The Hyderabad Central University (HCU) has been at the centre of controversy for the past few days as 400 acres of land near the campus is being auctioned off. The land in Kancha Gachibowli was taken over by excavators and other heavy equipment over the weekend after orders to clear the land.
Students have been protesting against the action on the land, saying it would disturb the biodiversity of the region. They are demanding that the government safeguard the land, which they say belongs to the university. According to the protesting student, more than 450 species of flora &amp; fauna reside in the region and&nbsp;would suffer if the land was razed.
Now, videos from the site are going viral, showing diggers and excavators clearing the land even as peacocks cry out, seemingly in angst of losing their home. Social media users were disturbed after hearing the cries of the agonising peacocks.&nbsp;

The user stated, "Mr revanth reddy was so harsh towards actor Allu Arjun few days back when that woman lost her life and now when he is the reason for the death of so many life&rsquo;s, who should be behind the bars."
"Allu Arjun was taken immediately behind the bars for one life and what should be done with you for taking so many lives&hellip; seriously if butcher has a face it&rsquo;s you only&hellip;" the woman added.
Others questioned the absence of "5-star environment activists and celebrities" in the face of such a tragedy.

Meanwhile, Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC) claims that "development works and auction of the land will not affect the ecosystem, including rocks." It added that "no lake exists in the land allotted for development."
"Buffalo Lake and Peacock Lake are not within the limits of the 400 acres being developed by the TGIIC. False reports have been published in a section of the media on this particular issue," TGIIC said in a statement.
The Telangana government asserted on Monday that the land belonged to the government and that HCU did not possess any land in the project area. The land was previously allotted to a private company 21 years ago, after which the government acquired it through a legal battle.

It is to be noted that there is no waqf system in Islamic countries like Turkey, Libya, Jordan, Tunisia, and Egypt, but the waqf network in India is extensive and legally protected. Over the years, there have been many concerns like misuse of power by mutawallis, poor maintenance of property accounts, weak coordination with revenue departments, encroachments, and sweeping authority granted to boards to claim properties. The Waqf Act was first passed by Parliament in 1954. It was later repealed, and a new Waqf Act was passed in 1995, which gave more powers to the Waqf Boards. The bill was referred to a joint parliamentary committee (JPC), headed by Jagdambika Pal, which submitted its 655-page report to both Houses of Parliament. <h2>Waqf Boards are third largest landowners in India</h2>
Waqf boards currently control 8.7 lakh properties spread across 9.4 lakh acres, with an estimated value of ₹1.2 lakh crore. The Boards are also the country&rsquo;s biggest landowners after the Armed Forces and Indian Railways. Of the 8.7 lakh waqf assets, 356,051 are registered as waqf estates, 872,328 are immovable properties, and 16,713 are movable properties. Despite this, the Boards generate negligible income.
<h2>&lsquo;Waqf properties could yield ₹12,000 crore annually&rsquo;: Sachar panel</h2>
The Sachar Committee, which submitted its report in 2006, observed that if the waqf properties are put to efficient and marketable use, they can generate at least a minimum revenue of 10% which is about ₹12,000 crores per annum. It also recommended various measures to improve the management of waqf, like regulating the functioning of mutawallis, inclusion of non-Muslim technical expertise in management, and of two women members in Central Waqf Board and each State Waqf Board, etc.
<h2>Major disputes, claims by Waqf Boards</h2>
The systemic issues and flaws in waqf property governance have resulted in several cases across India. In one such case, one Rajagopal, a farmer in Tamil Nadu&rsquo;s Thiruchenthurai village, was unable to sell his agricultural land to repay a loan after the Waqf Board laid claim to the entire village. The sale required a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the board, leading to both financial and emotional distress. Records indicate the village was donated as waqf by Nawab Anwardeen Khan in 1956. The situation worsened when the board requested the registration department to assign a &lsquo;zero value&rsquo; to all waqf properties. The Ministry of Minority Affairs intervened and stayed the request to allow property transactions.

