday, marking the first significant blow for the administrators and their decision to award Pakistan the hosting rights. The CEO reportedly stepped down from his role taking responsibility for Pakistan’s lack of preparedness in the build-up to the tournament.

Are Pakistan stadiums in mess?

"It has been a privilege to serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the International Cricket Council and I am incredibly proud of the results we have achieved, from enhancing the global reach of cricket to the commercial foundation put in place for ICC Members," Allardice said in a statement.
"I believe this is the right time for me to step down and pursue new challenges," he added.
While no accurate reason was given in his farewell statement, Allardice faced huge criticism for awarding hosting rights to Pakistan. Videos surfacing on social media have indicated that stadiums are not yet prepared and lack basic facilities.
It is not the first time Allardice has faced backlash as ICC had to allot extra funds during the ICC T20 World Cup in the United States. This also caused a huge backlash within the ICC, highlighting Allardice’s lack of proper administration.

While Allardice has been on the gunpoint, PCB has faced a significant backlash for its laziness to handle preparations. Netizens have slammed the PCB for poor stadium infrastructure while few vidoes on social media have also shown the poor quality of construction work.
As of January, the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore was yet to install seats for the fans. The stadium has no roof over sitting area, meaning fans will be exposed to harsh weather.

The Afghan women's cricket team had an eye-catching reunion on Wednesday (Jan 29) after they were seen together at an event in Australia. The exiled Afghan women’s side, led by Nahida Sapan and Firooza Amiri, criticised the Taliban rule in her native country as they sought a revival of female cricket. Afghanistan has faced a huge backlash after the Taliban took over and banned female participation in sports, besides curbing their educational rights. However, some of the cricketers managed to escape before the Taliban took over and were in exile Down Under.
Amiri’s family was forced to flee to Pakistan in 2021 before being evacuated to Australia.
“It’s very special for all of us to get back together after three years, leaving everything and losing everything back home in Afghanistan and come together again," Amiri said this week.
