India's Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday (Jan 15) authorised the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to prosecute former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) for his alleged involvement in money laundering related to the liquor scam case, Indian media reported citing official sources.
The ED also got a nod to initiate prosecution against former deputy CM Manish Sisodia in the case.
The development comes as both leaders of the Aam Admi Party (AAP) are out on bail.
The Supreme Court ordered Kejriwal to be released in September 2024 and Sisodia was released in August.
The move also comes following the Supreme Court's ruling on November 6 that the ED must obtain prior sanction, just like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), to prosecute under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).&nbsp;
This sanction is required for prosecution under section 197 (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code, now known as section 218 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
The ruling had put the framing of charges against Kejriwal in the excise policy case on hold, as the Delhi court awaited the necessary sanction.&nbsp;

The federal probe agency had arrested Kejriwal from his official residence in March, last year. He was released on bail in September.
The arrest was made in the case pertaining to alleged corruption and money laundering in formulating and executing the Delhi government's excise policy.&nbsp;
The Delhi government had implemented the policy on November 17, 2021.
But it was scrapped at the end of September 2022.
Corruption allegations were levelled against AAP, which the party has repeatedly denied.
The investigating agencies have said that the profit margins of wholesalers were increased from five per cent to 12 per cent under the new policy.&nbsp;
The agencies have alleged that the new policy resulted in cartelisation and those ineligible for liquor licences were favoured for monetary benefits.

Indian Army Day 2025: Pune hosts parade for the first time with the theme 'Samarth Bharat, Saksham Sena'

Dense fog gripped Delhi, Noida, and other places in the national capital region (NCR)&nbsp; on Wednesday morning (Jan 15) amid intense cold wave conditions in northern India. The visibility was reduced to zero, causing disruptions in train, flight, and road travel.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an &lsquo;orange alert&rsquo; for Delhi as &lsquo;dense to very dense&rsquo; fog is expected in many parts. As the cold wave intensifies, the weather department has also forecast light rain or drizzle in Delhi. Fog conditions are expected to continue during evening and night.

Due to dense fog conditions, 184 flights were delayed while at least seven were cancelled due to reduced visibility as dense fog engulfed the national capital on Wednesday (Jan 15) morning.
The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) issued an advisory, urging passengers to check flight schedules as the fog conditions may lead to delays or disruptions in the operations at the airport.

The Delhi police revealed that the family of a teen allegedly involved in sending the bomb threats works with a non-profit organisation (NGO) that "had connections with a political party".&nbsp;
BJP slammed AAP over having &ldquo;deep bonds&rdquo; with the NGOs that have opposed hanging Afzal Guru, a convict of the 2001 Indian Parliament attack.
&ldquo;All of us know that AAP has deep bonds with such NGOs who have opposed Afzal Guru's hanging. In February 2015, the &lsquo;tukde-tukde&rsquo; slogans were raised on Afzal Guru's death anniversary and the AAP kept the file closed for months... Who are the people of these NGOs and are they related to the Aam Aadmi Party?... Both of the parents of Delhi CM Atishi supported the clemency petition of Afzal Guru,&rdquo; BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said.
He also demanded party leader Arvind Kejriwal to come forward and clarify the connections AAP has with the accused NGO.
"There seems to be a direct connection between these two... Is the AAP involved in this?... I ask Arvind Kejriwal to come forward and AAP should clarify what their relation is with these people... If juveniles are doing this, then what kind of venom are these NGOs injecting into the minds of the children of the country?... We want a clear answer from the AAP... If they don't give a clear answer, that deepens the doubt...," he added.
Now AAP has retaliated, saying that the opposition was "politicising" the event and was using the incident for its own gains.
"You (BJP) are politicising the issue of school children getting threats... The first threat was given in May 2024. After almost 9 months now, the Delhi police have given no statement but the BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi is holding a press conference. He is telling stories of different NGOs, he knows everything... There was no investigation for 10 months but now 15 days before the elections, they are narrating fabricated stories...," AAP MP Sanjay Singh said.

<h2>What did the Delhi police say?</h2>
The Delhi police on Tuesday said that the Class 12th student who was held for allegedly sending bomb threat emails to over 400 schools in Delhi was linked to an NGO that was linked to a political party.
"We were tracking e-mails and because of a virtual private network (VPN), it was difficult to track the origins. We also had to ascertain whether there was a terror angle to it," Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Oder) Madhup Tewari said at a press conference, according to news agency PTI reports.
"Our teams tracked the minor after recent e-mails on January 8. As the e-mail sender was a juvenile, the team took his laptop and mobile phone for a forensic examination," Tewari said.
&ldquo;The emails were sent in a very sophisticated manner, including the use of VPNs. Hence, we had difficulties in tracing the emails," he further added.

