The ongoing 2025 World Para Athletics Championships saw a spectacular moment for Indian javelin as Rinku Hooda soared to gold in the men’s F46 category on Monday (September 29) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. In a memorable 1-2 finish, Sundar Singh Gurjar secured silver, while Ajeet Singh narrowly missed the podium with a fourth-place finish. It was Rinku Hooda's fourth attempt that stole the spotlight — a massive 66.37m throw that set a new championship record. Women's ODI World Cup 2025: Afghanistan's exiled women's team to attend IND vs SL opener

The 2025 Asia Cup was about everything but cricket. Although the two heavyweights played out a nervy final in Dubai, cricket is not what anyone seems to talk about. Why so? Perhaps due to the controversies that marred this edition of the continental event. No one even cared about this eight-team tournament until the BCCI and its counterpart (the PCB) agreed to play together despite recent heightened cross-border tensions. India retaliated to the Pahalgam terror attack with Operation Sindoor a fortnight later, neutralising terrorists and their camps across PoK and Pakistan in precise air strikes, almost leading to a war-like situation. Although a mutual understanding between the two nuclear powers defused the usage of weapons, their relationship turned worse, with India cutting all diplomatic ties with Pakistan. The world number one and US Open champion Alcaraz will face his Laver Cup conqueror, Taylor Fritz, in Tuesday's decider of the Japan Open.

Carlos Alcaraz battled back to beat Casper Ruud 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Monday (Sep 29) in Tokyo and reach his 10th final of a spectacular season, emulating fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal. The world number one and US Open champion Alcaraz will face his Laver Cup conqueror, Taylor Fritz, in Tuesday's decider of the Japan Open. No man, since the legendary Nadal in 2017, has reached 10 finals in a season. Alcaraz has wowed the crowds this week, but he was in danger of being outshone by world number 12 Ruud, who pulled off a series of spectacular winners to take the first set. Alcaraz, who suffered an ankle injury on Thursday in his opener, regained control in the second set before closing out the match with another ferocious display of power-hitting. His opponent in the final will be world number five Fritz, the American who beat the Spanish superstar in San Francisco two weeks ago. Obviously, being able to play another final is always a pleasure," said Alcaraz, who made his ninth straight final going back to Monte Carlo in April. "It's why we're working, trying to make the final in every tournament I’m playing. I'm really happy with the way that I'm feeling on court." Alcaraz picked up from where he left off in his quarter-final win over Brandon Nakashima, pounding Ruud with some huge forehands early in the match. But the Norwegian had a few tricks up his sleeve as well, drawing applause from Alcaraz when he floated a winner to the baseline from a difficult angle. Ruud fought off two break points in the seventh game and went on to hold his serve with a swerving ace down the middle. He broke Alcaraz in the next game and took the first set when the 22-year-old, beginning to show signs of frustration, hit a return long. Alcaraz came back strongly, sending down nine aces in the second set alone to tie up the match. He began to turn on the style and lifted a finger to acknowledge the crowd's applause after hitting a stunning winner midway through the final set. Alcaraz went on to break Ruud in that game and never looked back, sealing victory with another jackhammer forehand. Fritz booked his place in the final with a 6-4, 6-3 win over fellow American Jenson Brooksby. Fritz came into the tournament fresh from notching his first win over Alcaraz at the Laver Cup. England all-rounder Chris Woakes announced his international retirement via social media post on Monday (Sep 29). Woakes, who made headlines during India’s final away Test in the UK for coming out to bat (at no. 11) despite a broken shoulder, called time on his 15-year career. After facing a snub from England's away Ashes squad, with ECB managing director Robert Key also admitting not having him in his plans, the all-rounder decided to step aside. Woakes' final appearance for England was full of heroics, as he walked to loud cheers from the Oval crowd early on day five of the final Test against India; he, however, failed to save his team from a loss as India clinched the thriller to level the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy (2-2). Also read | Chaos in Asia Cup Final: Relive THAT one hour which snatched all attention away from cricket "The moment has come, and I've decided that the time is right for me to retire from international cricket," he said on his Instagram post. "Playing for England was something I aspired to do since I was a kid dreaming in the back garden, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have lived out those dreams. Representing England, wearing the Three Lions and sharing the field with teammates over the last 15 years, many of whom have become lifelong friends, are things I'll look back on with the greatest pride.” Since making his England debut in 2011, Woakes represented his team across formats, winning two World Cups, including the 2019 home ODI WC and England’s second T20 WC three years later in Australia. While he led the pace attack in the 2019 edition, he was the senior-most seamer in his team for the T20 WC in Australia, playing a crucial role in helping England taste success. "Making my debut in 2011 in Australia seems like yesterday, but time flies when you're having fun. Lifting two World Cups and being part of some amazing Ashes series is something I never thought was possible, and those memories and celebrations with my teammates will stay with me forever. "To my Mum and Dad, my wife Amie and our girls Laila and Evie, thank you for your unwavering love, support and sacrifices over the years. None of this would have been possible without you. "To the fans, especially the Barmy Army, thank you for the passion, the cheers and the belief. To my coaches, team-mates and everyone behind the scenes, both with England and Warwickshire, who helped me play for my country - your guidance and friendship has meant the world. "I look forward to continuing to play county cricket and exploring more franchise opportunities in the near future."

