<h2>Transition to electric and alternative fuels&nbsp;</h2>Gadkari also underscored the remarkable progress India has made in adopting electric vehicles (EVs) and other green technologies. He recalled how, just a few years ago, people questioned the practicality of EVs, especially when it came to roadside assistance and infrastructure. However, today, electric vehicles are seeing rapid growth, with an annual growth rate of 30-40%. “When we first began the push for electric vehicles, the cost of lithium-ion batteries was $150 per kilowatt-hour. Today, it’s down to $55-$60 per kilowatt-hour,” Gadkari said, indicating the remarkable strides in&nbsp;reducing costs and improving accessibility. &nbsp;He also highlighted India’s successful trials of electric buses, trucks, and even agricultural equipment like electric tractors. “In my own farm, we have installed solar power, which makes the cost of operating an electric tractor virtually zero,” he shared. Gadkari stressed that with continued technological advancements, the country is poised to make the leap into a new era of green energy, moving away from fossil fuels and toward more sustainable alternatives.<h2>Biofuels and agriculture: A green revolution</h2>The minister also focused on the importance of integrating biofuels into India’s energy mix. He emphasised that the agricultural sector, which contributes to 12% of India’s GDP, must play a significant role in the country’s energy transition. “Our agricultural sector is facing challenges, but we are diversifying agriculture towards the energy and power sectors. By converting surplus agricultural produce like sugarcane, corn, rice, and even bamboo into ethanol, we can reduce dependency on traditional fossil fuels,” Gadkari explained. &nbsp;He highlighted several successful initiatives, such as the use of ethanol from broken rice and corn, which has significantly increased the income of farmers in regions like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Additionally, biofuels are playing a pivotal role in addressing India’s pollution problem. “We are also making bioethanol from rice straw, which has been a major source of air pollution due to the burning of stubble. In Panipat, we’ve launched a plant that converts rice straw into ethanol and bio-bitumen, creating sustainable fuel alternatives,” Gadkari added.<h2>The road ahead: Sustainable development and infrastructure</h2>Gadkari also highlighted how infrastructure development, particularly in roadways, plays a key role in sustainability. “The transport sector contributes to 40% of air pollution, and I am very much responsible for this. But we are now building highways that are faster, more efficient, and less polluting,” he said. He pointed out the progress made in developing express highways that will significantly reduce travel time and fuel consumption. For example, the Delhi-Dehradun highway now takes just two hours, compared to the previous four-hour journey. &nbsp;Gadkari also noted the country’s success in reducing logistics costs. “We’ve already reduced our logistics cost by 6%. Our target is to match China’s logistics cost by the end of this year, and in the coming years, we aim to bring it in line with global standards,” he revealed. He emphasised that the development of high-speed, well-maintained roads is essential for reducing fuel consumption and supporting the adoption of electric and alternative fuel vehicles. &nbsp;Gadkari stressed that India’s rapid development must not come at the cost of environmental degradation. “Our mission for sustainable development must go hand in hand with protecting our ecology and environment. We are already using municipal waste in road construction and making bio-bitumen from agricultural residues. We’ve transplanted over 88,000 trees and planted over 4.5 crore trees to help protect the environment,” Gadkari said. &nbsp;He also reflected on the need to protect water resources and reduce the impact of floods, especially in areas like Vidarbha, where water conservation efforts have seen significant success. “Water conservation is a major part of our green revolution. We’ve already made 10,000 Amrush Sarovars, and we are focusing on increasing the water table and protecting our communities from floods,” he noted. &nbsp;In his closing remarks, Gadkari called on all stakeholders, government, industry, and citizens, to unite in the effort to create a greener, more sustainable India. “We must work together to protect our environment and ensure that we leave behind a better, cleaner world for future generations. When questioned about the attempt to manage the problem we created, she responded that humans search for problems that don’t truly exist and the materials are not designed to be accessible or profitable, so businesses don’t feel responsible for solving them.&nbsp;“We’re facing a waste crisis, and many organisations are trying to fix it. But the real issue is the lack of accessibility and connection within the system. We search for problems that don’t truly exist—the materials are not designed to be accessible or profitable, so businesses don’t feel responsible. They simply don’t see waste management as affecting their bottom line," Olsson added.<h3>India's strong laws on waste and e-waste</h3>When asked about India's strong laws on waste and e-waste, but still gaps remain, Dr Suneel Pandey, the director of Circular Economy &amp; Waste Management Division at the think tank TERI, reacted that the rules exist, and if they were fully enforced, the problem would be far smaller.&nbsp;“There may be multiple reasons, starting with proper monitoring and compliance. The rules exist, and if they were fully enforced, the problem would be far smaller. A major weakness lies in regulatory capacity, monitoring compliance and training officials to implement the rules effectively," says Dr Suneel Pandey, the director of Circular Economy &amp; Waste Management Division at the think tank TERI.&nbsp;Answering the question about the behavioural, controlled or failure of enforcement, Ripudaman Singh Bevli, the National Sustainability Changemaker, said, "I think it's all of those. We have seen this generational. User behaviour is extremely important."&nbsp;When WION asked that behaviour changes be treated as a second option in terms of waste management, should it actually be a priority? Olsson responded that rather than individual level, everything must be looked at the systematic level.&nbsp;"Behaviour changes are not individual, but actually it's a cultural. Everything we need to look at the systematic level rather than only the individual level. The model, which is known as COM (Capability, opportunity and motivation), and ideas is that unless humans, communities and countries have all the Capability, opportunity and motivation for behaviour changes. It's not necessarily waste that is the problem, but solutions are out there. The communities need to be aware. People do care about the problem, but we don't make it easier opportunities for them. And accountability in this process is also more important," she added.

