Tabling the Bill in the Upper House, Rijiju said the proposed legislation has nothing to do with religion but deals only with properties. The bill was examined and redrafted by a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).&nbsp;
Rijiju said that the Bill aims to include all the Muslim sects in the Waqf board and there were 4.9 lakh Waqf properties in 2004, which have now increased to 8.72 lakh. Rijiju said it aims to accomplish the unfulfilled tasks of the previous governments as he sought the opposition's support to pass the Bill.&nbsp;

Parliament clears Waqf (Amendment) Bill after intense debate, PM Modi calls it 'watershed moment'

The Rajya Sabha early Friday adopted a Statutory Resolution confirming the imposition of President's Rule in strife-torn Manipur with members across party lines supporting the decision.
Even though opposition members slammed the Centre for its failure to restore law and order in the state and control violence, the government said it was making all efforts to bring normalcy in the state, asserting that its policy was not to impose President's Rule in states.
Speaking at the end of the discussion on the resolution, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said a meeting between the two communities from Manipur is likely to take place in the national capital soon.
Shah informed the House that two meetings between the communities had already taken place in Manipur while the House was in session.
"...We are investing our efforts to bring peace back in Manipur. Thirteen meetings have happened. We brought up the subject late as meetings were going on. The next meeting is in the offing and the issue will see its resolution soon," the minister said. "The path to communication is open... We don't use this for political mileage," Shah added. He accused the Congress and other parties of trying to spread misinformation as there was "zero violence" in Manipur.
The minister claimed that on February 11, the Manipur chief minister had resigned and as the news broke, the Congress brought a no-confidence against him even though it did not have the numbers. "I want to set the record straight. There was no no-confidence motion against the Manipur government. The Congress did not have the required numbers. They were not in a position to bring a no-confidence motion and the chief minister of Manipur had resigned," Shah said.
He said after the resignation of former chief minister N Biren Singh, no other party, including the Congress which has five MLAs, staked claim and President's Rule was imposed.
Though he admitted that 260 lives were lost in Manipur in the ethnic strife, he said the majority of people were killed in the first week of violence. He said talks were on with both, Meitei and Kuki, communities for a peaceful solution.
Shah also attacked the opposition for "politicising" the violence and said similar incidents took place in the state during the Congress regime, when no prime minister visited the state Seven years ago, he said, a 225-day curfew was imposed in Manipur. Even in those days of the Congress regime, no prime minister visited Manipur, he claimed.
Referring to his "Communist friends" objection to the prime minister not visiting the state, Shah said, "I don't understand what is the problem. Are they trying to safeguard Naxalism or violence in Manipur." Shah said they should be competent enough to differentiate between ethnic strife in Manipur and the problem of Naxalism. These problems are not the same, they are different, he asserted.
The home minister accused the TMC of following "dual standards," claiming that 250 lives were lost in the post-poll violence in West Bengal alone and the state took no action in the Sandeshkhali and RG Kar Hospital incidents.
"We are not supporting any gender crime happening in Manipur. We will deal with that. You could not deal with what was happening in West Bengal," he said.
Shah said the northeast has a history of ethnic struggle, but the BJP never "politicised" it.
In 1993, he said, the Naga-Kuki strife broke out and continued till 1998, claiming 750 lives.
But, the then PM did not visit the region, he claimed.
Shah said such struggles take time to cool off and many a time five years have taken for normalcy to return.
Earlier, initiating the discussion on a statutory resolution on the imposition of President's Rule in Manipur, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit strife-torn Manipur at the earliest to restore order.
Kharge said the Modi government failed to govern the northeastern state despite having a majority there. "For nearly two years, Manipur has been burning and the government has totally failed in stopping the violence," he said.
He alleged that the BJP's "double-engine" government promised stability, but instead, delivered "bloodshed, division, and economic collapse" to the state.
"I would urge the prime minister to visit Manipur, meet the affected people resolve their issues and set right the law and order situation there," he said.
The Congress leader also demanded a thorough inquiry into the violence in Manipur and also a white paper tabled in the Parliament on the matter.

