Bangladesh's ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's asylum plea in the United Kingdom has notyet been accepted after the UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy called for a United Nations-led investigation into the South Asian country's turmoil. The foreign secretary did not mention any asylum being provided to Sheikh Hasina.
"All sides now need to work together to end the violence, restore calm, deescalate the situation and prevent any further loss of life," an official readout said.
Hasina is currently in India and a Bangladeshi military aircraft has returned. The Awami League leader, who had been in power for the past 15 years, resigned as prime minister on August 5 after deadly protests.

In an interview with WION, Hasina's US-based son Sajeeb Wazed said thatthe former prime minister is in "good spirits".
Asked if she plans to return to Bangladesh soon, Wazed said: "Absolutely not. She is 77 years old. This was going to be her last term. She was going to retire after this anyway. So they are now hunting our Awami League leaders and the interim government doesn't even include the Awami League, so why would we bother. People have made their choice and they will get the leadership they deserve."
He added: "My family has been through this three times, 3 coups, after this, we are done. We are tired of saving Bangladesh. Bangladesh can handle its own problem now. It's not all our problem."
Meanwhile, reports have emerged that New Delhi has granted Hasina an interim stay in the country following the collapse of her government.

During this period, India will offer comprehensive logistical support as Hasina pursues asylum in the UK, Daily Sun reported.
Her stay in India is approved only temporarily, pending her relocation to Britain.
Hasina sought asylum in the UK, with her sister Rehana, a UK citizen, accompanying her.
Rehana, the younger daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Fazilatun Necha Mujib, is also the younger sister of Sheikh Hasina. Her daughter, Tulip Siddiq, serves as a member of the British Parliament and represents the ruling Labour Party.
