Scotland Yard described the probe as “significant” following which Navroop Singh was jailed with a minimum term of 14 years behind bars by Isleworth Crown Court on Friday (Jul 4). He has been charged with five counts, including rape, the Metropolitan Police said.&nbsp;Singh earlier pleaded guilty to three offences including possession of an imitation firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence, rape of a girl under 13 and assault of a girl under 13 by penetration. In addition, he was convicted of attempted rape of a woman in West London in October 2024.&nbsp;“I would like to commend the strength of the victim-survivors and their families and thank them for their unwavering bravery in reporting these awful incidents to us,” said acting Chief Superintendent Sean Lynch of the Metropolitan Police. “Today’s conviction is a testament to the officers’ thorough investigation, which has identified a violent sexual offender and undoubtedly prevented further harm.”&nbsp;Singh was tracked down using forensics, CCTV, and witness accounts to build a file of evidence against him. Lynch added, “We are continuing to prioritise tackling violence against women and girls with our increased specialist teams. I hope that the community will find reassurance in our action to put this predator behind bars.”&nbsp;Last year in October, an investigation was launched after reports of an attempted rape of a woman in her 20s, who alerted the police. The talks are important, as the suspension of US reciprocal tariffs is ending on July 9, and hence both sides are looking at finalising the deal before that. Goyal stressed that India’s approach to international trade negotiations remains firm and ‘principled’.India seeks greater market access for its labour-intensive goods, while the US wants duty concessions for its agricultural products.&nbsp;<h2>‘National interest will always be supreme’</h2>&nbsp;“It should be a win-win agreement, and only when India’s interests are safeguarded—national interest will always be supreme—and keeping that in mind, if a good deal is formed, India is always ready to engage with developed countries,” Goyal said on the sidelines of the 16th Toy Biz B2B expo in Delhi.“Discussions are ongoing with various countries, be it the European Union, New Zealand, Oman, the US, Chile, or Peru. Talks about agreements are underway with many nations,” he said.&nbsp;“A free-trade agreement is only possible when there is mutual benefit. A deal is accepted only when it is fully matured, well-negotiated, and in the national interest,” the commerce minister added.&nbsp;<h2>India proposes retaliatory duties against US over auto tariffs</h2>&nbsp;India on Friday proposed imposing retaliatory duties under the World Trade Organisation (WTO) norms against the US over American tariffs on imports of auto parts from the country in the name of safeguard measures.“The proposed suspension of concessions or other obligations would take the form of an increase in tariffs on selected products originating in the United States,” according to a notification of the WTO being circulated at India’s request.India has notified the WTO’s Council for Trade in Goods of its proposed suspension of concessions and other obligations under certain WTO provisions.&nbsp;“This notification is made in connection with safeguard measures extended by the United States of America on imports of automobile parts from India,” it said.&nbsp;On March 26, the US adopted a safeguard measure in the form of a tariff increase of 25 per cent ad valorem on imports of passenger vehicles and light trucks, and on certain automobile parts from India.&nbsp;India has maintained that the measures taken by the United States are not consistent with the GATT (General Agreement on Trade and Tariff) 1994 and the agreement on Safeguards.As consultations sought by India on these tariffs have not taken place, "India reserves the right to suspend concessions or other obligations", the WTO notification added.The development is important, as India and the US are actively negotiating an interim trade agreement to boost trade ties.

The upcoming visit of the Chinese FM, which is underway, comes even as both India and China aim to normalise ties after the Kazan meeting between PM Modi, and Chinese President Xi Jinping. As part of the normalisation of ties, focus is on the resumption of the people-to-people ties including the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Both sides are also looking at cooperation on the sharing of river water data, resumption of direct air services, and exchanges between media and think-tanks.Ties between the 2 Asian neighbours were on a free fall since the Galwan clashes of 2020. India's increased worry has been China's support to Pakistan, a country that has been supporting cross-border terrorism against India and is seen as a destabilizing factor in the region as well. When I asked the doctor, he didn’t give a satisfactory answer.”&nbsp;<h2>Appeals to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma</h2>&nbsp;Rahman has appealed to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to intervene promptly and ensure accountability in the alleged unauthorised removal of his genitals.“Now, I am helpless and don’t know what to do. My life is finished. I tried to contact the doctor several times, but he didn’t respond to my calls. I am in mental distress and have a problem due to the surgery,” he added.
