Davos: Pakistan’s decision to join US President Donald Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ on Gaza shows the country’s perennial struggle to balance strong public sympathy for Palestinians with strategic ties to Washington. It is already causing considerable unease at home. The Board of Peace, unveiled by Trump last week during the World Economic Forum in Davos, forms part of his broader plan to stabilise Gaza following years of conflict. It aims to provide oversight for post-ceasefire reconstruction, security arrangements, and diplomatic efforts, with members including Pakistan. The initiative has drawn criticism for sidelining direct Palestinian representation in its framework. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, along with Pakistan’s field marshal Asim Munir and Foreign Minister Dar were present at the inaugural ceremony of board, chaired by President Trump at Davos. Key opposition party, Imran Khan’s PTI, said Pakistan’s “participation in any international peace initiative should complement and reinforce the United Nations’ multilateral system”. Questions have been raised if the board of peace is trying to replace the UN. But for Pakistan’s history, the approach fits a familiar pattern. Pakistan has historically framed itself as a staunch defender of Muslim causes, including Palestine, yet pragmatic calculations often prevail. After 9/11, Islamabad became a key US ally in the “war on terror”, reaping economic benefits while facing domestic backlash. Earlier, during Jordan’s 1970 Black September conflict, Pakistani military advisers were reportedly involved in operations against Palestinian factions, a chapter rarely acknowledged officially. When it comes to Afghanistan ties, Pakistan has given a blank cheque to the US in dealing with Kabul in the past. The action remains a sore point in ties. Pakistan’s attack on Kabul and Afghanistan’s border areas, in which women, children and cricketers were killed has only worsened ties between the two neighbours. Gaza board membership risks widening the gap between state policy and street sentiment. Protests and social media outrage have already emerged, with some labelling the move hypocritical or a betrayal of principled solidarity. For now, Pakistan’s involvement grants diplomatic visibility and a channel to Washington without committing to positions. Whether it translates into meaningful leverage for Palestinians, or merely serves Islamabad’s need to appear moderate and useful, remains uncertain. Sooner or later, Trump will be seeking his pound of flesh from Rawalpindi.

An audio clip has appeared in which Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief and founder Masood Azhar is apparently trying to flex muscle by claiming that a big number of suicide bombers are ready to strike. However, neither the authenticity nor the time of the audio’s recording could be independently verified. Azhar makes sweeping claims in the audio about his cadre, saying they are not “one, two, or a hundred, not even a thousand”, and goes on to boast that revealing the actual number would cause an uproar in global media. Indian strikes had reduced multiple terror sites to rubble. Around 10 of Azhar’s relatives, including his sister, her husband, a nephew, a niece, and children from his extended family, were killed in the strike on the Bahawalpur facility. His several aides also died in the pre-dawn attack.

An audio clip has appeared in which Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief and founder Masood Azhar is apparently trying to flex muscle by claiming that a big number of suicide bombers are ready to strike. The audio purportedly in the voice of Masood Azhar has surfaced on social media platforms, in which he claims that the outfit has “thousands” of suicide bombers ready to carry out attacks. He further claims that these recruits only seek “shahadat” (martyrdom) and do not want any material rewards or personal gains. Also Read: ‘No more Venezuelan oil or money’: Trump warns Cuba to make a deal before it is ‘too late’ The audio appears to be more of a rant than a credible threat since Indian forces had struck Jaish establishments inside Pakistan, including its headquarters in Bahawalpur, in which several of Azhar’s close relatives were also killed. Jaish had indirectly acknowledged these losses in September last year when a senior commander of the terror outfit admitted in a video that members of Azhar’s family were killed during India’s strike on Bahawalpur. The strike under Operation Sindoor was part of India’s response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam in which 26 innocent civilians were brutally killed by terrorists. India has blocked the social media handles of Pakistan's state-backed "Asia One" news outlet, which has been spreading anti-India propaganda. Asia One, launched after the India-Pakistan conflict of May 2025, after the Pahalgam terror attack by Pakistan-trained terrorists, was seen as part of Pakistan's information warfare and was used to spread misinformation. Many of its correspondents have been regularly churning out anti-India misinformation. A recent report by the channel was fact-checked by India's Foreign Ministry.
