The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday (Aug 26) released a list of 44 candidates for the three-phaseelection to the 90 assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir but withdrew it hours later.
According to reports, the now-deleted list was missing the names of key BJP leaders in the union territory, likeJ&K BJP president Ravinder Raina and former deputy chief ministers Nirmal Singh and Kavinder Gupta.
While some claim that the BJP only meant to release the names of the candidates under the first phase, other reports have claimed that the exclusion of party heavyweights attracted instant backlash - forcing the high command to withdraw the complete list.
The preliminary list had 36 candidates from the Jammu region, eight from Kashmir Valley, including two Kashmiri Pandits (Veer Saraf fromShangus, Anantnag East and Ashok Bhat fromHabbakadal).
