At least 10 people were killed after a truck rammed into a private sleeper bus on NH-48 in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district, causing the bus to catch fire. The bus was travelling from Bengaluru to Shivamogga. Rescue operations are ongoing and the death toll may rise.
In Karnataka's Chitradurga district, a truck crashed into a private sleeper bus, killing at least ten people as the passenger vehicle caught fire. The accident occurred on National Highway 48 (NH-48) while the bus was en route from Bengaluru to Shivamogga. The incident took place within the jurisdiction of the Hiriyur rural police station. As per reports, at least 10 people have died in the horrific accident, and the death toll may rise.

What happened?
According to an ANI report, the lorry, which was travelling from Hiriyur to Bengaluru, crossed the divider, colliding with the sleeper bus. The impact sparked a fire, which engulfed the bus.
How many people were on board the bus?
Reports suggest that the bus, a private vehicle, belonged to Seabird Coach and had 32 people, including the driver and the conductor, onboard at the time of the accident. Six passengers remain missing after the bus was engulfed in fire. Six are undergoing treatment. First responders and officials are conducting rescue operations while the burned bus is removed from the road.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a statement, said that he was deeply saddened by the “loss of lives due to a mishap” in Karnataka's Chitradurga. In a statement posted on behalf of the PM, the PMO said that an ex-gratia of INR 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. Meanwhile, those injured in the accident would be given Rs. 50,000.