The property later came under British control and was eventually transferred to the Indian government after independence, but the Gujarat Waqf Board reiterated its legal position with the statement: &ldquo;Once a Waqf, always a Waqf.&rdquo; In an even more unusual claim in Devbhoomi Dwarka, the Waqf Board attempted to assert ownership over two islands in Bet Dwarka. The Gujarat High Court was perplexed by the petition and asked the Board to revise it. The judge questioned how the Waqf could claim &lsquo;land in Krishnanagri&rsquo;.
<h2>What is the opposition&rsquo;s stand?</h2>
The opposition has strongly criticised the bill, calling it &lsquo;unconstitutional&rsquo; and accusing BJP of trying to &lsquo;snatch&rsquo; the rights of Muslims. Congress attacked the BJP-led Union government, alleging it was taking the country towards civil war.

As the new financial year kicks in, traffic authorities have warned that pending fines might lead to penalties including suspension of driving license, according to reports.
<h2>What are the new traffic rules?</h2>
Under the new traffic regulations that have come into force starting April 1, driving licences can be suspended for three months if e-challans remain unpaid for over three months. Additionally, if an individual has three challans for red light violations or rash driving, then their licence might be suspended for three months. To make the laws stricter, the government is considering higher insurance premiums for vehicle owners with at least two pending challans from the previous financial year.
The government, however, has acknowledged that sometimes challans are not paid due to technical error or late notifications. To tackle this, the government will come up with a comprehensive operating procedure.

The crackdown by the government started after lower rate of recovery of e-challans was reported. Reportedly, only 40 per cent of fines via e-challans have been collected.&nbsp;
As per reports, Delhi has the lowest recovery rate for challans at 14 per cent, followed by Karnataka at 21 per cent, and Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh at 27 per cent. States like Odisha, Rajasthan, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Haryana show relatively higher recovery rates between 62per cent and 76per cent, the report added.
The draft rules in this regard were made after the Supreme Court order directed 23 states and seven UTs to file compliance reports indicating the implementation of electronic monitoring as provided in the Central Motor Vehicles Act.&nbsp;
A bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan in January this year noted that only five states and a UT - West Bengal, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Delhi - had filed their compliance reports.&nbsp;

<h2>What more is the government planning regarding e-challans?</h2>
As per a TOI report, in order to streamline the process, the government has advised the agencies to make sure that e-challan notice is sent to a driver or vehicle owner within three days. Post this, the recipient needs to accept and pay the fine in 30 days or challenge it before the grievance authority is concerned. No action in 30 days would mean acceptance of fault, and non-payment in 90 days, will lead to suspension of driving licence (DL) or registration certificate (RC), till payment is made, the report added.

<h3>Heavier penalties nationwide in place from March 1</h3>
Harsher motor vehicle fines have been implemented, signalling a zero-tolerance approach to traffic violations from March 1 this year.
The new penalties include:

</ul>
A fine of ₹10,000 and/or six months in jail for the first offence. Repeat offenders face a ₹15,000 fine and up to two years in prison.
Earlier the fine for drunken driving was ₹1,000 to ₹1,500.

</ul>
Riding without a helmet will now cost ₹1,000 and will also lead to the scrapping of driving licence for three months. Not wearing a seat belt also carries a ₹1,000 fine.

Triple Riding Two-wheelers
Triple riding on two-wheelers will result in a ₹1,000 fine. Earlier the fine was only ₹100.

As per a HT report, Ranjan Verma secured 489 marks out of 500 in the Matric Examination results, which were announced on Saturday, March 29, 2025. His twin brother Ranjeet got 477 marks and became the seventh topper from Bhojpur district, the report added. As per another report, their cousin, Shubham Verma also appeared in the matric examination this year and achieved 93 per cent. Rising from humble beginnings, Ranjan Verma made his way to the top amid all hardships. He has proved that success is a guarantee with hard work and strong determination. Verma and his brothers pedalled their way to the coaching institute three kilometres away from their village in Pitro. They came back to their village and cycled again to their school, reportedly about 3-4 kilometres away.&nbsp;

The young boy has scored an impressive 100 out of 100 in Mathematics, 97 in Hindi, Science and Social Science, and 96 in Sanskrit. Speaking to the press, Ranjan said that he wants to be an IAS officer. His mother, Sheela Devi, said that she was elated about her son's exceptional performance and would support both of her sons in their dreams.

