Haradanahalli Devegowda Kumaraswamy (HD Kumaraswamy), former Chief Minister of Karnataka, was sworn in as a union minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's new cabinet on Sunday (June 9).

He is from the Janata Dal (Secular) party and hails from a prominent political family in Karnataka.

He is the son of former Prime Minister of India HD Deve Gowda and the brother of Karnataka MLA HD Revanna. His family has been influential in Karnataka politics for decades.

In the recently held 2024 Lok Sabha elections, former CM Kumaraswamy contested as a candidate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Kumaraswamy secured victory from Karnataka's Mandya Lok Sabha constituency with a staggering 851,881 votes. His triumph came with a huge margin of 284,620 votes.

HD Kumaraswamy entered politics following the footsteps of his father, HD Deve Gowda. He rose to prominence within the Janata Dal (Secular) party and emerged as a key figure in Karnataka politics.

Among the key positions held by him includes his stint as the 18th Chief Minister of Karnataka from February 2006 to October 2007.

His tenure was marked by a coalition government between the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka, known as the JD(S)-BJP coalition government.

He was also the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) and represented various constituencies in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, including Ramanagaram and Channapatna.

He has held leadership positions within the Janata Dal (Secular) party, including State President of Janata Dal (Secular), and has played a crucial role in shaping its policies and strategies.

Kumaraswamy and his party, JD(S), espouse a center-left political ideology with a focus on social justice and regional development.

HD Kumaraswamy is married to Anitha Kumaraswamy, who is also a prominent political figure in Karnataka. The couple has two children.

In the 2019 parliamentary elections, his son Nikhil Gowda ran for the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency against independent candidate Sumalatha, the wife of the late film actor Ambareesh.

Kumaraswamy campaigned extensively throughout the constituency. However, despite his efforts, his son faced defeat and lost by a margin of nearly130,000votes.