Amid an ongoing row over the Sachar Saathi mobile app, the Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia clarified on Tuesday (02 Dec) that users would have the option to activate the app only if they chose to, and would also be allowed to delete it. The opposition mounted a massive attack on the Government, alleging that the cybersecurity app is a tool for snooping on political opponents and citizens of the country.&nbsp;“This app does not enable snooping or call monitoring. You can activate or deactivate it as per your wish… If you don’t want Sanchar Saathi, you can delete it. It is optional… It is about customer protection. I want to clear all misconceptions… It is our duty to introduce this app to everyone. Keeping it on their devices or not is up to the user… It can be deleted from the mobile phone just like any other app…” Scindia said.&nbsp;Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi labelled the app as a tool for "Snooping" on citizens' mobile phones, and called this is step towards turning India into a dictatorship. We can't inhale without wearing masks. Someone or the other is sick in each household. Everyone is suffering from breathing ailments. Ramveer Tanwar, widely known as The Pondman of India, highlighted a critical gap in the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework, noting that those working at the grassroots level receive no economic benefit, making the policy ineffective on the ground. EPR is a system that holds producers accountable for the environmental impact of their products throughout their entire lifecycle, including post-consumer waste. He said that “Those who do not know the term sustainable are more sustainable and there carbon footprints are lesser than the one who knows what sustainability means.”&nbsp;

Highlighting that the ban on single-use plastic is not implemented, Vimlendu Jha, environmentalist and Executive Director of Swechha India said, “I am not saying that we should be 100% plastic free, but we can be plastic responsible, and that is the real challenge.” He also pointed out that plastic problem is an “institutional crisis” and not an individual's "behavioural issue." “Idea of a great nation has to be understanding of what should be sustainable,” he said. “Alternative to plastic is no plastic because as I said, safest plastic are the ones that has not been manufactured.”

Tanwar also stressed the power of community action, saying, “We need to create lakhs of Pond Warriors who can take the initiative to clean our ponds. If you have collected 5 kg of plastic in a year, it’s equivalent to having cleaned one pond.” Sharing a sharper critique, Jha called out corporate responsibility, stating, “You can't choke my water body and try to become the richest corporation in the world,” and further questioning global accountability: “The richest man in the world is the biggest producer of plastic in the world. Is it okay if they flood our river bodies? Eighty percent of our water bodies are terrible?” Adding to the discussion, Chaturvedi underscored the core solution: “The real thing is to reduce plastics. All of the things we do—make our homes and offices plastic-free—these are just practices for the main thing.”<h2>Mission Sustainability: No Action, Not an Option</h2>The event brings together global leaders, experts, and innovators to accelerate action aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. WION returns with the third edition of Mission Sustainability and in the first session titled “Solving the Plastic Puzzle”, WION's Molly Gambhir talks about the massive plastic problem plaguing the Earth. Providing meaningful insights on the topic are Ramveer Tanwar, widely known as The Pondman of India, whose restoration work has revived dying water bodies across the country; Vimlendu Jha, environmentalist and Executive Director of Swechha India, who has spent decades pushing for policy accountability and youth-driven climate action; and Bharati Chaturvedi, Founder and Director of Chintan, whose work emphasizes waste justice and the role of informal workers in sustainable systems. Speaking directly about the problem, Bharati Chaturvedi stated that the only true solution for the crisis is to reduce plastic use, adding that recycling is merely a delaying tactic. “There is only one solution, that is to reduce the use of plastic. Recycling is a delaying tactic,” Chaturvedi said. Highlighting that citizens should protest against the use of plastics not only at home but also against the policymakers and celebrities.
