Chennai, the capital of the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, on Thursday (Sep 12) faced a major blackout following a fire incident at the city’s Manali substation. The power outages hit areas from Chennai's Manali to the Mint area.
Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) in a statement said that efforts were underway to restore power supply as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, Chennai residents took to X to vent out their frustration. One user said that electricity has been cut off in various areas in Chennai.
TANGEDCO managing director Rajesh Lakhani was quoted as saying by Times of India that fire and rescue officials were trying their best to put out the flames.
The official clarified that the fire was not caused by overload, as the demand was not as high as it usually is during the summer.