<h2>What is Operation Brahma?</h2>
Operation Brahma is a disaster relief and humanitarian effort launched by the Government of India to aid Myanmar. It has been launched to provide necessary support, including Search and Rescue (SAR), humanitarian aid, disaster relief and medical assistance, following the devastating earthquake.
Under it, the Indian Army has set up a Field Hospital, which is offering both immediate treatment and long-term care solutions to those impacted.

Apart from the field hospital, India's National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is actively engaged in the affected areas. Deputy Commander Kunal Tiwari, leading the NDRF team, told ANI: "Our team has a total 80 members. We have four canines and heavy team equipment like rigging, lifting, cutting, and bridging. Our team is fully equipped."

"Unfortunately, one pilot succumbed to his injuries, while the other is receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Jamnagar. The IAF deeply regrets the loss of life and stands firmly with the bereaved family. A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident," it added.
The fighter jet crashed at around 9.30 pm on Wednesday at an open field in Suvarda village, 12 km from Jamnagar city, and caught fire, police earlier said.
While the police found one pilot in an injured state at the spot, a search operation was launched to find the second one, who went missing after the crash, Jamnagar district Superintendent of Police Premsukh Delu said on Wednesday.
The injured pilot was then taken to the government-run GG Hospital in the city, he said.
District Collector Ketan Thakkar, who also rushed to the spot after the incident, said the blaze engulfed the open field after the crash and was later doused by firefighters.

The political level is fully engaged with regular contacts at the Ministerial level", the ambassador explained. He added, "EU FTAs are fully WTO compliant. They are positive and respected in the long term." The India EU summit will take place later this year in India, even as Brussels &amp; Delhi come closer with aim to diversify to new markets. Both sides held the 10th round of FTA talks in March in Brussels as they worked to address key asks and respective sensitivities. Giving his assessment on the talks, he said, " India-EU have made good progress in recent rounds on some aspects. The trade pact aims to deepen economic ties between India and the European Union, two of the world’s largest markets. The comments by the top EU diplomat to India comes at a time when US President Donald Trump plans to give details on his reciprocal tariffs, which many fear could dramatically impact the current global trading order. Ambassador Delphin pointed out that the, "global environment is accelerating negotiations" and while "reciprocal tariffs by US strengthens rationale for an India-EU FTA talks but it will not define them". "First of all, no non-Muslim would come into the Waqf. Understand this clearly...There is no such provision to include any non-Muslim among those who manage the religious institutions; we do not want to do this," the union minister added.

"One more misconception is being spread, that this is coming with a retrospective effect. Speak with responsibility when you speak in this House. The Bill clearly states that the Law will come into effect after the notification is issued by the Government when the Bill is passed. So, there is no retrospective effect. But Muslims are being scared."

Kiren Rijiju said the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, proposes to repeal Section 40 of the 1995 Act, as it gives the boards power to decide on a property. Calling the section the most draconian law, Rijiju said this has now been done away with.
&ldquo;It gave the power to Waqf Boards to declare any property as its own. Now, it will no longer be the case,&rdquo; he pointed out.
Section 40 allowed the Waqf Board to declare any property as Waqf. Once a property was designated as Waqf, ownership was transferred from the individual to the board, rendering it almost irrevocable. The irrevocability has led to various disputes, including the Bengaluru Eidgah ground, claimed as Waqf property, and the Surat Municipal Corporation building, which is claimed due to its historical use as a 'sarai' during the Mughal era.

If we had not introduced this amendment today, even the Parliament building we are sitting in could have been claimed as Waqf property. Sector-10 Police Station SHO Rambir Singh spoke to news agency ANI and said, "We received a call of a fire. The force reached and called the fire brigade. 4-5 fire vehicles have left after being emptied. There is no casualty so far but there is financial loss to the company."
