This defence agreement is one of seven key pacts signed between PM Modi and President Dissanayake, aimed at bolstering bilateral cooperation.
The pact is being viewed as a significant move to bolster strategic ties, as it came nearly four decades after the Indian Peace Keeping Force's intervention in the island nation.
"We believe that our security interests are similar. The security of both countries is interlinked and dependent on each other," Modi said in his media statement.
"I am grateful to President Dissanayake for his sensitivity towards India's interests. We welcome the important agreements concluded in defence cooperation," he said.
PM Modi and President Dissanayake also virtually inaugurated the Sampur solar power project.
"The Sampur Solar Power Plant will help in Sri Lanka's energy security. All the people of Sri Lanka will benefit from the agreements signed for building a multi-product pipeline and developing Trincomalee as an energy hub," Modi said.
<h2>'Sri Lanka will not permit its territory to be used against India': Dissanayake</h2>
Dissanayake reaffirmed Sri Lanka's commitment to India's security and regional stability, stating, "I reaffirmed Sri Lanka's stand that it will not permit its territory to be used in any manner inimical to the security of India as well as towards regional stability."
He also sought PM Modi's support on a key maritime issue.&nbsp;

The members of a family in the Kovaya village of Amreli, Gujarat, woke up past Monday midnight on hearing some strange noises and were horror-struck on seeing that a lion had entered their home through the roof and was peeping in the kitchen. The family&rsquo;s dangerous encounter with the lion was captured on video that has since gone viral.
According to reports in local Gujarati media, the family of Mulubhai Rambhai Lakhannotra was asleep when the lion made its way in through an opening in the roof. The frightening view caused panic, but a quick response from nearby villagers prevented any casualties.&nbsp;
The startled residents shone torches at the animal and shot videos on their phones.

Saudi Arabia serves as a critical link in the IMEC&rsquo;s northern corridor, connecting the Arabian Gulf to Europe. The proposed rail network will traverse the kingdom, linking ports in the UAE like Fujairah to the Israeli port of Haifa via Saudi cities like Haradh and Riyadh.
India has been engaging with countries who were part of the signing document for the corridor in Delhi. During PM Modi's France visit in February this year, the inauguration of the consulate in Marseille was seen as key to the corridor, which is seen linking the city with India's financial capital Mumbai.
Meanwhile, Italy is hoping for Trieste, a northeastern port city to be the key point to the corridor. Italy nominated Ambassador Francesco Tal&ograve; as its IMEC representative just ahead of Italian foreign minister Antonio Tajani's India visit next week.

Interestingly, the visit came just a few months after India removed special status for the erstwhile state of Jammu &amp; Kashmir during which the Saudi response signaled a strong diplomatic support for India.
India is the 2nd largest trade partner of Saudi Arabia whereas Saudi Arabia is the 5th largest trading partner of India. The country remains India&rsquo;s third-largest Crude and Petroleum products sourcing destination for FY 2023-24.&nbsp;
In the same financial year, the country was also the 3rd largest LPG sourcing destination for India, accounting for 18.2% of the total LPG imports of India that year.
Defence has also emerged as an important pillar of ties. Both have extensive naval cooperation and so far, two editions of the bilateral naval exercise &lsquo;Al Mohed Al Hindi&rsquo; have been concluded. The first ever India-Saudi Joint Land Force Exercise &lsquo;EX-SADA TANSEEQ-I&rsquo; was conducted in India from January 29 - February 10, 2024.&nbsp;

PM Modi likely to travel to Saudi Arabia this month

Srinagar: With the arrival of the spring season in the Kashmir Valley, thousands of almond trees are in full bloom. The pink and white flowers on the almond trees are no less than a wonderland. The famous Almond Garden, &lsquo;Badamwari&rsquo; of Srinagar city, has thousands of almond trees, which are in full bloom and all set to welcome tourists as well as locals. The department of tourism organised a special almond blossom festival as well.
The gardens of the Valley are finally turning into colourful palettes with almond and cherry blossoms. Thousands of tourists are thronging the Kashmir Valley only to witness these beautiful visuals. These are the first flowers to bloom in a season, and Badamwari located at the foothills of Kohi-Maraan mountain on 300 kanals of land, has more than 1000 almond trees.
The Tourism Department says that not only has the domestic tourist arrival increased but the footfall of international tourists has also risen. According to government data, around 200-300 foreign tourists are visiting the valley every day. A special spring almond blossom festival was held at the Badamwari garden in Srinagar City.&nbsp;