Meanwhile, Woakes finished his career with 62 Tests, 122 ODIs, and 33 T20Is to his name, picking up 396 international wickets.

England’s Chris Woakes calls time on international career after Ashes snub

Team India won the 2025 Asia Cup final against Pakistan, beating them by five wickets in Dubai on Sunday evening (Sep 28). Rinku Singh, playing his first game of the tournament, hit the winning runs as the Men in Blue clinched a victory in this nervy final with two balls remaining. However, what transpired after that stole all the attention as cricket seemed to have lost its place in line. Drama, chaos, boos, cheers and everything beyond marred a classic India vs Pakistan final, attracting a billion eyeballs and little embarrassment to the Men in Green. That one hour after Rinku’s one-ball heroics, plenty happened both on and off the field. While the winning team rushed to the dugout to celebrate with their teammates and the support staff, the dejected Pakistani side walked straight to their dressing room, locking themselves in. The Indian players, present at the ground, enjoyed their time taking selfies while giving interviews to the broadcasters, whereas there was no sign of the Salman Agha-led side coming out, leading to a delay in the presentation ceremony. However, it all began when the Indian Team denied receiving the coveted Asia Cup trophy from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi, who also happens to be the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and an interior minister in the serving Pakistani government. The Asia Cup final in Dubai on Sunday (Sep 28) was disappointing for Pakistan as it was not only the tournament that they lost against the Men in Blue but it was also their third consecutive loss to India in three weeks. The Pakistani skipper Salman Ali Agha looked visibly disappointed at the presentation ceremony with the outcome of the match and the team performance, particularly with his batting order. "It is tough one to swallow. We couldn't finish nicely with the bat. Bowling we were outstanding but if we could have finished well, it would have been a different story," said Salman Ali Agha during the presentation ceremony after the loss to India. Speaking further he said, "We need to sort our batting. Our bowling was superb, but our batting is a concern. I am proud of my team, we as a unit are very proud and we have a lot to look forward to." Agha throws Asia Cup runner-up cheque However, what caught the imagination of the crowd present at the stadium and fans watching the game on TV sets across the world was Agha's frustration on losing the match to India. As India prepares for their ICC Women's Cricket World Cup opener against Sri Lanka in Guwahati on Tuesday (September 30), the team is brimming with confidence after a solid performance in their final warm-up match against New Zealand. India sealed a four-wicket win, with Harleen Deol's brilliant knock of 74 runs off 79 balls and Arundhati Reddy’s valuable 2/42 from nine overs being instrumental in their successful chase of 232/8. With nearly 10 overs to spare, Deol's powerful 10 boundaries highlighted India's attacking depth, while Reddy's comeback performance after an injury scare just days earlier offered a boost to the team’s morale. "I wanted to take the game deep and build confidence for the World Cup," Deol was quoted as saying to BCCI TV, acknowledging the importance of the win in bolstering the team's belief. Reddy, who had been carried off the field in a wheelchair after being struck on the knee by a Heather Knight drive in the previous match against England, reflected on the team's preparation. "The injury scare was scary at first, but the medical staff really helped me regain confidence, and I’m glad to be back," she said. Also Read: Asia Cup Final 2025 | 'Pehle humne Sindoor lagaya tha aur ab Tilak': Fans burst with joy as India beat Pakistan India's preparation has been built on a steady series of matches, with a win-loss record of 10-4 in 14 ODIs this year, including a series defeat to Australia. Smriti Mandhana’s explosive starts have been crucial, and alongside the consistent Pratika Rawal and an in-form middle-order, India boasts the depth and flexibility needed to tackle both high targets and chase down stiff totals. However, the team’s key challenge could lie in managing their bowling attack, which, though strong, has had its share of injury setbacks, especially concerning Pooja Vastrakar, Renuka Thakur, and Amanjot Kaur. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted to the victory by calling it "OperationSindoor on the games field", Union minister Kiran Rijiju reacted to pacer Jasprit Bumrah's now-viral 'plane down' gesture. Taking to his x handle Rijiju hailed India's victory against it arch rival and bashed the Men in Green saying, "Pakistan deserves this punishment." What happened during the match Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah gave a ‘fighter jet’ send-off to Haris Rauf after breaking his off stump during the final of the Asia Cup. In the 18th over, Bumrah clean bowled Rauf off a searing Yorker; after which he gave the Pakistani seamer a taste of his own medicine. During this innings, Rauf had scored just six runs, including a lucky boundary off an edge earlier in the same over. Bumrah's gesture came after Rauf during the the Super Four match between the two teams a few days earlier, had mocked Indian fans by making a controversial 'war-related' gesture, rekindling the tensions between the two countries. Why the hostilities between both teams? Early in April this year, several Pakistani-based terrorists killed 26 innocent lives in broad daylight in India’s Kashmir in the most barbaric attack on Indian soil since the 2019 Pulwama bombing. India retaliated with Operation Sindoor a fortnight later, neutralising countless terror camps across PoK and Pakistan in precise air strikes, leading to heightened cross-border tensions. Although a mutual agreement led to a ceasefire, the Indian government cut all diplomatic ties with Pakistan; the two countries and their respective boards, however, agreed to honour multi-team commitments, resulting in India and Pakistan sharing the same group and playing thrice in the 2025 Asia Cup. Despite India and Pakistan facing each other as many as three times in this tournament, the Indian Team boycotted shaking hands with them.

