USA's Noah Lyles won the men's 100m finals gold by the barest of margins in 9.79 seconds over Jamaica's Kishane Thomas who won a silver. The bronze medal also went to USA's Fred Kerley.

Lyles is the first American athlete (male or female) to win the prestigious 100m event since Justin Gatlin in the 2004 Athens Games.

The race was so closely fought that Lyles won the race by five-thousandths of a second in an absolute thrilling finish in front of thousands of fans. Kerley, on the other hand, on his bronze in 9.81 seconds.

In fourth place was South Africa's Akani Simbine in 9.82 seconds. Defending champion Italy's Marcell Jacobs was fifth with a time of 9.85 seconds. Jacobs was also seen limping post the race.

Botswana's Letsile Tebogo finished sixth in 9.86 seconds and third American of the race Kenny Bednarek finished seventh in 9.88 seconds.

Last was Jamaica's Oblique Seville who finished the race in 9.91 seconds in the event where all racers clocked sub 10-sec time.

The racers and a 69,000-capacity crowd waited in anticipation as the participants took their places and made adjustments.

A light show and booming bass-heavy music kept the crowd entertained as the sprinters made the final adjustments to their starting blocks.

The cameras panned once more and then it was time, the only sound was that of a helicopter's wings whirring overhead.

As soon as the gun went off, the sprinters took off immediately with eventual winner Lyles being a bit slow off the block.

Lyles, however, got the wheels on midway through the race even as Thompson looked to finish on top. Lyles, however, came from behind sprinting and delivering on his promise to win the gold medal.

The result was displayed after a bit as the judges took time to declare the winner from the photo finish.
