Pakistan has decided to lift a seven-year restriction on banks servicing cryptocurrency-related businesses. This marks one of the most significant financial policy shifts in its recent economic history.
From ban to framework: A controlled re-entry
Under the new framework, the State Bank of Pakistan now allows financial institutions to open accounts for registered Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) and their clients. This effectively brings crypto-linked firms into the formal banking system for the first time since the 2018 ban, when banks were instructed to cut off all services to cryptocurrency businesses. However, the shift stops well short of full legalisation. Banks are still explicitly barred from trading, holding, or investing in virtual assets. Pakistan’s Punjab Assembly adopts resolution recommending Nobel Peace Prize for Shehbaz Sharif, Asim Munir

Former Pakistani Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry has stirred fresh debate over Pakistan’s power dynamics, asserting that real authority currently lies with Army Chief Asim Munir rather than Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Pointing to recent diplomatic developments and remarks by US President Donald Trump, Chaudhry argued that the military’s influence has become increasingly visible on the global stage and Asim Munir, the current Army chief is the “de-facto ruler.” Fawad Chaudhry served as the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting under former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan. He was appointed to this position in August 2018 following the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party's victory, serving until a cabinet reshuffle in April 2019, and was a prominent aide within the Imran Khan government. Pakistan Foreign Ministry on Wednesday (Apr 15) announced that Saudi Arabia has agreed to $3 billion in fresh deposits, with disbursement expected in the coming week. The nation has also agreed to restructure an existing $5 billion facility on more favourable terms, announced Pakistan's Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. The announcement came on the sidelines of the IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, following talks between Aurangzeb and Saudi Finance Minister Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Jadaan. The two had met previously in Islamabad last Friday, though Pakistani authorities deliberately held back from making any public statement until both sides had reached a formal agreement.
Pakistan's financial woes
Pakistan faces a $3.5 billion repayment to the UAE by the end of April. Reports indicate the UAE had been pressing for immediate settlement, while Saudi Arabia and Qatar have together assembled a combined $5 billion buffer to absorb the impact on Pakistan's reserves, which currently stand at roughly $16.4 billion. The government has set a target of reaching approximately $18 billion in reserves, equivalent to around 3.3 months of import cover, by the end of the fiscal year.Aurangzeb also noted that Pakistan had successfully repaid a $1.4 billion Eurobond last week, describing it as a "non-event".

New Delhi: In February, Indians and Pakistanis met in Doha for Track 2 talks even as, officially, the ties between the two countries remain frosty. The Doha round was not the first in recent months, but it comes at a time when ties remain cold, as India remains concerned over cross-border terrorism supported by Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack. For India and Pakistan, the backchannel track 2 has been continuing for decades. At one point, nearly 20 such dialogues ran simultaneously. Inputs from these help make an assessment when ties remain snapped, as they are currently. No breakthrough is expected from such engagement, but it is seen as a channel of informal communication away from public glare. No press releases are issued, no statements are made after these meetings, and above all, no one will confirm or deny them. The Neemrana Dialogue has been, in the past, one of the longest-running dialogues, bringing together voices from both sides. Track 2 is not new. The term, coined in 1981 by American diplomat Joseph Montville, describes informal, non-structured talks between non-officials, often former officials, journalists, business leaders, and civil society voices. The goal is to build trust, test ideas, and create space for understanding, away from the glare of politics and media. Unlike Track 1, formal government-to-government negotiations like the Camp David Accords, Track 2 offers deniability and flexibility. A hybrid version, Track 1.5, mixes serving officials (acting unofficially) with outsiders. This pattern repeats globally when relations sour. For example, the Oslo Accords, the initial phase (1993), when unofficial meetings in Norway between Israeli academics and PLO representatives took place. After the deadly 2020 Galwan Valley clash, India and China froze much official contact. But Track 2 exchanges helped keep lines open. Pakistan’s former high commissioner to India, Abdul Basit, has raised fresh concerns about regional security even as there is no let-up in tensions amid the ongoing Iran War by stating that Pakistan could strike India if it faces an existential threat from the US. Afghan authorities reported that at least 400 people were killed and more than 250 injured, most of them vulnerable patients receiving treatment. Rescue teams continued to search the rubble for days, pulling bodies from collapsed buildings amid reports of intense fires. India’s response was swift and focused on humanitarian support. Dr Sharafat Zaman Amar, spokesperson for Afghanistan’s health ministry, confirmed receipt of the supplies, noting they were provided directly to aid recovery efforts at affected facilities.