Maha Kumbh 2025: From 1st Amrit Snan to 30 million devotees, everything on Day 2 of world's largest gathering

The special investigation team (SIT) of Kerala police probing the sensational case of alleged sexual abuse of a teen girl in the Pathanamthitta district has arrested 44 people so far in connection with the matter, a senior police officer of the district said on Tuesday.
DIG S Ajeetha Begum, who is overseeing the investigation, said that 30 FIRs have been registered in connection with the alleged sexual assault of the girl, and out of the 59 accused mentioned in the cases, 44 have been arrested.
"Two of the accused are absconding. They are abroad at present. We are considering issuing Look out Circulars for them. We are also planning to issue a Red Corner notice for them through Interpol," the officer told TV channels.
Besides them, 13 more have to be arrested, she said.
"We are searching for their locations. They will be arrested soon. A foolproof and scientific investigation will be carried out by the SIT. We will not spare any of the accused. There will be no compromise. We will bring all of them before the law," the officer said.
The investigation so far has revealed that several of the accused met the girl at a private bus stand in Pathanamthitta. She was then taken to various locations in vehicles and subjected to abuse, police said.
The probe also found that the girl, while she was studying class XII last year, was taken by a youth who was acquainted with her through Instagram to a rubber plantation in Ranni, where he raped her along with three others.
Police said the investigation revealed she was gang-raped on at least five occasions, including incidents inside a car and at the Pathanamthitta General Hospital in January 2024.
The girl, who is now 18 years old, has alleged in her complaint that she was sexually abused by 62 individuals since the age of 13.
The matter came to light during counselling conducted by the Child Welfare Committee, after the victim's teachers at an educational institution informed the panel about noticeable changes in her behaviour.
The Committee, subsequently notified the police, and an investigation is on.
The SIT had been formed to conduct a comprehensive probe into the incident, with Pathanamthitta Deputy SP P S Nandakumar leading the team under the supervision of District Police Chief V G Vinod Kumar.
The team comprises over 30 police officers, including women, from various ranks and stations.
DIG Ajitha Beegam said that once the Sabarimala pilgrimage season gets over, more officers will be included in the SIT.

Kerala minor girl rape: 44 arrested, police to seek Interpol notice for two accused abroad

The Rajasthan High Court on Tuesday granted interim bail till March 31 to self-styled godman Asaram, who is serving life imprisonment in a 2013 rape case.

The petition in the HC filed by Asaram for suspension of sentence and bail was heard on Monday.
Asaram's lawyer R.S. ​​Saluja said to mediapersons that while hearing the petition, the court granted interim bail to Asaram till March 31.
He was arrested by Jodhpur police from his ashram in Madhya Pradesh's Indore in 2013. Since then, he has been in jail.
After a trial of five years, on April 25, 2018, the court sentenced Asaram to life imprisonment. Now, after 11 years, he will be out of jail on interim bail.
The terms and conditions set by the court include that Asaram cannot meet his followers and will not try to tamper with the evidence in the case.
Three guards will accompany him, whose expenses will have to be borne by Asaram.
Earlier on January 7, the Supreme Court had granted medical bail to Asaram till March 31, 2025, in the case of the rape of a female follower in the Surat ashram. While giving the verdict on the bail, the Supreme Court had said that Asaram could not meet his followers. The court had clarified that the relief was granted solely on humanitarian grounds and directed compliance with conditions imposed during the bail period.

Asaram did not get relief in the Jodhpur rape case. After this, his lawyer filed a petition in the High Court, which gave him relief.
The self-styled godman has been held guilty in two cases in Jodhpur Court and Gandhinagar Court.
He was arrested by Jodhpur Police from the Indore ashram on September 2, 2013. A woman from the ashram in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, had filed a rape case against him. On January 31, 2023, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment in this case.

The Delhi Police revealed that the family of a teen, involved in sending bomb threats to as many as 400 schools, works with a non-profit organisation (NGO) that "had connections with a political party". The class 12 student of a private school in India's national capital was nabbed on January 8 for allegedly sending <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/india-police-arrests-class-12-student-over-delhi-school-bomb-scares-8607141">hoax emails</a> to 400 schools since February 2024. The investigation revealed that the detained student sent the threat emails to avoid school exams.&nbsp;

He revealed that he became a monk to understand himself and the divine better. He also changed his name to Masani Gorakh and dedicated his life to Lord Shiva in devotion. He also goes by other names like Raghav and Jagdish, he added.

Hailing from Haryana, Masani Gorakh studied aerospace engineering for four years at IIT Bombay. He then changed his field and pursued a Masters degree in Design and worked in photography. He also taught Physics to some students in the meantime.
In a pursuit to &ldquo;understand the meaning of life,&rdquo; the IITian Baba then started studying about Post-Modernism, Socrates, and Plato. He then went back home and focused on &ldquo;basic things&rdquo;.

According to the Indian Army officials, an inquiry has been initiated by the Indian Army into the incident to find out the cause of the blast.

