Wing Commander Namansh Syal, an Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot, lost his life after Tejas fighter jet crashed at the Dubai Air Show on Friday (Nov 21). The 34-year-old was performing a low-altitude aerobatic manoeuvre when the indigenous aircraft went down in the afternoon. The Indian Air Force confirmed the tragic incident which happened in the United Arab Emirates.
“An IAF Tejas aircraft met with an accident during an aerial display at Dubai Air Show, today. The pilot sustained fatal injuries in the accident. IAF deeply regrets the loss of life and stands firmly with the bereaved family in this time of grief. A court of inquiry is being constituted to ascertain the cause of the accident,” the IAF said in its statement on X.
Who was Wing Commander Namansh Syal?
Hailing from Nagrota Bagwan of Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh, Wing Commander Syal had an exceptional service record and was known for his discipline. He is survived by his wife, who is also a Wing Commander in the Indian Air Force, a seven-year-old daughter, and his parents.
Syal completed his schooling from Primary School Dalhousie, Army Public School, YoL Cantt Dharamshala and Sainik School, Sujanpur Tira, in Himachal Pradesh. He joined the defence forces in 2009 after clearing the NDA exam.
Ramesh Kumar, a relative of Syal, said, “Namansh’s parents are currently at the Sulur Air Force Station near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. His wife, who also serves in the IAF, is in Kolkata for a course. His father Jagannath Syal served in the Indian Army’s medical corps and later worked in the education department, before retiring as a principal.”

Wing Commander Syal’s death has shaken the nation, as the whole country mourns his loss. Expressing condolences to the family, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said that the incident was “extremely heartbreaking and heart-rending.”
“The nation has lost a brave, dutiful, and courageous pilot. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved family members,” he added. “I pay heartfelt tribute to the indomitable bravery, dedication to duty, and commitment to national service of brave son Naman Syal Ji.”