&ldquo;This was one of the first festivals that we organised, and we are planning many such festivals. To welcome the season, we will organise festivals in Yusmarg and many other places. The hotels in Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam are fully occupied, and around 54 flights are coming, and all are packed. Most of these flights are full of tourists. We are also getting 200-300 foreign tourists daily as well, and we are getting a big group of women from New Zealand as well,&rdquo; said Raja Yaqoob Farooq, Director of Tourism, Kashmir.
A huge number of locals as well as the tourists are arriving at the Almond Garden. The social media sites are already filled with pictures of the Badamwari. The government is hoping that all the previous records of tourist arrivals would be broken this spring. The tourists already in the valley are enjoying the view of the bloom.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a very nice place, and it&rsquo;s very unique. We had seen it in the paper and media only. After coming here, it&rsquo;s very nice, and it&rsquo;s worth seeing. It&rsquo;s one of the best places, and one should see it for sure,&rdquo; said Ravi, a tourist.&nbsp;

&ldquo;I am so excited to be here, we don&rsquo;t see these flowers in Hyderabad, so I am loving it here. It&rsquo;s very beautiful and very exciting to see the tulips. We decided to come during the season only,&rdquo; said Jahnvi, a tourist.&nbsp;
The spring festivals also attract more and more tourists to the Kashmir Valley.

Srinagar: With the arrival of the spring season in the Kashmir Valley, thousands of almond trees are in full bloom. The pink and white flowers on the almond trees are no less than a wonderland. The famous Almond Garden, ‘Badamwari’ of Srinagar city, has thousands of almond trees, which are in full bloom and all set to welcome tourists as well as locals. The department of tourism organised a special almond blossom festival as well. The gardens of the Valley are finally turning into colourful palettes with almond and cherry blossoms. Thousands of tourists are thronging the Kashmir Valley only to witness these beautiful visuals. These are the first flowers to bloom in a season, and Badamwari located at the foothills of Kohi-Maraan mountain on 300 kanals of land, has more than 1000 almond trees. The Tourism Department says that not only has the domestic tourist arrival increased but the footfall of international tourists has also risen. According to government data, around 200-300 foreign tourists are visiting the valley every day. A special spring almond blossom festival was held at the Badamwari garden in Srinagar City. Who is he? “This was one of the first festivals that we organised, and we are planning many such festivals. To welcome the season, we will organise festivals in Yusmarg and many other places. The hotels in Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam are fully occupied, and around 54 flights are coming, and all are packed. Most of these flights are full of tourists. We are also getting 200-300 foreign tourists daily as well, and we are getting a big group of women from New Zealand as well,” said Raja Yaqoob Farooq, Director of Tourism, Kashmir. A huge number of locals as well as the tourists are arriving at the Almond Garden. The social media sites are already filled with pictures of the Badamwari. The government is hoping that all the previous records of tourist arrivals would be broken this spring. The tourists already in the valley are enjoying the view of the bloom. “It’s a very nice place, and it’s very unique. We had seen it in the paper and media only. After coming here, it’s very nice, and it’s worth seeing. It’s one of the best places, and one should see it for sure,” said Ravi, a tourist. Congress MP Sonia Gandhi called it a &ldquo;brazen assault&rdquo; on the Constitution and accused the BJP of seeking to keep society in a state of &ldquo;permanent polarisation&rdquo;.&nbsp; She also said that the bill had been &lsquo;bulldozed&rsquo; through the Rajya Sabha, leading to a call of an apology from her by the BJP.
Reacting in a press conference on Friday, Rijiju said that the Rajya Sabha debated the Waqf Bill for a record 17 hours and two minutes, while in Lok Sabha, the debate ran for over 12 hours.
<h2>Owaisi targets Naidu, Nitish</h2>
AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi said that the Wakf (Amendment) Bill is an assault on Muslims who will never forgive BJP allies TDP&rsquo;s N Chandrababu Naidu and JD-U&rsquo;s Nitish Kumar for allowing the Narendra Modi government to attack shariat.
The Bill would not have been tabled if the BJP allies had opposed it, he said.