We somehow managed in 2024, but it also gave us a lesson that if it continues in the year 2025, we will need some plan of action. The precipitation and snowfall are not in our hands, and we witnessed low water levels. We have made a drought action plan, as the lift irrigation schemes are the most affected as the sump tanks are at certain levels of the river. Last year, we couldn&rsquo;t lift water as the levels had depleted, but this year, we have made a plan of planting drought pumps and lifting the river water to put in sumps and deliver it to farmers,&rdquo; said Braham Jyoti Sharma, Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control.

Jammu and Kashmir records least rainfall in 50 years, Jhelum level lowest ever

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Tuesday (Jan 14) said that India was &ldquo;incomplete&rdquo; as a country without Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), dubbing the territory &lsquo;foreign&rsquo; for Islamabad. Singh also issued a warning to Pakistan against operating terrorist training camps in the region.
"Jammu and Kashmir is incomplete without PoK. PoK is nothing more than a foreign territory for Pakistan... PoK's land is being used to run the business of terrorism. Terrorist training camps are being run in PoK... Pakistan will have to destroy them otherwise," Singh was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. The minister was speaking at the 9th Armed Forces Veterans' Day event in Akhnoor city of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
During his speech, Rajnath Singh also criticised the 1965 government of then-PM Lal Bahadur Shastri for not trying to convert the victory against Pakistan into a &ldquo;strategic advantage.&rdquo;
"Cross-border terrorism would have ended in 1965 itself, but the then central government was unable to convert the tactical advantage gained in the war into a strategic advantage," Singh added, citing the 1965 war.

Taking to his official X account, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey said that he would send summons to Meta and would also call upon the tech company to apologise to India&rsquo;s Parliament.

Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) national convener and former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday (Jan 13) hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by accusing it of betraying Jats of the national capital over the issue of reservation.
A report by the news agency PTI said that Kejriwal met a delegation of Jat leaders at his residence.
In a post on X, Kejriwal said that the delegation expressed anger over being betrayed by the BJP on the issue of reservation for the last decade and the injustice done to them.&nbsp;

<h2>'When will Modi and Shah...?'</h2>
Speaking to reporters, Kejriwal said that Jats (in Delhi) were part of Delhi's Other Backward Classes (OBC) list but were not a part of the central government's list. &nbsp;
&ldquo;Jats from Rajasthan can get admissions in the Delhi University and its colleges, jobs in the AIIMS, Safdarjung Hospital and all the central government organisations but not the Jats of Delhi,&rdquo; Kejriwal said.

<h2>Kejriwal writes to Modi on the issue</h2>
Last week, Kejriwal wrote to Prime Minister Modi, accusing him of breaking promises made to Jats over their inclusion in the central government's OBC list.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I am writing this letter to remind you of a promise you made 10 years ago on an important issue. I met several representatives of the Jat community of Delhi in the last few days. All of them expressed concern over the neglect of the Jat community of Delhi in the OBC list of the Centre,&rdquo; the letter stated.

Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) national convener and former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday (Jan 13) hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by accusing it of betraying Jats of the national capital over the issue of reservation. A report by the news agency PTI said that Kejriwal met a delegation of Jat leaders at his residence. Jats in Delhi account for a significant chunk of votes in some assembly constituencies, especially in the outer Delhi areas. 'When will Modi and Shah...?' Speaking to reporters, Kejriwal said that Jats (in Delhi) were part of Delhi's Other Backward Classes (OBC) list but were not a part of the central government's list. “Jats from Rajasthan can get admissions in the Delhi University and its colleges, jobs in the AIIMS, Safdarjung Hospital and all the central government organisations but not the Jats of Delhi,” Kejriwal said. Kejriwal writes to Modi on the issue Last week, Kejriwal wrote to Prime Minister Modi, accusing him of breaking promises made to Jats over their inclusion in the central government's OBC list. “I am writing this letter to remind you of a promise you made 10 years ago on an important issue. I met several representatives of the Jat community of Delhi in the last few days. All of them expressed concern over the neglect of the Jat community of Delhi in the OBC list of the Centre,” the letter stated. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won India&rsquo;s 2024 general election, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi securing a third consecutive term in office. However, Zuckerberg said during the podcast that this was not the case. 
Zuckerberg said, "2024 was a big election year around the world. All these countries, like India, had elections. The incumbents basically lost every single one. There is some sort of a global phenomenon &ndash; whether it was because of inflation or the economic policies to deal with Covid or just how the governments dealt with Covid - seems to have had this global effect...There was a broad decrease in trust in incumbents and maybe in these sorts of democratic institutions overall."
<h2>'Factually incorrect'</h2>
In response, Vaishnaw said, "As the world&rsquo;s largest democracy, India conducted the 2024 elections with over 640 million voters. The people of India reaffirmed their trust in the NDA led by PM Narendra Modi's leadership. Mr. Zuckerberg&rsquo;s claim that most incumbent governments, including India in the 2024 elections, lost post-COVID is factually incorrect."

Let&rsquo;s uphold facts and credibility," Vaishnaw wrote on X.

This decision has sparked widespread backlash, with countries like Australia and Brazil labeling it a threat to democracy and mental health.
