Malegaon case: Supreme Court rejects Col Srikant Purohit's petition for SIT probe

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to entertain the petition filed by Lt Col Srikant Prasad Purohit seeking a SIT probe in the Malegaon Blast case.

The Apex Court also asked him to approach the trial court.

Earlier in the day the Bombay High Court had refused to put stay on the charges framed on him by the lower court. The court also added that the matter pertaining to the validity of sanction for prosecution against Lt Col Purohit under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act is to be decided by trial court.

The Bar and Bench report said that the apex court did not interfere in the case because it did not consider it appropriate.

The trial court in Mumbai had rejected his plea on August 30 where he had sought the deferring of the framing of charges against him until Bombay High Court decides his application.

Col Purohit has spent close to nine years in jail. He was given bail by the Supreme Court in August 2017.

Purohit is accused of being involved in the 2006 Malegaon blasts.

Purohit is accused of pilfering the explosive used in the blasts from the army.

He is also accused of being a member of the right-wing Hindu group Abhinav Bharat.