Anshu Kumari, daughter of a plumber, has scored 97.8 per cent in the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) Class X results. Speaking to reporters, she said that she wants to crack National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) and wants to become an oncologist. Her scores &ndash; 100 in Hindi, 98 each in science and mathematics, 97 in Sanskrit and 96 in social science &ndash; reflected her hard work.&nbsp;
Sakshi Kumari from Samastipur has also shared the top position with Ranjan and Anshu. She is the daughter of a carpenter.

42-year-old Bajinder Singh is the founder and the head of the Church of Glory and Wisdom, which has churches in Jalandhar and New Chandigarh.
A controversial self-styled Christian pastor, he is famously known as the 'Yeshu Yeshu prophet,' because of videos of his sermons which typically have 'Mera Yashu Yashu' playing in the background.

In 2018, a woman from Punjab's Zirakpur alleged that she had started visiting the pastor's church in October 2017 with her parents, and soon after, Bajinder Singh took her phone number and started sending her text messages.
From 2022, the pastor allegedly made her sit alone in a cabin in the church on Sundays, and he would hug her and touch her inappropriately. She also alleged that Singh threatened to get her and her family members killed if she lodged a complaint against him.

In his defence, Singh claimed that the girl was suffering from "evil spirit," and that she experienced fits and had come to him for prayers.

This is not the first time when Bajinder Singh has got embroiled in a controversy.
In 2022, he was accused of taking money from a family based in Delhi for treating their daughter who was &nbsp;ill, but could not be saved.
In 2023, the income tax department raided his premises.

"Operation Brahma- Since arriving at earthquake sites in Mandalay y'day, our teams are working to extend critical support in search for survivors and medical/HADR support. More aid is on the way. Our hearts and prayers are with the affected people of Myanmar," the embassy said in a post on X.
It had earlier said that more aid and support were on their way for those affected by the disaster.

Maharashtra Navanirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Sunday slammed attempts to incite communal tension over Aurangazeb&rsquo;s tomb and said history shouldn&rsquo;t be viewed from the prism of caste and religion.&nbsp;
He also asked people not to rely on WhatsApp forwards for historical information.
Addressing his annual Gudhi Padwa rally at Shivaji Park here, Thackeray said the Mughal ruler wanted to &ldquo;kill a thought called Shivaji&rdquo; but failed and died in Maharashtra.
Afzal Khan, the Bijapur general, was buried near the Pratapgadh Fort and it couldn&rsquo;t have been done without Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj&rsquo;s permission, he said.
Thackeray&rsquo;s comments came amid demands by right-wing outfits for the removal of Aurangzeb&rsquo;s tomb located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. Protests over the issue had also triggered violence in Nagpur earlier this month.
&ldquo;Don&rsquo;t we want to let the world know that these people sought to destroy the Marathas but were wiped out instead. Stop reading history on WhatsApp and rather delve into history books,&rdquo; he said.
Urging people not to get provoked and distracted, he said that socio-political situations were different in pre-Shivaji and post-Shivaji eras.
&ldquo;We have forgotten the real issues of the present time. Hindus who feel awakened after a movie are of no use. Did you learn about Sambhaji Maharaj&rsquo;s sacrifice because of Vicky Kaushal and about Aurangazeb because of Akshaye Khanna,&rdquo; he asked.
Thackeray was referring to the recently released period drama &lsquo;Chhaava&rsquo;, based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who was tortured and executed by Aurangzeb.
He said Aurangzeb was born in Dahod, Gujarat. Those who provoke people for their selfish political aspirations are not concerned with history, he asserted.
Thackeray said a country cannot progress on the basis of religion and cited the example of Turkey and how it &ldquo;reformed&rdquo; itself.
&ldquo;Religion should remain within the four walls of your home. A Hindu identifies as a Hindu only when Muslims take to the streets or during riots; otherwise, Hindus are divided by caste,&rdquo; he said.
The MNS chief claimed that the BJP-led government&rsquo;s popular &lsquo;Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin&rsquo; scheme would be scrapped. &ldquo;I told you earlier, but you believed them and not me,&rdquo; he said.