In his letter, he alleged that a politically motivated FIR had been filed against him by local Congress leaders over a derogatory post on a WhatsApp group of which he was the admin. He accused Congress leader Tenneera Maheena of circulating the details of the case, including his photo, to defame him. He revealed that he was arrested but even after securing bail, he was allegedly harassed by the Madikeri Town Police at the behest of AS Ponnanna, Congress MLA and legal advisor to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

BJP worker dies by suicide in Bengaluru, blames Congress leaders in death note

The Supreme Court of India on Friday (April 4) rejected the plea of the jailed Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief, Yasin Malik, a former terrorist-turned-separatist leader, for a physical hearing in a Jammu court but allowed him to virtually cross-examine witnesses in terror cases related to kidnapping and murder.
The trials against him are the 1989 kidnapping of Rubaiya Sayeed, daughter of former Union Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, and the 1990 shootout, in which four Indian Air Force personnel were killed in Srinagar during the height of militancy in Kashmir.
The CBI had opposed Malik&rsquo;s physical production, arguing that he poses a national security threat and should not be allowed outside Tihar Jail.&nbsp;
Appearing before the SC bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan through video-conferencing from Delhi&rsquo;s Tihar Jail, Malik said that he was &ldquo;not a terrorist and only a political leader&rdquo; and claimed that &ldquo;seven prime ministers had engaged in dialogue with him&rdquo; in the past.
Malik is lodged in Tihar jail after he was sentenced by a special NIA court in May 2023 in a terror-funding case.
<h2>&lsquo;I am not a terrorist; seven PMs engaged with me&rsquo;</h2>
&ldquo;It is pertinent to note that post a unilateral ceasefire in 1994, I was provided bail in 32 cases and none of the cases were pursued,&rdquo; Malik said. &ldquo;CBI&rsquo;s objection is that I am a security threat. I am responding to that. I am not a terrorist and only a political leader. Seven PMs have engaged with me,&rdquo; he said. In the ongoing trials, witnesses have identified Malik as the main shooter in the Rawalpora, Srinagar shootout, and he is the prime accused in the case.
<h2>&rsquo;I gave up arms, I&rsquo;m a Gandhian now&rsquo;</h2>
Earlier, in an affidavit filed in the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) tribunal, Malik said, &ldquo;I gave up arms, I&rsquo;m a Gandhian now.&rdquo; He added that he gave up armed struggle in 1994 and has embraced non-violence. The tribunal was reviewing the ban on JKLF-Y, which spearheaded armed militancy in the Kashmir Valley in the 1990s.
Malik had reportedly crossed over to the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir to receive terror training. The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) had the backing of Pakistan&rsquo;s secret service, ISI, for launching insurgency in Kashmir.
Malik and his aides had returned with arms after training and waged a war against the Indian security forces, with targeted attacks on government and security officials, besides kidnapping the Home Minister&rsquo;s daughter, Rubiya Sayeed. Malik&rsquo;s JKLF lost favour with Pakistan after the formation of the Hizbul Mujahideen in Kashmir.

In August 1990, Malik was captured and imprisoned until May 1994. After release on bail in May 1994, Malik declared an indefinite ceasefire of the JKLF. Malik renounced violence and expressed a desire for a democratic approach and a non-violent struggle for independence. He offered political negotiations but insisted that they must be tripartite with both Indian and Pakistani governments, a condition unacceptable to India. Swati Herkal, Environmental Socialist and member of the Rotary Club of Wai, Maharashtra, says that due to the rising temperatures, prices of many daily use items, including food, would likely go up.
Herkal said that the hotter weather can severely affect crops, especially the food crops india consumes daily. What's more, it can lead to a water shortage, which ultimately affects the soil and subsequently the food crops.

"Too much heat can spoil crops like wheat, pulses, and vegetables, especially if heat comes early in the season," she said, adding "Hot weather causes water to evaporate faster, putting more pressure on irrigation".
"Warm weather helps pests and crop diseases grow faster, which can hurt harvests."

Not only your "daal roti" it can also affect your chai-coffee (tea-coffee).
Hotter summers can lead to problems like heat stroke for cattle, warns Herkal.
"Cattle and other animals produce less milk and can fall sick in extreme heat," she noted.

Any one thing cannot be blamed for the heat. Climate change is one of the main culprits, but another major cause, especially for those of us living in metropolitan cities like Delhi, is 'Urbanisation,' said the expert.