India registered a 5-wicket victory over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 final on Sunday (Sep 29). But, it is Team India's post-match action that has made bigger and better headlines! After the win, Team India refused to accept the trophy from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi, who is also a Pakistani politician. In what may be surely called a crazy twist of events, Naqvi left the premises with the trophy, with Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) now saying that they will lodge a complaint against him.
Why Team India refused to accept trophy from Mohsin Naqvi?
According to reports, Mohsin Naqvi’s distasteful repost of an image on the social media platform X became the first trigger for India to take the decision. In the post shared by Naqvi, Pakistan players were seen fighter suits to the backdrop of fighter jets, with the caption that read, ‘Final Day.’ Earlier, as the tournament progressed, Naqvi had posted a picture of Cristiano Ronaldo depicting a crashing plane. Though, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav shared the stage with Naqvi - who serves as ACC chairman - during the captain's meet ahead of the tournament, the Indian players decided to boycott him later, and were ready to receive the trophy from Vice Chairman of the Emirates Cricket Board Khalid Al Zarooni. But Naqvi insisted and Team India didn't give in. The Indian team during the Asia Cup also refused to shake hands with Pakistani players. The Indian captain did not participate in the photoshoot with the trophy ahead of the final match. Later on Monday (Sep 29), BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia applauded the Indian team for refusing to take the trophy from Naqvi and slammed him for taking the prize away. He added that India's decision was not instantaneous but “deliberate.” Speaking to Network18, Saikia said that the BCCI had already communicated their position that the Indian team would not accept the Asia Cup trophy from Naqvi, as he was not only the ACC chairman but also a senior Pakistani leader. He explained that it was unacceptable for the team to receive an award from someone representing a country that is openly hostile and engaged in conflict with India. According to him, the players were willing to accept the trophy if it had been presented by a neutral ACC or match official. However, when it became clear that Naqvi insisted on doing the presentation himself, the team collectively decided to abstain from the ceremony. “For us, it is not possible to take an award from someone who represents a country that is openly hostile and waging war against India. The BCCI official added that Indian players were ready to take the trophy from a neutral ACC official…When the insistence came that the presentation would be done by Mr. Naqvi himself, the team decided to stay away. That was not an impulsive act — it was a conscious and unanimous decision," Sakia said.
Who is Mohsin Naqvi?
Mohsin Naqvi is a prominent Pakistani politician, media entrepreneur, and cricket administrator. He is the founder of City Media Group, which operates multiple TV channels and a newspaper. In January 2023, he was appointed as the caretaker Chief Minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province. He served as Punjab CM until February 2024. He later became a Senator and was appointed as the Federal Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control in March 2024. In February 2024, he became Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and in April this year, he was chosen as the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
