A shooting incident triggered panic in thedistrict court complex of the Indian Union Territory of Chandigarh on Saturday(Aug 3) afternoon. As per reports,Malwinder Singh, a suspended assistant inspector general (AIG) of Punjab Police, opened fire on his son-in-law at the mediation centre and killed him on the spot.
The victim wasidentified asHarprit Singh, an Indian Civil Account Services (ICAS) officer. The suspended cop fired three shots from point-blank range at his son-in-law, with one bullet piercing his chest.
The victim had some marital disputes running withMalwinder Singh's daughter, Amitoj Kaur. Police said this was the fourth mediation session between the two families.
At the time of the incident at 2 pm IST, both families were present inside the centre. During the session,Malwinder Singh walked towards the washroom and soughtHarprit's help in finding the way. But, seconds later, Malwinder opened fire on him.

He was rushed tothe Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) by some advocates and his family members but was pronounced dead by doctors.
Meanwhile,Malwinder was immediately detained by Chandigarh police and the weapon that he used to kill his son-in-law was also recovered.
“Divorce proceedings were going on between the two parties since 2023. Both sides have previous litigation against each other in Mohali district. The matter was referred to the mediation centre, where the proceedings were being carried out by the court-appointed mediator. Harprit Singh along with his parents was present, while Dr Amitoj, who is in Canada, was represented by father Malwinder Singh,” police said in a statement.
Malwinder Singh was suspended from service in November last year on charges related tofraud and extortion. He was posted onAIG rankin the human rights cell of Punjab Police.