On top of that outs sky scrapers and crowded areas "block wind, so hot air stays trapped". Along with this our "cars, air conditioners, and other machines release heat, making cities even hotter," she notes.
"Cement and plastic on the ground make it hard to grow plants, reducing natural cooling."

Modi, during the meeting, also flagged India&rsquo;s concerns about the safety and security of minorities in Bangladesh, especially the Hindu community, and urged Yunus to take action to protect minority rights and probe recent incidents of violence, Misri said.
&ldquo;PM Modi reiterated India's support for democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. He underlined Prof. Yunus India's desire to forge a positive and constructive relationship with Bangladesh. The PM also urged that any rhetoric that vitiates the environment is best avoided,&rdquo; foreign secretary Vikram Misri said.
&ldquo;On the border, strict enforcement of the law and prevention of illegal border crossing are necessary to maintain border security. The PM also underlines India's concerns over the safety and security of minorities, including Hindus in Bangladesh,&rdquo; he added.
The meeting was attended by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, alongside Modi and Yunus.

On the Bangladeshi side, officials said Yunus raised some key issues, including the Teesta river-water sharing agreement, the renewal of the Ganga treaty, and border killings. Discussions around Sheikh Hasina&rsquo;s extradition and her recent comments while in India were also reportedly brought up.
Dhaka described the meeting as &ldquo;constructive, productive, and fruitful&rdquo;, with both sides airing their priorities amid strained ties.
<h2>Diplomatic tensions simmer over China comments</h2>
The talks came just a day after Jaishankar delivered a subtle but firm response to Yunus&rsquo;s recent comments in China, where he described Northeast India as &ldquo;landlocked&rdquo; and Bangladesh as the &ldquo;only guardian of the ocean&rdquo; for the region.
Speaking at the 20th BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting, Jaishankar said, &ldquo;Our Northeast region in particular is emerging as a connectivity hub for the BIMSTEC, with a myriad network of roads, railways, waterways, grids, and pipelines.&rdquo;
He added that India&rsquo;s Northeast, through initiatives like the Trilateral Highway, would be connected &ldquo;all the way to the Pacific Ocean&rdquo;, calling it a &ldquo;game-changer.&rdquo;

Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh informed Lok Sabha about steps taken by India to support its citizens facing deportation or other legal consequences due to their undocumented status in the US.
A total of 682 Indian nationals have been deported from the US since January 2025 till date, the minister said in a written response to a question.
"The vast majority of these deportees had attempted to enter the U.S. Illegally, but were apprehended at the US border itself and thereafter deported to India after due verification. As such, these deportations may not have any impact on the overall remittance flows to India," he said.

"The Government of India continues to work in close coordination with the US government on all instances of deportation of individuals who were found to have illegally entered the US, or have overstayed their visa validity, or have been found living in the US without any documentation or have criminal convictions against them.
"The list of persons identified for deportation by the US side is closely scrutinized and verified by the concerned agencies of the Government of India. Only those persons who have been verified to be Indian nationals are accepted to be deported to India," he said.

An 18-year-old girl, Preeti Kushwaha, from Delhi died by suicide on Sunday (March 23) after her "husband" and also the cousin tried distancing himself from her.&nbsp;

Her mother told police that in the evening on the day of her suicide, she received a text message from Preeti in which she said she had made &nbsp;chapatis for her and that she must eat them once back home. &nbsp;When the mother arrived home, she found Preeti hanging from a fan.&nbsp;

'Romantic evening' for some, chaos for others: Bengaluru residents share summer rain joy and pain

