Wimbledon 2024: Carlos Alcaraz beats Novak Djokovic in straight sets to defend title

Spain's Carlos Alcaraz beat Serbian Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in straight sets on Sunday (Jul 14) at SW19 to defend his Wimbledon men's singles title. Third-seed Alcaraz had won his maiden Wimbledon title in 2023 after beating Djokovic in the final.

With the win, Alcaraz became only the fourth player in the Open Era to win four grand slams before turning 21. The other three are Boris Becker, Bjorn Borg and Mats Wilander.

He had previously won the US Open 2022 before winning the Championships an year later. He also won the French Open 2024 earlier this year.

Alcaraz also became only the sixth player to win French Open and Wimbledon back-to-back.

The Spaniard didn't break a sweat in winning the first two sets but had to fight hard for the third. Djokovic, the winner of record 24 grand slam titles, took the game to a tiebreaker, but it wasn't enough.

Alcaraz's dominance was clear throughout the match as he created 14 break points and won five of them. Djokovic, in return, could manage to win only one break point in three attempts.

Alcaraz won 13 service games to go with 67 service points while the Serb managed 59 service points in nine service games.

All in all, Alcaraz won 109 points, including 42 receiving points, 19 games. Djokovic was thoroughly outclassed, winning 87 points in total, including 28 receiving points, in the 10 games he won across three sets.

Djokovic, aged 37 and coming back from a knee injury, is having a tough year. The loss meant he has not beaten a top-ten player in the ongoing year and is yet to win a title.

Alcaraz, who's in red-hot form as Djokovic said at the post-match interview, will now feature in upcoming Paris Olympics for his maiden gold.
