India: Veteran CPM leader Sitaram Yechury dies at 72 after prolonged illness

Veteran CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury breathed his last on Thursday (Sep 12) at the age of 72, news agency PTI reported.

The senior Indian politician was admitted to AIIMS New Delhi on August 19 for treatment for a pneumonia-like chest infection.

AIIMS later issued a statement informing that Yechury's family has "donated his bodyfor teaching and research purposes."

Yechury recently underwent cataract surgery also.

The veteran leader remained on CPM's top decision-making body, the Politburo, for over 30 years and a member of the upper house of the Indian Parliament, Rajya Sabha, from 2005 to 2017.

Political career

Yechury joined the CPI(M) party in 1975, starting his political career with the Students' Federation of India.

He was arrested during the emergency imposed by former Indian PM Indira Gandhi in 1975, as he played a key role in national politics. During that time, he was also pursuing his doctorate in Economics fromJNU.

In 1996, Yechury played a key role in drafting a Common Minimum Programme for the United Front government. His contribution was instrumental in the forging of the ruling coalition for the UPA government in 2004.

The Leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, described him as a “friend” in his post on X.

"Sitaram Yechury ji was a friend. A protector of the Idea of India with a deep understanding of our country. I will miss the long discussions we used to have. My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and followers in this hour of grief," he said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed her condolences. "Sad to know that Sri Sitaram Yechury has passed away. I knew the veteran parliamentarian that he was and his demise will be a loss for the national politics. I express my condolences to his family, friends and colleagues," she said in a post on X.
