Monsoon updates: Kerala to brace for more rainfall in the coming days after Wayanad landslides

Following the massive landslides in Kerala's Wanayad district triggered by heavy rainfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for July 31.

For July 31 and August 1, the weather department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated regions in the state. IMD has stated, "Strong Surface winds with speed reaching 30-40 gusting to 50 kmph likely to prevail occasionally over Kerala" on July 31.

Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargode districts have been issued an orange alert for severe weather conditions, while Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur and Palakkad districts remain in a yellow warning.

For August 1, IMD has issued an orange alert for the Kannur and Kasargode districts, while Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad have been issued a yellow alert.

Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargode districts will remain under yellow warning on August 2. The weather department has stated heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Kerala till August 3 with Kannur and Kasargode in yellow alert.

On Tuesday, IMD issued a red alert for the state due to heavy downpours. At least 143 people lost their lives in the hilly regions with dozens missing due to the landslides.

The authorities have also advised fishermen not to venture into the sea near the coast of Kerala till August 3 as high tidal activity is predicted.

In an advisory issued on July 30, authorities have urged residents to avoid being in any vulnerable structure and going to water-logged areas and riverfront. It has also been advised to take shelter amid thunderstorms.

The coastal areas have also been advised to be on the lookout for any flash floods that may occur in the region due to severe weather conditions in the state till July 31.