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi will arrive in the island nation of Sri Lanka on Friday (April 4) evening, for a two-day state visit. Modi will be the first global leader hosted by Anura Kumara Dissanayake after being sworn-in as the president of the country in September.
Both the nations will hold discussions on sectors such as energy, digitalisation, security, healthcare, and debt assistance given to Sri Lanka by India, said the statement released by Sri Lankan president's office.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi will arrive in the island nation of Sri Lanka on Friday (April 4) evening, for a two-day state visit. Modi will be the first global leader hosted by Anura Kumara Dissanayake after being sworn-in as the president of the country in September. Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty slumped in initial trade on Friday due to heavy selling in metal, oil &amp; gas shares as President Donald Trump's sweeping tariff salvo reignited the fears of global trade war. The broader NSE Nifty declined 202.55 points or 0.87 per cent to 23,047.55. From the Sensex pack, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Larsen &amp; Toubro, Reliance Industries, Maruti Suzuki India, IndusInd Bank, Infosys, HCL Technologies, NTPC, Tech Mahindra, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, and Adani Ports were among the laggards. In contrast, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance, Bharti Airtel, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank, Nestle India and Hindustan Unilever were the gainers. "Markets are going through heightened uncertainty, which is likely to last some time. A trade war has been triggered by Trump and retaliatory tariffs from China, EU and others are on the cards. "This will only extend the period of uncertainty and confusion in the market," V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, said. Vijayakumar further, said "It appears that contraction in global trade and decline in global growth are inevitable in the present context. Decline in global growth will impact India's growth, too, even though we might do better than other large economies". Investors can wait for the dust to settle down. For the short-term, it would be better to focus on domestic consumption-driven themes and pharma in the externally-linked segments, he added. Trump on Wednesday announced a 27 per cent "discounted reciprocal tariff" on India, half of the 52 per cent levies imposed by India on American goods, as he described India as "very, very tough". The bruising sell-off across markets came after President Trump on Wednesday announced Washington's steepest trade barriers in more than 100 years, sending investors scrambling for safety assets, Vakil said. Investors will be awaiting US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech on Friday regarding his latest assessment of the US economy and any clues on the policy outlook following Trump's fresh tariff salvo, he added. Global oil benchmark Brent Crude slipped 0.70 per cent to USD 69.65 a barrel. Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty slumped in initial trade on Friday due to heavy selling in metal, oil & gas shares as President Donald Trump's sweeping tariff salvo reignited the fears of global trade war. Besides, foreign fund outflows have also dented the investor sentiment. The 30-share BSE Sensex slumped 591.05 points or 0.77 per cent to 75,704.31 in the morning trade. The broader NSE Nifty declined 202.55 points or 0.87 per cent to 23,047.55. From the Sensex pack, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Larsen & Toubro, Reliance Industries, Maruti Suzuki India, IndusInd Bank, Infosys, HCL Technologies, NTPC, Tech Mahindra, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, and Adani Ports were among the laggards. In contrast, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance, Bharti Airtel, Mahindra & Mahindra, Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank, Nestle India and Hindustan Unilever were the gainers. "Markets are going through heightened uncertainty, which is likely to last some time. A trade war has been triggered by Trump and retaliatory tariffs from China, EU and others are on the cards. "This will only extend the period of uncertainty and confusion in the market," V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, said. Vijayakumar further, said "It appears that contraction in global trade and decline in global growth are inevitable in the present context. Decline in global growth will impact India's growth, too, even though we might do better than other large economies". Investors can wait for the dust to settle down. For the short-term, it would be better to focus on domestic consumption-driven themes and pharma in the externally-linked segments, he added. Trump on Wednesday announced a 27 per cent "discounted reciprocal tariff" on India, half of the 52 per cent levies imposed by India on American goods, as he described India as "very, very tough". On India, the chart showed that the country charged 52 per cent tariffs to the US "including currency manipulation and trade barriers,” and America will now charge India “discounted reciprocal tariffs” of 27 per cent. In Asian markets, Tokyo's Nikkei was trading more than 3 per cent lower, and Seoul's KOSPI went down by nearly 2 per cent. Shanghai and Hong Kong stock markets remained closed on the occasion of Qingming festival. US markets ended lower in overnight deals on Thursday and experienced their biggest drop since 2020. According to HDFC Securities' Head of Prime Research Devarsh Vakil, Wall Street benchmarks slumped on Thursday, ending with the largest one-day percentage losses in years, as US President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs ignited fears of an all-out trade war and a global economic recession. The bruising sell-off across markets came after President Trump on Wednesday announced Washington's steepest trade barriers in more than 100 years, sending investors scrambling for safety assets, Vakil said. Investors will be awaiting US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech on Friday regarding his latest assessment of the US economy and any clues on the policy outlook following Trump's fresh tariff salvo, he added. Global oil benchmark Brent Crude slipped 0.70 per cent to USD 69.65 a barrel. Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 2,806 crore on Thursday, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) purchased shares worth Rs 221.47 crore on a net basis.
