India had hoped the Eden Gardens Test would set the tone for a major home series, but instead it has sparked one of the sharpest debates about pitch conditions in years. A three-day, 30-run loss to South Africa — on a surface that offered sharp turn early and excessive seam movement — has unexpectedly placed two towering figures of Indian cricket on opposing sides: Sourav Ganguly and Gautam Gambhir.

In an interview with NDTV, Ganguly, former India captain, ex-BCCI President, and the figure most closely associated with Eden Gardens — delivered a direct critique of the team management’s pitch strategy under head coach Gambhir. “Prepare proper wickets. I hope Gautam is paying attention,” Ganguly was quoted as saying, leaning forward as if addressing his successor. He acknowledged Gambhir’s competitive nature and early success as coach, but insisted that India must stop relying on overly helpful tracks.

Ganguly argued that with a bowling lineup featuring Bumrah, Siraj, Shami, Kuldeep, and Jadeja, India has no need for surfaces engineered to behave unpredictably. He stressed that India’s best chance to dominate at home lies in backing their bowlers while ensuring their batters consistently post 350–400 runs — the foundation, he said, of their wins abroad as well.

Cricket fraternity reacts to SA win

On social media, several former cricketers expressed their amazement at the Proteas' win, which marked their first victory in India in 15 years. AB de Villiers, the South African legend, tweeted, “Crazy good win that! Well done Proteas. I’m speechless.” Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Sreevats Goswami highlighted South Africa's dominance, commenting, “This is why South Africa are World Test Champions. India and the Eden Gardens crowd must be hugely disappointed.” Ravichandran Ashwin also acknowledged the visitors' performance, tweeting, “Huge result for SA. Great game and well played to the Proteas.” Mpumelelo Mbangwa simply tweeted, “INCREDIBLE!! CRAZY EVEN!!!”
