David Beckham said it was "quite a moment" for a boy from the east end of London to be "here at Windsor Castle, being honoured by His Majesty the King –- the most important and the most respected institution in the world".

Former England football captain David Beckham on Tuesday received his knighthood from King Charles III at Windsor Castle, calling it his "proudest moment". The football star, 50, who played 115 times for England as well as for some of the world's most high-profile clubs including Manchester United and Real Madrid, was knighted for services to sport and charity. Beckham said it was "quite a moment" for a boy from the east end of London to be "here at Windsor Castle, being honoured by His Majesty the King –- the most important and the most respected institution in the world". "This is without doubt my proudest moment," he told the PA news agency. Beckham, known as a stylish dresser, wore a grey suit made by his pop star-turned fashion designer wife Victoria. She accompanied him to the ceremony at Windsor, west of London, along with his parents Ted and Sandra. "He's kind of the most elegantly dressed man that I know, so he inspired quite a few of my looks over the years and he definitely inspired this look. "I've been very obviously lucky in my career to have won what I've won and done what I've done but to receive an honour like this, of a knight, is beyond anything that I ever thought that I would receive," he said. Beckham's knighthood is the culmination of years of tireless efforts to transcend football and turn himself into a global icon at the intersection of sport, fashion and business. He was believed to have been on the verge of receiving a knighthood after helping London win its bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games. But UK authorities placed a red flag on his nomination due to his involvement in an alleged tax avoidance scheme, according to previous reports. He was subsequently cleared. Bayern issued a statement late on Monday saying an official protest had been lodged with governing body UEFA about measures adopted at "short notice" by the Paris police prefecture.

Bayern Munich have lodged a protest with UEFA about "unacceptable" and "surprising" security measures implemented by French police ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash at Paris Saint-Germain. Bayern issued a statement late on Monday saying an official protest had been lodged with governing body UEFA about measures adopted at "short notice" by the Paris police prefecture. The measures, issued on Monday, included requiring all Bayern fan buses to wait outside the city and be accompanied to and from the Parc des Princes by a police escort. The measure also requires all Bayern fans to "travel to the stadium exclusively via public transport". Bayern said fan buses would only be able to leave the Paris region after around 5am local time on Wednesday, despite the match finishing at around 11pm the night before. "For FC Bayern, the short notice of the decree is unacceptable, as all the relevant information has been available for weeks," the statement read. French police came under fire in the aftermath of the 2022 Champions League final, between Real Madrid and Liverpool, held at the Stade de France in the north of the city. The match was overshadowed by a 37-minute delay to kick-off as fans struggled to access the entrances after being funnelled into overcrowded bottlenecks as they approached the stadium. In May of this year, ex-French interior minister Gerald Darmanin apologised to supporters for the police operation around the stadium, saying "we got the measures wrong" and "it was a failure". Darmanin had initially blamed Liverpool fans for the disorder and claimed many had turned up without tickets. Liverpool fans suffered a series of false claims in the aftermath of the chaos. An independent report found UEFA bore "primary responsibility" for the failures which almost led to the match becoming a "mass fatality catastrophe". The report added it was "remarkable" that no one was killed on the night of the final. Real Madrid won the final 1-0. Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer says Bayern Munich know how to "hurt" Paris Saint-Germain as the Bavarians brace for their away clash with the Champions League title-holders on Tuesday. PSG won the Champions League last year at Bayern's Allianz Arena home, thumping Inter Milan 5-0, but the Bavarian giants travel to the Parc des Princes in incredible form. Bayern have won all 15 of their matches in all competitions so far this campaign, setting a record for the best-ever start in Europe's top-five leagues. The 39-year-old captain said his side "don't have any fear" of the French champions, adding: "We love to play against PSG and we're playing to win." Neuer, a two-time Champions League winner with Bayern, said the visitors have a clear plan to rattle PSG. "We are both teams that like to have the ball, that's well-known, and perhaps we don't like to defend much," he said. "There will certainly be opportunities to counter-attack. You have to be wide awake for that, and also try to have a good defensive structure against these strong and fast opponents. "That's exactly how we want to hurt the Parisians." Front-and-centre in Bayern's historic season has been the superb form of England captain Harry Kane. Kane has 22 goals in Bayern's 15-game winning streak but has also been playing a greater creative role in the side, dropping deep to help out in build-up play. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany told reporters Kane's "understanding of the role has evolved" this season. "It's a bit of a mix of creating the conditions for him to do what he does really well, but ensuring he is where he needs to be to score goals," the Belgian said. "Harry has a lot of experience and a good feeling for the game... Harry doesn't have a very different role to last year, but he's evolved in how he sees the role."

Amanjot’s father, Bhupinder Singh, who worked as a carpenter and crafted Amanjot's first cricket bat, shared the emotional moment when he told media that his mother had been aware of her granddaughter's great performance. “Hearing the news of her victory brought her back to life. She opened her eyes when we told her about the win,” he was quoted as saying. The India team beat South Africa by 52 runs in a thrilling final, where Amanjot’s game-changing catch sealed the match for India. It was a moment that became pivotal to India’s success in the 2025 Women’s World Cup, with Bhupinder admitting that had Amanjot missed the catch, the entire game could have turned in South Africa’s favour.

Also Read: The Laura Wolvaardt effect: The heartbeat of South Africa’s World Cup story

Amanjot’s path to fame was not smooth. Starting her cricket journey at the age of 15, she was initially a bowler but was transformed into an all-rounder by coach Nagesh Gupta at his academy in Chandigarh. Bhupinder would take her on his scooter every day to the academy, even when their resources were limited. Bhupinder also shared how Amanjot's grandmother had always supported her, watching her play street cricket, offering encouragement, and ensuring her safety from troublemakers.

Before cricket, Amanjot was an athlete in several sports including hockey, football, and handball. Her early passion for cricket was supported by her family, with her grandmother playing a crucial role in keeping her motivated. Now, after the World Cup win, Bhupinder reflected on the joy of gifting his mother with new hope. “Amanjot is the force behind her recovery,” he said. “It’s all thanks to her hard work and this unforgettable moment in history.”
